RUSSELL KNOX'S 73 LEAVES HIM FIGHTING TO BEAT THE CUT

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE

Avondale, Louisiana -- Ben Martin’s first course record was earned in pretty stress-free conditions: It was a non-competitive 62 at his home course, Greenwood Country Club, South Carolina. He earned his second Thursday at windy TPC Louisiana and was rewarded with the first-round lead at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
“I think back, and that round and this round were two of the best rounds I’ve ever played,” said Martin, whose 62 bettered the course record by two shots.
“It was everything. The shots were going where I was looking and the putts were going in just like I was seeing them.”
It’s a strange run of golf that Martin is on. In his last nine starts, he’s made only two cuts, but finished third both times (at the Puerto Rico Open  and last week’s RBC Heritage). Thursday’s 62 was the best round of Martin’s US PGA Tour career by three shots.
After a number of low scores were posted in the morning wave, TPC Louisiana’s winds kicked up in the afternoon. It was a familiar feel for Martin, who played his way into in the final group Saturday at windy Harbour Town.
“I hate the cliché, ‘One shot at a time,’ but when it gets windy like that, that’s really what you have to focus on,” he said. “We played in the wind every day last week, so I was probably a little bit used to it.”
The bad news for Martin is that only four of 22 first-round leaders have gone on to victory this year on the US Tour. But the good news is that he fits another trend: The history of first-time winners at the Zurich Classic. Six of the past nine winners of the event have been first-time US PGA Tour winners.
“I don’t know what causes that,” he said. “I know that for myself, I like most Pete Dye courses. We played one last week and I was successful there. I guess whatever he does kind of fits my eye.

LEARNING CURVE
Michael Thompson started his college career at nearby Tulane, but he wouldn’t call himself a TPC Louisiana expert.
Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, just before Thompson and the Green Wave were getting ready to start practising. The team was relocated to Dallas and Thompson transferred to Alabama shortly after.
“I haven’t played here much, but I’m starting to get more comfortable playing this course,” he said after an opening 66 that left him in a tie for fifth.
“At first, I thought it was a really long, big course and I felt like I had to overpower everything, but I’m starting to play more within myself and when I do that, I have rounds like today.”
As far as his golf game goes, Thompson said the storm and his ensuing transfer was a blessing in disguise.
“I loved New Orleans, being in the city and always having a lot to do,” he said. “But I’ve always told everybody that if I had stayed at Tulane, I probably wouldn’t have developed into the golfer that I am today as quickly. Transferring to Alabama was great for me.”
Colin Farquharson writes: Padraig Harrington and Martin Laird both returned two-under-par 70s to be T36. Paul Casey and Justin Rose had 71s for T54.
Laird birdied the eighth, 13th and 14th and dropped only one shot, at the fifth.
Russell Knox did not have a good day. He will be fighting to beat the cut in the second round after an opening score of one-over 73 which leaves him in T102 position after 18 holes.
The now married man from Inverness birdied the long second, the sixth, the long seventh .. and that was the end of his sub-par figures. He bogeyed the short third, the eighth, the short ninth and the 15th in halves of 36-37.

