REVAMPED PINEHURST COURSE STAGES BACK-TO-BACK MAJORS

Pinehurst No. 2
USGA Museum picture: Pinehurst No 2 15th hole
PINEHURST No. 2 WILL BE 7,562yd LONG
FOR MEN'S US OPEN AND 6,649yd FOR WOMEN'S US OPEN WEEK LATER

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
PINEHURST, North Carolina (AP) --- Pinehurst No. 2 is ready for its double dip of U.S. Opens.
In less than two months, it will host the men's U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open in consecutive weeks.
USGA Executive Director Mike Davis said  Monday that he is expecting "a challenging test of golf, but ... a great test of golf" on the course designed by Donald Ross and recently restored to his specifications by Ben Crenshaw.
When the men tee it up June 12-15 and the women follow a week later, they'll find wider fairways, no rough and only two cuts of grass - green and fairway. Ross' famed turtleback greens remain largely unchanged.
Davis says the course is "going to give the best players in the world some shots that they simply haven't had to make in past U.S. Opens."
The distances will be different but the intent is for the course to play the same way in both opens.
The course will play at 7,562 yards for the men and 6,649 for the women. In both weeks, par will be 70.
Ben Kimball, executive director of the U.S. Women's Open, said the plan is to have the pins placed in roughly the same quadrants of the greens in each corresponding round of both tournaments.
"We want to give them the same look from Week 1 to Week 2," Kimball said.
Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted U.S. Opens in 1999 and 2005. The U.S. Women's Open has been held at nearby Pine Needles three times since 1996 - but never at Ross's signature course.
"Personally, I think this is the coolest thing ever," said Vicki Goetze-Ackerman, the president of the LPGA player directors. She won the U.S. Women's Amateur winner in 1989 when it was held at No. 2.
Crenshaw led a year-long $2.5 million face-lift for the course, removing the rough and reverting its lay-out closer to Ross' original design.
"This has always been a wonderful, iconic golf course," Davis said. "But what it is right now, it is all those things plus more. It's hard to believe you could make it better, but it's made it better and it's made it a good bit better."
The U.S. Open has a reputation as "the hardest test in golf," Davis said, but he called that a byproduct of the USGA's set-ups because "we're not that good to actually dial it in there."
Shots that go into what would have been the rough might land in sandy hardpan, some wiregrass, or even on what he called "natural vegetation."
"Will it be easier?" Davis asked. "Probably a little bit easier, but I suppose there's an element of luck involved."
Davis said the greens should be slightly less firm during the women's open.
He said it's too soon to say if in the future the USGA will try to pull off another double-header like this one.
"We really want to see how it goes," he said.

NO PLAY POSSIBLE TODAY IN MOROCCO

DAR ES SALAM OPEN NOW 2 ROUNDS
FROM THE EPD TOUR WEBSITE
Rabat, Morocco As severe thunderstorms made play impossible today, the 2014 Open Dar Es Salam had to be reduced to 36 holes.
Tournament director Simon Bowler was forced to make this decision on Monday afternoon when thunder and lightning crossed the golf course without a break and with the forecast giving no hope to let the players go out on the course.
The start of the second and final round of the tournament is now scheduled to tee off at 8am Tuesday local time.
In the lead after 18 holes is German Sebastian Heisele at five-under-par 68. Another German, Moritz Lampert, and H P Bacher from Austria share second place on 71.
Scots Conor O'Neil, Philip McLean and Sam Kiloh are tied 37th, each having returned a five-over-par 78.

