ROYAL ABERDEEN PLAYER FAVOURITE TO WIN AT HAGGS CASTLE

NICK MACANDREW LEADS BY FIVE IN

CAMERON CORBETT VASE TOURNEY

Royal Aberdeen's Nick Macandrew has an outstanding chance of scoring a second win this season on the SGU 72-hole Order of Merit at Haggs Castle Golf Club on Sunday.
He leads the prestigious Cameron Corbett Vase tournament at the Glasgow venue by five shots at the halfway stage.
Macandrew, who beat Jamie Savage (Cawder) in a play-off for the Battle Trophy at Crail in April, set the first-round pace at Haggs with a seven-underppar round of 65.
That gave him a two-shot lead over John Duff (Newmachar) and Scott Grant (Downfield).
They both drifted out of contention in the second round in which Macandrew increased his lead with a 69 for a 10-under-par halfway tally of 134.
His nearest rivals now are fellow-Northeast player, Chris Robb (Meldrum House), winner of the East of Scotland Open 72-hole tournament at Lundin last weekend, Craig Chalmers (Cawder) and Craig Ross (Kirkhill).
Best known player among those who missed the cut at 149 was Dollar's Scott Borrowman who shot 74-80 for 154.

FOURTH WIN OF SEASON FOR CALDWELL TOUR PRO

CURRIE'S OUTWARD 30 SETS UP

VICTORY IN HAYSTON PRO-AM

Caldwell tour pro Christopher Currie chalked up his fourth of the season on the Tartan Tour with a five-under-par 65 in today's Hayston Charity pro-am at the Kirkintilloch club..

Currie, pictured left, a winner in pro-ams at Bathgate, Kirkhill and Cardross earlier in the year, laid the fouundation for his victory in a field of 44 professionals, with an excellent outward half of six-under-par 30. The only holes he did not birdie before the turn were the third and eighth.
The sparkle disappeared with bogeys at the 10th and 15th before Currie served it hot again with an eagle 3 at the long 16th, which gave him enough in hand to be able to bogey the 17th and still win the £1,260 first prize by one shot.
Joint runners-up on 66 were the Clydeway Golf pair of Paul O'Hara and Graham Fox, Edinburgh Golf Centre's Craig Gordon and Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre). They earned £696 each.
Fox led the Porcelain Plus 2 team of amateurs to victory in the pro-am event with a net total of 18-under-par 52. The amateurs were Alan Cross (handicap 6), Steven Brogan (9) and Robert Mearns (6).

AMERICAN LEADS ALSTOM OPEN BY FOUR STROKES

 STADLER FOUR CLEAR IN PARIS
By PAUL SYMES
Kevin Stadler edged ever closer to securing a wire-to-wire victory on his Alstom Open de France debut after opening up a four-shot lead on the third day in Paris.
Stadler carded a one over par round of 72 in testing conditions at Le Golf National to drop back to nine under par, but with his closest pursuers all faltering over the closing holes the American is still in pole position to claim his second European Tour title, having captured the Johnnie Walker Championship in 2006.
Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee defied the blustery showers to sign for a round of 69 which moved him to five under par alongside Victor Riu who, despite a round of 73, remains the host nation’s best hope of taking the €500,000 winner’s cheque.
Two-time Major Champion Martin Kaymer has an outside chance of winning the tournament for a second time after a round of 70 moved the German into fourth place on three under par.

Key quotes:

Kevin Stadler
“I got about what I deserved today. I didn’t play that great, but I made a few nice up and downs for pars. I didn’t have nearly as many looks for birdie as I had over the last couple days, but you can’t expect to play that well for four days in a row.
“So it was just about holding it together today, I knew I didn’t have to do anything crazy to stay ahead. A couple less shots would have been nice today, but overall I’m happy the way it went.”
Thongchai Jaidee

“My driving was not too good today, but I putted very well. I didn’t hit a lot of fairways today but it was tough because the wind was picking up, and the course is tough anyway.
“Maybe I have a small chance tomorrow, we’ll see. You never know what can happen on this course, because it’s very easy to make bogeys and even double bogeys out there.”
Victor Riu
“The back nine is much tougher than the front nine, and I didn’t play so well. So yeah, I’m a little bit frustrated.  I made a bad bogey on 15 with three putts, then 16 was an easy chip but I didn’t make a very good job of it, and on 17 I missed a very short putt for par. But it was important to finish well on 18, so I’m very happy to make a good par because it’s a difficult hole.”

