LAW DRIVES AHEAD WITH A 68 IN

PAUL LAWRIE NORTHERN OPEN

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Challenge Tour player David Law continued his recent good form to lead the field with a three-under-par 68 at the end of a windy opening day at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Northern Open championship at Murcar Links today (Tuesday).
Law, who plays out of

the Paul Lawrie "stable," was one of only three players to return sub-70 scores over a tight course in testing conditions.
He leads by one shot from Buchanan Castle's Jason McCreadie and Neil Fenwick (Dunbar). Nobody in the field of 105 who finished before 3pm could do better than one-over-par 72s.
James Byrne, bidding to become the first man since Eric Brown in the mid-1950s to win the Northern Open three years in a row, had the misfortune to be first off the tee at 8am - long before the wind dropped slightly.

Byrne was blown away to an 84, which included a 9 at the par-4 ninth where he shanked an iron off the tee on to the beach.
Many players kept their drivers in their bags, fearing that if they missed the fairways they were in double bogey territory with punishing rough waiting the errant shot.
But Law had a completely different frame of mind - and it paid off.
"I consider my driving to be the strongest part of my game and with the course playing very long, I was not prepared to make it play even longer by taking an iron off the tee," said the 23-year-old Aberdonian who won the Northern Open in 2011 and was runner-up to Byrne last year at Meldrum House.
Playing on the Challenge Tour has undoubtedly raised Law's level of confidence.
"I've settled down on the Challenge Tour and I'm beginning to get better results. I had my first top 10 finish in last week's event so I'm encouraged that I've brought that kind of form home with me for the Northern Open. I love this event and maybe it shows in the scores I get in it."
That gave him a one-stroke lead over Jason McCreadie, who finished about half an hour before him with a 69, and also Neil Fenwick who was one of Law's playing partners..
Law birdied four of the first 14 holes - sinking a 12ft putt for a 3 at thE second, two-putting the par-5 fourth, holing a 6ft putt at the 10th and wafting a seven-iron tee shot followed by an 18ft putt into the hole for a birdie 2 at the 12th.
Then he got home in two for a two-putt birdie at the long 14th before parring in from there.
Law wasn't perfect in the conditions saw an average score in the mid to higher 70s. He dropped shots at the seventh and 13th (three putt).
Buchanan Castle tour pro Jason McCreadie, who finished his round at 3.30pm , was the first man to get under the testing par of 71
Winner of this title at Skibo Castle in 2004 and again in 2006, McCreadie shot a two-under-par 69
McCreadie who will be 44 on July 30, birdied the first, third, fourth, 12th and 14th with a bogey at the sixth and a double bogey at the seventh.
"I had a fair bit of luck out there. I holed my fourth shot from about 80 yards for a birdie at the long fourth. That could easily have been a double bogey," said Jason who was out in 36 and back in 33..
"I only used my driver twice. Once to hit it way right at the fourth and the second time to hit a provisional ball off the same tee.
"After that I just tried to keep the ball in play. I holed a few putts and that helped.
"The dangerous holes are the sixth and eighth with the wind ready to blow you off line.
"But I covered the last 11 holes in two under par, thanks to the birdies at the 12th and 14th."
Like leader Law, Neil Fenwick has been strenghening his game away from the Tartan Tour.
"I've been concentrating on the EuroPro Tour and I've achieved some encouraging results. I hope to get on to the Challenge Tour through that tour," said the Dunbar man whose 69 was highlighted by birdies at the first, fourth and short fifth in an outward 33. He got one more birdie, at the 14th, but dropped his only two shots at the 11th and 38th in 36 home.
"It is so tight out there off the tee," said Fenwick, "but I hardly missed a fairway. Nice to play what I would describe as a proper Northern Open links course."

Greig Hutcheon, pictured right on the first tee today, who had a 73, echoed that sentiment.
"This felt like playing a British Open course and the wind made it harder to score .... lots of punishing rough, narrow fairways but they're firm so if you could get your drives down them, they ran a fair bit. Every Northern Open should be played on a tough links like this ... just like Carnoustie in 1999 when our tournament sponsor, Paul Lawrie won the Open, of course."

