Greig Hutcheon followed up his runner-up finish in the Northern Open on Thursday by winning the top pro prize today (Saturday) in the Glencruitten Golf Club 36-hole pro-am

It was a fourth win of the season for the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre player who shot rounds of 63 and 57 for a four-under-par total of 120 over the par-62, 4,434yd course at the Oban venue.

Over a course with 10 par-3 holes and no par-5s, Hutcheon covered the first nine in only 26 shots, birdieing the second, third, fourth, seventh and eighth. He also had birdies at the 14th, 15th and 16th after the turn.

But it was not a perfect round - he bogeyed the 11th, 12th and 18th in his inward 31.

Hutch, who earned £4,000 for being runner-up in the PLGC Northern Open, added another £1,800 to his bank account with the Glencruitten performance, boosting his season's total to £16,222.
Runner-up at Glencruitten, beaten by three shots, was Craig Gordon (Edinburgh Golf Centre) who had scores of 64 and 59 for 123. Gordon had a bogey-free second round,highlighted by birdies at the sixth, seventh and 15th.
Craig earned £1,600, almost doubling the prizemoney he had earned previously this season. This was his best finish of the year so far.
Jason McCreadie (Buchanan Castle) 66-59, Chris Kelly (Cawder) 62-63 and Scott Herald (Mearns Castle) 67-58 tied for third place on 125 and each earned £1,200.

Overnight leader Fraser Mann (Carnoustie) sagged to a second-round 68 and a total of 129. He had no birdies but six bogeys today.
Jamie Fraser (Renaissance) led the "J G R" team of Jonathan McMillan (10), Glen Burrett (8) and Ronan Johnston (7) to victory in the team event with a 13-under-par total of 49.
Ross Electrical (pro Jason McCreadie) and The Tartan Tavern (pro Ross Dixon) also had scores of 49 but they lost out on a card countback.
EDITOR: I asked Greig if he and the rest of the Tartan Tour players enjoyed playing such a short course as Glencruitten. Here is his answer:
  "It was a great couple days in Oban at Glencruitten golf course which can only be described as epic ! The topology of the course is so extreme that the calculations of yardage with plus or minus due to slope can get very tricky. 
"There are two extremely  difficult par-4s - the first and the 12th - which really play as 5s. The par 3s are very tough with 7, 11, 15 and 17 being stand-outs.
"The 15th in particular is a stunning short hole to the edge of a ravine. The course is absolutely it's own style. There is nothing else like it with some incredible views of the Argyll scenery.
"All the Tartan Tour pros love the challenge and are extremely grateful to all the sponsors and members of Glencruitten Golf  Club for putting on such a great pro-am."

PAUL McKECHNIE MOVES UP TO

JOINT FOURTH WITH A 64

Former US college circuit player William Harrold from Norfolk will take a one-shot lead over a bunched leaderboard into the final round of the Belgian Challenge Open at Cleydael Golf and Country Club.
Harrold leads on 13 under par courtesy of his third round of 67, with Florian Fritsch and Rodolfo Cazaubon one shot adrift and a further six players just two shots off the lead.
Harrold, twice a winner of £10,000 jackpot prizes on the satellite EuroPro Tour this year, knows it will be a tough final day.
“I will just try to stay patient. There aren’t that many drives out there, so you have to put the ball in the right place,” said Harrold. “It sounds easy to do that, but you have to really find the right spots, and if you manage to do that you can really reward yourself.”
The Norfolk native might be facing the biggest challenge of his career on Sunday in northern Belgium, but his two EuroPro Tour wins will give him plenty of confidence.
“I’m looking for more of the same again, to take it one shot at a time and stay focused,” said Harrold, who went out in 32.
“On this golf course it is easy to get frustrated, because on every hole you feel like you can get a birdie. But I think I am quite humble, so I just take every round and shot as it comes.”
Fritsch, meanwhile, continued his consistent form this week with his third round in the 60s, a 69 meaning he will join Harrold in the final group out on Sunday.
However, the German, who played amateur golf alongside US Open Champion Martin Kaymer, feels there is plenty of room for improvement in his game.
“I struggled a lot with my wedges, I just couldn’t figure out the wind,” said Fritsch, who is looking for his maiden Challenge Tour win in Belgium.
“Sometimes I thought I had hit a good shot and it ended up being ten metres away, either short or long. It was a bit annoying and in addition I had two or three three-putts, so my putter was not as good. But my long game was better than yesterday, and the day before.”
Mexican Cazaubon has also been in contention throughout the week, but two bogeys in his last three holes mean he will play in the penultimate group on Sunday.
However, the North Texas University graduate is relieved to still have a chance going into the final round.
“I felt I played pretty well,” said the 24 year old. “I had to make a few up and downs, made a few three-putts, but I felt comfortable. I thought I was going to feel more nervous, but I was actually quite relaxed. The good thing is that I am still in the mix and we still have 18 holes left.”

Round of the day belonged to Edinburgh’s Paul McKechnie, pictured, who shot up the leaderboard into a tie for fourth courtesy of his round of 64.
Alongside Braid Hills man McKechnie, two shots back from the leaders, is a group which includes first round leader Dave Coupland, France’s Joël Stalter and Friday’s overnight leader Jason Palmer, setting the stage for a thrilling finish at Cleydael Golf and Country Club.

