George Burns with the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy at Cardrona.

BURNS BEATS CURRAN IN PLAY-OFF

 FOR STEPHEN GALLACHER TROPHY
REPORT FROM SGU WEBSITE
Williamwood’s George Burns sank an eight-foot birdie putt at the first extra play-off hole to cap a superb final day and win the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy at Macdonald Cardrona, near Peebles.
The Scotland boy international posted a six-under par 67 in the final round – which would have equalled the course record but for the preferred lies ruling – to tie Harburn’s Christopher Curran on 214, five-under par after 54 holes.
Burns fired 10 birdies in his round, opening with three consecutive birdies, while Curran produced his own hat-rick of birdies in his back nine from the 13th to move into a share of the lead after regulation play.
At the first extra hole, Curran found trouble off the tee, but recovered to salvage a par 5, but Burns got down in two from 60 feet for birdie to take his first Scottish Hydro SGU Boys Order of Merit title.
Overnight leader Ben Kinsley (St Andrews) dropped three shots in the final two holes to slip back to third place on 218, with Cawder’s Calum Fyfe producing a fine two-under 71 to clinch fourth spot, a further shot back on level par.
Burns follows last year’s winner, Ewen Ferguson, who went on to win the British boys championship at at Hoylake before clinching the Scottish boys championship at West Kilbride earlier this year.

REID WINS BATTLE of PAST CHAMPIONS

TO EARN PLACE IN LINKS SEMI-FINALS

Leading qualifier Barry Reid beat Stewart Finnie in an all-Caledonian battle of former champions in tonight's quarter-finals of the Aberdeen Links championship at the Kings Links.
Reid was the winner by 2 and 1 and will play Ron Evett (Northern) in Monday's first semi-final.
The Reid-Finnie tie was a seesaw affair. Reid won the first three holes then lost the next three. Reid then regain the initiative by winning the eighth and nine to be two up at the turn.
Finnie halved his deficit by winning the 13th but lost the 15th and halves at the 16th and 17th clinched victory for Reid.
The second semi-final will feature Bon Accord's Chris Somers and A Doig (Caledonian).
In the quarter-finals, Somers won by 2 and 1 against clubmate Matty Greig who, on Wednesday night, defeated title-holder Barrie Edmond, winner
of the championship three times in the past four years.
Doig earned his place in the last four with a 4 and 3 win over D Leslie (Northern).

CARRICK NEILL SCOTTISH OPEN AMATEUR STROKE PLAY CH/SHIP

HILL AND SMAIL LEADING SCOTS AT

END OF FIRST ROUND AT PANMURE

It's six years since Wallace Booth was the last Scot to win the Scottish men's open amateur stroke-play championship.
The odds against a compatriot beating a star-studded field this weekend are quite long.
Leading the field at the end of a long first day at Panmure in the 2014 72-hole championship, sponsored by Carrick Neill, is a 22-year-old Australian Geoff Drakeford on the back of an excellent round of five-under-par 65 (34-31) which included birdies at three of the last five holes.
The man from the state of Victoria will be hoping he does better than 12 months ago when he missed the cut in this championship at Southerness.
Nick Marsh (Huddersfield), with a 66, is his closest overnight challenger, followed by Paul Howard (Southport and Ainsdale) in third place on 67 and Walker Cup Welshman Rhys Pugh on 68.

The leading
Scots are
Calum Hill (Tantallon), pictured right, and Greg Smail (Craigielaw), pictured left, two of seven players sharing fifth place on 69. Hill and Smail are students at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
Another Scottish student at an American University, Grant Forrest (San Diego and Craigielaw), the top Scot in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and Scottish amateur champion at Dornoch in 2012, did not do so well.
He had a 73 to be sharing 41st place.
Forrest is on the qualifying tightrope in the second round because only the leading 40 and ties will survive the cut on Saturday evening to play two rounds on Sunday.

