AUSSIE ACE JOHN SENDEN WINS 

VALSPAR CHAMPIONSHIP

PALM HARBOR, Florida (AP) -- Aussie John Senden, pictured above, made two big birdies on a wild and windy Sunday at Innisbrook for a 1-under 70 to win the Valspar Championship.
The one-shot victory was Senden's first on the US PGA TOUR in more than seven years and sends the 42-year-old Australian to the Masters next month.
Senden was tied for the lead when he chipped in from 70 feet on the 16th hole, and then followed that with a 20-foot birdie putt on the 17th. Equally important was a difficult putt from 40 feet that he hit to tap-in range for par on the 18th.
Kevin Na missed his birdie putt from about the same spot and shot 72 to finish one shot behind. Scott Langley, tied for the lead late in his round, had a 70 to finish third.
England's Luke Donald (70 for 280) and Justin Rose (74 for 282) finished tied fourth and tied eighth respectively.
On the same mark as Donald was the long-time leader Robert Garrigus who closed with a 75.

WIN NUMBER 5 ON NORTH ALLIANCE 

CIRCUIT FOR BRYAN FOTHERINGHAM

Bryan Fotheringham (Inverness) returned to his former home course at Forres on Saturday to notch his fifth win on the North Scottish Golfers' Alliance 2013-2014 circuit.
He has previously won at Garmouth, Inverness, Kinloss and Moray Old.
Fotheringham headed a Forres field of 87 players with a two-under-par 65 off winter tees. He birdied the second, third and fourth in an outward, three-under-par 31. 
He bogeyed the 11th and 12th but cancelled out these slips with an eagle 2 at the 16th, only to bogey the 17th in an inward one-over 34.
Playing partner Robert McKerron, a member of the host club, finished runner-up on 66 after temporarily taking the lead just after the turn.
Out in 33 to Fotheringham's 31, McKerron got a birdie 2 at the 10th to improve to two under par and when Fotheringham bogeyed the 11th and 12th, which McKerron parred, the home club man
took the lead. 
The last three holes tipped the scales in Fotheringham's favour with Bryan finished 2-4-3 to McKerron's 4-3-4, the last hole bogey costing Robert a share of the spoils

The Saltman brothers, Elliot and Lloyd, share the lead on four-under-par 68 at the halfway stage of the Jamega Tour's 36-hole competition at Quinta do Vale, Portugal.
Elliot, the elder, had seven birdies, four of them 2s at short holes but a double bogey 6 at the 15th deprived him of the outright lead.
Lloyd had five birdies and needed a par at the last to lead on his own but bogeyed it.
Anglo-Scot Scott Drummond is joint fourth on 70 and Michael Stewart from Troon is a shot behind.

CLASSY CANIZARES LEADS ALL THE 

WAY TO WIN BY FIVE IN MOROCCO

Alejandro Cañizares completed a comprehensive wire-to-wire victory at the Trophée Hassan II to end an eight-year wait for a second European Tour title.
Just as Marcel Siem did 12 months ago at Golf du Palais Royal, Cañizares led from the off with an opening 62 and completed a five-stroke win with a closing round of 70.
That gave the Spaniard a 19 under par total in Agadir, on Morocco's windy Atlantic coastline, with England’s Andy Sullivan storming home in 29 shots for a best-of-the-day 63 to claim second place.
Cañizares won on only his third European Tour start at the 2006 Russian Open, but has had to wait 199 events for win number two – during which time he has been a runner-up four times.
Victory completes an excellent six months for the 31 year old, who has not missed a cut since September. That run that now stretches to 16 tournaments and includes three other top-ten finishes.
 Cañizares would have won by a greater margin if not for a piece of bad luck on the 18th, where his approach rolled back off the green and came to rest up against a clump of turf from a divot that had not been properly replaced.
The World No.141 was told by a referee he was not allowed to move the turf and could only advance the ball a few yards with his third shot before it again rolled back down the slope almost to his feet.
From there he duffed his next pitch but at least allowed himself a wry smile before eventually getting up and down for a double-bogey 6.

Cañizares won on only his third European Tour start at the 2006 Russian Open, but has had to wait 199 events for win number two – during which time he has been a runner-up four times. 

Victory completes an impressive run of results for the 31 year old, who has not missed a cut since September. That run that now stretches to 16 tournaments, and includes three other top-ten finishes.

