Dantorp, Pepperell clickety-click to
set the pace in Sweden
REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Home favourite Jens Dantorp and Englishman Eddie Pepperell share the lead on six under par 66 after the opening round of the Nordea Masters in Sweden.
Malmo-born Dantorp posted six birdies in a blemish-free round at PGA Sweden National, cheered on by a large group of supporters at his home club.
He was joined at the top of the leaderboard by Pepperell who birdied three of his last four holes, having started on the tenth tee.
The pair are one shot clear of Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher, Dutchman Daan Huizing, Swedish pair Rikard Karlberg and Sebatsian Soderberg, and Northern Ireland’s Gareth Maybin.
World Number Two Henrik Stenson opened with a three under par round of 69 to lie three shots off the pace in a share of 14th position, alongside Swedish Ryder Cup player Peter Hanson.
Key player quotes
Jens Dantorp (-6)
“I can’t really explain how good the support I got today was. All my friends, all my buddies, were here and there was so much applause. That was one of the biggest keys to my success today. It definitely helped me.”
Eddie Pepperell (-6)
“I’m very pleased with that opening round. It was fairly windy out there so 66 is a good score. I played well today and I hit the ball better, which is the main thing for me. I’ve not been hitting the ball that well over the last couple of weeks, despite some good results. There has been some wild stuff in there so I felt I needed to get a grip of things and I did that today. I kept up the good habits I had last week – the short game was pretty good and I putted well, so it’s a solid round.”
Stephen Gallacher (-5)
“I’m delighted with that. It wasn’t a vintage striking day, but I rolled the ball really well. Probably as good as I’ve rolled it for a while. I’ve done some work with Dave Stockton in America and I’ve been putting better this year, which helps.”
Gareth Maybin (-5)
“I hope things are coming together for me. I missed a few bad shots today but I won’t worry too much. The score is all that matters. I think things are better than they were, so that’s a good sign. We’re into the summer now and in Europe, so that’s when the season really gets going.”
Henrik Stenson (-3)
“It was a sloppy round. I felt I left a lot of shots out there. The course was playing pretty easy so I should’ve been a lot better. I got off to a good start, the made a few mistakes then got it going again and then slipped up and then finished pretty strong, apart from the ninth there. I’ll take three under, but I’m not happy with how I played.”
