HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

Back row - Linzi Wilson, Grant Carmichael, Scott Baird (capt). Front - Grant Looker, Barbara Ryan, Jonathan Clark and Joanna McIntosh

TILLICOULTRY TRIUMPHANT IN COUNTY MIXED FOURS.

Using home advantage to a maximum, Tillicoultry Golf Club took the 2014 Clackmannan County Mixed Foursomes title in some style. Played on a handicap basis these days, it was a contest between Alloa and Tillicoultry for the title, and it all came down to the last scores, and it was Tillicoultry that put the title beyond doubt with a fine score from Grant Carmichael and Barbara Ryan.  Best scratch score of the day (78) came from Tillicoultry Captain Scott Baird and Linzi Wilson
Regretfully only four Clubs participated with no teams forward from Alva or Tulliallan

FULL RESULTS (best 3 scores from 4 to count on handicap)

1.     Tillicoultry     214.0  (Grant Looker/Joanna McIntosh 72,  Scott Baird/Linzi Wilson 71.5,

4.     Dollar              237

     TOP FIVE PLACE FOR LAWRENCE

In one of his best performances in a Scottish            72 hole Order of Merit event, Alva’s Lawrence Allan finished a highly creditable 4th equal position at the weekend. With rounds of 67, 73, 72 and 70 at Lundin Links, it was still 16 shots behind the runaway winner Chris Robb.  However it does give Lawrence ranking points and a boost to his confidence with the Scottish Amateur Championship coming up at the end of July.

         SCOTT AT THE BRABAZON

Meanwhile Dollar’s Scott Borrowman was a couple of hundred miles away competing in the Brabazon Trophy which is the English Stroke Play Championship.  At Seaton Carew golf course, Scott made the cut with scores of 72 and 74, but could not improve his position when he finished with a couple of 76’s. His aggregate of a six over par 298 was  a good bit behind the winner’s 14 under par.

GRITTY VICTORY IN QUICKEN LOANS NATIONAL

  • JUSTIN ROSE WINS PLAY-OFF AT CONGRESSIONAL

BETHESDA, Md. -- The last time The Open Championship was played at Royal Liverpool, Justin Rose watched it on TV.
"Missed it because I wasn't very good," the good-natured Rose said candidly. "I was having a bit of a rough spell."

Indeed, he was. That Open was the sixth straight major in which Rose wasn't eligible to play. The man who has matured into a top-10 player in the world now calls it a "re-motivating" time in his career.

"I just remember (the course) being burnt out, really warm, people eating ice cream and Tiger winning," Rose said with a wry smile.

Times change.

And the 33-year-old Englishman will head to Hoylake among the favorites after his gritty victory in the Quicken Loans National at Congressional, which played like a major championship venue on Sunday.
Rose came up with a clutch par at the 17th hole and an even bigger 15-footer for a water-logged bogey at No. 18 to preserve his spot in a playoff with Shawn Stefani.

He then won the Quicken Loans National for the second time in five years with a par on the first extra hole after Stefani put his approach in the water.
"An amazing feeling in any sort of championship, when you make a putt like that that means something like that on the 18th hole, that's special," said Rose, who was one of just six players to break par on Sunday.

"And then the playoff, it was just up to me to not do what I did the first time around."

The playoff was the first in the eight-year history of the Quicken Loans National, as well as the first in Rose's PGA TOUR career. With the sixth victory of his career, the 2013 U.S. Open champion won for the first time since that hard-fought victory at Merion 54 weeks ago.
"It's a huge boost confidence-wise, yeah, for sure, because I've been semi-in contention this year," said Rose, who has six top-10s this season but nothing higher than fourth until Sunday.
"... I haven't really been playing with a lead all year. To do it and get it done and make key putts, that's huge for my psyche going into a major championship.
"And obviously for the rest of the year, gives me a nice boost: A nice boost into the FedExCup as the Playoffs are upon us; nice boost Ryder Cup points, probably takes that off my mind.

So yeah, it's a really nice time of year to have a victory and allows me to focus on exciting challenges now ahead."
Counting Merion and Congressional, which played to an average of nearly three strokes over par on Sunday, Rose has won on some of the game's stoutest courses -- including Aronimink, Cog Hill and Jack Nicklaus' Muirfield Village. So it should come as no surprise that he'll be looked at as a contender when the game's oldest major is played on the southwest coast of England in two weeks.
"I like this type of test," Rose said. "... This week you're going to miss greens; you're going to be challenged; you're going to have to grind and you're going to have to do everything at some point this week, and that's the type of golf I like, that tests all your skill sets. That's normally what major championships do."

STEFANI, HOFFMAN, MARTIN AND STEELE FOR HOYLAKE

FOUR AMERICANS BOOK OPEN

 PLACES THROUGH US PGA TOUR

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R and A

Bethesda, Maryland:  Shawn Stefani, Charley Hoffman, Ben Martin and Brendan Steele secured the four places on offer in The Open Championship after the final round of the Quicken Loans National at Congressiona
Stefani lost out to Justin Rose on the first hole of a play-off for the tournament but succeeded in qualifying for The Open at Royal Liverpool from July 17 to 20.
A closing one-under-par 70 left him on four-under-par for the tournament and level with Rose, who has already qualified for The Open. It will be the 33-year-old Texan’s first appearance in The Open but his second in a Major Championship after he finished tied 59th in the 2013 US Open at Merion.
“I have never been across the pond to play in Europe so I am really looking forward to it,” he said.
“It is going to be a great experience to play for the first time in The Open Championship. I was just trying to play well and playing well here has put me in the Championship. Now I can put my focus on The Open which is going to be so huge for me. I will take a lot away from it.”
Charley Hoffman finished one shot back on three-under-par after a final round 69 which included three birdies on the back nine.
The 37-year-old from San Diego has two wins on the PGA Tour including the 2010 Deutsche Bank Championship. He has made one appearance in The Open at Carnoustie in 2007 where he finished tied for 35th.
“I’m really excited to have earned my way back into The Open Championship,” he said. “I’m grateful for this format which allowed me to play my way in. The Open will be my first Major of the year so I’m extra-excited about getting to Hoylake in a few weeks.”
On the same mark as Hoffman was Ben Martin, the runner-up in the 2009 US Amateur Championship, who came in with a level-par 71 today.

The 26-year-old from South Carolina played in two US Opens and The Masters in 2010 as an amateur but this will be his debut in The Open.
“I have never played over there in The Open or the Amateur Championship so it will be a new experience for me and a learning experience,” he said. “I didn’t have it on my schedule yesterday but it is on my schedule now.

“I am very excited because I have never played golf further east than the East Coast of the United States. It is something that I knew would happen in my career eventually so I am excited that it is going to be in two weeks. Hopefully this is just the first of many Open Championships for me.”
Brendan Steele finished on two-under-par for the tournament and secured the final qualifying place thanks to his higher position in the Official World Golf Ranking than Argentinian Andres Romero with whom he tied. Brendon Todd was also on two-under-par but has already qualified for The Open. Steele, who won the Valero Texas Open in 2011 and went on to finish tied 19th in that year’s USPGA Championship, will be making his debut in The Open.
“I’m very disappointed to have finished the Quicken Loans National the way I did today, but the silver lining is that I earned my way into The Open Championship in two weeks,” said the 31-year-old from California.
“It should be a great experience. I have played over there a little bit and am really looking for to competing in this year’s Open Championship.”
The next events in The Open Qualifying Series, which comprises 14 events in nine countries on five continents, are the Greenbrier Classic on the US PGA Tour and the Alstom Open de France on the European Tour from  July 3 to 6
