KPMG PUBLISH GOLF COURSE DEVELOPMENT COST SURVEY

SIX MILLION EUROS AVERAGE COST OF

A NEW QUALITY GOLF COURSE

Today KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice publishes the third edition of the Golf Course Development Cost Survey at the annual HSBC Golf Business Forum.
The report, which provides invaluable benchmark figures for developers and investors in the golf industry, was welcomed by key golf business professionals who debated the research findings during an engaging panel discussion.
In this major research initiative, KPMG collected information from owners and developers of over 100 recently constructed golf facilities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMA) covering the planning and construction costs of their projects. Furthermore, KPMG asked respondents about issues and challenges they have faced during the development process.
Based on KPMG’s findings, developing a new 18-hole golf course in the EMA region cost close to 6 million Euros on average in the last 5-6 year period. This is a 31% increase compared to the 2008 survey findings.
It must also be highlighted that the majority of the recent developments are of higher quality than in previous years, which is reflected by the increased average costs.
The value that a quality golf course can add to nearby or adjoining real estate developments or tourist destinations is widely recognized. According to 46% of the survey respondents, the resulting real estate price premium is likely to surpass 20%.
KPMG’s survey reveals that obtaining the necessary permits has been the biggest challenge for developers in recent years, indicated by 35% of the respondents.
A quarter of the respondents had difficulties obtaining financing and a quarter had had trouble staying within their original budget.
Andrea Sartori, head of KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice in EMA, said:
“After a few very tough years following the global credit crunch and the wider unfolding of the economic downturn in 2008, it is good to see stronger activity in today’s lifestyle real estate market and a revival of golf projects, with some prominent transactions taking place in various parts of the world.
"We have managed to identify more than 400 active golf projects in the EMA region since early 2008, including new developments as well as full renovations or extensions of existing facilities.”
In order to compliment the findings of the survey, KPMG also approached 40 golf architects for their opinion on development hot spots and market trends.
According to the architects, emerging golfing regions such as China, India, Russia and CIS, South America and the Caribbean and South-East Asia provide the biggest opportunities for golf development.
Nevertheless, the United Arab Emirates and Eastern Europe were also mentioned among the development hot spots, although they were considered slightly less attractive than in the previous surveys.
Andrea Sartori added: “I would like to thank all golf course developers, owners, operators and architects who participated in our research for their valuable input. I would also like to express my gratitude to Nicklaus Design, Troon Golf and Syngenta, who have supported this research.”
Together with other industry research materials, KPMG’s ‘Golf Course Development Cost Survey’ is available for download on www.golfbenchmark.com.

EAGLE ORCHID SCOTTISH MASTERS RESUMES 6.30am WEDNESDAY

MISTY MONTROSE LINKS FIRST DAY
SUSPENSION WITH ELLIOT 4 UNDER!
The Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters PGA EuroPro Tour event, scheduled for 54 holes at Montrose Links, hardly got out of the starting blocks
today (Tuesday).
Fog rolling in from the North Sea forced an early suspension of play and the haar never lifted sufficiently for play to resume.
No players have completed 18 holes and a 6.30am start is scheduled for Wednesday in an effort to make up lost time. The odds are still on the tournament and its first prize of £10,000
being decided over two rounds - and that's if the fog lifts.
Elliot Saltman (Archerfield Links) is the leader in the clubhouse at four under par and he played only six holes. He birdied the first, second, fifth and sixth.

TV GOLF ANALYST HAD BLOCKED CORONARY ARTERY

NOTAH BEGAY RECOVERING FROM

HEART ATTACK
NEWS RELEASE
ORLANDO, Florida — Notah Begay suffered a heart attack last week in Dallas but is expected to make a full recovery, Golf Channel said Tuesday.
Begay, a 41-year-old analyst for Golf Channel and NBC Sports, was taken Thursday to Methodist Hospital in Dallas where a stent was inserted to unblock his right coronary artery.
Begay, a Navajo from New Mexico, has a history of heart disease in the family.
Golf Channel said Begay will be off the air indefinitely while he recovers.
Begay, who won the last of his four PGA Tour titles in 2000, said he was grateful to Dr. Mark Jenkins and the speedy care he received in Dallas.
“I anticipate a full recovery and feel lucky to be at home resting with my family,” Begay said in a statement. “I appreciate the outpouring of well wishes I’ve received from family, friends and fans, and I will be back covering golf once I’m fully recovered.”
Begay is in his second full year as a TV analyst.
Begay was part of the Stanford team that won the NCAA title in 1994. A year later, he and Tiger Woods were the first minorities named to the Walker Cup team. Begay won twice on the PGA Tour in 1999 and 2000, but he was hampered by back injuries later in his career.

