GRAHAM RANKIN AND ANDREW OLDCORN RETIRE IB FIRST DAY

McBAIN (70) MAKES GOOD START AT

CARRICK ON LOCH LOMOND

Greg McBain, making a rare appearance on the EuroPro Tour in this week's Motocaddy Masters at Carrick on Loch Lomond, marked the occasion with a one-under-par round of 70 - two birdies, one bogey - to be joint fourth in the huge field at the end of the first day.
McBain is two behind the leader, Neil Chaudhuri (England).
Other Scots with reasons to be cheerful included Neil Fenwick (Dunbar) joint seventh with a 71 and John Henry (Clydebank and District) with a 72 for a share of 14th place.
Two Scots who will take no part in the tournament are former Walker Cup player and past Northern Open champion Graham Rankin (Drumpellier) and Andrew Oldcorn (Kings Acre), a past PGA champion.
Rankin retired from the event after posting an 18-over-par round of 89 in which he had only three par figures in halves of 45 and 44. He had three double bogeys and one tripe bogey.
Oldcorn retired after only three rounds - bogey, double bogey, par .. finish. He may have been injured, he may have been feeling unwell.

TWENTY-THREE OF THE WORLD'S TOP RANKED 60 IN THE FIELD

WORLD STARS GATHER AT ROYAL

ABERDEEN FOR THE BIGGEST GOLF

SHOW YET AT
BALGOWNIE LINKS

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS PREVIEW
Defending champion Phil Mickelson will head the strongest field in the history of the tournament at this week’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, which visits the spectacular Royal Aberdeen Golf Club for the first time.
Last year Mickelson achieved a brilliant double, following up his triumph at Castle Stuart with victory in The Open Championship a week later, and his success has inspired some of the finest players in the world to tackle Royal Aberdeen’s notoriously tough Balgownie links.
The illustrious line-up for the £3million event contains no fewer than 23 players from the top 60 of the Official World Golf Ranking, ten Major Champions, eight former European Tour Number Ones, 94 European Tour winners and eight former Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open champions
Paul Lawrie, a born and bred Aberdonian, will attempt to win the title for the first time, and it is also a homecoming of sorts for Russell Knox, who will make his first appearance as a professional in Scotland, having left his native Inverness for the USA as a teenager.

Key quotes:

Phil Mickelson
“Royal Aberdeen is a real asset to this tournament. It's a beautiful golf course. I really believe coming here and playing the week before The Open, playing in a great links test like this, is a real asset, an asset for players from overseas to get acclimatised to to these conditions.
“When you really appreciate and love it, like I've kind of learned to, it's exciting. It turns out to be some of our favourite weeks of the year.  Tomorrow is supposed to be terrible weather and I hope it is, because I would love to be able to get out in that stuff which I never get a chance to back home, and have actually started to play pretty well in over the years.”

Rory McIlroy
“It would be nice to contend here this week and go into The Open next week with a bit of momentum. I'm expecting a tough test. It looks like it's going to be a tough golf course. I had a really good week of practice and training last week and that sort of rejuvenated me.  I needed it.”

Justin Rose
“I played the Jacques Léglise Trophy here in 1996 or 97. If I'm not mistaken, I played Sergio Garcia in the singles match, which was cool. I believe I got an honourable half out of the match. It’s a great golf course and it has a great reputation. My Open form has not been fantastic the last number of years so I thought playing my way in, as did Phil last year, would be worth doing.”

Stephen Gallacher
“It's great just to be playing your national Open on links golf. It's golf we very rarely get a chance to play these days, so to play a course that's superbly set up, a little bit of wind here and there and a little bit of variability, it's going to be an exciting week, especially with the stellar field that's here.”]

Ian Poulter
“I'd like to do what Henrik (Stenson) did last year. He kick-started his season at the Scottish Open., finishing second, and went on finished second at The Open, and had an incredible end to the season. That’s in my mind, that it is possible, because he didn't get off to the best of starts, but then turned his season around with the most amazing back end of the year, won both titles (the FedEx Cup and The Race to Dubai).

Rickie Fowler
“I enjoy coming over here and kind of playing the golf courses and using my imagination to get around and hit different shots. This course is a bit narrow in spots and it may be a little tougher tomorrow if the weather comes in like expected.
“I've definitely enjoyed playing a lot of the old‑style courses. I grew up learning the game from an older gentleman who was definitely more old school. I didn't grow up learning how to exactly swing a golf club, it was more learning how to play the game, and I think that's why I appreciate links golf maybe more than a lot of guys in the younger generation from the US.”

