DUTCHMAN STEENKAMER IS JOOST 

IN FRONT WITH A ROUND TO GO

Dutch professional Joost Steenkamer battled through tough conditions at the La Manga Club's West Course in Spain today, carding a one-over par 73 for a one-under-par total of 144 - one ahead of the chasers.
Steenkamer's round was once again up and down with four bogeys and two birdies on the front nine, but he managed his back nine much better with only one bogey and two birdies. 
Hot on the Dutchman's heels is Spain's Carlos Rodiles whose advance on the tournament was solid throughout his second round until the 17th hole when a double bogey 7 halted the charge.
An instant birdie response on the 18th hole helped to ease the pain of 17, leaving Rodiles on even-par 145 for the tournament. 
Round 1 leader Mikael Lundberg (Sweden) wasn't able to emulate his first round at the South Course with a string of bogeys in both nines for a second round of ten-over par. 
But Saturday's round ensured he didn't end up too far off of the pace, sitting at two-over par for the tournament. 
In the Team pro-am event, PGA of Spain professional James Ferraby, and his team of Pavel Shestopalov, Vitaly Samsonov, and Alfonso Grijalva, lead after a consistent 11-under 83pt total, matched with their first round of 84pt, leaving them one ahead with 167pt.
Lundberg's individual score for the day was not as hot as round two's, but his team score was enough to hold second place at 166pt, followed by Brendan McGovern's team on 163pt.

FINISH FOR STEPHEN GALACHER

Overnight leader Patrick Reed was able to bogey the par-4 last hole and still win the WGC-Cadillac Championship by one stroke over the Blue Monster at Doral, Miami in Florida.
Reed, 23, a six-footer from Texas, had rounds of 68, 75, 69 and 72 for four-under-par 288.
Joint second on 289 were  another American, big-hitting left-hander Bubba Watson, and Welshman Jamie Donaldson who has played very well over the last three rounds. He signed off with a 70 for 285 while Watson closed with a bogey-free, four-birdie 68 for 285. 
Donaldson, 39, from Pontypridd bogeyed the last hole or he could have figured in title play-off. The Welshman had birdie the first, 10th, 14th and 17th.
His two bogeys came at the seventh and 18th where he bunkered his second.

Stephen Gallacher finally got the hang of playing the Blue Monster - helped by easier playing conditions - but all credit to the Scot for finishing with rounds of 70 and 69 -  five-under par for the final 36 holes - for an aggregate of one-over-par 289.
That earned the Bathgate man joint sixth place, a high finish that looked out of his reach after the first round. 
Tiger Woods had been expected to mount a challenge over the final day after his 66 on Saturday. Instead he could not get a single birdie and a steady flow of bogeys - at the third, fourth, sixth, 13th, 14th and 18th - gave him a y8 for 293, putting him alongside Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Francesco Molinari and Adam Scott

With the leaders still out on the course playing the finishing holes, Gallagher (pictured) and Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee had the honour  of being the joint clubhouse leaders for a spell.
Jaidee signed off with a 68.
Gallacher birdied the first, second, fifth and eight in an outward half of four-under-par 32. But he could not keep up the flow of birdies after the turn and had eight pars and a bogey at 16th. Still, a three-under 69 was a very good effort

Roos let loose to claim Kenyan title

Jake Roos hailed it as a “career-changer” after the South African emerged from a titanic battle to lift the Barclays Kenya Open title, claiming his maiden European Challenge Tour win and full exemption for the remainder of the 2014 season.

In a thrilling final day in front of massive crowds at Karen Country Club, the lead exchanged hands numerous times right until the concluding moments of the first event of the Challenge Tour season, with up to five players sharing the lead midway through the final round.

But it was Roos who emerged from the pack despite thinking his chance had gone when he bogeyed the 16^th, having claimed back to back birdies at the previous two holes.

But the 32 year old from Pretoria benefited from a double-bogey at the 17^th hole from Frenchman Adrian Bernadet, who was one shot clear at that point.

Roos found himself ahead going down the last, requiring only a par to clinch the title, and he held his nerve with two superb shots to the fringe at the par five 18^th before leaving himself with a two-putt from 15 feet to finish ten under for the tournament and claim a one shot victory.

