DORNOCH MAN HAS LOST HIS FORM ON WEB.COM TOUR

GUNN MISFIRES WITH A 76 IN CHILE

Jimmy Gunn from Dornoch has not made a good start to the Web.com Tour event - the Chile Classic, at the Price of Wales Country Club, Santiago.
Gunn, one of the early starters when conditions were reckoned to be easier than those for later in the day when a wind got up, returned a four-over-par 76, which was 12 strokes off the lead in jt 130th place in a field of 144 at the end of the day.
The Highland exile, who now lives at Scottsdale, Arizona, came to grief early in the round.
He had a double bogey 7 at the long third followed by a bogey 4 at the short fourth.
He got what was to prove to be his only birdie, a 4 at the long ninth.
But Gunn frittered away two more shots to par with bogeys at the 12th and 16th.
The odds are long against him beating the halfway cut.

 THREE SHARE LEAD WITH 64s

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
SANTIAGO, Chile – South Africa's Garth Mulroy, Mexico’s Sebastian Vazquez and Sweden's Henrik Norlander all posted 8-under 64s and share the first-round lead at the Chile Classic, the second stop on the 2014 Web.com Tour schedule.
Canada's Byron Smith's round of 65 is good for solo fourth at the Prince of Wales Country Club course in Santiago, while Jorge Fernandez-Valdes of Argentina and Roger Sloan, another Canadian, are tied for fifth place, two back of the leaders.
Nine more players are knotted at 5-under 67, including Andrew Putnam and Santiago native Nicolas Geyger. Carlos Sainz Jr., of Illinois was the only afternoon starter to join the group and that was courtesy of a late run that saw him birdie Nos. 6 and 7 and then double-eagle the par-5, 9th to close his day.
Fourteen of the top 15 posted scores came from the morning wave Thursday as afternoon winds picked up and made the already firm and fast layout a little tougher to handle.
“You don’t have to hit it far but you have to hit it straight,” said Mulroy, who saw the course for the first time on Tuesday.
“You have to put the tee shot in the fairway and in certain positions. I hit only four drivers all day and one of those was a bit of a gamble.”
The 64 is a nice start for the Mulroy, who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, but focused most of his time last year on the European Tour where he made 14 cuts in 17 starts and had a pair of top-10 finishes to wind up No. 51 on the Order of Merit.
“I played as few as I could in the States while still trying to get into the final four,” he said. “I didn’t play enough to get into those four and the ones I did play in, I didn’t play very well.
"A lot depends on these two weeks for me. If I play well here then I may shift my attention to this Tour this year.”
While Mulroy has a choice of which Tour he might use as an avenue back to the US PGA Tour in 2015, Vazquez and Norlander will use their rookie campaigns on this Tour as possible springboards.
Vazquez tied for 57th at last year’s Puerto Rico Open in his only career TOUR start while Norlander, a 2011 Augusta State grad, made 13 cuts in 22 starts on the TOUR as a rookie last year but wound up No. 159 on the FedExCup points list.
Vazquez, 23, started slowly and turned the front side in just one-under before hitting the accelerator on the back with a 7-under 29.
“I was hitting the ball well on the front nine but the putts didn’t go in,” he said. “I kept pretty calm and the second nine was very good.”
It was good because he stuffed his irons close – the longest of five birdie putts made was only 12 feet – and watched as his knock-down, 7-iron from under the trees at No. 17 eventually found the cup for an eagle-2.
“I pushed my first shot and was in between the trees,” he said. “I punched it under the branches from 112 yards. It was just a low one that isn’t supposed to go in. Sometimes you get some good luck.”
• Thursday weather: Mostly sunny all day. Winds were calm in the morning and then S 10-15 mph in the afternoon. High of 86.
• The course record at the Prince of Wales Country Club is 11-under 61, set by 2013 tournament champion Kevin Kisner in the third round a year ago.

