RUNNING INTO FORM FOR THE SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

CRAIG ROSS SLASHES THREE SHOTS

OFF KIRKHILL COURSE RECORD

NEWS RELEASE

From Alan Brown
Kirkhill Golf Club Team Manager

Craig Ross has smashed the long standing Kirkhill Golf Club course record, shooting an eight-under-par 62, three shots below the old record
Craig has once again shown this year that he is a extremely talented and dedicated golfer, recently finishing fourth in the prestigious Brabazon Trophy (the English open amateur stroke-play championship), and is running into form ahead of the forthcoming Scottish amateur match-play championship at Downfield Golf Club, Dundee.

He won the a bronze medal as a semi-finalist in the championship last year and was a quarter-finalists in 2012 at Royal Dornoch.

+Craig achieved his 62 in a club medal which, incidentally, he did not win! He came second - narrowly beaten by his team manager. Putting his score into context, the best round in a recent pro-am at Kirkhill was a 67!

CRUDEN BAY FIREWORKS FROM LONG DISTANCE TRAVELLER

DUNCAN McNEILL COMES HOME IN 29

 TO LEAD WITH A FIVE-UNDER 65

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Duncan McNeill from the Powfoot Golf Club made the long haul up from the Solway Firth to Cruden Bay on the North-east coast a worthwhile journey when the 16-year-old, pictured, shot a brilliant round of five-under-par 65 to lead at the end of a round-the-clock first round of the Scottish Under-18 boys' open amateur stroke-play tournament at the classic Buchan links.
Wednesday's fog which cut the tournament from four to three rounds hung around and delayed the resumption of play today (Thursday) by an hour,  to 8.30am, and the last players in a huge field of 144 completed their rounds after 9pm as the fog started to come back in from the sea.
A total of 51 players with scores of four-over-par 74 or better qualified for Thursday's final two rounds.
McNeill's round did not promise much when he bogeyed the fourth and the fifth - but it all changed when he birdied the long sixth. That was followed by another birdie, at the eighth, to see him match the outward par of 36.Then Duncan produced an inward half he will remember when he is an old man. He came home in only 29 strokes - five under-par - with birdies at the short 11th, 12th, long 13th, 16th and 17th.
Sharing second place on 67 are Thomas Thurloway from West Sussex and Ryan Lumsden (Royal Wimbledon) plus two Scots: Ben Kinsley (St Andrews) and George Burns (Williamwood).
Kinsley got off to a flying start with birdies at the first, third and five - and then the sub-par figures dried up. He bogeyed his last 13 holes for halves of 33 and 34.
Defending champion Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten) is on the 70 mark alongside Scottish and British boys champion Ewen Ferguson (Bearsden) and Murray Naysmith (Marriott Dalmahoy).
It was a game of two halves for the left-handed teenager from Oban. He birdied the first, third and sixth in a bogey-free outward 33 but was three-over-par for the second nine with no birdies but bogeys at the 12th, 13th and 15th.
Ferguson came home in 33 with a scorecard which showed only four variations from par - bogeys at the first and third, birdies at the eighth and 11th.
Three Inverness players made it through on the 73 mark - the Franssen brothers, Rory and Cameron, plus Kieran Mackay.
Sandy Scott (Nairn), recent winner of the R P B Bain Trophy at North District boys champion, had a 71 (39-32). Sandy started moderately with a bogey at the second, a double bogey 6 at the third and a bogey at the sixth.
But somebody lit Sandy's fuse at the eighth which he birdied and then came storming home in 32 with birdie 2s at the 11th, 15th and 16th. Pity about the bogey at the 18th but well done, all the same, for Sandy.
Declan Addison was the local Cruden Bay hero. He plays off +1 at the club but was grateful to get it round in one over par 71 today to ensure another two rounds tomorrow. He birdied the second and 15th, cancelling them out with bogeys at the fourth, fifth and 16th.
Adam Fisher (Newmachar), recent winner of the Paul Lawrie Junior Jug, cruised through with a 72 but Paul's younger son, Deeside junior member Michael, missed the cut with a 78.
Sam Locke (Banchory) also failed to make it with an 80.
The South African with the famous name, Tom Watson, missed the cut with a 76. The other South African, Kyle McCletchey, who, at +4 of a handicap, should have been the backmarker in the field, withdrew before the start.