P AND H CHAMPIONSHIP DAY 2 AT DUNDONALD LINKS

ARNOTT, FOX, GAUGHAN  SHARE

DUNDONALD LINKS LEAD

Robert Arnott (Bishopbriggs), Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) and Louis Gaughan (Bathgate)  share the clubhouse lead on six-under-par 138 with one round to play in the P and H 54-hole championship at Dundonald Links, Gailes in Ayrshire.
Arnott has had a couple of 69s, Fox 68-70 and young trainee Gaughan a pair of 69s.Overnight joint leaders Paul O'Hara (Clydeway Golf) and Christopher Currie (Caldwell) both slumped to second-round 76s.
Arnott birdied the first, 12th, 13th and short 15th in halves of 36-33. His only bogey came at the second.
Fox should have been several shots clear of the field but he has a costly finish - a bogey at the 17th and a double bogey 7 at the long 18th.
Earlier he had surged to five under par on the day with birdies at the seventh, ninth, 12th, long 14th and 16th. Halves of 34-36 for a 70 that looked like being a 66 or a 67/68.
Gaughan had six birdies and three bogeys in his repeat 69. He birdied the long third, the short sixth, ninth, 10th, long 14th and long 18th. He shed shots to par at the first, short fourth and 16th in halves of 35-34
Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre got his "catastrophe" in early - a double bogey 7 at the long third followed by a 4 at the short fourth.
Then normal service was resumed with birdies at the long fifth, short 11t and 16th in halves of 38 and 34 for a 72 which puts him on 142.
Alistair Brown (Archerfield Links) is a not-so-well known name up with the leaders: 70 and 69 for 139.
He had seven birdies, including four in a row from the ninth to the 12th. But he also had a double bogey 6 at the 13th and bogeys at the third and sixth.
There were three categories decided over the first 36 holes, the winners of each to received £1,300.
Joint overall leader Arnott has already collected £1,300 as winner of the Senior Category. Andrew Oldcoat was runner-up for which he received £900.
Gaughan topped the Trainee Section to win the £1,300 top prize ahead of Keir McNicoll (Gullane).
Paul Wardell (Whitekirk) earned the £1,300 top award in the club pro section.
A total of 42 players with 36-hole aggregates of 148 and better qualified for Wednesday's final round. Surprise non-qualifiers were Tartan Tour stalwards Jason McCreadie and Stephen Gray, both on 149, and Scott Henderson (151)

RUSSELL KNOX: Stayed on in America after four years at Jacksonville University. Picture by courtesy of Getty Images

KNOX COMING HOME TO PLAY AT ROYAL ABERDEEN

After impressing on American soil so far in 2014, Inverness-born Russell Knox will showcase his emerging talent in front of a home crowd for the first time as a professional when he joins the star-studded field for the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.
The 28-year-old from Inverness has been invited to play at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, from July 10-13, where he will take his place alongside some of the game’s leading players, including defending champion Phil Mickelson and former World Number Ones Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood.
Knox, who has been based in Florida since studying business management at Jacksonville University, has posted three top ten finishes on the US PGA Tour this season, including losing in a four-man play-off to Russell Henley in the Honda Classic at the start of March, and is currently 25th on the PGA Tour’s FedEx Rankings.
He has earned more than $1million in prize money in 2014 and has broken into the top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time, making him the second highest ranked Scot after Stephen Gallacher.
While Knox’s parents are now also based at Jacksonville Beach, Florida, his sister Diane Campbell is a well-known radio DJ in Glasgow on Clyde 1, and he is hoping for some local support when he tees it up at Royal Aberdeen.
“Playing in the Scottish Open will be the highlight of my year,” said Knox, who won the 2011 Chiquita Classic on the Web.com Tour and shot a 59 in last year’s Albertsons Boise Open. “I would’ve loved to have played at Castle Stuart, given my Inverness roots, but unfortunately I was unable to as I was trying to keep my card in America, so it will be great to finally get the chance to play on home soil.
“Hopefully I will have some support at Royal Aberdeen and hopefully I can put on a good performance for the Scottish golf fans.
“It’s been a very good year for me so far and I feel my game can keep on improving. The field for the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open is obviously very strong, and I’m really looking forward to competing against some of the world’s top players on home soil.”
Discounted tickets to see the host of world-class players in action at the 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open are now on sale.
A season ticket can be purchased for £70 in advance of the tournament, a saving of £10 on admission at the gate.
Adult day tickets are currently priced at £30, rising to £35 on the gate.
Concessions (60 and over) start at £50 for a season ticket and £20 for any one day tickets if purchased in advance. Under-16s accompanied by an adult are admitted free of charge and all car parking is also free. Entrance to the Pro-Am on Wednesday is £10 in advance and £15 on the day.