SECOND-ROUND 67 LIFTS COMRIE MAN UP TO JOINT 17th

WALLACE BOOTH IN TOP 20 AT

HALFWAY IN CZECH CHALLENGE

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
On a much dryer day at the D+D REAL Czech Challenge, overnight leader Daniel Gaunt saw his advantage over the field cut to one after a second round of 69 at Golf and Spa Kunetická Hora.
Four birdies and a solitary bogey at his penultimate hole, the eighth, saw the Englishman finish at 11 under par 133 through 36 holes and narrowly ahead of his nearest rival Chris Lloyd.
Starting the round seven strokes adrift of Gaunt, who was out in the morning on day two, did not daunt Lloyd. He carded six unanswered birdies to post a 66 of his own in the afternoon and pull within touching distance of the leader going into the weekend, having not dropped a shot all week. Three shots further back are Edouard Espana and Pontus Widegren, but it is Gaunt who, although slightly disappointed with his score, remains out in front heading into the weekend. “It was good out there today,” said the 35 year old. “I felt like I could have shot eight under again, but the putts didn’t quite drop. I feel like I putted good again but nothing went in, so to walk off with three under is a little bit disappointing, but as I’m 11 under and one clear, I can’t really complain.
“Some days you see the line and some days you don’t, and today I just had to grind it out, try and hole a putt somewhere along the line and just stay patient. I did that today, and we’ve got the weekend to go now.
“I’m a good front runner, but if people start chasing me down I’ll just have to keep playing and take it one shot at a time. I’ve won before, but I’d like to have won more, that’s what we’re here for. It’s going to be fun over the next couple of days.” Lloyd is still in search of a maiden win on the Challenge Tour, and returns to the second tier of European golf having lost his place on The Race to Dubai last season.
He has been going through some swing changes of late after a return to his childhood coach, and after a tie for 17th last week at the Kärnten Golf Open presented by Mazda – and with his form so far this week in the Czech Republic – it looks like that hard work is starting to pay off.
“Very steady again today,” said the Bristolian. “Lots of patience involved as I was only one under through my first nine holes, then I just found a bit of a groove on the back nine and played really nice. I only holed one nice putt on the sixth, whereas everything else was inside ten feet for my birdies. “All players look at leaderboards, and you try not to get too caught up in it, but it was the same as yesterday. I kept a good attitude and did what I do best, although patience is not exactly a family trait. That nine holes is the best I’ve hit it and swung it for as long as I can remember though, especially my iron play, which was great.
“I learned a lot about myself last year on The European Tour, and coming back here motivates you to get back up, it keeps you going forward. It’ll just be the same again over the weekend, keep a good attitude and the rest will take care of itself.” There was also plenty for home favourite Lukáš Tintěra to get excited about, as not only did he shoot a 67 to finish at one under and be the only Czech player to make the cut, but he also had a hole in one.
His ace on the par three eighth hole earned him a watch worth around €35,000, which is reward for holding home hopes on his shoulders through the final two rounds.
Wallace Booth continues to be the top performing Scot. The man from Comrie is lying T17 on 140, following up a 73 with a seven-under-par 67.
Players with totals of level par 144 and better qualified for the weekend rounds. Andrew McArthur missed it by one and Grantown on Spey's Duncan Stewart also failed to beat the cut with a 147 tally.
George Murray, who had a 79 in the first round, retired. Whether that was before or during the second round, we don't know.