Cañizares, whose father José Maria won five times on The European Tour, said: “It has been a great week, this is a very special moment for me. I have to thank everybody, especially my coaches who gave me a great lesson at the start of the week, and my caddie who really handled me well today. 

“To get the win feels unbelievable. My first win was eight years ago so I’ve had to wait a long time for this, I had a few chances along the way but to finally get another one is magnificent.

“I wasn’t worried that the second win wouldn’t come, I thought if I kept working on it and kept my game on, it would come in the end. This is a great step for the rest of my career.” 

Sullivan finished with four consecutive birdies to record the highest finish of his fledgling European Tour career. 

He said: “It’s just unbelievable, I got off to such a good start on the back nine, and I managed to keep it going. The wind was getting up and there were a few holes into the wind, but that finish was just surreal. 

“Most of the putts were from within ten feet, so it’s not like I holed any bombs. It’s an unbelievable feeling to hit 63 on the last day, so I’m very, very happy.”

Sullivan’s compatriot Seve Benson birdied the 18th to claim a share of third place on 12 under with Sweden's Magnus A Carlsson, who had completed a 68 by holing from off the green on the last for par after a left-handed escape shot from the trees.

Here are the results from our Level 4 and 5 event at the Fairmont St Andrews yesterday, played over the Torrance course.

It was another extremely challenging day - a day when the wind blew and blew.

Chicago might be the “Windy City” but Scotland is definitely the “Windy Country” this year!

As a result of the conditions, it was the third time this season that none of the juniors managed to post a score within the buffer zone. However, it is to their credit that none of the boys NR'd.

The boys were all aware that this was a great learning experience. It was the same for everyone and they just had to cope with the conditions and grind out a score.

George Burns had the best score of the day with a two-over-par 74 and Brett McNaught won the U16s with a 79.

Canlubang, Manila: Canada’s Richard T Lee claimed a sensational comeback victory in the Solaire Open at the expense of home favourite Angelo Que whose title chances were dashed after one bad hole in the final round today.

Lee overcame a four-shot deficit in the fourth round with a two-under-par 69 to defeat Thailand’s Chawalit Plaphol by one shot and win his first Asian Tour title at the US$300,000 event.

Overnight leader Que was on course for a fourth Asian Tour win before disaster struck on the par-five second hole when he shot a 12 after hitting three out-of-bound tee shots at the challenging The Country Club.

Carlos Pigem of Spain shot a 69 for tied third while Steve Lewton of England, Paul Peterson of the United States and Masahiro Kawamura of Japan, whose 65 was the day’s lowest score, shared fourth.

“This win means so much to me and it opens so many doors. To be honest, I felt like I was in contention for the first three days. I shot under-par each day and I knew that if I can came out on the last day to play the way I did then I would have a chance to win. I’m glad I did just that!” said Lee, who totalled seven-under-par 277 to win US$54,000.

Lee, whose parents are South Korean, was ecstatic with his maiden victory after enjoying a solid rookie season on the Asian Tour in 2013 where he finished 32^nd on the Order of Merit. 

 However, there was a sense of disappointment as he had to watch his best friend Que walk away empty handed.

“It was a learning experience for me on the Asian Tour last year. I met some great people like Angelo Que, Unho Park and Lam Chih Bing. They are good players and I learnt a lot from them. 

"I wished Angelo luck before the final round  and told him to play his best. It was unfortunate to see what happened to him,” said the 23-year-old Lee.

Lee has endured many ups-and-downs in his career. As an amateur, he qualified for the 2007 US Open but struggled to perform due to a wrist injury. Learning from that experience, he ensured that he sealed the deal at the Solaire Open with a 25ft birdie putt on the 15^th hole.

“I was looking at the leaderboard out there. When I made birdie on 12, I told myself that if I can make one more birdie then I can make it happen. 

"The birdie on 15 was a great and solid putt. I think that birdie made me win the tournament,” he smiled.

Chawalit, a four-time Asian Tour winner, narrowly missed a huge 35-feet birdie putt on the last which he needed to make to force a play-off.

Que stayed positive even though he missed out on what he claims to be his best chance to win on the Asian Tour again. He settled for tied 21^st after shooting an 82 for a 287 total.

“I can’t take my round back. It is a lesson learnt from me. I feel bad because I had a chance to win but blew it on one hole. These things happen. That’s golf and life. 