FOTA ISLAND RESORT, CORK IS VENUE

JOHN DALY AND IRISH HOME GUARD

ON DUTY AT IRISH OPEN IN JUNE

FROM European Tour Communications
John Daly Major winners Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke along with European Ryder Cup captain, Paul McGinley, will form part of an elite home challenge when the Irish Open returns to Fota Island Resort from June 19-22. Ireland’s roll-call of Major winners will be joined by one of golf’s most colourful characters, the USA’s John Daly, who has also confirmed his participation in this year’s tournament.
Since Harrington followed up his 2007 Irish Open victory with an Open Championship triumph two month’s later, Irish golfers have excelled on the international stage.
The stars of Irish golf have combined to win an extraordinary seven Majors in just seven years and continue to be the star attractions each year at their national tournament.
Add in former Irish Open champion Shane Lowry and European Tour winners Michel Hoey, Peter Lawrie and Damien McGrane, and it’s a 2014 Open that a partisan home crowd will not want to miss. Current World Number 11, McIlroy said:
“I’ve never been to Fota – in fact, I’ve never properly visited Cork – so I don’t know the area too well, but I do know that the Irish Open was a great success when it was hosted there in the past.
"It should be a good venue for us again and it is great that they are moving the Irish Open around. "The Irish Open is a big part of The European Tour schedule and has been for a long time now, so to still keep it going is important and I want to lend my support to it as much as I can.
“It is the week after the US Open, so I would love to get a few more international players along, but it is a strong event in itself anyway and it is great that all of Ireland’s Major Champions are supporting it once again.”
Joining those Major Champions is the unmistakable figure of Daly, himself a two time Major winner and a huge favourite with the Irish Open galleries since he finished second on his Irish Open debut in 1994
Often compared to recent Masters Champion Bubba Watson in his unorthodox approach to the game, Daly remains as popular as ever on both sides of the Atlantic with his outlandish playing attire and willingness to interact with spectators. Daly is the only player to win two Major golf championships but not participate in The Ryder Cup, but he is looking forward to meeting up with McGinley and all of the other Irish players in Cork and said:
“I can’t wait to get over there. I always love my time in Ireland, which is a place of great golf courses and brilliant fans.”
The 2014 Irish Open takes place on the Jeff Howes-designed course at Fota Island Resort, offering great value for a full day’s entertainment with advance tickets priced at €30 for an Adult Day Ticket (€35 on the gate) and €70 for Adult Season Tickets (€80 on the gate).
Children under 16 go free.

SCOTTISH DISABILITY GOLF GOES

ACROSS THE BORDER

NEWS RELEASE
The Scottish Disability Golf Partnership made the now annual trip south of the Border to host the Northern Disabled Open at Morecambe Golf Club, Lancashire on St George's Day, April 23 and the South Lakes Masters at Carus Green Golf
Club on April 24.

The Charity also hosted a First Swing Clinic on the
morning of the 24th at the Carus Green Driving range. The First Swing Clinic offered the opportunity for disabled golfers and others who have never played the game, to receive some professional coaching from head professional Dave Turner and his team.
Some of the world's top disabled golfers received some fine tuning on their game alongside youngsters trying out golf for the first time.

SDGP chairman Peter Osborne said: "It was really inspiring to see youngsters with significant disabilities giving golf a try and chatting to and spending time with disabled players who have played in top level disabled competitions all
around the world.

The Scottish Disability Golf Partnership, a registered charity, prides itself on the fact it has a pathway for those starting out in golf right up to those competing internationally at the top levels of
disabled golf, our numerous First Swing Clinics across the UK help us provide this pathway".
For the established golfers who turned up from across the UK, the Northern Disabled Open at Morecambe Golf Club was a difficult test in the wind and rain.

Peter Osborne, from Carnforth and Morecambe GC  member,  made the most of local knowledge and  narrowly won the title, beating Derek Milne from Fife, into second by two shots.
The South Lakes Masters was held in stunning Lake District sunshine and Kerr Scott from Glasgow came out on top, narrowly holding off Stevie Cummingham from Alloa by a single shot.
In the coaches' event, Joshua Osborne, aged 10, 40-handicapper and pupil at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School in Carnforth, won both days' competition with scores of 31 and 37 Stableford points respectively.

Joshua, son of Northern Open winner Peter, regularly attends SDGP events where he plays and guides for his dad who is registered blind.
Jim Gales MBE, founder and secretary of the SDGP, said: "It is really great to take the First Swing Clinics across the UK and give our members the chance to receive top quality coaching and introduce potential new members to the game. The SDGP is a registered charity which relies on donations to run this type of event."
If you have any form of disability which affects your ability to play golf, please feel free to come and get involved or indeed, if you would like to support the work of the Scottish Disability Golf Partnership please visit our website www.sdgp.org.uk for more details.
