LOW SCORING AT BMW INTERNATIONAL OPEN NEAR DUSSELDORF

WILLETT, CABRERA-BELLO SHARE

LEAD WITH EIGHT-UNDER 64s

REPORT BY EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
It may be two years since Danny Willett lifted the BMW International Open title at Gut Lärchenhof in Germany, but the Englishman picked up from exactly where he had left off during yesterday’s furst round to post s fine eight under 64 to join Rafa Cabrera-Bello in a share for the lead.
On a day of low scoring just outside Dusseldorf, US Open champion Martin Kaymer's return to action following the second major victory of his career saw his home crowd turn out in force to see the 29 year old post a one under 71 at Gut Lärchenhof.
That left Kaymer in a tie for 66th place on a hugely congested leaderboard which also has World No 2 Henrik Stenson at four under while World No 2 Sergio Garcia joined Kaymer on one under.
KEY QUOTES
Martin Kaymer: “It was a tough day for me on the greens.  It was very, very playable today.  I think it was the best conditions you can get here, but I didn't make many putts, especially the last five holes, while was on the green, it was probably the worst I can do and unfortunately I couldn't make any putts coming in.
“There are so many people that come out and expect you to play well and they expect you to play at least as good as two weeks ago. That's the way Germans are. But you have to lower your expectations which is quite difficult. But, you know, it's nice to play here even though it's quite exhausting.  There's a lot to do.”
Danny Willett: “We haven't missed a cut all year.  I Had to pull out of two events with a bad back, but we are playing some good golf and working really hard on the greens and it's starting to pay off nicely because you can turn average rounds into great rounds quite quickly when you hole a few nice putts.
“It's always nice to come back to a place you have won.  Hopefully there's many more to come on different courses around the world.  You remember where you hit shots from and did certain things from.  It's nice to come back.  Today felt very easy.  You kind of know your way around a bit more.”
Rafa Cabrera Bello: “It's really, really a good way to start.  I made four birdies on the front nine and three birdies on the back nine.  What I enjoyed most about the round was that I played pretty steady and I didn't have like a really high dip or any lows or anything.  I was just playing steady golf in the entire four and a half hours that we have been out there, so really, really pleased.”

CHILEAN OVERCOMES 32hr NIGHTMARE JOURNEY FROM MALAGA

TULLO AND BARNES LEAD WITH

 SIX-UNDER 65s at AVIEMORE

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Mark Tullo overcame a nightmare 32-hour journey en route to the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts to soar into a share of the first round lead, alongside Englishman Jason Barnes, courtesy of a six under par 65 at the Aviemore venue.
Both players carded bogey-free rounds to move one shot clear of a eight-strong chasing pack on 66 at the sun-kissed Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club.
But Tullo’s round was all the more impressive, given he had only arrived in the stunning mountain-side resort of Aviemore at 10pm the previous evening, having fallen foul of the chaos caused by an air traffic controller strike in France.
The Chilean was originally due to land on Scottish soil on Tuesday afternoon, but delays and cancellations added over 30 hours to his journey, meaning he had no practise round before signing for his lowest score of the season.
“It took me over 30 hours to get here from Malaga,” said the two-time Challenge Tour winner, whose second victory came in Egypt with a certain Rory McIlroy in the field as an invite.