A surprise "failure" in the late afternoon was Scottish PGA champion Gareth Wright with a 79 which included an outward half of 43, the lowlight of which was a quadruple bogey 7 at the seventh.

The Welshman, based at the West Linton club in the Lothians, is pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency above on the first tee today.

A FOGGY DAY PUTS THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP BEHIND SCHEDULE

Play suspended for the day in the Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush and Portstewart

FROM THE R and A WEBSITE
Play has been suspended for the day in the Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush and Portstewart due to persistent fog.
Play will resume at both courses at 7.30am on Wednesday 18 June.  Competitors who have commenced their second round and have discontinued play due to the suspension are required to report to their assigned venue for a roll call at 7.00am.
Both clubhouses and practice grounds will be open at 6.00am.
A revised second round draw will be posted on Championships.RandA.org later this evening.  However, competitors should contact the Championship Office on 01334 213 400 (option1) if there are any questions.
Only limited play was possible this morning before thick fog enveloped both courses. This resulted in an 8hr 13min delay at Royal Portrush and a four and a half hour delay at Portstewart.
Play resumed at both courses but was subject to further suspensions throughout the afternoon.

MONDAY MORNING DISCOVERY THROUGH HOW DID I DO WEBSITE,,,,

 STEVEN McINTOSH DISQUALIFIES

HIMSELF FROM WINNING ROSS CUP

REPORT FROM ROBIN WILSON
A second North county championship cup winged its way to the greenkeepers' sheds of the Torvean Golf Club last Saturday but before Head Greenkeeper Steven McIntosh got time to celebrate his 8th capture of the title he had to disqualify himself.
The previous weekend at Royal Dornoch his assistant greenkeeper , Darren Hexley, had won for the first time the Sutherland County Cup but for McIntosh, a firm favourite at the Muir of Ord Golf Club where he emerged as a leading junior player in the mid-1980s, his record capture of his native Ross-shire cup turned to despair when on Monday morning he had to telephone his club secretary about a mistake on his first round score card.
The 46 year old first last won the Ross-shire title at Muir of Ord in 2008 and previously in 1989,1996,1997, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
In addition he had claimed the North District Association championship three times in the 1990s.and it was to the recently crowned North District Champion, Tain's Dougie Thorburn (Tain) that he had to give up the Ross-shire title last Monday after discovering his error.
After checking Muir of Ord's “How Did I Do Website” on Monday morning he realised his first round card figures were wrong at two holes. His playing partner and card marker had entered 3 5 3 4 which added to 15 for the first four inward holes but his figures were actually  3 4 5 3 (also adding to 15), but retaining a correct  first round gross score of 72.
But with  a lower score than actually taken marked down for the 12th hole he imposed the resulting disqualification penalty on himself and the cup and silver medal will have to pass to Thorburn.
To play in the competition was a late decision by McIntosh and having played very little competitive golf this year he did not rate highly his chances of regaining the title and arrived at Muir of Ord armed with only a half set of clubs.
After posting his first round 72 he put his mind to the task and still with only seven clubs  fashioned  his way round his boyhood course to a remarkable one under par card of 67 in the second round after covering the home stretch in 31 to catch and overtake the cup holder, Tain's Munro Ferries.
Ferries had a first round share of the lead with his club mate and new North District champion, Dougie Thorburn, from Thurso, but in the afternoon rain Ferries slipped back to 73 while Thorburn, who led through 27 holes from a second round outward half of two under par 33, bogeyed five inward holes for 38 and 71 to post a gross 140 but now adds the Ross-shire title to the Caithness title which he won when a member of Thurso Golf Club.
Ferries was elevated to runner up and recipient of the bronze medal after cards of 69 and 73..
Also receiving a late entry, McIntosh's playing partner, local Sandy Rose brought in the leading nett aggregate total.
Eight handicapper Rose improved on his first round nett card of 72 with a second round gross 74 for nett 66 and win the handicap voucher by virtue of the better second round score from his clubmate Martin Gray (12) 138 (69 69).