PINEHURST Np 2 PULLS THEM IN FOR JUNE MAJOR

MEGA BUCKS IN ENTRY FEES! USGA

ACCEPTS 10,127 U S OPEN ENTRIES

The United States Golf Association has accepted a record number of entries for the 2014 U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst No. 2 in the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina.
The total of 10,127 entrants eclipses the 9,860 for last year’s championship at Merion Golf Club. Among the record total are 51 players, including 12 past champions, who are currently fully exempt into the field (see list below).
“The number of entries, from across the world, affirms both the great appeal of playing in our national championship and the history surrounding Pinehurst No. 2,” said Daniel B. Burton, USGA vice president and chairman of the Championship Committee.
“We look forward to local and sectional qualifying and to conducting the unprecedented U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open in consecutive weeks at this renowned Donald Ross-designed course in June.”
The U.S. Open will be held for the third time at Pinehurst No. 2 on June 12-15. To be eligible, a player had to have a handicap not exceeding 1.4, or be a professional.
Local qualifying, which will be played over 18 holes at 111 sites in the United States, will take place between May 2-19.
Sectional qualifying, played over 36 holes, will be conducted on Monday, May 26 at two international sites (Japan and England) and on Monday, June 2, at 10 sites in the United States, ranging from New York to California.
This will be the 10th year with two international qualifiers, which were established in 2005, the last time the U.S. Open was contested at Pinehurst No. 2.
Justin Rose, the 2013 champion, and 11 other champions are fully exempt from having to qualify for the championship. They are:
Angel Cabrera (2007), Michael Campbell (2005), Ernie Els (1994, 1997), Jim Furyk (2003), Lucas Glover (2009), Retief Goosen (2001, 2004), Graeme McDowell (2010), Rory McIlroy (2011), Geoff Ogilvy (2006), Webb Simpson (2012) and Tiger Woods (2000, 2002, 2008).

For the fourth consecutive year, only online entries were accepted.
The number of fully exempt players will increase with the inclusion of the top 60 and ties from the Official World Golf Ranking, as of May 26 and June 9. The winners of The Players Championship (May 8-11) and European Tour BMW PGA Championship (May 22-25) will also earn exemptions.
This year marks the sixth time that the USGA accepted more than 9,000 entries for the U.S. Open.
More information about the U.S. Open before, during and after the 2014 championship at Pinehurst No. 2 is available at www.usopen.com.

NORWEGIAN SETS COURSE RECORD 63 AT LUMINE

HENRY EAGLES 18th TO BE LEADING

SCOT IN SPAIN

Despite a double bogey 6 at the eighth Scott Henry shot a two-under-par 69 (36-33) to be the best of eight Scots at the end of the first day of the Challenge de Catalunya at Lumine Golf and Beach Club, Spain.
After birdies at the first, second, 10th and 12th, Henry, pictured,  made his day with an eagle 3 at the par-5 18th to be six shots behind Norwegian Joakim Mikkelsen who set a course-record 73 to lead by one.
Jack Doherty and Paul McKechnie, both with halves of 35, also matched each other's one-under 70s.
Callum Macaulay had an excellent outward half of 32 but6 came home in 39 for a 71.
A double bogey 6 at the 12th dragged him down.
Challenge Tour rookie David Law was alongside Macaulay on the 71 mark with halves of 35-36.
Law birdied the second and fifth but did not have another until the 17th
Raymond Russell's five bogeys outnumbered his four birdies in a 72 (37-35) while Duncan
Stewart bogeyed the last for a 72 (35-37).
Andrew McArthur brought up the rear for the Scottish eightsome with a 74 (37-37),
lowlighted by a double bogey 7 at the 15th. It could have been worse. He got his second birdie of the day at the 18th.

Challenge Tour breaks new ground in Azerbaijan

The European Challenge Tour will once again be growing golf around the world when the inaugural Azerbaijan Open Challenge marks the first professional golf tournament held in the country, which lies south of Russia next to the Caspian sea.
The addition of the €300,000 tournament, which will be held at National Azerbaijan Golf Club, in Quba, from July 31-August 3, means that the Challenge Tour schedule is now one of the strongest, most lucrative and far-reaching in its 26-year history.

