ABERDEEN LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP - SECOND ROUND

GREIG BEATS DEFENDING CHAMPION

EDMOND IN 19-HOLE THRILLER

Bon Accord's Matty Greig dethroned his clubmate and good friend, Barrie Edmond, as the title-holder in the second round of the Aberdeen Links golf championship match-play stages at the Kings Links this evening.
Greig, beaten in last year's final by Edmond (pictured above) who had been champion in three of the past four years, had a narrow lead until Edmond won the 16th to square the match.
Greig was not to be denied. He won at the 19th to claim a place in Friday's quarter-finals. Matty had played his golfing pal in each of the last three championships.
This was the first time he has tasted success.
Leading qualifier Barry Reid (Caledonian), the 2011 champion, is also through to the round of the last eight. He beat the 2010 title-winner, George Paterson (Northern) by 5 and 4.

ISPS HANDA PGA SENIORS CHAMPION AT STOKE by NAYLAND NEXT WEEK

KEN HUTTON LOOKING FORWARD TO

TAKING ON SENIOR BIG NAMES

 PGA NEWS RELEASE
Muir of Ord-born Ken Hutton is relishing the chance of taking on some of golf’s biggest names at next week’s ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship at Stoke by Nayland from June 5-8.
The Downfield-based pro, who now has more of a consultancy role at the Dundee golf club,  goes into the £235,000 tournament buoyed by his magnificent victory in the Senior PGA Professional Championship at the Foxhills Resort in Surrey two weeks ago.
And Hutton, the Scottish PGA captain, believes that victory has given him a timely confidence boost as he goes head to head with a host of Ryder Cup stars including Sam Torrance, Des Smyth and Mark James.
“I went to European Senior Tour qualifying school in January and while I got to the last day, I never really threatened,” he said.
“The last month, however, I’ve been starting to feel a bit more relaxed and haven’t been putting so much pressure on myself.
“I’m looking forward to competing against all the guys at Stoke by Nayland. I was never in a position to have a go at tour school or anything like that as I went down the club pro route. But I’ve always had my eye on the Seniors and I feel my game has matured well over the years.
“The win at Foxhills was massive and I feel I can compete if I bring my A-game.”
Among the first people to congratulate Hutton was former PGA Seniors champion D J Russell while fellow Scots Fraser Mann, Kevin Phillips (Winterfield Golf Club) and Morayshire-born Albert MacKenzie from Devon club Saunton are also in the field having qualified through a top 20 finish at Foxhills.
It will be a case of ‘friends reunited’ for Mann, who is a teaching pro at Open Championship venue Carnoustie. The 54-year-old is a PGA Cup team-mate of defending champion Paul Wesselingh with the pair part of the historic Great Britain and Ireland triumph against the United States in 2005 to end a 21-year winless streak.
Andrew Oldcorn, who won the PGA Seniors title by nine shots in 2011 is also in action while Wesselingh, the reigning European Senior Tour No.1, is seeking a third straight triumph in the event which returns to Stoke by Nayland for a third time having previously hosted it in 2006 and 2007 when Sam Torrance and Carl Mason won respectively.
Previous champions include Open Championship winners Max Faulkner, Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson, while Christy O'Connor lifted the PGA Seniors trophy no fewer than six times.

GERMAN BEATS AUSTRIAN AMATEUR AT SECOND HOLE OF PLAY-OFF

PATTERSON AND McLEAN NOT IN THE

HUNT IN ONE-ROUND AUSTRIAN EVENT
FROM THE GERMAN PGA EPD TOUR WEBSITE
Adamstal/AustriaGerman Alexander Knappe from Paderborn is the winner of the 2014 Adamstal Open at Adamstal Golf Club, Austria.
He prevailed in a play-off against Austrian amateur Sebastian Wittmann after they had tied with 65s, five under par and two strokes clear of the field.
On the second extra hole, the par-3 18th, Knappe got a birdie 2 to win the trophy, 5,000 euros and 5,000pts for the Pro Golf Tour Order of Merit.
The tournament had to be reduced from 54 holes to one round after a blunder by the greenkeeping staff in making changes to the course while play was in progress, forcing the organisers to declare the opening day's play null and void.
Then thunderstorms and prolonged heavy rain meant that only a handful of players were able to complete 18 holes on Tuesday.
For Knappe it is his second win this season as he was successful already at the Sueno Dunes Classic in January in Turkey where he also won after a play-off.
Only two Scots were left in the field after Connor O'Neil (Pollok) flew home early because of a back injury.
Michael Patterson (Kilmacolm) finished T51 with a 75 while  Philip McLean (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) returned an 83 (41-42) for a share of 112th place.

ASIAN DEVELOPMENTAL TOUR EVENT IN PHILIPPINES

JACKSON AND FLOREN SET PACE IN

RIVIERA CLASSIC AT MANILA

Manila: Sweden’s Nils Floren and England’s Grant Jackson set the early pace by taking the first round lead with matching three-under-par 68s at the inaugural US$60,000 ICTSI Riviera Classic on Wednesday.
Malaysia’s Arie Irawan also got off to an encouraging start with a 69 to grab a share of third place with Philippines’ Michael Bibat, Albin Engino, Robert Pactolerin and Elmer Salvador at the Asian Development Tour (ADT) event which is the first of the two stops in the Philippines.
Singapore-based James Byrne from Banchory had a disappointing, four-over-par 75 which included a triple bogey 7 at the 11th and birdies at the long 10th, 13th and long 16th.
It was indeed a welcome return to form for Floren who earned his Asian Tour card at Qualifying School in 2012 but failed to retain his playing rights for the subsequent seasons.
“I’m very proud of my performance today as I managed to stay focused and achieved what I wanted to do. I kept strictly to my routine and processes and I handled myself pretty well,” said Floren.
Having lost his playing rights on the region’s premier Tour, the Swede decided to switch his attention to the ADT where he has since achieved a small measure of success.
His best result came in Malaysia where he finished third in Langkawi last year and although he is still searching for his first professional victory, Floren believes his breakthrough will come if his opening round performance was anything to go by.
“It’s good to be playing well and I’m hopeful of my chances this week. It’s going to be a long season ahead and my target is to finish top-five at the end of the season,” added the Swede
This season, the ADT will reward the top five players on the final Order of Merit with playing rights for the 2015 Asian Tour season.
Like Floren who missed out on his Asian Tour card at Qualifying School in 2013 and 2014, Arie admits he is still at that progressive stage in his career where he needs to hone his game before he can savour success.
“It is an encouraging start but I would like to say it’s still work in progress. I’m still learning and grabbing whatever opportunities that come my way,” said the 23-year-old, who turned professional in April last year.
While it is still early days at the ICTSI Riviera Classic, the 2008 Malaysian Amateur Stroke Play Champion hopes he can continue to stay focused on the task ahead.
“Mentally, I was very focused today. You’re better off having a stronger mental game than hitting a bad shot. I’m glad I was able to do that well today and hopefully I can maintain this consistency,” said Arie, who has already enjoyed two top-10s on the ADT this season.
Three players have yet to complete their opening round which was suspended due to fading light.
The ICTSI Riviera Classic is the sixth stop on the burgeoning ADT circuit, inaugurated as a gateway to the Asian Tour in 2010.