JASON McCREADIE FIRST MAN TO BREAK PAR AT WINDY MURCAR LINKS

Jason McCreadie, PLGC Northern Open pacemaker with a two-under-par 69. Picture by Andy Forman.
McCREADIE GOES CLEAR WITH A 69

BUT 'I HAD MY SHARE OF LUCK

Buchanan Castle tour pro Jason McCreadie became the first man to get under the testing par of 71 on a windy opening day at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Northern Open championship at Murcar Links.
Winner of this title at Skibo Castle in 2004 and again in 2006, McCreadie shot a two-under-par 69 to open up a three-shot lead over Stephen Craig (Craig Golf 79).
"I only used my driver once. Once to hit it way right at the fourth and the second time to hit a provisional ball off the same tee.
"After that I just tried to keep the ball in play. I holed a few putts and that helped.
"The dangerous holes are the sixth and eighth with the wind ready to blow you off line. I hit it right and that cost me a bogey at the sixth and then the seventh was a double bogey.
"But I covered the last 11 holes in two under par, thanks to the birdies at the 12th and 14th."

Defending champion James Byrne was blown away to an 84, which included a 9 at the ninth, and, with only the leading 36 and ties to survive the 36-hole cut, the Bangkok-based Banchory man is in danger of not being around at Murcar for the decisive final 36 holes on Thursday.
McCreadie demoted 54-year-old Edinburgh-born Stephen Craig, who lives at Carnock near Dunfermline since his return to Scotland after 30 years in Germany.
Craig, pictured right, shot a 72 by hitting most of the fairways and avoiding the penal round. Choking down on a driver, he steered his ball down the middle most of the time.
"I hit the ball quite solidly and had two birdies and three bogeys. It's tough out there with the wind and the rough but I liked it," said Craig
"I haven't in the Northern Open since 1992, when it was also here at Murcar. I've been over there in Germany since then but I've come back home to get back into playing the game."

TITLE-HOLDER'S HAT-TRICK DREAMS SHATTERED

Northern Open championship at windy Murcar Links. Picture by Cal Carson Golf Agency

JAMES BYRNE HAS NIGHTMARE 84

Defending champion James Byrne's dreams of becoming the first man since Eric Brown in the 1950s to win the Northern Open three times in a row turned into a nightmare on the first day of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre-sponsored £35,000 72-hole championship at a windy Murcar Links.
Byrne, who had several shanks, struggled round in 13-over-par 84, the low point of which was a 9 at the par-4 ninth.
"I shanked the ball with an iron off the tee on to the beach. Eventually lost that ball," said Bangkok-based Byrne who set the low Northern Open aggregate record at Meldrum House last year when he retained the title he won at the same venue in 2012.
"A strong wind, narrow fairways and deep rough add up to a very tough test and I think that anyone scoring par of thereabouts will lead at the end of the day," said James who had a hole in one at the fifth in Monday's curtain-raising pro-am
Byrne required 44 blows for the first nine holes with a first shot shed at the long fourth, followed by a double bogey 6 at the sixth and then that quadruple 9 at the par-4 ninth
Things did not get much better after the turn. He had a double bogey 5 at the short 13th and single shots dropped at the 13th, 15th and short 16th before he gained his only bogey of the day - a 3 at the 17th. He bogeyed the 18th for 40 shots home.
"I'm afraid I just didn't play very well at all," said Byrne who is in serious danger of not making the cut which will reduce the field to the leading 36 players and ties at the end of Round 2.
Playing partner Kenny Hutton, winner of a PGA senior title earlier in the season, was one of Byrne's partners. The Muir of Ord man returned a 75 with birdies at the first, short 12th, long 14th and 18th. He had three double bogey 6s - at the sixth, 11th and 13th in halves of 39 and 36.
The third member of that first group off the tee at 8am was host club pro Gary Forbes. He had it going for him with 36 to the turn but he bogeyed the 13th, double-bogeyed the 17th and had a quadruple bogey 8 at the 18th.
"I was the only one playing golf out there for a spell. But I just lost my concentration over the last few holes. I can hardly believe I finished 6-8 (six over par for the two holes)," said Gary.
Scott Henderson (Kings Links), winner of the Northern Open in a gale-force wind on the last day at Cruden Bay in 1996, took over the early clubhouse lead at Murcar Links with a three-over par 74.
"It's like a British Open links on a smaller scale out there. We are playing off the back tees today and it makes a very big difference," said Scott.
"But you dare not take your driver off the tee because you are very likely to lose balls if you miss the fairway, the rough is so punishing.
"Just no point in risking a driver in these difficult windy conditions. If you miss the fairways you can be in deep trouble."
Henderson birdied the second, 15th and 16th in halves of 36 and 38.