"All you can do is look back and see what you’ve learnt and move on. I just had one bad day. Everybody has bad days. Unfortunately for me, it had to be today and on one hole!” said Que.

SAO PAULO, Brazil – Jon Curran kept his foot on the gas in Saturday’s third round of the Brasil Champions presented by HSBC and did his best to run away from any and all challengers. Curran’s 6-under 65 put him in the Web.com Tour record book (again) with an eye-popping 23-under 190 total, four in front of both Alex Cejka (63) and Ash Hall (65).
Oscar Fraustro (67) is the next closest at 15-under and eight shots back of the 27-year old who has led from the start and continues to keep everyone at arm’s length. Four others share fifth, nine back.
“I had never had a lead that big before so it was important to stay patient,” said Curran, who led by three after the weather-delayed first and second rounds were finally completed. 
“There are a lot of birdies to be had and you can’t get ahead of yourself. You’ve just got to plod along.”
Curran stumbled out of the gate and missed a four-foot birdie putt on the opening hole but then canned birdie putts of that same length on the next two holes and let everyone know the rookie wasn’t going to fold his tent on a sun-splashed Saturday.
“I’ve been calm all week,” he said. “I’ve had that a few times in my career and this is one where I feel really calm and at ease. When my thoughts do get ahead I don’t get too nervous.”
Curran, a scoreboard watcher by nature, has kept his eyes away from the electronic boards and focused on the task at hand. When the veteran Cejka charged up the board with eight birdies in 13 holes and cut the lead to one, Curran hit the accelerator and countered with birdies at 13, 16 and 17 to re-establish his cushion.
“The times I’ve seen the boards this week it hasn’t bothered me,” said the Vanderbilt grad. “Sometimes you can see it and you can get a little nervous or a little jolt of energy but every time I’ve seen it this week it doesn’t really register, which is good and where I want to be mentally.”
It helps to be up by four with only two serious challengers standing between you and your first career win.
Cejka, a longtime member of the US PGA TOUR, finally broke the glass ceiling a few weeks ago by winning the season-opening Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship, which was also plagued by bad weather and eventually shortened to 54 holes.
“I’m still on a high from Colombia. I’ve heard it from other players that once you win, or secure a (TOUR) card, whatever that is, it gets your mind a little freer. We all care but you play with less pressure,” said Cejka, whose 63 was the low round of the day. “I knew I had to go low not to lose ground. I’m playing well and having fun.”
 +Dornoch exile Jimmy Gunn did not complete his
weather-delayed second round on Saturday morning. He withdrew from the tournament, having shot a 79 in the first round, giving him no chance of making the cut which eventually fell at four-under-par for 36 holes.

NEWPORT BEACH, California (AP) -- Bernhard Langer maintained a two-stroke lead Saturday in the Champions Tour's Toshiba Classic, making four birdies in a late five-hole stretch for a 5-under 66.
Langer, the 2008 winner, had a 13-under 129 total at Newport Beach Country Club. The 56-year-old Florida-based German won the season-opening event in Hawaii in January for his 19th victory on the 50-and-over tour.
Kenny Perry and Chien Soon Lu had a share of second spot. Perry made a 15-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th for a 65, and Lu shot 66.
Fred Couples, Scott Dunlap, Esteban Toledo and Jeff Hart were 10 under.
Langer opened with a birdie, then made his first bogey of the tournament on his next hole. He added two more birdies on the front nine but also had another bogey.
On the back nine, Langer birdied Nos. 13, 14, 15 and 17. On No. 15, he hit son Jason in the gallery on his approach shot. Langer then hit a flop shot over a bunker to 10 feet and made the birdie putt.
"I was told it hit him," Langer said. "But it was more like it bounced a few times and rolled up to him. He was OK."

Perry also had a strange incident. On No. 9, he tried to cut the corner on the dogleg right and caught a palm tree about 37 yards from the tee box. Fortunately, the ball fell to the side of the tree. Perry hit a 4-iron layup, followed by a 9-iron to 4 feet and made the putt for par.
"That hole's got me," Perry said. "If I had to play a lot of holes like it, I wouldn't play much."
Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson made a 30-foot eagle putt on the last hole for 63, tied for the best round of the day. It was the first time on the Champions Tour the 64-year-old Watson has bettered his age on the tour. He was tied for 12th at 8 under.
"When you are 64, it doesn't happen that much anymore," Watson said. "I have been rolling in a lot of putts though."