Molinari heads European challenge in Miami

WGC-Cadillac Champ_h_rgb

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Francesco Molinari is part of a five-way tie for the lead after a weather-affected opening day at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
The Italian was three under par through 13 holes of his first round to sit alongside American quartet Jason Dufner, Harris English, Hunter Mahan and Patrick Reed at the top of the leaderboard.

US PGA Champion Dufner led for most of the day after racing to five under par at the re-designed Blue Monster at Trump National Doral, before the first round was suspended by high winds and the threat of a tornado.

After a delay of two hours and 25 minutes, the US Ryder Cup star carded his first bogey of the day at the second – his 11th – after missing an eight foot par putt shortly after the resumption of play.

And moments before fading light brought the day’s action to a halt, Dufner missed from a similar length at the seventh to slip to three under.

English was one of only a handful of players to complete their rounds, holing a birdie putt across the ninth green in near darkness to complete a 69 for the clubhouse lead.

Meanwhile, Molinari birdied the first and seventh on the way out, and then got up and down from short of the green at the par five 12th to reach three under par.

“We only played a few holes after the restart but overall it was a pretty good start for me,” said Molinari.

“I felt good about my game coming into the tournament, but it’s early in this tournament and we’ve only played 13 holes.

“I’m happy with the start. I made three birdies and no bogeys, which is good on a golf course this tough.

“I’m really happy but it is very early to be too happy. With the wind today anything under par was good.

“It’s not an easy golf course anyway but the wind was making it harder too for everyone.

“It’s never easy coming off. It looked like we weren’t going to be out for too long so I tried to play a bit safer and consolidate what I had.”

Former World Number Ones Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer had all made their way to three under on the opening day, but had slipped to one under, level par and three over respectively at the toughened Doral venue.

After losing in a play-off at last week’s Honda Classic, McIlroy was satisfied with his response, carding five birdies and four bogeys.

“I said I’d be happy with anything under par from this round and I’m still on course for that,” he said. “I’m happy with the way I played and I’d like to get something in the 60s.

“I played pretty good. It was tough out there though with the wind and the firm greens with the moisture on top. It was really skidding. So it was hard when we got back out to control the distance.

“You had to guess a little how much the ball would skip forward. I’ll get back out in the morning and play the last three and a half holes without as much wind and with better conditions.”

The players will resume their first round at 8.45am local time on Friday.
Australian Jason Day, one of the golfers of the year so far, has withdrawn with a thumb injury.

McCREADIE SHARES LANARK POT

WITH YOUNG ASSISTANT GALLAGHER

Buchanan Castle's Jordan McCreadie continued his winning streak at West of Scotland Alliance competitions although he had to share the pot with Jordan Gallagher, the young Douglas Park assistant, at the Lanark Golf Club fixture this week.
Both ended on two-over-par 72, a shot ahead of pros David Orr (Mearns Castle) and Chris Currie (Caldwell) and young Williamwood amateur George Burns.
A field of 62 players,  even with the threat of rain (which did not appear), enjoyed the test set by the Lanark course. One comment praised the condition of the fairways in particular as being better than most of the coastal courses at this time of the year.

Next meeting is at Falkirk Tryst GC on Wednesday, March 12.

SCOTLAND SHARING SECOND PLACE AT SOTOGRANDE

BLAIRGOWRIE BOY BRADLEY PLAYING

MAJOR ROLE FOR SCOTS IN SPAIN

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Blairgowrie's Bradley Neil repeated his opening, one-under-par 71 to share the individual lead on 142 at the end of the second day in the European Nations Cup 72-hole tournament at Sotogrande on Spain's Costa del Sol.