GALLACHER AND  DOAK TIED FOURTH

AT  HALFWAY IN SWEDEN

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Two eagles in a round of 67 helped Spaniard Alvaro Quiros move into a three-way share of the lead with Frenchman Victor Dubuisson and England’s Eddie Pepperell at the halfway mark of the Nordea Masters near Malmo, Sweden.
On a day dominated by the strong winds at PGA Sweden National, big-hitting Qurios eagled the par five 11th hole – his second after starting on the tenth tee – and also made a 3 on the par-5 first hole, added to birdies on the 15th and 18th holes, to move to six under par.
Dubuisson, who is returning from a shoulder injury, had earlier set the pace with a round of 69, while Pepperell recovered from a double bogey on the par-3 fourth hole with two birdies on the back nine, including the finishing hole, to retain a share of the lead.
World No 2 Henrik Stenson momentarily delighted the home fans when he moved to the top of the leaderboard on seven under par with consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th hole.
However, a bogey followed on the 16th and he then found the water on the 17th, which led to a double bogey five.
A birdie on the last hole meant the 2013 Race to Dubai champion signed for a round of 70, and on five under par he is only one shot back going into the weekend, in a share of fourth alongside compatriot Jens Dantorp (73), Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee (70), Welshman Bradley Dredge (70) and Scottish pair Stephen Gallacher (72) and Chris Doak (69).
Key player quotes
 Victor Dubuisson 69 (-6 total)
“It’s a great score. I played good today. It was more difficult than yesterday because the wind was in a different direction and it made some of the par fives difficult to make birdie on.
"My short game was good and that was important.”
Alvaro Quiros 67 (-6 total)
“I’ve been hitting the ball very well from tee to green, but even with the scores I’ve had I have not putted great. I had one putt from eight metres for eagle on 11, but apart from that I’ve had a lot of putts from around five or six metres and not holed any. So even though I’m happy I could putted better.”
Eddie Pepperell 72 (-6 total)
“It becomes fun when it is this tough as everyone else is finding it hard. It’s about hanging in there and not letting it get to you. I enjoy that type of golf. I’ve grown up playing amateur stuff in England on links in these sort of conditions, so I enjoy it.
"Today was a completely different day to yesterday. I felt I played just as well today, but six shots difference suggests the course was considerably tougher.”
 Henrik Stenson 70 (-5 total)
“It was as strong wind out there and it was really tough at times. I played better today than I did yesterday and of course I would have wished for a bit more.
"It wasn’t the finish that I was looking for, but the 16th is a tough hole and the 17th too, and I just let it go a bit too much to the left in the wind and it hit the side of the green and into the water, Then you are facing a tough shot in the drop zone in the cross-wind.
" I was hoping for an easier way to make four on the last. I had a nice drive and a good four iron which just hit the mound and ended up in the trap. I didn’t play the best bunker shot but it still gave me a putt and it was nice to make birdie and it looks pretty good now going into the weekend.”

FIVE SCOTS SURVIVE HALFWAY CUT ON PGA EUROPRO TOUR

TWO SALTMAN BROTHERS MAKE THE

CUT, ZACK MISSES IT BY TWO SHOTS

Saltman brothers Lloyd and Elliot are two of five Scots to survive the 36-hole cut in the PGA EuroPro Tour competition, the Kerry London Championship, over the south course at Surrey's Burhill Golf Club.
But the third Saltman sibling, Zack, the youngest, missed out by two shots.
Elliot Saltman (Archerfield Links) (72-69) and Dunbar's Neil Fenwick (72-69) are tied 10th on 141 but with only an outside chance of winning the £10,000 jackpot prize.  They are five shots behind the joint leaders on eight-under 136, England's Stiggy Hodgson (Wisley) (69-67) and Jack Senior (Heysham) (68-68).
Paul Doherty (Vale Hotel) (73-69), Ross Kellett (Kingsfield) (70-72) and overnight leader Tim Rice, an Irishman who won the Scottish youths title in 1998, are joint 22nd on 142.
Lloyd Saltman (Archerfield Links) made it with nothing to spare on the limit mark of 144 (71-73).
Ellon's Ross Cameron (73-72) and Aberdeen-born Callum Trahan (Gleneagles) (70-5) missed out by one shot.
Craig Lawrie (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) is getting closer to making the cut on the EuroPro Tour. He shot 76-71 for 147 but after birdies at the second, third, seventh, eight and 11th in his second round he was on schedule for a place in the third round.
Then he was hit by double bogeys at the 12th and 15th - hard to bear for a young rookie but all part of the learning process.

GREIG STAGES BIRDIE-BIRDIE FINISH TO MAKE UP FOR DOUBLE BOGEY

HUTCHEON WINS BY TWO AT LARGS

DESPITE DOUBLE BOGEY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
You can't keep a good man down, goes the old adage. And Greig Hutcheon bounced back from
comparative "adversity" late in his round to win the Fairbairn BMW?Largs Golf Club pro-am by two strokes today.
He was cruising along until he had a double bogey 6 at the 16th but responded in typical Hutch style by birdieing the 17th and 18th holes.
The Paul Lawrie Golf Centre player shot a four-under-par 66 which was highlighted by n eagle 3 at the long 12th and five birdies, at the short first, second, 15th and then the late ones at the 17th and 18th.
His only bogey came at the 10th.
It was Hutch's sixth top 10 finish in seven starts this season but only his second win after an initial success at Deeside Golf Club on May 15.
He won the £1,251 top prize by two strokes from three players: Jason McCreadie (Buchanan Castle), Robert Arnott (Bishopbriggs) and Scott Henderson (Kings Links).
On very quick greens, Hutcheon was not the only one of the leaders to have a double bogey. In fact McCreadie had two of them - at the seventh and the 15th. Arnott's double bogey came at the seventh.
McCreadie led the well-named team of Jason and the Argonauts to victory with a 13-under-par net score of 57. The amateurs were Graham Thom (handicap 10), Roy Coates (9) and Gordon Barraclough (12).

