SO WHO'S GONNA BE SECOND TO THE PEERLESS GERMAN?
KAYMER DOES IT AGAIN! ANOTHER 65
SETS 36-HOLE U S OPEN RECORD
SETS 36-HOLE U S OPEN RECORD
PINEHURST, North Carolina -- Martin Kaymer continues to walk in uncharted territory at Pinehurst No 2.
Having set the record low for a U.S. Open round here on Thursday, the German matched it on Friday while on his way to more records.
Kaymer shot his second consecutive 65 and is now at 130 (10 under) through 36 holes. No player in the 114-year history of the U.S. Open had been that low through two rounds.
"I don't know what to say," Kaymer said after his round. "It's just very, very solid. It gets boring, the words that I use, but I mean, there's not much to say. It's just good right now, the way I play golf."
Indeed. When Kaymer walked off the course, he held a commanding eight-shot lead, albeit with the afternoon wave having just teed off.
Still, to follow his opening 65 with another 65 at the U.S. Open is unprecedented.
"For him to come out today and back it up is super," world No. 1 Adam Scott said of Kaymer. "If he does it for two more days, then we're all playing for second spot."
Scott is at even par after his 67. Dustin Johnson (69), Keegan Bradley (69), Brendon de Jonge (70) and Brooks Koepka (68) were the closest to Kaymer in the clubhouse at 2 under midway through the second round.
Kaymer's round Friday was bogey-free; there were no bogey-free rounds on Thursday.
Kaymer's 130 total is the lowest 36-hole score at the U.S. Open; Rory McIlroy held the previous low at 131 in 2011 at Congressional. McIlroy, however, was at 11 under while Kaymer is at 10 under.
No matter.
"He's dialed in," said Bradley, one of Kaymer's playing partners. "He's as dialled in as I've seen anyone."
The largest 36-hole lead in U.S. Open history is six shots, by Tiger Woods in 2000 and McIlroy in 2011. The afternoon wave -- which includes Phil Mickelson -- will now be challenged to start cutting into Kaymer's lead.
But Kaymer doesn't plan to take his foot off the gas this weekend.
"It's not a done deal," he said.
Kaymer started his second round off the 10th tee and promptly birdied the par-5 hole. He also birdied the par-4 13th and 16th holes to reach the turn at 3 under for his round.
He followed with birdies the par-4 third and par-5 fifth, then survived a couple of shaky iron shots down the stretch, thanks to his solid short game.
"The last three, four holes, I got a little bit tired," Kaymer said. "I didn't swing as good as the first 14 holes."
Kaymer has missed just three fairways in the first two rounds, and on Friday, he hit 15 of 18 greens.