The Scottish boys' match-play champion, pictured, is playing a major part in keeping Scotland in the team picture.
They are sharing second place with hosts Spain on 436 at the halfway point, trailing only Italy (432).
Ireland (444) are lying seventh and England (452) joint eighth.
Neil's 71 and the same score from Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) plus a 73 from Dollar's Scott Borrowman were Scotland's counting second-round scores. Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) had a non-counting 75.
Neil shares the individual lead with Spain's Mario Galiano Aguilar who stepped up from a first-day 67 to a 67 for 142.
England's Ryan Evans (74-70) is in third place.
McDonald is joint ninth on 146 (74-71), Robertson jt 32 on 150 (75-75)
and Borrowman is sharing 43rd place on 153 (80-73).
Scotland and Ireland did not enter teams in the women's event which is led by England's 17-year-old Annabel Dimmock (Wentworth) who also heads the individual table.

CHALLENGE TOUR TEES OFF 2014 CAMPAIGN

Velasco continues Spain’s reign in Kenya
Alvaro Velasco is hoping to make it two Spanish
winners in as many years at the Barclays Kenya
Open after the former Challenge Tour Number
One steamed into the first round lead at Karen
Country Club, Nairobi, courtesy of a six under par 66.
Velasco watched on in delight at the Nairobi venue
last year when his close friend and fellow
Catalonian Jordi Garcia Pinto claimed his maiden
victory, and the 32 year old has admitted it proved
an inspiration ahead of this week’s edition of one
of the Challenge Tour’s longest-running events.
Velasco was certainly in inspired form in the African sun, although his start to the first event of the season was a turbulent one, opening with a bogey at the tenth hole before following that with a birdie at the 11th, a bogey at the 12th and another birdie at the 13th.
He steadied the ship, however, and picked up another shot at the 17th the reach to turn in one under par before embarking on a stunning second nine which began with three consecutive birdies and was topped off by back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth.
“It was a great round to start the season with,” said the Barcelona man. “It wasn’t easy, with the wind and the way the greens are getting firmer but I played pretty solid tee to green and my putter was working really nicely.
“I've had a few months off and that was very good for me, to get over last season and get ready for the new season. I have been practicing very well at home and I was very motivated to start competing again and this is a good week to start with.”
Velasco has not won since the crowning season of his career, when he claimed two titles en route to finishing top of the 2010 Challenge Tour Rankings – ahead of Thorbjørn Olesen and Bernd Wiesberger among others – and he will be hoping the experience gained from those victories, as well as the memories of Garcia Pinto’s triumph here last season, will help him end that wait this week.
“It was very inspiring for all the Spanish players to see Jordi win here last year so we are trying to follow in his footsteps and have another Spanish win,” he said. “It would be very special.
“It’s about four years since my last victory so I am working on it and hopefully this year some wins will come. I need to keep focussed on my game, get ready to compete and stay at my best and then the wins will come if I do the right things.
“The experience of winning helps and for me it feels nice to be at the top of the leaderboard. It means you are playing well and doing things properly so I cannot wait to be in that position come the end of a tournament again.”
Lasse Jensen, meanwhile, believes that he has some “unfinished business” at this event having been beaten in a play-off by Seve Benson at Muthaiga Golf Club, also in Nairobi, two years ago, and the Dane got off to a strong start as he carded a five under par 67 to share second place with South African Haydn Porteous.
Former US Amateur Champion Byeong-hun An was on his own in fourth place after the Korean posted a four under par 68, while there were 13 players – including former Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson – a shot further back on three under.

NO MORE ANNOUNCEMENTS BY IRISHMAN UNTIL AFTER SEPTEMBER 2

Des Smyth, Paul McGinley and Sam Torrance with the Ryder Cup at today's Press Conference in Dublin.
McGINLEY NAMES TORRANCE AND

SMYTH AS RYDER CUP VICE-CAPTAINS

NEWS RELEASE
Paul McGinley, the European captain for The 2014 Ryder Cup, has named Ireland’s Des Smyth and Sam Torrance of Scotland as his first two vice- captains for the three-day contest against the United States at Gleneagles this September.