ROSS DRUMMOND LYING SECOND IN GERMANY

Gibson gunning for Bad Ragaz title

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS REPORT
Rick Gibson will take a four-shot lead into Sunday’s final round at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open, as he attempts to complete a wire-to-wire victory at the picturesque Swiss Alps venue.
The 52 year old Canadian followed his scintillating opening round 63 with another impressive showing on Saturday; a four under par 66 maintaining his lead from second placed Ross Drummond.
Gibson calmed any lingering nerves following his first round exploits by chipping in at the first, before following that up with another birdie at the second.
“It’s been a while since I’ve shot 63,” said Gibson. “So it was always going to be difficult to follow it up with another good round, but I was able to do that.
“The greens are getting firmer so it’s getting a little trickier. They’ll be even firmer tomorrow so I just need to keep plugging along and setting myself up for some birdies.”
The last time he played at Bad Ragaz in 2012, Gibson carded three rounds in the 60s to finish in a tie for 11th and the venue is one he clearly feels comfortable on.
“I’m feeling good for tomorrow,” he continued, “although it’s been a long while since I led a tournament. I feel very comfortable here as it’s actually quite similar to playing in Canada.”
Although Drummond has been in contention plenty of times on the Senior Tour, the 57 year old Scot is also looking for his first win.
The Paisley man was left to rue three bogeys in his second round 68, but feels his game is in a good place.
“I’ve played nicely so far and I’m delighted, so I want more of the same tomorrow,” said Drummond. “I want to manage my game as well as I have done so far, and cut out the silly mistakes.”
One shot back from Drummond and five off the runaway leader Gibson is a group of four players, including 2011 Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open winner Peter Fowler.
Luis Carbonetti is another tied for third heading into the final round, thanks to a stunning, best-of-the-day 62.
The Argentine got off to a flying start, with a holed sand wedge at the tenth from 90 yards leaving him eight under just through the turn.
“I’m delighted with how I played,” said Carbonetti. “The first nine holes were very, very good. I thought I was on for an amazing round, however, at 61 years old I think I started to tire a bit and made two bogeys coming home.”
The omens could be with Carbonetti, whose  brother Horacio triumphed at Bad Ragaz in consecutive years back in 2003 and 2004.
Carbonetti, who is hoping a strong finish will help him qualify for the Senior Open Championship later this month, would love to continue the strong family tradition at Bad Ragaz on Sunday.
He said: “I’ve got so much experience round here and it’s beautiful. I know how the course and weather works round here, so we’ll see what happens.”

CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT AND SCORES

ANOTHER BAVARIAN LOW-SCORE DAY

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS REPORT
There is still nothing to separate the leaders at the Aegean Airlines Challenge Tour by Hartl Resort, with a trio of players holding a one-stroke advantage at 11 under par after 54 holes at Bad Griesbach, Germany.
Sweden’s Bjorn Åkesson, Englishman Chris Hanson and Jake Roos have led the way, and all are in position to challenge for the win on Sunday after another day of low scoring in Bavaria.
For Åkesson and Hanson tomorrow would be uncharted territory were they to win, while Roos has already tasted success this year.
The South African won the season opening event at the Barclays Kenya Open in March, and has put together a very steady run of performances en route to seventh place on the Rankings. He is clearly playing well, and talks openly about how good he is feeling about his game this week, so it would be no surprise if he were to take the title on Sunday.
“It was a good round today as I was hitting the ball very nicely,” said the 33 year old from Hermanus.

“There were one or two errors, but I’m pleased with the round. It was nice making those four birdies in a row after the turn, but then on the 14th the scorer came up to me and told me what I’d just done and I missed a two foot putt and made bogey. That was maybe a bit of a jinx there, but I’m playing well and hitting it quite tidy, keeping it in play, and that’s what you have to do round this golf course.
“I love being in the thick of it and am looking forward to tomorrow. It is pretty tight, so you have to put it in the right positions, but I like the greens and the course suits my game.
“I just want to stick to my game plan tomorrow and try and go as low as possible. It looks like it is going to be pretty competitive out there, so I’ll see what I can do.”
It has been a long week already for Hanson, who is riding a wave of confidence after he qualified for the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool later this month thanks to consecutive rounds of 69 at Hillside Golf Club on Tuesday.
That made for a long day of travelling on Wednesday, but he has revelled on the Beckenbauer Course since a solid opening round of one under par, with today’s 67 the latest stellar score posted by the man from Huddersfield.
“It’s just great to build on yesterday’s performance really,” said Hanson. “I feel like I have played very similar all week, but holed those putts today, and although I made a few mistakes, I saved a few of them, and made some birdies as well.
“We got one hole of the rain on the back nine, at the 14th, and I hit it into the trees there. I had to take a penalty drop as a result and did well to make a bogey, which was a really good momentum saver, as that could have been much worse.
“That last hole is brutal, and we had it into the wind today. I hit a three wood and a four iron to 50 feet and I was absolutely over the moon with it. It is one of the strongest finishing holes we will play all year.
“I was in a similar position in St Omer a few weeks ago, and my game wasn’t quite on there, but I feel much better this week. Obviously I have gained plenty of confidence in the last few days, and it has been a hectic week, but I’ve tried not to overdo it, which might be the new approach from now on.”
Alongside Hanson and Roos is Åkesson, who has been playing very well of late, after a tie for sixth last week at the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts. Like Hanson he fired a five under par score of 67 on Saturday, and will be eager to claim a maiden title at the end of 72 holes.
A shot adrift of the leaders is Alessandro Tadini, who has won four times on the Challenge Tour, but not since 2012.