TAYLOR WINS PLAY-OFF FOR LAST SPGA PLACE

FENWICK FIRST WITH A 66 AT CRIEFF

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Dunbar tour pro Neil Fenwick shot a five-under-par 66 at Crieff today to win the £100
first prize in the Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship Qualifier 2 over 18 holes.
Fenwick, pictured, headed the 17 qualifiers who will go forward to the main event at the Perthshire venue from May 5 to 7. It has been brought forward several months because of the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September.
Fenwick started inauspiciously with a bogey 5 and was still one over par standing on the fifth tee. But
it was a different story over the next 11 holes with a six-under-par bogey-free run studded with birdies at the fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth, 10th and 15th.
He finished thre shots ahead of Paul Shields (Kirkhill), Michael Patterson (Kilmacolm) and Newmachar's Malcolm Isaacs who bounced back from a double bogey 6 at the second to birdie five holes between the third and the 10th.
Shields had four birdies and two bogeys; Patterson five birdies and three bogeys.
There was a six-way play-off, featuring the players who returned two-over-par 73s, for the last qualifying place. It lasted one hole, thanks to a birdie by Ian Taylor (Drumpellier).

However, these are just small steps in a long-term formative process.

Early achievement in sport is not necessarily a good indicator of success in the future and  the best indicators of future success are psychological characteristics like commitment, resilience, self learning and work ethic. These are traits which we have witnessed our winners and many of the others on the tour developing as they progress on their learning journey.

Winning is important but at the Scottish Junior Golf Tour we believe that success is even more important.
So what is the difference between Success and Winning?

John Wooden, one of the most revered coaches in the history of sports, described success as “peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.”

So, not all our juniors can win order of merits in a particular year but if they tried their best, worked hard and stuck in then they too were successful.

At the Tour we aim to provide a rewarding shared experience for all our juniors and their families. Our positive “learning not telling” philosophy and inclusive egalitarian ethos combine to form a truly holistic development environment for all our golfers and their families; so that in the end everybody is successful.

RICHIE RAMSAY TOP SCOT IN JOINT NINTH PLACE WITH A 69

QUIROS, DYSON SHARE LEAD

ON 67 IN VOLVO CHINA OPEN

Alvaro Quiros and Simon Dyson share the first round lead of five under par 67 at the 20th Volvo China Open after the first round at the Genzon Golf Club in Shenzhen.
Reigning champion Brett Rumford, who is looking to become the first man in the tournament’s history to successfully defend the title, is just one stroke off the pace after an opening 68, while his playing partner Henrik Stenson battled a stomach virus to produce a one under 71.
Stenson can replace Tiger Woods as World Number One with victory in China this week.
Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter produced a three under 69 to move into contention. Aberdonian Richie Ramsay is the top Scot, also on the 69 mark.
Key Player Quotes
Alvaro Quiros: “It was a good round of golf. It was a bit of a shame on the last par five because I was half a metre away from having a great chance to make another eagle but I ended up on the lip of the bunker and had to settle for a chip and two putts.
"It was a good round. My game is improving - You can’t see it yet on the rankings but I have been playing better.”
Simon Dyson: “I have had a bit of success here and really enjoy playing in China. Obviously I have won this tournament before so that always gives you a good feeling and, like I said, I just played nicely today so hopefully I can continue to do that over the next three days.”
Brett Rumford: “There is a long way to go and there are a lot of very good players here this week so I just need to try and keep playing and scoring the way I did over the next two rounds and try to get myself into a position where I have a chance to win coming down the back nine on Sunday.
"That’s what we’re all trying to do over those first three rounds and in that regard today was very much the start I was looking for.”
Henrik Stenson: “The body doesn’t feel great, the stomach is upset. I’m not throwing up but I’m not too keen on eating and my energy levels aren’t the best, but once I got going I felt better than before I teed off and made it around and actually played alright.”
Ian Poulter: “I played nicely – I just had one tee shot that kind of slipped away and bounced into a hazard, and I made a bogey there, but apart from that it was a very clean card.
"I played nicely, had plenty of chances, rolled a few in and missed a few. A fairly decent start.”

+Frenchman Alexander Levy and South Korea’s Il-hwan Park will complete their first rounds on Friday morning after bad light saw play suspended for the day. Both men are currently one stroke off the lead with the par five ninth hole to complete.
