Guillaume Cambis soared into the lead after day one of the Turkish Airlines Challenge, just days after gathering extensive knowledge on the course at National Golf Club while caddying for his friend at a Ladies European Tour event held at the same venue. The 25-year-old Frenchman decided to travel to Turkey earlier than usual before Jade Schaeffer, girlfriend of European Tour player François Calmels, requested his assistance in carrying the bag in the final day of last week's Turkish Airlines Ladies Open. Cambis made full use of that little piece of investigative work as he negotiated his way around the challenging lay-out in four under par, carding a 68 to move one shot clear of Englishmen Matt Ford and Chris Paisley and Sweden’s Michael Jonzon. SCOTSWATCH by COLIN FARQUHARSON Of the eight Scots in the field, the odds against Wallace Booth leading the Tartan Army at the end of the first day would have been long, bearing in mind the Comrie man's injury problems. But Booth it is who is in joint 10th place overnight with a one-under-par round of 71, only three off the lead. Grantown-on-Spey's Duncan Stewart, a mate of Russell Knox when they were the Jacksonville University golf team stars, has tended to be erratic this season but today's performance was more like the player who won twice on the EuroPro tour/ Stewart shot a 73, one better than Raymond Russell and Andrew McArthur. Chris Kelly, always looking for a challenge, is borderline for beating the cut after a 76 so where does that leave Calum Macaulay (78), George Murray (79) and David Law (80)? Case Study:

Emma Emma Morrison came to  us with a standard Ladies  13 degree driver. After an hour driver fitting session using Trackman, Emma left hitting the ball 28 yards longer through the air and 38 yards in total. As seen in the screenshot the TaylorMade Jetspeed fitted with a Accra MT M3 50 gram shaft, produced a far straighter shot on average (side total). More importantly Emma is seeing real results on the golf course, commenting that the longer straighter ball flight is giving her more opportunities on the longer holes.

Downfield's Ken Hutton, in second place, three shots behind English leader Philip Gresswell, led the Scottish qualifiers for the final round of the Senior PGA professional championship at Foxhills Golf Resort, Surrey.
Hutton, originally from Muir of Ord, north of Inverness, tagged a 73 on to his opening 70 to be on two-under 143 after 36 holes.
Next best Scots in joint fifth place on 145 are two from English clubs, Albert Mackenzie (Saunton) (71-74) and Frank Kiddie (Barlaston) (72-73) alongside overnight leader, Englishman Gary Marks (70-75)
Other Scots who beat the cut at 153 included Fraser Mann (Carnoustie), joint 19th on 149 (75-74), Stephen Craig (76-75) and Stephen McAllister (79-72), joint 29th on 151 and Martin Gray (80-72), tied 36th on 152.
Scots who did not make it were Edzell's Alastair Webster whose 79-75 for 154 added up to one shot too many.
Bill Lockie (76-80) missed out on 156 and, surprisingly considering the form he has been in, Robert Arnott shot 80-77 for 157.

WHITE'S GRANDSTAND FINISH PUTS

HIM IN JT SIXTH ON ALPS TOUR

Rookie pro James White birdied his last two holes - the eighth and the ninth - for a three-under-par 68 and a share of sixth place at the end of the first round of the Alps Tour event at Colli Berici Golf Club in Northern Italy today.

White, pictured, from Lundin, Fife started at the 10th and birdied the 10th and 13th before dropping his only shot of the day, a 4 at the short 16th. 
He reeled off a string of pars after the turn and then produced a grandstand birdie-birdie finish which leaves him two shots behind the three joint leaders on five-under 66, Italians Joon Kim and Alessio Bruschi and Ireland's Brendan McCarroll.
John Henry and John Gallagher are tied for 36th place on 73, one shot ahead of Ross Kellett.
Michael Stewart continues to struggle as a pro. He is lying joint 118th in a field of 138 after a lacklustre, eight-over-par 79.

Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) spreadeagled the field with a superb round of seven-under-par 63 at Deeside Golf Club today to win the first pro prize of £1,241 by three strokes at  the VSA Tartan pro-am.
There was no indication of what was to come when he bogeyed the par-3 opening hole. But then Hutch birdied the second, long third and fourth, got an eagle 3 at the long sixth and still reached the turn in three-under 33 despite a second bogey at the seventh.
Greig cruised home in a flawless four-under 30, raising his total of birdies to seven with sub-par figures at the short 12th, long 13th, 15th and 17th.
Said Hutcheon later:
"The putter worked well, but generally I kept the ball in play, except driving it in two fairway bunkers, at the seventh which cost me a bogey at the 11th where I managed to salvage a par.
"We played from the white tees. Obviously Deeside is a stiffer test from the gold tees. But still really pleased with a great score. 
"We will see how good my golf really is next week when I will be playing in the BMW PGA Championship as nowhere to hide around Wentworth,  probably the toughest inland course in the country,"
 Scott Henderson (Kings Links Golf Centre) and Craig Ronald (Carluke) shared second place on 66. Henderson had a double bogey 6 at the second hole but he covered the remaining 16 holes in six under par. Both men earned £869.
Strangely enough, Hutcheon's team did not win the team event nor finish in the first three for that matter.
Iain Donaldson (Meldrum House) with the NYOP amateur trio led the way with a best ball net score of 123. Iain's amateur partners were Gordon Edwards (handicap 17), Mike Milne (14) and Ross Sangster (14).

