CLYDEWAY GOLF PAIR SHARING LEAD AT START OF 54-HOLE EVENT

P and H CHAMPIONSHIP
Dundonald Links

Clydeway Golf Performance Centre's Graham Fox and Paul O'Hara gave the Uddingston driving range a boost today by sharing the lead with Christopher Currie (Caldwell), last year's Scottish Alliance champon, on the four-under-par 68 mark in the opening round of the new 54-hole event on the Tartan Tour, the £3,500 P and H Championship, at Dundonald Links.
Former Scottish PGA champion Fox (34-34) and O'Hara (32-36) had seven birdies and three bogeys apiece.
Currie's highlight in halves of 32-36 was an eagle 3 at the par-5 fifth.
The leading trio are one shot ahead of Bathgate's Louis Gaughan (36-33) and Robert Arnott (Bishopbriggs (36-33) in a field of 113 competitors. Gaughan had to work hard to make up for a double bogey 6 at the eighth but he finished with a bag of six birdies, four of them over the last seven holes.
Arnott bogeyed two of the first four holes but covered the last 14 with a bogey-free four under par.
There are prize categories for trainees, club pros and seniors over the first 36 holes.

THREE-ROUND EVENT HAS £40,000 PRIZE FUND (£10,000 TO WINNER)

PGA EUROPRO TOUR RETURNS
TO MONTROSE LINKS THIS WEEK
NEWS RELEASE
+Scroll down to the end of this article for a link to the first-round tee times.

The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour returns to the east coast of Scotland this week for its second event of the season, the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters at Montrose Links.

The tournament represents the second time the Tour has visited the historic Angus course, having made a successful debut there in September last year.
Oliver Farr took the £10,000 winners’ cheque on that occasion and went on to top the Order of Merit at the end of the season, securing his Challenge Tour card in the process.

Among the field for the 54-hole event, which begins tomorrow (Tuesday, April 29) and concludes on Thursday, is former British Amateur champion Gary Wolstenholme, brothers Elliot and Zack Saltman, from Archerfield Links, East Lothian, and winner of the season-opening Matchroom Championship at the Belfry, William Harrold.

The tournament boasts a £40,000 prize fund and the previous two winners of the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters – Welsh pair Farr and Stuart Manley (at Rowallan Castle in 2012) – have both graduated to the Challenge Tour in the season of their success at the event.

Spectator entry is free throughout the week, and the tournament will be filmed for a two-hour highlights show to be broadcast on Sky Sports HD on May 13.

Neil Armour, Chief Executive Officer of Eagle Orchid said: “It is fantastic to be able to bring the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters to Montrose again this year.

“I was very impressed by the course, the organisation and the warm welcome offered during the event last September, and the level of golf played was exceptional.

“To see Stuart Manley playing on the European Tour this season is testament to the importance of development golf, and Oliver Farr proved our second successful winner when he gained his Challenge Tour card last season. I look forward to seeing who emerges victorious this time around.”