Mikko Ilonen birdied the closing hole at Fota Island Resort to retain the outright lead going into the final round of the Irish Open, but Englishman Danny Willett and home favourite Graeme McDowell ensured it will be a captivating conclusion in Cork.
Ilonen battled to a two under par third round of 69 for a 12 under par total, but his two-stroke overnight advantage was halved after Willett surged through the field, shaving a shot off Ilonen’s own course record of 64, which was set on Thursday.
Willett holed his eight iron tee shot for an ace on the 165 yard par three seventh hole, and posted six birdies, including three in a row over the closing holes, in a round of 63 to move into second place on 11 under par.
An impressive crowd of 28, 173 lined the fairways hoping that McDowell could give himself a chance of becoming the first home winner of the Irish Open since Shane Lowry in 2009.
While the 2010 US Open Champion struggled with his putter, carding back-to-back bogeys before the turn, he picked up three shots on the way in and is just two shots off the pace in third place following a round of 69.

Mikko Ilonen: “I've been leading all the way this week and I’ve been handling the pressure of the lead pretty well so far, so I'm expecting not to do anything else tomorrow.
“It was a good finish today.  The birdie on 18 in front of that crowd is a great feeling.  The day overall was very much the same as yesterday.  I played pretty much the same all the way.”
Danny Willett: “[On his hole in one]: “It was the perfect number with an eight-iron, I hit it a little bit to the left and it just started moving in at the end, I never expected it to slam dunk into the hole so that was a bit of a bonus.
“I also holed out with a wedge, so it was just one of those days when things go your way. I just hope I haven’t used up all my luck for tomorrow!”
Graeme McDowell: “Winning the Irish Open would be special on many levels. It would be a kick-starter for my season, and it would be a big boost in the World Rankings and Ryder Cup points. 
"But most importantly, to win here in front of my home fans, with everything that’s gone on in Irish golf lately, with The Open Championship announcement and Rory and his Olympic announcement this week, I think it would be fun to do the biz tomorrow.”

Fifer James White from Lundin, having made the halfway cut with only one shot to spare, improved to joint 22nd with a one-under-par 70 in the third round of this weekend's Alps Tour event in france, La Mirabelle d'Or International Open at Golf de la Grange aux Ormes.
White, whose earlier rounds were 72 and 75, is now on the five-over 218 mark, 13 shots behind the French leader Xavier Poncelet (69-67-69).
Michael Stewart from Ayrshire is joint 27th with scores of 75, 68 and 75 for 218.
Edinburgh's John Gallagher is sharing 43rd place with rounds of 73, 74 and 76.

BRADLEY NEIL v SOUTH AFRICAN IN 

SUNDAY'S BRITISH AMATEUR FINAL

Blairgowrie's teenage Bradley Neil will play South African Zander Lombard in the 36-hole final of the British Amateur championship at Royal Portrush GC, Northern Ireland tomorrow.
In this afternoon's semi-finals, Neil bt fellow Scot Connor Syme (Dumfries and County) by 2 and 1.
Lombard beat England's Sean Towndrow by 1 hole in the other semi-final.

In the morning quarter-finals, Syme won at the 19th against Irish open amateur stroke-play champion Jamie Savage (Cawder) 
Neil had a comfortable win over Icelander Haraldur Magnus.
Neil, winner of the Scottish U18 boys championship last year and pipped in a play-off by Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) for the St Andrews Links Trophy last weekend, is the second highest Scot in the world amateur rankings. Forrest is the only Scot above him.

 Scotland will face South Africa in the final of the 119^th Amateur Championship for the first time in 17 years. Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil meets South African Zander Lombard in tomorrow’s 36-hole final at Royal Portrush.
Neil, pictured,  defeated fellow Scot Connor Syme 2 and 1 in the semi-final while Lombard survived a tight battle with Southport and Ainsdale’s Sean Towndrow. 
The 19-year-old from Pretoria won by one hole.

Neil immediately called his mother Amanda after winning. Both were struggling to cope with his achievement. “We got pretty emotional,” Neil said. 

“We both know what this could do. I think Zander knows the same. This is life changing. I never thought I’d be in the final. The doors it can open and the events it can get you into are just incredible.”

A run of four bogeys in five holes from the 8th hole by Syme let Neil take control of the match and, although he lost the 13th and the 15th, he was able to see it out with pars at the 16th and 17th.

The 18-year-old is having the best season of his life with seven top ten finishes, including three runner-ups and two third places. His latest runner-up finish came in a play-off loss at the recent St Andrews Links Trophy and he has climbed to 38th on the World Amateur Golf Ranking^TM.

The winner will have the opportunity to play in The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and next year’s US Open at Chambers Bay and traditionally receives an invitation to the Masters.

“You think about that coming into the week and every day,” admitted Neil. “I definitely thought about it more than once today. It’s hard to put something like that to the back of your mind. You have to try to use it as motivation to win each match.

“I’m really looking forward to tomorrow. I’m not going to shy away from the occasion. I’m going to play the golf I have been playing the last few days. I know he’s going to want to win just as badly as me but if he’s going to beat me it’s not going to be easy. I believe this is my time. My confidence is there, my game’s there. I just need to bring it on the day.”

Lombard is currently ranked 59^th on the World Amateur Golf Ranking^TM but has been as low as 48^th. He won the recent KwaZulu-Natal Amateur Championship and is in good form.

After taking an early lead after two holes against Towndrow, Lombard found himself two down after seven. He won the eighth and ninth holes, however, and then took the 12^th and 14^th to give himself a cushion over the last few holes.

“It was a tight match but you expect that at this level” Lombard said. “It’s always going to be the one who makes the least mistakes.”

As with Neil, he was struggling to come to terms with the enormity of the achievement. “It’s the goal every amateur wants – to get to the final and have a chance to win The Amateur. I don’t think it’s hit me yet but it’s definitely a nice feeling to know I have beaten pretty much the best out there. Being in the final is just amazing.”

Lombard is bidding to become the second South African winner since Bobby Coles in 1966. He is the first South African in the final since Trevor Immelman lost to Scot Craig Watson at Royal St George’s in 1997.