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

 SUN SHINES ON COUNTY GOLFERS.
The Clackmannan county competition season opened last weekend with the Spring meetings at Braehead and Dollar.
Played in fine weather, the events attracted a number of late entries with well over one hundred local golfers participating.
Home players triumphed at both venues. Top net scorers at the Division 1 event at Braehead were Gary Rafferty 69-5: 64, and Gary Little 74-10: 64.  Top scratch scores were Gary Rafferty and Ross Benvie with rounds of  70.  The CSS was 69 (home players) and 70 (visitors).
In the Division 2 events at Dollar, top net scorers were James Currie 83-18: 65 and Gordon Fenwick 77-12: 65.
Gordon returned the best scratch score of 77.  The CSS was 69.
                                                                                    GREAT START BY SCOTT
Dollar’s Scott Borrowman had a great start to his 2014 season. Following his retention of the Champion of Champions title at Leven, he finished joint third in the weather-shortened Craigmillar Park Open which is the first Open event of the 2014 Order of Merit.
Despite this, he was not selected for the 21-man squad for the Great Britain and Ireland St Andrews Trophy match against Europe in August.
Five Scots were selected. No-one could quibble about the first four as they are the top Scots in the World Amateur Golf rankings.  However the fifth selection probably raised a few eyebrows, bypassing the next nine top Scottish players (including the current Scottish Amateur Champion) and dropping almost 300 world ranking places.
Nine players will be selected during the season to play in this the St Andrews Trophy match to be held in Sweden.
                                                                                LAWRENCE MAKING PROGRESS
Alva’s Lawrence Allan continues to develop his golf with South Eastern University Louisiana, and with a number of good rounds, his world amateur golf ranking has improved by 116 places to 767. His progress can be followed on the “lion sport” web site of SE University Louisiana
                                                                          COUNTY TEAM POISED FOR WIN
The final match of the Provan Salver takes place this weekend at Tulliallan where Clackmannanshire take on Perth and Kinross.  With previous wins against Fife  (5.5-2.5) and Angus  (7-1), the team will be in confident mood and hopefully will get the job done.

ENGLISHMAN SHARES LEAD WITH A 65 IN MALAYSIA

CHAN AND JACKSON SET SCORCHING

PACE IN LANGKAWI, MALAYSIA

Chinese Taipei’s Chan Shih-chang and Englishman Grant Jackson produced matching eight-under-par 64s to set a scorching pace in the first round of the Asian Development Tour's PGM LADA Langkawi Championship on Monday.
Chan sank six birdie putts and one eagle at the Gunung Raya Golf Resort on the holiday isle while Jackson notched eight birdies in the US$80,000 tournamnt.
American Paul Harris carded a 66 to share third place with Thai brothers Sattaya Supupramai and Poosit Supupramai while Chinese prospect Zhi Shang carded a 67 for equal sixth position with Singapore’s Koh Deng Shan, Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Tung-shu and Pasamet Pogamnerd of Thailand.
The omen was good for Jackson the moment he stepped into the locker room. “I was given the locker with the number 64 and I guess that was the key to my round,” said Jackson, , who won once on the ADT and finished fifth on the Order of Merit last season.
“I played really nicely and holed a few putts. I was working on my putting with a putting aide in my room for two hours last night and I guess it helped me today. I didn’t play too well in the first two events of the season, so this is a nice way to start the tournament.”
This season, the ADT will reward the top five players on the final Order of Merit at the end of the season with playing rights for the 2015 Asian Tour season.
This will be a significant boost for aspiring professionals on the ADT as this represents the highest number of Asian Tour cards up for grabs since the ADT was established in 2010. Only the top three players on the final ADT Order of Merit for each season obtained their Asian Tour cards previously.
The ADT, which was launched in 2010 with five tournaments before growing to eight in 2011, 13 in 2012 and a record 16 in the 2013 season, has established itself as a successful platform for upcoming players to gain entry on the region’s premier Tour.

SPANISH VETERAN MAKES IMPACT ON US SENIORS TOUR

Miguel Angel Jimenez wins on debut

 at Greater Gwinnett in Georgia

FROM THE US CHAMPIONS TOUR WEBSITE

MORE: Leaderboard | Jimenez grabs wire-to-wire win | Highlights | Notebook | Schwab Cup

DULUTH, Georgia – Forget about the image. The ponytail, the fat cigars, the appetite for red from the Spanish vineyards.
Miguel Angel Jimenez is a gamer. He simply plays golf in a disarming manner, enjoying it in the same way that he savors everything in life. That conceals, occasionally at least, the tenacity of what he does and how he does it.
Jimenez made his Champions Tour debut at the Greater Gwinnett Championship. On Sunday, he completed his dismantling of the TPC Sugarloaf and those who would challenge him, including the class of the Champions Tour, Bernhard Langer and Fred Couples.
Jimenez shot a final round 67 for a 202 total, 14-under-par, and a 2-shot victory over Bernhard Langer, who posted three straight 68s. Jay Haas (67) claimed third with 206, followed by Fred Couples (70) another shot back.