He has come to Germany off the back of consecutive ties for 12th place at both the Fred Olsen Challenge de España and the Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open in recent weeks, and the Italian fired a 68 in the third round to be in contention on Sunday.

CHANNEL ISLAND IS MISSING THE TOURISM BOAT

An action shot from the Royal Jersey links. Picture taken from the Royal Jersey GC website.

WHY DOES JERSEY NOT PROMOTE

ITSELF AS A GOLF  HOLIDAY

DESTINATION?

ASKS COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Just back from a short break on the Channel Island of Jersey. Never been there before and wanted to test the water.
Verdict: Yes, my wife and I liked it and will go back for a longer stay at the same hotel.
We stayed at the two-star Runnymede Court Hotel at St Helier. Not expensive, good food and big helpings!
You can look up its website: www.runnymedejersey.com
Delightful Irish lady Mary O'Neil is in perpetual motion running the hotel and helping to serve breakfast and dinner
There are so many hotels on an island which is only nine miles wide and five miles deep, that Mary says the competition for hotel staff is very keen and she needs more.
If you fancy a summer/autumn job - the hotel closes for the winter - on Mary's staff, you can call her at 01534 720044 or by e-mail to Runnymede@troysleisure.com
On a golf note, there are something like six or seven nine and 18-hole courses, on Jersey, including the oldest and the best known, Royal Jersey (founded in 1878!) and La Moye (1902).
But the Jersey Tourism Office, does not seem to promote golf as one of the island's attractions. A missed opportunity in my humble opinion.
Now, if I were over there permanently, I would introduce a Jersey Golf Pass whereby you would buy a book of vouchers and play the courses at a discounted rate.
Royal Jersey is not one of the public courses but non-members are welcome in the afternoon.
And a Jersey Golf Festival, with a competition linking up the courses, would give the island a golfing focal point.
They know where to get me if they want my help!

COLIN MONTGOMERIE IN THIRD PLACE

LANGER HAS BIG LEAD IN CHARLES

SCHWAB CUP POINT TABLE

FROM THE US CHAMPIONS TOUR WEBSITE
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona– Bernhard Langer won his third tournament this season at last week’s Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship, the third major of the Champions Tour season. With his victory, Langer picked up double Charles Schwab Cup points, giving him an 882-point lead in the season-long race and has all but secured his place in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The Charles Schwab Cup Championship heads to Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, from Oct. 30 - Nov. 2.
Langer teed off his 2014 season by winning the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai in January for the second time in his seven years on the Champions Tour.
Four months later, Langer once again edged Fred Couples in the final round to pick up his second victory of the season at the Insperity Invitational.
At last week’s Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship, Langer headed into the final round with a three-stroke advantage yet his lead dwindled as he stumbled on the back nine.
It looked as if Jeff Sluman would pull off the win, but Langer made a 50-foot putt for birdie on No. 17 to keep him alive.
The two went into a playoff that Langer ended on the second extra hole when he sank a five-foot birdie putt to defeat Sluman for his first major championship win since 2010.
In addition to Langer’s three victories this season, he has also collected eight top-10 finishes. In his 12 starts this season, he has only finished outside of the top 10 once, a T20 at the Encompass Championship.
After a T3 finish at the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS, Russ Cochran received double Charles Schwab Cup points and jumped from No. 25 to No. 10 on the points list. It was his fourth top-10 finish this season, but his first top-10 finish at a major since the 2013 Regions Tradition.
The top 30 players on the points list after the AT&T Championship in October will qualify for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
Below are the top 10 on the Charles Schwab Cup points list:

