FAIRSTONE SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

 DEFEATS FOR YOUNG, ROSS FIRST-DAY

SURPRISES AT DOWNFIELD

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Summary by Ed Hodge, SGU Press Officer
Bradley Neil tonight played down his top seed status at the Fairstone Scottish amateur championship, despite easing into round two at Downfield.
The 18-year-old from Blairgowrie won the Amateur Championship title at Royal Portrush six weeks ago and savoured the experience of playing in the Open earlier this month as a result of his achievement.
Neil left Hoylake for a holiday in Portugal with his girlfriend, Rosie, and her family and feels his batteries are now recharged for what could be a long week in Angus.
The Blairgowrie player reached the second round with a comfortable 5 and 4 win over Ellis Hart of Dullatur, setting up a clash with Bathgate’s 16-year-old Joseph Bryce, selected for next week’s Boys Home Internationals at Western Gailes.

However, Neil is only playing in the Scottish Amateur for the second time. He was knocked out in round two on home turf last year, so admits there are various players vying for the silverware at the former Open qualifying venue.
“It’s a little weird to be top seed,” admitted Neil, among the players who savoured a glorious day of weather on the opening day of the championship. “I know I’m Amateur champion, but you look at the other guys and what they have won.
“Alexander Culverwell is the defending champion, Grant Forrest won it in 2012 and was the winner of the St Andrews Links Trophy this year. There are a lot of good players.
“It was a good start, you just try and get past the first round and get your week going. I’ve a tough draw, although anyone could say that.
" You have to beat the player on the day. I made a few schoolboy mistakes today, but the longer I go in the week hopefully the rust will brush off.”
Culverwell started his defence with a slender one-hole victory over West Lothian’s Myles Johnston, while fourth seed Jack McDonald saw off Sam MacNeil (Aboyne) 6 and 4.
Bearsden’s Ewen Ferguson, the first player to hold the British boys and Scottish boys matchplay and strokeplay titles at the same time, also progressed, defeating Rob Paterson of Kilspindie 2 and 1.
“I actually prefer stroke play, being on my own and making a score, but I don’t think I’ve lost in matchplay since the South Africa Test match in the spring,” said Ewen
“I won the Scottish boys and then was unbeaten in my singles ties at the European boys.
“I think I’ve got a tough draw this week, but if you are going to win you have to beat the best players.”
Downfield member Stewart Smith kept the home flag flying by securing his place in round two, but there was a surprise as Craigie Hill’s Daniel Young lost out to Ryan Campbell (Falkirk) at the 19th.
Late in the day there was an every bigger shock as fifth seed James Ross, who recently performed so well as an amateur in the EuroPro Tour event at his home club of Royal Burgess, lost to Allan Johnston of Bonnyton 3 and 2.
The 2005 Scottish amateur champion Glenn Campbell was the first player to progress early in the day, but Auchterarder’s Graham Lowson, winner of the championship at Downfield in 1991, fell at the first hurdle to Newmachar's John Duff by 2 and1.
There was better news for another Auchterarder player, Martin Rogalksi, as the reigning UK amateur long drive champion progressed against Glenbervie’s Mark Hislop on the 18th.
Monifieth’s Chris Hutcheon, nephew of local golfing hero Ian Hutcheon, did make it through with a 3 and 2 win over Musselburgh Old Course’s Nathan Free.
Meanwhile, Royal Aberdeen’s Nick Macandrew hopes he can regain his early season form to produce his best-ever performance at the Scottish Amateur.
Macandrew won the Battle Trophy on the SGU Men’s Order of Merit earlier in the season but has struggled to find his top form since. On day one in Dundee, Macandrew was in the third game out and raced to a 5 and 3 success over Graeme Tinlin of Hawick.
“I had a good start to the season, winning the Battle Trophy and finishing in the top-20 in Ireland, but I’ve not done so well since,” said Macandrew. “I’ve been in good positions, five shots ahead at the Cameron Corbett for example, but then not gone on to win.
“I’ve played in this event three times and never been past the fourth round so hopefully I can go on a run.
Another north-east player, Adam Dunton, was a comfortable winner, 7 and 6 over Jonathon Brown of Haggs Castle, but there was not such good news for Deeside’s Michael Lawrie, watched by his father Paul, who qualified at Downfied before winning the 1999 Open.
Young Lawrie exited 5 and 4 to Duncan Cairnie (Carnoustie Caledonia).
Meanwhile, Glencruitten’s Robert MacIntyre, the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters champion, was forced to withdraw from the event as he arranges a visa for going abroad.