"I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING AT ROYAL ABERDEEN!

SIR NICK FALDO JOINS  STARS IN THE

SCOTTISH OPEN FIELD AT BALGOWNIE

EUROPEAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE

Sir Nick Faldo, the most successful British golfer in history, will return to the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open for the first time in five years when he takes his place in the world-class field at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, from July 10-13.
The six-time Major Champion, now spotted more often in the commentary box than on the fairways, will make a rare appearance on The European Tour the week before he plays in The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. Faldo’s best finish in the Scottish Open came in 1995 when he finished runner up to Australian Wayne Riley at Carnoustie, but the Englishman did win three Open Championships on Scottish soil – at Muirfield in 1987 and 1992, and St Andrews in 1990.
Those historic achievements in Scotland, the Home of Golf, should ensure he receives a warm reception from the galleries at Royal Aberdeen, when he joins a cast of fellow Major winners including Darren Clarke, Paul Lawrie, José María Olazábal, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson, the defending champion.
“I’m really looking forward to playing at Royal Aberdeen,” said the 56 year old
“The Scottish Open was always one of the leading tournaments on The European Tour in my playing days and I think you can see by strength of the field we have in July that it remains so.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing in Scotland and I am particularly looking forward to the test that Royal Aberdeen will present. I think it is important for me to play in a big event like this before heading to The Open.”
In addition to his three Claret Jugs, Faldo also won the Masters Tournament on three occasions, in 1989, 1990 and 1996. He won 30 European Tour titles in total and is the all-time leading points’ scorer in The Ryder Cup with 25 points from 11 appearances.
Faldo has largely moved away from his illustrious playing career in recent years to take up a successful career as lead analyst with CBS Sports and the Golf Channel.
Discounted tickets to see the host of world-class players in action at the 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open are now on sale. A season ticket can be purchased for £70 in advance of the tournament, a saving of £10 on admission at the gate.
Adult day tickets are currently priced at £30, rising to £35 on the gate. Concessions (60 and over) start at £50 for a season ticket and £20 for any one day tickets if purchased in advance.
Under-16s accompanied by an adult are admitted free of charge and all car parking is also free.
Entrance to the Pro-Am on Wednesday is £10 in advance and £15 on the day.
Full ticket information can be found at: www.aamscottishopen.com and www.europeantour.com/tickets or telephone Ticket Hotline: +44 (0) 800 023 2557.

BYRNE COMING HOME TO CHALLENGE NORTHERN OPEN RECORD

JAMES BYRNE COMING HOME IN BID

TO  EQUAL ERIC BROWN HAT-TRICK

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Thailand-based James Byrne from Banchory will bid to follow in the famous footsteps of Eric Brown as the only three-in-a-row winner of the Northern Open championship at Murcar Links next month.
"I have entered the Northern Open and I will be flying home to the North-east from Thailand next week," said Byrne, a former Walker Cup player and British amateur championship runner-up, whose stellar amateur form has not transferred with him to the professional ranks.
But he has played well enough to win the Northern Open at Meldrum House in 2012 and 2013. This year's 72-hole tournament, organised by the PGA in Scotland, will be hosted by Murcar Links Golf Club from June 17-19.
With sponsorship from the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, the Northern Open will have a £30,000 prize fund.
Ryder Cup man Eric Brown won the Northern Open five times - two fewer than his great rival, John Panton.
The "Brown Bomber" triumphed in 1950 (Lossiemouth), 1953 (Cruden Bay), 1954 (Royal Dornoch), 1955 (Murcar), and 1957 (Nairn).
Rather fitting that Brown's Northern Open hat-trick was completed at Murcar where Byrne will be attempting to claim a share of the three-in-a-row record.
Another link with Murcar Golf Club is that it was the venue in 1933 for the first Northern Open.