“I was supposed to be here on Tuesday at 2pm, so it was a nightmare getting here.
“I even thought about grabbing a train from London, where I had a stop-over, because I was worried I might not make the tournament, but luckily enough I got here in the end.
“Luckily I had played here a couple of times before so I know this place very well, but it helped having good weather and I'm really happy with the round.
“I hit some good shots and made some good putts. I didn’t even have a chance of a bogey out there. It was very steady, I hit every green. It was an easy scoring day for me, no mistakes, and I hit 17 greens and made good birdies.”
Tullo, who has Scottish ancestry, is relishing the weather and the atmosphere at the Speyside venue and is feeling confident for the rest of the week.
“It’s amazing here in this weather,” he said. “I actually barely recognized the golf course without the wind.
“For me, Scotland with sunny weather is one of the best places in the world. Playing golf here with this weather is just priceless. It’s still fun with wind and rain but in this weather, this golf course is amazing. Hopefully the weather will help for the rest of the week. I'm feeling comfortable and calm.”
Barnes was also hugely impressed by the lay-out, which is set to the spectacular backdrop of the Cairngorm Mountains, and he feels his whole game has come together for the first time this year at the €250,000 event, one of the most prestigious of the Challenge Tour season.
“It’s a great place to be, just beautiful,” said the 30 year old. “It’s much different to what I'm used to at home. I can’t hear anything, no traffic, no noise. It’s brilliant.
“Everything is really coming together nicely for me. The confidence is starting to grow. There are a few holes out there that are tough driving holes and a few weeks ago I might have wimped out and hit less club just to hit the fairway, but today it was just going for it with the driver.
“I'm confident, definitely. Bring on tomorrow, hopefully we can get more weather like this and we can see how low I go.”
Former Challenge Tour Number One Michael Lorenzo-Vera was one of the eight players a shot off the pace on five under par, while two-time European Tour winner Bradley Dredge was one of those a shot further back in tied 11th.

SCOTTISH CHAMPION CULVERWELL MISSES CUT AT SEATON CAREW

DANIEL YOUNG'S PURPLE PATCH

HOISTS HIM INTO BRABAZON 3rd

Perth player Daniel Young (Craigie Hill), pictured, bounced back from a double bogey 7 at the second hole and a bogey four at the short sixth to finish the day in third place at the halfway stage of  the English amateur stroke-play championship for the Brabazon Trophy at Seaton Carew, Hartlepool in County Durham.
Young, who played on the US college circuit for four years as a Lynn University, Florida student,  birdied the seventh, eighth and ninth, had an eagle 3 at the 11th and then a birdie at the 12th.
A pair of 70s for a six-under-par tally of 140 over this par-73 links course has the former Cameron Corbett Vase winner  three shots behind the joint leaders, Englishmen Ben Stow (69-68) and Ryan Evans (71-66) on 137.
Scott Gibson (Southerness) is not far behind on 141 with scores of 72-69.
At the other end of the field, Scottish champion Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar), Gordon Stevenson (Whitecraigs)  and Callum Hill (Tantallon) missed the cut.
Culverwell shot 82-74 for 156 - 11 shots too many. Hill had scores of 74 and 75 for 149 and Stevenson 79-76 for 155