ASTONISHING STORY OF MAN WHO WAS A WALKER CUP PLAYER

  • EX-U.S. NAVY OFFICER HURLEY

LEADS WITH A 63 AT GREENBRIER

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
  • Billy Hurley III has three top 10s so far this season. (Todd Warshaw/Getty Images) Billy Hurley III has three top 10s so far this season. (Todd Warshaw/Getty Images)
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, West Virginia: When he was growing up, Billy Hurley III celebrated the Fourth of July like most of the rest of us do. Throw some hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill in the afternoon and watch the sky erupt into a symphony of colours that night.
As he got older, though, Hurley learned to appreciate the meaning behind the holiday, the sacrifices made for freedom far and wide. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and served on a destroyer in the Persian Gulf.
So perhaps it was only fitting Friday, on the occasion of the nation's 238th birthday, that Hurley provided his own fireworks at The Greenbrier Classic, shooting a bogey-free 63 that propelled him to the top of the leaderboard at nine-under 131, a stroke ahead of Kevin Chappell (67-65) and Chris Stroud (66-66).
The only armed forces  veteran currently playing on the US PGA Tour owned a one-stroke advantage over Kevin Chappell and Chris Stroud when he polished off the lowest round of his 2014 season.
The significance of the day and what he accomplished in the scenic Alleghany Mountains was not lost on Hurley, either.
"Anytime you play well, it's great; right?" he said with a smile. "But certainly, there's special days of the year for our country, and ... being the only person playing this week who has served (in the military) ... it adds kind of stuff. So it's kind of pretty cool, I guess, to shoot 7 under on the Fourth of July."
And just as Hurley's military roots run deep, so do those of The Greenbrier, a sprawling, 710-room resort decked out in abundant red-white-and-blue bunting and nestled in the lush and verdant West Virginia mountains.
The resort, which has hosted 26 U.S. Presidents, changed hands between Conferedate and Union forces during the Civil War, and served as an army hospital during World War II. German and Japanese diplomats were interned here, too, and a top-secret facility to house Congress in the event of a nuclear attack was built at The Greenbrier during the Cold War.
So the synergy between the lieutenant and the location could not be missed on Friday.
By the time he reached junior high school, Hurley had known he wanted to attend the Naval Academy. It was the only college he applied to -- and luckily, he was admitted.
"Just kind of fell in love with the Naval Academy, and the tradition, honour, courage, commitment, all the ideals and the whole place really," he said. "It was definitely the right school for me."
Hurley was a talented golfer when he got to Annapolis, where he still lives, now with his wife and two sons. But as he is quick to point out, Hurley wasn't exactly a teenage phenom who would be putting a golf career on hold while he fulfilled his five-year service obligation after graduation.
"I obviously became a very nice player in college, but it wasn't like one of those sure things, like some of the guys out here who were pretty much going to be out here since they were 17 years old," he explained.
By the time he was a senior at the Naval Academy, though, Hurley was the No. 2-ranked amateur in the country. He graduated in 2004 with a degree in quantitative economics and began to think a career in golf might be a possibility after he got out of the Navy.
"That said, golf was completely a secondary kind of thing," Hurley said. "I was a naval officer first, and if you ask the people that I served with, they'd say that's for sure."
Hurley was first stationed on the USS Gettysburg in Mayport, Florida. But after six months, the Navy moved him off the ship so he could play amateur golf in what was a successful attempt to make the 2005 U.S. Walker Cup team.
He turned pro in March of 2006 while still on active duty and took advantage of sponsors' exemptions and Monday qualifiers to play in six US PGA Tour events, making two cuts.
Hurley petitioned the Navy to allow him to be released and transfer to the Reserves, not unlike David Robinson did. The NBA great, who was 2 inches above the height limit when he was admitted to the Naval Academy, was placed in a Reserves program to train civil engineers and only had to serve a two-year commitment after he graduated.
But Hurley's request was not accepted, so in July of 2007, he was transferred to the USS Chung Hoon, which was stationed in Pearl Harbour.
During that time, Hurley calls himself "recreational golfer," averaging a round of golf a month during the two years he served on the 10,000-ton guided missile destroyer.
Hurley was deployed twice, spending time in the Persian Gulf, protecting Iraqi oil platforms, as well as the Red Sea and South China Sea. The highlight was being the officer on the deck and driving the destroyer through the Suez Canal.
"(That) was awesome," Hurley said, grinning.
Once he completed his Naval commitment in 2009, Hurley spent about 18 months on the mini-tours before getting his Web.com Tour card for the 2011 season. A year later, after finishing 25th on the Web.com Tour money list, Hurley was a PGA TOUR rookie.
Hurley, who said the military taught him discipline and time management skills he now applies to his golf career, had two top-10 finishes on TOUR in 2012 but finished 151st on the money list.
So he spent one more year on the Web.com Tour before regaining his US PGA Tour card.
The 2014 campaign has been much more successful for Hurley, who posted his third top-10 of the season last week at the Quicken Loans National. The tournament, which is held at Congressional Country Club and hosted by Tiger Woods, has a strong military presence -- and Hurley has carried over the momentum this week.
"It's awesome," said Stroud, who played with Hurley on Friday and shot a 65.
"... He went to the military and took off three, four, five years of golf and comes out and gets his game back and gets on TOUR.
"There's a lot to be said about that. He couldn't be a more solid guy."
Hurley's 63 was not the lowest score of the second round. Troy Matteson shot a 61 - nine shots better than his first round - to be lying fourth at halfway on 133.
Among those who missed the cut on 140 were Brian Davis (69-75) and Darren Clarke (71-73), both on 144, and (Sir) Nick Faldo on 148 (71-77)