SUPER SIDDIKUR TIES WITH KIM AT 

THE ICTSI PHILIPPINE OPEN

 

Manila: Siddikur Rahman fired his best score at the challenging Wack Wack Golf and Country Club to share the opening round lead with Chan Kim on six-under-par 66 at the ICTSI Philippine Open today.

Siddikur, the first Bangladeshi to play and win on the Asian Tour, birdied the last hole from five feet to cap his best effort on the Wack Wack course where his previous low round was a 71 at the 2011 Philippine Open.

Little known Rolando Marabe, a former caddy who turned professional in 1997, led the local charge after shooting a 69 to tie with four-time Asian Tour winner Chawalit Plaphol in third place.

EurAsia Cup star Prayad Marksaeng, Korea’s Park Byung-joo, Michael Tran of Vietnam, Settee Prakongvech of Thailand and Australia’s Marcus Both were a further four shots off the leaders in joint fifth.

Siddikur, who was part of Team Asia who tied with Team Europe in the inaugural EurAsia Cup earlier this year, was delighted to rediscover his deft putting touch as he negotiated the tricky Wack Wack greens in 26 putts.

It was a welcome return to form for the popular Bangladeshi, who uncharacteristically missed the cut in his last two Asian Tour events.

“I was confident that my putting touch will come back. In golf sometimes you enjoy a good run of form and sometimes you don’t. I sank about 80% of my putts which reflected in my score on this golf course,” said the 29-year-old.

“This is not an easy course. It is a tight and narrow course with small greens. Every shot counts here. I was not disappointed with my form before today because my stats were still good except putting,” added Siddikur, a two-time Asian Tour winner.

Newly-crowned Irish open amateur stroke-play champion Jamie Savage (pictured) hopes to continue his form by helping Glasgow to a first GolfKings Scottish area team championship success in over 20 years this weekend. 

The 19-year-old is on a high after winning the biggest event of his amateur career at the Royal Dublin club on Sunday, seeing off a strong international field to claim the 72-hole stroke-play title.

SGU National Squad player Savage, the first Scot to win a premier stroke play event on the GB and I circuit for five years, has quickly turned his attentions to team golf for the three-day competition over two Renfrewshire courses from tomorrow, Ranfurly Castle andOld Course Ranfurly. 

The leading amateur team championship in Scotland, contested by the 16 area associations of the Scottish Golf Union, see six-player sides compete in a stroke-play qualifying format with the leading teams qualifying for the match-play final stages.

Glasgow last won the event in 1991 at Elgin and Savage, together with the likes of former Scottish Amateur champion Barry Hume and Boys international George Burns, is hoping for more success as they seek to take the crown from defending champions Fife. 

“We will see how we go this weekend, we hope to do well,” said the Cawder player. “We lost in the semi-finals to Fife last year and I think it’s pretty open this year, there is not really a favourite. Fife, though, have done well in the event of late, winning two of the last three.”

On his Irish win, where Savage finished level par for a two-shot win, he added: “I just managed to grind it out. I had a game plan at the start of the week, having played the course last year, and just stuck to it. I played really well and was in no trouble. 

“It means a lot to me, and it’s a good feeling knowing all the practice and hard work over the winter away with the SGU squad and the support team in the UAE and South Africa has paid off. The support has helped a lot.”

Fife, who beat Lothians 3.5–1.5 in the weather-delayed final at Crail12 months ago, name a much-changed line-up for 2014, with Scottish boys championship finalist Ben Kinsley among their number. 

Lothians, area champions a record 13 times since the tournament was inaugurated in 1977, have picked in-form US-based college pair Calum Hill and Greg Smail in their line-up, with reigning Scottish amateur champion Alexander Culverwell a late withdrawal due to injury and Anthony Blaney coming in.

Home hopes rest with the likes of Matt Clark, recently back from playing in the inaugural Concession Cup in America, while Scott Borrowman, who successfully defended the Scottish Champion of Champions crown last month, and Robert MacIntyre, twice a national winner in 2013, will hope to shine for Clackmannanshire and Argyll and Bute respectively. 

Stirlingshire, who reached the semi-finals last year, will rely on the experience of Graeme Robertson while Dumbartonshire have the youth of Ewen Ferguson, the British and Scottish boys champion.