SAM LOCKE WINS UNDER-16 TITLE, RUNNER-UP IN UNDER-18s

ROGER WINS PAUL LAWRIE NORTH

EAST DISTRICT BOYS' STROKE PLAY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Cruden Bay's Stephen Roger, beaten finalist in the recent Cruden Bay Challenge Cup men's open tournament, continued his fine form this season by winning the Paul Lawrie Foundation North-east District Under-18 boys' stroke-play golf championship at Inverurie Golf Club today (Monday).
Roger, only 16, had rounds of 68 and 71 for a total of one-over-par 139.
He had a shot to spare from runner-up Sam Locke (Banchory) who scored 68-72 for 140. Sam had the consolation of winning the Under-16 scratch title.
Roger, Cruden Bay junior champion in 2013 and playing in the final again this coming Saturday,  had seven birdies over the two rounds, the sub-par figures at the first, third and ninth in his outward half of 33 in the second round proving invaluable when he bogeyed the ll1th, 12th, 14th and 15th in an inward 38.
Locke got on terms with Roger in the closing stages but was left rueing a bogey at the 17th where he was short of the green, elected to putt and took three to get down.
"I putted well on very good greens and my wedge play was good as well," said Roger whose short game is reaping the dividends of regular lunchtime winter practice between morning and afternoon school lessons.
Calum Morrison (Inverurie)  and Calvin Duffton (Torphins) both finished on 143 with rounds of 70-73.
The first four automatically make up the field for the Paul Lawrie Foundation NE District boys match-play championship at the same venue tomorrow (Tuesday)
Roger will play Duffton at 8.45am and it will be Locke v Morrison at 8.51. The final will be played in the afternoon, teeing off at 1.33pm.
The NE District Under-14s stroke-play championship is also being played tomorrow with a very small field.
The Under-18s handicap championship today was won by Calum Sheal (Cruden Bay) with a net total of 130 off 12 of a handicap. He had net rounds of 69 and 61

HUGE SPIN-OFF FROM FUND-RAISING INITIATIVES

AAM SCOTTISH OPEN  RAISES £73,255

FOR ARCHIE FOUNDATION CHARITY

NEWS RELEASE FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
The ARCHIE Foundation, the Official Charity of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, will benefit to the tune of £73,255 following the huge success of this month's event, played at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club.
A variety of fund-raising initiatives across the sun-drenched week on the Balgownie links underlined the generosity of a number of benefactors and also the skills of the world’s leading golfers through the birdies and eagles made during the 2014 championship.
The ARCHIE Foundation, which operates out of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, coincided their tenth anniversary appeal ‘High10 for ARCHIE’ with the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and they were generously rewarded.
The funds will benefit not only the Foundation’s work at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital but also at its other bases of operation, the Children’s Ward in Inverness and the Children’s Ward in Elgin, as well as funding projects in community hospitals throughout the North East of Scotland and the Northern Isles.

WEB.COM TOUR REPORT

Zack Sucher wins Midwest Classic

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas -- Zack Sucher won the Midwest Classic on Sunday for his first Web.com Tour title, closing with a 1-over 72 in windy conditions for a three-stroke victory.
Sucher, the 27-year-old former Alabama-Birmingham player, finished at 19-under 265 at the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate and earned $108,000 to jump from 20th to fourth on the money list with $247,318. The top 25 after the final four regular-season events will earn 2014-15 PGA Tour cards.
"I played really well last week and didn't get it done the last two days," said Sucher, coming off a tie for fourth last week in the Boise Open after sharing the 36-hole lead.
"I'm headed to the PGA Tour and now I can finally stop worrying about it."
Jarrod Lyle tied for 11th at 11 under after a 69 in his first U.S. event since his second bout with leukemia. The 32-year-old Australian opened with rounds of 67, 69 and 68.
"Everything's good," Lyle said. "The body's held up well. I've done a lot of good things. I think the biggest positive is the fitness side of it, that in the heat I got around four days and got around comfortably.
"The golf game's been in good shape for a while, but we had to wait and see if it fared well in tournament golf. ... I'm ecstatic with the way the week has gone. Better than expected."
Traveling with wife Briony and 2-year-old daughter Lusi, he's also set to play Web.com Tour events Aug. 7-10 in Springfield, Missouri, and Aug. 14-17 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
When Lyle returns to the PGA Tour for the start of the season in October, he will have 20 events to earn $283,825 and reach the equivalent of No. 125 on the money list in 2012, the year he suffered a recurrence. He returned to play in November in the Australian Masters and played in the Victorian Open in February.
Sucher opened with rounds of 66, 63 and 64.
"I saw the forecast last night and the wind was going to be in the opposite direction than it had been all week," Sucher said.
"We saw that wind on Wednesday and it makes almost every hole play harder. I knew that it was going to be hard for somebody to shoot a really good score. It was going to be tough."
Former Kansas State player Aaron Watkins was second. He also finished with a 72.
Bill Lunde was third at 15 under after a 69.
+All the Brits in the starting field failed to make the cut - Jimmy Gunn, Greg Owen, David Skinns.