Record man Evans and Stow set for    head-to-head shoot-out

The cream came to the top on day two of the Brabazon Trophy with England international colleagues Ben Stow and Ryan Evans sharing the halfway lead on nine-under-par 137, three shots clear of the rest of the field.
When Stow returned 68 to go with his opening 69 it looked as if he would be out on his own. But Evans had other ideas and his bogey-free 66, seven under par, a record for the extended course, saw him catch his England team-mate.
Evans (image copyright Leaderboard Photography) was out in 30, the best of the championship, with five birdies and collected two more coming home despite the course growing drier by the minute after a second day of sunshine.
“It’s what I should have done yesterday but I didn’t hole any putts,” said Evans.
“I changed my putter last night and also changed my thought process. I was trying too hard and today I took it as a gentle game of golf. “If I like a course I usually play well and I like it here. It’s rewarding if you play well but punishes you if you don’t. But it is firming up so it will be interesting for the next couple of days.”
Course management was also a key ingredient in Evans’ game. He only used his driver twice and relied mostly on his two-iron. “Position off the tee is the key,” he confirmed.
Tomorrow he will be off last with Stow. “Ben is a good friend and colleague but tomorrow is all about business,” he added.
Stow, back from college in the United States, had six birdies in his 68 including all four par fives and, in contrast to Evans, relied a lot on his driver. He also felt his game has benefitted from his American experience.
“It’s definitely improved my long game,” he admitted. “If you don’t hit it straight over there you can’t score. It’s also improved my putting which enabled me to birdie all the par fives.
“I played really solidly today. With the firmness of the greens, the emphasis was on wedge play and I hit it really close. But there was nothing spectacular. I’ve only had one bogey in 36 holes but I’ve used my length to advantage.”
The England pair have a clear cushion over their rivals but with two rounds to play there is a lot of golf to be played.
Their closest rival is Scotland’s Daniel Young, who fired a second successive 70. He was on the back foot after a double-bogey seven at the second but replied with an eagle and four birdies.
More Celts are among those a further shot back with the Irish duo of Stuart Grehan and Gavin Moynihan and Scotland’s Scott Gibson on 141 along with Seb Crookall-Nixon, another member of the England squad cashing in on his American college experience.
However, overnight leaders Ciaran Doherty, Tom Fox and Norway’s Sebastian Mork Andersen found conditions a little trickier but are still in the hunt as are two more England men on 142, Michael Saunders and Ashley Chesters, both with 70s.
Another England man, Lancashire’s Paul Howard gave himself a mountain to climb after an opening 78 but he trimmed ten strokes off that to stay alive on 146.
The cut came at 147, one over par, with exactly 60 players surviving.
The importance of players checking their cards with their partners at the end of a competition round was underlined today when two were disqualified for signing for incorrect scores.
Daniel Brown from Yorkshire signed for a three when he took four on the seventh in his round of 73, while Cheshire’s Marcus Mohr met the same fate after a par four appeared on his card instead of a five in his opening round of 71.

ROBINSON LEADS BY ONE

NEWS RELEASE
James Robinson will take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Buildbase Open after following his course-record 63 with a two-under-par 70 in the second round of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro event at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Abingdon.

Jack Colegate (Deangate Ridge Golf Club) shot a second-round 66 (-6) to move to within one of the leader, and Marcus Armitage (Howley Hall Golf Club) is nine under after carding a 67 for his second 18.

Four golfers are tied fourth on seven under, including Darren Wright (Rowlands Castle Golf Club), who signed for the day’s best round, an eight-under 64.

Robinson won on the EuroPro at Slaley Hall in 2010, but as an amateur was unable to take home any money. The Southport and Ainsdale man had been in great form on Wednesday, shooting a bogey-free 18 to card the best score the Blue Course had seen in professional competition. ]

However, he began the second round with a bogey at the first. He steadied with pars on two and three and returned to nine under for the tournament with a birdie at four.
Par breakers at 13 and 15 took him two below the card and he saw the remainder of the back nine out to sign for 70.

“I played pretty well in the opening round,” said Robinson of his course-record 63 (-9). “I hit it great off the tee to get in good position on the fairways and was able to knock it close on the greens, which was really required because it was firm and bouncy. I hit my irons well and putted well, didn’t really miss much. It was a solid round.

“There was a bit of pressure on my second round because everybody had said what a good round Wednesday’s was but I stuck to my game plan and hit it well again.

“Unfortunately when I won on the EuroPro a few years ago I couldn’t get the money but it was a good experience to know I was good enough to compete and win at this level. It will be nice to win and be able to keep the £10,000 this time!

“I will be looking for more of the same in the final round. The weather won’t be too nice tomorrow so I will need to stick to what I am doing, don’t let anything interfere and take it one shot at a time.

“How much impact the weather has will depend on how it softens the course but we won’t know until we are here in the morning and can see what the weather is like. Whatever it is I will stick to my game plan and see what happens after those last 18 holes.”

The Buildbase Open carries a £40,000 prize fund with the winner receiving £10,000, which is crucial money to add to the Order of Merit from which the top five at the end of the season are rewarded with Challenge Tour categories for 2015.

The 54-hole strokeplay sees 168 of Europe’s best young golfers competing.
A cut to the leading 50 players and ties has now been made, with all golfers whose 36-hole score is one under par or better proceeding to play Friday’s final round, which will be filmed for a two-hour highlights package to be broadcast on Sky Sports on July 8 and spectator entry is free throughout the week.