“It shows my game is in very good shape now,” Jimenez said. “A very nice day, I played very solid, very well. It’s great to play in first Champions event and win.”
"The Mechanic" from Malaga earned $270,000 for this victory which means he earned at least $400,000 for his two weeks' play in Georgia, having finished fourth in the Masters.

Jimenez made 15 birdies and an eagle at TPC Sugarloaf. He dropped shots on consecutive holes in the second round – a bogey at the third followed by a double-bogey at the fourth – before finishing with nine birdies on the final 32 holes. All three rounds were played with lift, clean and place rules.
Jimenez became the 18th player to win his Champions Tour debut and the second in two events. Jeff Maggert won the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic on March 23.

It is the second time in Champions Tour history that golfers making their debut have won back-to-back. In 1980, the first two official events ever played on the Champions Tour were won by Don January (Atlantic City International) and Roberto De Vicenzo (U.S. Senior Open).
Jimenez also became the first player to win a European Tour event (Hong Kong) and a Champions Tour event in the same season.
Jimenez has a career-defining goal for 2014. One way or the other, he will be a member of Europe’s Ryder Cup contingent for the match at Gleneagles in September.

He has already been named an assistant by Captain Paul McGinley. That’s nice but it’s not what Jimenez craves
A native of Malaga, in Spain’s Andalucia region, Jimenez wants to represent his nation and his continent as a player. He wants that in the worst way and everything he does in 2014 will be geared toward that goal. He will concentrate on a European Tour schedule.
If Jimenez qualifies for the Ryder Cup on points or if McGinley adds him as a captain’s pick, he will become the oldest ever member of the European side in a competition that dates back to 1927. Jimenez has played in the Ryder Cup four times. Twice, he has been on the winning side and twice on the losing side.

A fifth appearance would see him surpass Ted Ray, who was 50 years, two months and five days old at the inaugural contest in 1927.

Jimenez became eligible for the Champions Tour on January 5 when he celebrated his 50th birthday. He played at TPC Sugarloaf on a sponsor’s exemption and became the first sponsor exemption to win on the Champions Tour since Phil Blackmar won the AT and T Championship in 2009.
Jimenez’s Ryder Cup record isn’t the best. He is 4-8-3 and he’d like a chance to improve on that.

A man who has aged gracefully, like his favourite wines, Jimenez has won 13 of his 20 European Tour victories since turning 40.

As a result of the Ryder Cup ambition, Jimenez’s participation on the Champions Tour is likely to be limited this year.

Or is it?

“I still go my goal for the end of the year,” Jimenez said. “I would love to be part of the Ryder Cup.

“People want me all over the place. I don’t know what’s going to happen for me. It’s not about money … (it would) make me feel proud myself if I play in the Ryder Cup once more.”

Langer said Jimenez told him that this was a one-off cameo on the Champions Tour.

“He said he would not play any more this year (on the Champions Tour),” Langer said.

“He wants to make the Ryder Cup team and be the oldest player ever to play for Europe. But golf can change. Who knows? Maybe he makes the Ryder Cup team by July and comes out here. I think we’re going to see more of him in the future but not in the next few months.”
The final threesome Sunday was a matchmaker’s dream. All the elements fell neatly in place.

The most popular attraction on the Champions Tour, Couples, was playing alongside the best player, Langer, and the rookie everybody wanted to see, Jimenez.

“That’s about as good a pairing as you’re going to get,” Couples said.

The timing was impeccable, too. A week after the Masters Tournament, where Jimenez finished fourth, Langer tied for eight and Couples was in contention before slipping in the final round and finishing T20, the trio arrived in excellent form.

Between them, the world-class players have a combined 19 Ryder Cup appearances – Langer, 10; Couples, 5; and Jimenez, 4.

“The three of us are certainly maybe in the top 10 senior golfers in the world right now,” Langer said after Saturday’s second round.

For two weeks in Georgia, the best senior in the world was a Mechanic from Spain with a finely-tuned golf game.