IN AUGUST OVER HAZLEHEAD'S TWO COURSES

QUAICH TOURNAMENT REVIVED AS

ABERDEEEN CITY CHAMPIONSHIP

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
The popular Quaich amateur golf tournament at Hazlehead - which has not been staged for three or four years, is being revived by Golf Aberdeen, part of Sport Aberdeen, which is launching a new programme of golf events over the city's municipal courses..
The Quaich tournament will be rebranded as the Aberdeen City Championship and it will be played over 36 holes, one round over both Hazelehad courses, on Saturday-Sunday, August 8 and 9.
It will be open to female amateurs, as well as men, as long as they have an official handicap from a club.
David Law, a former Hazlehead member who won the Quaich in 2007 and is now a tour professional, said:
"Having grown up playing at Hazlehead I'm delighted that Golf Aberdeen is introducing this prestigious title on such a great course. To become the Aberdeen City Champion would be an honour for any golfer."

Traditionally, the Quaich was a three-day tournament with two rounds of stroke-play on the Friday from which players qualified to play in either the scratch or handicap match-play over the Saturday and Sunday.
Also included in Golf Aberdeen's new calendar of golf events are three Texas Scrambles at municipal courses across the city:
·       July 6 – Hazlehead
·       August 31 – Balnagask
·       September 21 – Kings Links
There will also be a "walk-on" Stableford competition Tuesday, July 8 at Kings Links, giving golfers the opportunity to pitch up and play in this special event to help celebrate the Scottish Open coming to Aberdeen.
These events are open to any amateur golfer - male or female - who is a member of a golf club with a CONGU handicap

Ferrier birdied the first, 12th, 16th and 18th on his way to a fouor-under-par 68.
Aberdeen-born Paul Cormack is joint 30th on 70 after starting his round with an eagle 3 at the par-5 first. He also birdied the third and short 13th but bogeys at the ninth and 16th dropped him out of the top 15 to 20.

MAGNIFICENT GESTURE BY LIFE MEMBER OF THE CLUB

Bobby McClymont (Club Treasurer) accepts the gift of a defibrillator from Ros Dunsmuir, a life   member at Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club.

ROS DUNSMUIR DONATES DEFIBRILLATOR

TO NEWBURGH-ON-YTHAN GOLF CLUB

NEWS RELEASE FROM NEWBURGH-ON-YTHAN GOLF CLUB
In August 2013, former Ryder Cup captain, Bernard Gallacher collapsed during a dinner at The Marcliffe Hotel on the outskirts of Aberdeen. This was due to a sudden cardiac arrest.

Fortunately, the hotel had a defibrillator which was used by the hotel staff to administer early life-saving shocks. This, together with the other medical assistance that he received, enabled Bernard to make a full recovery.
Following his experience, the Bernard Gallacher Defibrillator Campaign was launched in association with the support of the Professional Golfers’ Association and the Arrhythmia Alliance with the aim of having a defibrillator in every UK golf club by the end of 2014

Sudden cardiac arrests cause 100,000 deaths a year in the UK. This figure is higher than the combined deaths due to lung cancer, breast cancer and AIDs. Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) only saves the lives of 5% of those who suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. CPR when used alongside an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) massively increases the survival rate from 5% to 50%.
This highlights the reason why golf clubs are being encouraged to have a defibrillator available as the chance of survival when combined with CPR treatment is so much higher.
In April, the Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club Monthly Newsletter carried an article about Gallacher’s sudden cardiac arrest and how his treatment with a defibrillator had contributed to his subsequent recovery.

Robbie Stewart, Newburgh-on-Ythan's  new PGA professional, recommended that the club should get a defibrillator. The Newsletter went on to say that the golf club committee were exploring  ways to fund the purchase of an automated external defibrillator for the club and which would also be available for the local community.
On the day that the Newsletter was published, two golf club members came forward with amazing offers to donate sufficient funds to enable the club to purchase a defibrillator immediately.

The first offer which was accepted was made by Rosaleen (Ros) Dunsmuir, a life-member of Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club.
As a retired lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Robert Gordon University, Ros said “I am very happy to make a positive contribution to the club and to the local community and I hope that the defibrillator will  never need to be used."
Ros handed over the AED to Bobby McClymont, the club’s treasurer and seniors convener, who accepted it on behalf of Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club.
Bobby said “This is a fantastic gift from Ros which is greatly appreciated as a vital, potentially life-saving instrument which the club is delighted to receive. We cannot thank Ros enough for her generosity and like Ros we hope that it will never be needed”.
