GRAEME ROBERTSON SLUMPS OUT OF THIRD-ROUND LEAD TO TIE FOR SECOND

SCOTT BORROWMAN RETAINS

SCOTTISH CHAMPIONS' TITLE

Dollar's former Scottish youths champion Scott Borrowman won the Scottish Champion of Champions 72-hole title for the second year in a row over the Leven Golf Society's links in Fife today.
Borrowman, in the mix from the start of the traditional opening big tournament of the Scottish competitive calendar, started the final round in second place, two shots behind international team-mate Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie).
But Robertson surprisingly slumped to a five-over-par 76 - par 71, CSS 74 - on the final circuit for a four-round aggregate of six-under-par 278, having  broken 70 in each of his three earlier rounds.
Borrowman himself could not complete a fourth sub-70 round, having shot 69, 66 and 69 earlier, but a one-over 72 for 276 was good enough to win the prestigious title by two strokes from the fast finishing Scott Gibson (Southerness) whose one-under 70 was the best of the final round, and Kilmacolm's Matthew Clark, third with 18 holes to go, and the faltering Robertson.
Clark signed off with a 73 for 278

RICHIE RAMSAY FINISHES JT 2nd BEHIND FIRST TIME WINNER MARCO CRESPI

European Tour rookie Marco Crespi claimed a maiden title on The Race to Dubai with a two stroke victory at the inaugural NH Collection Open.
Aberdeen's Richie Ramsay was joint
second and another Scot, Marc Warren, finished joint sixth
Starting the day a shot adrift at La Reserva de Sotogrande Club de Golf the Italian fired a final round 69 to finish ten under and win by two from Jordi Garcia-Pinto (66) and Richie Ramsay (68).
Overnight leader Matthew Nixon shot one over playing alongside Crespi in the final group and finished in a tie for fourth on seven under alongside Felipe Aguilar (71).
Four birdies in the first nine holes were the key for Crespi as he raced to the turn in 32 strokes, and while consecutive dropped shots from the 12th may have looked like a wobble, the Qualifying School graduate bounced straight back with a birdie at the 14th to ensure victory.
At 35 years old the Italian is the oldest rookie to win in European Tour history and moves to 49th in The Race to Dubai.

Key Quotes: Marco Crespi (-10)
“I started very well today. I birdied the first and that gave me the confidence to go low and that’s it. I just had to manage my pressure on the back nine. Felipe was very close but he made a couple of mistakes so he made it easier for me.
“I lost a couple of shots on 12 and 13. On 12 I hit a very bad 8 iron to the green, my only bad shot of the day. On 13 I had a very long iron, a 3 iron and it wasn’t a really bad shot.
“But then I birdied the next. I really like the 14th because I birdied it every day.
“Anyway, I played very good and I am very happy.”

With this Win
  • Is the first rookie to win on The European Tour since Peter Uihlein at the 2013 Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI.

  • Graduated from the 2013 European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage. Is the first Qualifying School graduate to win the year after graduation since Branden Grace at the 2012 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

  • Aged 35 he is the oldest rookie on The European Tour this season. At 35 years and 152 days he is the oldest rookie to win in European Tour history.

HUMBLE, Texas -- Matt Kuchar’s steady play continues in Texas. He’ll play in Sunday’s final group for the second consecutive week in the Lone Star State.
Kuchar will start the Shell Houston Open’s final round with a four-shot lead over Sergio Garcia and Cameron Tringale. Kuchar shot a 4-under 68 at the Golf Club of Houston on Saturday and is at 15-under 201 (66-67-68). Tringale fired a 69, while Garcia, the 36-hole leader, fired a 73 on Saturday.
Kuchar finished fourth at last week’s Valero Texas Open after being tied for the lead with nine holes remaining.
“It’s a nice position to have played well last week, to have been in the last group with a chance to win, and to come back this week, completely different course, and have another shot to win,” Kuchar said.
He missed just one green Saturday and has hit 48 of 54 greens this week. He’s made just three bogeys in three rounds; two of those bogeys came Saturday, at Nos. 9 and 18. His lead could have been larger if not for a three-putt from 40 feet on Saturday’s final hole.
“It’s a bummer to three-putt the last one,” Kuchar said. “My speed got a little off there. … but all in all putted well. I’m not at all disappointed with the way I putted or the way I played. I’m pretty pleased.”

QUITE A TRIP: Tringale was on his recruiting trip at Georgia Tech when he first met Kuchar, who played college golf for the Yellow Jackets.
“He and his wife had just gotten done taking a run around the campus and were going into the golf office to see coach,” Tringale said. “It was pretty cool for a little 16-year-old kid.”
Tringale is seeking his first PGA TOUR victory. He has vacation planned in Hawaii with his family next week, but those plans could change. A victory would earn him an invitation to next week’s Masters.
“Hopefully I’ll have a good round tomorrow and maybe ‘ixnay’ those plans,” he said.

Sergio Garcia talks about his 73
  • INTERVIEW

Sergio Garcia talks about his 73

FALLING BACK: Garcia started Saturday with a one-shot lead, but managed just two birdies Saturday en route to a 73. He made 11 birdies and an eagle in the first two rounds.
Garcia had more than 3.0 strokes gained-putting in each of the first two rounds, but gained just 0.459 on Saturday. He’s still second in the field in that statistic, though.
He hit 13 greens Saturday; he’s hit 13 greens in each of the first three rounds. He also hit 10 of 14 fairways.

MISSING PIECES: Phil Mickelson will start the final round of the Shell Houston Open in sixth place, nine shots off the lead. He shot an even-par 72 and is at 6-under 210.
“I feel like I putted really well,” Mickelson said. “I felt really good with the putter. The ball-striking that was there the first two days kind of fell out and I had a tougher time putting them all together. I don’t know if I’ll have a good round tomorrow or not, but it’s close, a lot closer than it’s been.”
Rory McIlroy will start the final round in 37th place after shooting a 74 on Sunday.
“Another uneventful day,” McIlroy said. “I just haven’t really been able to get anything going this week. I feel like I’m playing well, like it’s all pretty much there, just something needs to get going. I’m driving the ball well, iron play feels good, short game feels pretty good. I putted much better today than I did the previous two days. I need a little spark to get me going.
“It’s nice that, just to get a week of competitive play, if there’s any sort of rust or if there’s anything you feel like you need to work on going into next week, it’s good to get it all out of the system this week.