“It’s unbelievable,” said the three-time Sunshine Tour winner. “It’s a great privilege to have been able to play in this event so to actually win it and be able to play some events in Europe is just huge for me.

“I've only really been playing on the Sunshine Tour to this point so it’s a real career-changer for me. The crowds were just amazing here and I love when you have so many people out watching.

“The vibe was awesome and I was hosted by a local family this week so it was just a great week for me, I will never forget it. It is special to win in Africa too.

“I felt good all day and I've been playing really nicely lately. I made a bogey at 16 and I thought I was a shot behind. Then I didn’t hit a great approach shot on the 17^th and I thought it was a real missed chance.

“But then coming up 18 I suddenly realised I was ahead again so it was just a blessing that it worked out like that. At the end of the day you just have to focus on your own game no matter what so I'm just very grateful that it went my way.

“I will have to completely rearrange my year. I was planning most of my year in South Africa so it’s really exciting for me and I'm really looking forward to it.”

Three players – Bernadet, Dane Lasse Jensen and Pedro Oriol of Spain – shared second place on nine under par having all been top of the leaderboard at one point during a rollercoaster final day.

Jensen collected his second runner-up finish in his last two appearances at the Barclays Kenya Open, having lost out to Seve Benson in a play-off two years ago, but the 29 year old was keen to take the positives from the week.

“At the moment I have so many different emotions,” said the Copenhagen man, who signed for a two under par 70. “When you start the week obviously you are going for a win but you would take a second place.

“But how I played this week and how it all went, maybe I feel in the end that it could have been my turn this week. I was playing really well and I had the chances on the back nine but maybe the next event will be mine. I'm definitely playing well.”

Bernadet, meanwhile, was left ruing a crucial double bogey as he also carded a 70, but he was philosophical about it and was happy to record the best finish of his Challenge Tour career.

“I played well the whole week,” said the 29 year old. “I missed very few shots during the whole tournament but I struggled on the greens.

“When I moved to 11 under there was a lot of pressure and I was trying to relax. I was nervous all day really but I missed one shot on 17, it was a flying lie from the rough and I tried to do something big and made a double. That’s golf. I'm happy to finish second and there are lots of positives.”

Oriol, who played alongside Roos and posted a one under 71, was also happy to have earned the best result of his career and the 27 year old is looking forward to pushing on this season.

“I played really good but Jake played really well and he deserved it,” said the Madrid man. “I made a big mistake on the par five third and made a bogey there but I made no bogeys from there and did my job. I'm really looking forward to the year now. I'm in a great position and I'm feeling very confident now.”

ANDREW McARTHUR MAKES TOP 20

Andrew McArthur, the only Scot to survive, the halfway cut, finished joint 17th in The Barclays Kenya Open at Nairobi today.
The former Scottish amateur champion from Windyhill GC, Glasgow shot rounds of 71, 68, 73 and 72 for four-under-par 284.
He earned 2,500 Euros.
In his final round, he birdied the second, 17th and 18th, offset by bogeys at the fourth, 14th and 16th.

MERCHISTON BOYS BEAT LOTHIAN 

SELECT IN A GALE at KINGS ACRE

Merchiston Golf Academy scored a very good win over a powerful Lothians Select at Kingsacre on Saturday when gale-force winds forced the organisers to play the ties over nine holes.
Merchiston won 5-3, a victory described by coach Alan Murdoch as "fantastic."
"This was an excellent exercise and a great learning experience for our boys. It really shows me they are developing as golfers, improving their skills and becoming all-round competitors," said Murdoch.
Wins from  Charlie Yuille , Andrew White , Leonard Walters , Kayau Siu and young Rory Thain gave Merchiston overall victory against a Lothian team containing three scratch players.

Former Scotland international Bryan Fotheringham (Inverness) notched his fourth win of the North Scottish Golfers' Alliance 2013-2014 season with a five-under-par 66 at the Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth on Saturday.

Fotheringham (pictured)  won by three shots from Jeff Wright (Forres).
Fotheringham and Wright both had eagle 3s at the long 17th. 

Bryan also had birdies at the first, fifth, 10th and 17th, offset by a solitary bogey at the 12th.

Wright had birdies at the ninth and 10th but bogeys at the fifth and 11th.