RORY ENTERS PGA CHAMPIONSHIP, MAY 22-25

McILROY TO PLAY IN AT WENTWORTH
NEWS RELEASE
Two-time Major Champion Rory McIlroy is targeting The European Tour’s flagship event as the next addition to his glittering CV after confirming his participation in the 2014 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, from May 22-25.
The Northern Irishman, one of the most exciting talents in the game, has been steadily returning to his best form, with three top ten finishes in five European Tour appearances so far in 2014, including finishing runner-up in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
He will now hope to convert that into silverware when he joins the world class field over the famous West Course next month, as the BMW PGA Championship celebrates its 60th anniversary.
McIlroy aims to succeed Italian Matteo Manassero as champion of the €4,750,000 event, with the former World Number One bidding to add his name to an illustrious group of fellow Major winners who have captured the prestigious title, namely Tony Jacklin, Sir Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam and José María Olazábal.
“The BMW PGA Championship is always one of the highlights of the year and it is a title we are all keen to win,” said McIlroy, who won the US Open in 2011 and US PGA Championship in 2012.
“I’ve been a little hit and miss at Wentworth in recent years, but I think this year my game is in much better shape going into the tournament, so I’m feeling confident about my chances of performing well there.
“With it being The European Tour’s flagship event, it is a big week for everyone involved and there is always a great atmosphere.
“Some of the greats of the game have won the title over the years and it would certainly be nice to join them on the Championship’s 60th anniversary.
“Wentworth always kicks off the golf season in Europe, leading up to The Open Championship, and hopefully a good performance there can launch a successful summer for me.”
McIlroy is the latest star attraction to confirm his participation in the BMW PGA Championship, joining players including four-time Major Champion, US Open Champion Justin Rose, Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter, two-time runner-up Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Race to Dubai winner Henrik Stenson.
Tickets for the BMW PGA Championship are still available, with advanced prices valid until May 19 at tickets.europeantour.com or on 0800 023 2557.

SUNNINGDALE REPLACES WEATHER-HIT ROYAL CINQUE

VENUE CHANGE ANNOUNCED FOR

OPEN  CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

QUALIFYING

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R and A
Sunningdale’s New Course has been announced as one of the four venues for Open Championship Final Qualifying this year.

The Berkshire course will replace Royal Cinque Ports as one of the four Final Qualifying (FQ) venues for 2014 after the links at Deal in Kent was affected by the severe storms which caused widespread flooding in the south-east of England over the winter.

Sunningdale has previously played host to International Final Qualifying for The Open Championship and will join Gailes Links, Hillside and Woburn as the four venues for FQ which takes place on Tuesday, 1 July.

The format for FQ has been changed for this year’s Open Championship to include events at venues covering Scotland and the north-west, central and southern regions of England.
It is designed to provide a more accessible route into The Open for competitors qualifying from the 13 Regional Qualifying events around the country.

Three places in The Open, which will take place at Royal Liverpool from 13-20 July, will be available at each of the four FQ events.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director - Championships at The R and A, said, “We are very grateful to Sunningdale for agreeing to assist us with staging Final Qualifying this year. I’m sure the players will relish the challenge of trying to qualify for The Open at Sunningdale.

“It is unfortunate that Royal Cinque Ports is not in a position to host the event after the terrible weather they experienced over the winter but we know the course is recovering well and look forward to going there in 2015.”

Tomorrow (Tuesday, April 29) is the closing date for entries to the Murcar Links' tournament which will be the second of the season. There are 14 entries so far, 12 female professionals and two amateurs, Lauren Watson (Deeside), pictured above, and Nichola Ferguson (Milngavie).

THIRD COUNTY VICTORY BY IRVINE GC MEMBER

JOHN SHANKS WINS AYRSHIRE TITLE

OVER HOME COURSE

FROM THE AYRSHIRE GOLF WEBSITE
John Shanks (Irvine GC) won the 2014 Ayrshire stroke-play championship, over his home course on Sunday, taking the title by two shots from former Irvine GC member Stephen Spence who now plays out of Royal Troon.
Shanks' first win in the championship came at West Kilbride in 2007, and his victory this year was his second success over his home course after his victory the last time the championship was played over the Bogside course in 2009.

Shanks showed consistency over the two rounds, carding one-over-par returns of 72 in both rounds for a 144 total.

The only sub-par round of the day came in the morning from Scott Brown (Turnberry), who led after the first round by one shot from Mark Anderson (Irvine) with ultimate winner Shanks and Steven McEwan (Loudoun) one shot further back.

Brown, however, faded in the afternoon to a seven over par 78 for a 148 total and fourth place overall Defending champion Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Cuthbert) suffered an unfortunate disqualification as a result of an unsigned afternoon card, which denied him a place in the top eight finishers.
At the conclusion of the competition, prizes were awarded by Ayrshire Golf Association Vice President James McMurdo (Ballochmyle)