Jason McCreadie's 69, returned about 3.30pm, demoted 54-year-old Edinburgh-born Stephen Craig, who lives at Carnock near Dunfermline since his return to Scotland after 30 years in Germany.
"I haven't played in the Northern Open since 1992, when it was also here at Murcar. I've been over there in Germany since then but I've come back home to get back into playing the game."

ROUND OF 66 OVER DUNLUCE LINKS AT ROYAL PORTRUSH

DANIEL BROWN SETS PACE IN AMATEUR QUALIFYING FIRST ROUND
FROM THE R and A WEBSITE
Yorkshire's Daniel Brown seized the initiative on the first day of the Amateur Championship with a four-under-par round of 66 on the Dunluce links at Royal Portrush which gave him a one-shot lead over Frenchman Mathieu Fenasse.
Four players finished with three-under-par scores of 68 at Portstewart; Liam Johnston from Dumfries and County, Ryan Evans from Wellingborough, Denmark’s Victor Fasmer Henum and France’s Kenny Subregis.
At Royal Portrush England's Ben Wheeler, Sweden's Hannes Ronneblad and Andrew Schomewille from Australia scored 68 for two-under-par rounds.
Sunshine and a fresh sea breeze greeted the competitors for round one of the 119th Amateur Championship played at Royal Portrush and Portstewart golf clubs.
A field of 288 players, representing 28 different countries, will play a qualifying round of stroke play over each course before the leading 64 and ties will take part in the match play stages at Royal Portrush. The 36-hole final will be played on Saturday.
Brown, who represented the victorious England team in the 2012 Boys Home Internationals and is a former Yorkshire Amateur champion, birdied three of his opening five holes at Royal Portrush before dropping shots on the 6th and 7th. A further shot slipped on the 10th but four birdies on the back nine were enough to give him the round one lead.
“I got off to a good start and holed a nice putt at the third,” said the 19-year-old. “The pin was tucked away at the back left and I holed from about 25ft. That was a nerve settler. My game plan was to keep it in play and find the fairways as I knew the rough was penal and it is tight in places. I did that pretty well today.
“I had a bit of a wobble in the middle of the round but came back strongly and had a really good back nine. I won’t change my game plan for tomorrow but it’s nice to have a bit of a cushion here in case you have a bad spell.”
Dumfries and County’s Liam Johnston started his round at Portstewart with two birdies, holing a 45 foot putt on the second green to get his first qualifying round well underway.  The 21-year-old went onto card a further three birdies on the 10th, 12th and 14th to return a three-under-par 67.
“I started really well and played steadily. I putted well all day which helped my confidence. My goal at the start of the week is to get into the top 64. I got a new coach two weeks ago which has helped boost my confidence. I will try and just play the same tomorrow and keep hitting greens.”
Six players scored two-under-par rounds of 69 at Portstewart including the 2014 Welsh Amateur Open Stroke play Champion Toby Tree (Worthing) and France’s Paul Barjon who will be aiming to improve on his quarter-final finish at Royal Cinque Ports last year. At Royal Portrush three players finished on the same total.
Ireland’s Paul Dunne carded a one-under-par 70 at Portstewart while Cormac Sharvin was level-par after a 70 at Royal Portrush.
Scots Grant Forrest, who won the St Andrews Links Trophy earlier this month, and the Boys Amateur champion Ewen Ferguson were both on two-over-par. The second stroke play round gets underway at 7am today (Tuesday)