The 2013 Race to Dubai winner Henrik Stenson and his fellow Swede Jonas Blixt are the latest star players to add their names to an already stellar field for the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club's Balgownie links from July 10-13. 
Last year, Stenson became the first man to win both The Race to Dubai and the US PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Series in the same season, and arguably his tied third finish behind winner Phil Mickelson in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open heralded the start of a purple patch of form which culminated in the Swede winning the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai and, with it, the Harry Vardon Trophy. Stenson established a two-stroke lead entering the final day at Castle Stuart Golf Links last July, only to fall two shots shy of victory after a closing round of 73. 
But the disappointment of his near-miss proved the catalyst for a sensational run of form which yielded top three finishes over the next four weeks in The 142nd Open Championship, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the US PGA Championship. Stenson’s joint third finish at Castle Stuart was his second top ten in succession – he tied for eighth place in 2012 – and the World No 3 will be keen to continue that impressive recent record in the 32nd edition of the £3 million event.
 In-form Swede Jonas Blixt will be making his debut in the tournament as he seeks to play his way into Europe’s Ryder Cup team. 
Blixt, currently fifth in The Race to Dubai thanks chiefly to his tied runner-up finish in the Masters Tournament, is bidding to become the first Swede since Johan Edfors in 2006 to lift the Scottish Open trophy. 
Other leading contenders from Continental Europe include Thomas Björn, the current leader of The Race to Dubai, and Victor Dubuisson, the Frenchman who, like Björn, has all but guaranteed himself a Ryder Cup debut at the Gleneagles Hotel in September with a series of scintillating performances. 
Björn captured his maiden European Tour title at Loch Lomond in 1996, when he beat Jean van de Velde by a single stroke, and the Dane came close to repeating the feat in the 2001 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, finishing runner-up behind Retief Goosen. 
In contrast, Dubuisson will be keen to improve on a relatively moderate record in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, with a tied 17th finish last year his best performance in three appearances in the tournament. 
Former champions Jeev Milkha Singh of India (2012) and Italian Edoardo Molinari (2010) will have their sights set on a second victory, while the latter's younger brother Francesco will need a strong second half of the season if he is to secure his third successive Ryder Cup berth. 
The same applies to Nicolas Colsaerts, one of the stars of The 2012 Ryder Cup who signalled a recent return to form with a tied runner-up finish in the Maybank Malaysia Open. 
José María Olazábal, the man who masterminded the so-called ‘Miracle at Medinah’, is also in the field along with Paul McGinley, the man who replaced him as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain. 
The quality line-up will also be enhanced with the inclusion of Australian Matt Jones, the winner of last month’s Shell Houston Open on the US PGA Tour who will be making his debut in a regular European Tour event.

LIVE SCORING -  CLICK HERE PREVIEW FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS Garrick Porteous, a former star of the amateur game and the current British Amateur Champion, makes his professional European Challenge Tour debut this week at the Turkish Airlines Challenge, and the Englishman is hoping to make his name on Europe's second tier en route to the top. The 24 year old from the North-east of England joined a prestigious list of Amateur Championship winners, which includes José María Olazábal, Sergio Garcia and Matteo Manassero, last year when he defeated Finn Toni Hakula in the final at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club. That victory earned him a place in three of the four Majors but after enjoying the experience of The 2013 Open Championship and the 2014 Masters Tournament, the Newcastle native decided to forfeit the chance of playing this year's US Open Championship and turn professional. Porteous travelled straight from Augusta to make his pro debut at the Maybank Malaysian Open last month and also appeared at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI last week. This week, he plays his first Challenge Tour event as a professional at the stunning National Golf Club in Belek. “I know a lot of the players on the Challenge Tour from amateur golf so it will be good fun,” said the former Walker Cup player, who has played two events on Europe’s second tier as an amateur.  “It’s been a bit of a roller-coaster ride since turning professional. “I played in Malaysia, Indonesia and then Madeira last week but it’s been a good experience so far. Obviously the golf doesn't change much, but it’s the travel that I have to get used to. I went straight from Atlanta to Kuala Lumpur after the Masters so that was a bit of a trek but you have to get used to it. “I'm just taking it all in, playing with all these different guys, and it’s just been fun. It makes it easier knowing so many people around this tour, because they’re all going through the same thing. We’re all trying to get on The European Tour.” While Porteous has played in the Belek region of Turkey before, he has never played the tight and challenging lay-out presented for the Challenge Tour players this week at National Golf Club and he has been very impressed by the David Feherty and David Jones-designed course. “It’s definitely a ball-striker’s course,” he said. “It’s a lot tighter than Madeira and a bit more receptive. The greens seem to be rolling good too and the accommodation is pretty spot on so I'm really looking forward to it." While Porteous has experienced some of the biggest tournaments in the world in the last 12 months, he believes a full season on the Challenge Tour would be a perfect learning curve at the beginning of his professional career and he is hoping he can pick up some big results in order to force his way up the Rankings. “It’s definitely a good step-ladder,” he said. “It’s a good building block for getting onto The European Tour. I think it would definitely benefit me to get a full season on here.”

Back in 2004, Scot Russell Knox was playing competitively for Jacksonville University when he made it out to watch The Players Championship.
“I was watching, hoping, dreaming that one day I’d be inside the ropes,” Knox said.
His dream came true when he made his debut at the Stadium Course last week in front of a healthy number of friends and former college team-mates. Knox, 28, closed with a 68 to finish tied for 34th, the latest in a string of positive performances for the unheralded kid from Inverness.
He has made the cut in 13 of 16 starts, piled up $1,189,471, and from 245th at the end of 2013, Knox has moved to 97th in the world rankings.