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

FOOTNOTE: Royal Aberdeen is about 500 yards short of being on the Open championship roster, so they say. This weekend's action should prove that the Balgownie Links, with its narrow fairways, does rank with the best links in Scotland.
The Senior British Open has been played there ... the Walker Cup ...the Jacques Leglise Trophy boys' international ... the Scottish men's and women's amateur championships ... the Northern Open ... the British boys and the Scottish boys championships .... they have all been hosted by Royal Aberdeen Golf Club.
But this is the biggest yet.

TIGER PAID $76,012 FOR POST-KNEE SURGERY TREATMENT

REVELATIONS ABOUT TIGER WOODS

AND CANADIAN SPORTS DOCTOR

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
A new book about New York Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez's use of performance-enhancing drugs throughout his career includes revelations about another sports superstar: Tiger Woods.
Released Tuesday, Blood Sport: Alex Rodriguez,
Biogenesis and the Quest to End Baseball’s Steroid Era, co-authored by Tim Elfrink of the Miami New Times and Gus-Garcia Roberts of Newsday, claims that the Canadian sports doctor Anthony Galea, who treated Rodriguez, also visited Woods 14 times between January and August 2009 and charged Woods a total of $76,012 as he recovered from knee surgery following his 2008 U.S. Open victory. Previous reports had identified only four or five visits.
In 2011, Galea pled guilty to smuggling human growth hormone and other drugs into the United States to treat professional athletes.
Both Woods and Galea have said that Woods only received only legal platelet-rich plasma therapy from Galea.
The book also reports that according to the Florida Department of Health, Dr. Mark Lindsay, an associate of Galea's who also treated Rodriguez, visited Woods' 49 times from September 2008 to October 2009 and charged Woods' $118,979.
From late 2008 through 2009, when Woods was facing the worst injury of his career and Rodriguez was sidelined with a lingering hip problem, they sometimes talked abut the cutting-edge techniques of the two Canadian physicians treating both of them at the same time: Anthony Galea and Mark Lindsay.
Hank Haney, Woods' former swing coach, who has been one of Woods' most vocal critics since they stopped working together in 2010, told the Golf Channel that he never saw anything out of the ordinary in Galea's treatment of Woods.
"I was there and watched the whole procedure," Haney said. "There was never anything that went into Tiger Woods' body that didn't come out of his body. They take blood out, they spin it, they inject the plasma back in.
"I totally believe that Tiger Woods has never taken any performance-enhancing drugs."

BRANDT SNEDEKER JOINS BUTCH

HARMON STABLE
FROM THE GOLF CHANNEL WEBSITE
Butch Harmon is expanding his staff of US PGA Tour players, adding 2012 FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker to a group that already includes Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson and Jimmy Walker.
Snedeker – who has worked with Sea Island (Georgia) Resort-based Todd Anderson since joining the US PGA Tour in 2007 – met with Harmon the week before the U.S. Open where he tied for ninth, and flew out to Las Vegas on Tuesday to solidify his relationship with the legendary swing coach.
“I feel like I’ve been with one of the top two or three teachers in the world the last eight years and now I feel I am transitioning to one of the top teachers of all time,” Brandt Snedeker said.
“Now my main goal is to win major championships and over the past year my game has plateaued and I want to make sure I give myself the best chance to win a major going forward.”
Harmon said Snedeker called him about 10 days ago to ask if the two could work together permanently and after running it by the other members of his stable Harmon said it was an easy decision.
“You know me I don’t make overhauls, but he had gotten into some bad habits and I just showed him the way we could fix it,” Harmon said.
“The big work as far as the changes is there. We did some work today on his ball flight going into the British and he took to it very easily.”
Over the last year, Snedeker’s ball-striking had fallen off and he’d slipped to 125th on Tour in that category and his greens-in-regulation ranking had also fallen from 79th last year to 134th in 2014.
Before meeting with Harmon prior to the U.S. Open, Snedeker talked to Anderson, whose Tour clients include Billy Horschel, and the six-time Tour winner said it was a difficult decision to ultimately split with his long-time instructor.
“I have nothing but the utmost respect for Todd and his family. They have always been behind me and I am very grateful for everything he has done for me,” Snedeker said.