The duo will bring vital Ryder Cup experience to the European team room; Torrance having played in eight consecutive matches from 1981 to 1995, memorably holing the winning putt at The Belfry in 1985, one of three winning teams he was a part of.
It is a venue which continued to have particular resonance for the Scot when, 17 years later, he assumed the role of European captain there and led his charges to an emotional 15 ½ - 12 ½ triumph.

Smyth, meanwhile, played in the biennial contest in 1979 and 1981, as well as being vice-captain to Ian Woosnam at The K Club in 2006 where Europe recorded their record home victory of 18 ½ - 9 ½.

As well as being confirmed as a vice-captain for The 2014 Ryder Cup, Smyth was today also confirmed as the vice-captain to Miguel Angel Jiménez for the upcoming inaugural staging of the EurAsia Cup between Europe and Asia, which will be played at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Malaysia later this month.

The move continues the consistency of selection favoured by McGinley, begun when he named Torrance as one of the captains for last year’s Seve Trophy contest in France.
It will also allow Smyth the opportunity of working once again with not only experienced Ryder Cup campaigners, but also the exciting young European talent at the disposal of Jiménez in Kuala Lumpur.

McGinley said: “I am delighted to officially unveil Des and Sam as two of my  vice-captains for The Ryder Cup. As well as being good friends, they are two guys that I greatly admire, both personally and professionally, and I know they will be vital assets to me in Scotland in September.

“They were the first two people I had in mind for this role when I was appointed captain and, since then, I have talked to a lot of the experienced European players about having them as part of the team and, to a man, they have been very supportive of the idea.

“Des took me under his wing when I was a young rookie on Tour and he gave me tremendous advice which was not only valuable then but has continued to ring true for me throughout my professional career.
"His views and ideas about The Ryder Cup particularly have consistently proved to be spot on and I really enjoyed working with him as a vice-captain in 2006 when I was a player.

“Sam is a man who has probably had the most influence on me in terms of playing team golf in my career. Being my first captain in The Ryder Cup in 2002, I learned a huge amount from him and have continued to do so over the years.
"Since those early days, our relationship has grown to see us become firm friends and, living not far apart, we see a lot of each other socially as well.”

As a player, Torrance’s European Tour trophy haul stands at 21 in the 22 years between 1976 and 1998 and he still holds the record of the most appearances in history on The European Tour at 706.

He finished second in the Order of Merit on two occasions – behind Bernhard Langer in 1984 and Colin Montgomerie in 1995 – but put that statistic right when he joined the European Senior Tour, winning the John Jacobs Trophy for topping the Money List three times - 2005, 2006 and 2009, achievements helped by 11 Senior Tour victories.

Torrance said: “Everyone knows how much The Ryder Cup has meant to me over my career so I am absolutely delighted to be involved once again. "Paul was a special part of my team at The Belfry in 2002 and he knows I will do everything possible to help him and the team at Gleneagles in September.”

Smyth captured eight titles on The European Tour including the 2001 Madeira Island Open which, at the time, made him the oldest winner in Tour history at the age of 48 years and 34 days, a record which stood for 11 years until it was eventually overtaken by Miguel Angel Jiménez’s victory in the 2012 Hong Kong Open.

The Irishman’s thirst for silverware continued in the ranks of the European Senior Tour where, to date, he has captured five titles, the last of these being at the 2012 Travis Perkins Senior Masters at Woburn, a venue where he also claimed the title in 2010.

Smyth said: “I was thrilled when Paul contacted me and asked me to be one of his  vice-captains at Gleneagles – there was no hesitation for me in saying ‘yes’. I relished the opportunity to be a  vice-captain at The K Club in 2006 and I look forward to playing a positive role once again in supporting Paul and the team.”

Both Ryder Cup teams now have two vice- captains in place, United States captain Tom Watson having selected Ray Floyd last month in addition to Andy North who was named last year. However,  captain McGinley revealed that he will be making no further announcements in that respect until after Tuesday, September 2 when the full European team for The 2014 Ryder Cup is known.
