For the second day in a row, Florida-based Scot Russell Knox has outscored Honda Classic leader Rory McIlroy.

The Ulsterman leads by two strokes after the third round with a 54-hole tally of 12-under-par 198 over the par 70 course at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Lying second on 200 is American  Russell Henley with 64-68-68 for 200.
Then comes the Pride of Scotland, Inverness-born Knox (pictured above) with scores of 70, 63 and 68 for 201 - three shots off the pace with 18 holes to play on Sunday.

Since blowing a 54-hole lead at the 2011 Masters, Rory McIlroy has turned his last three 54-hole leads on the US PGA TOUR into victories. (Franklin/Getty Images)

• PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida -- Two years ago, Rory McIlroy won The Honda Classic to reach No. 1 in the world.
  Sunday, he’ll have a chance to win again, this time to end an 18-month winless drought on the US PGA Tour following the worst season of his young career.
  McIlroy shot a 1-under 69 Saturday at PGA National to take a two-shot lead over Russell Henley.
  Russell Knox is another stroke back at 9 under, while Jhonattan Vegas is alone in fourth at 8 under. Four others, including Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald, are tied for fifth at 7 under.
  Since the 2011 Masters, McIlroy has turned all three of his previous 54-hole leads into wins.
  “Definitely not a coincidence,” he said. “I learned a lot that day. I learned how not to protect a 54-hole lead. I went out there being very protective, very cautious.
  “I learned a lot from it and that's the reason that every 54-hole lead that I've had since I've been able to close the deal. Hopefully I can keep that run going tomorrow.”
  He has also learned plenty since his last trip here.
  A year and a day removed from walking off PGA National in the middle of his second round in frustration and later citing mental fatigue, McIlroy this time showed patience and poise on a breezy and difficult afternoon.
  This was never more evident than on the par-3 seventh, where he badly pulled his tee shot long and left and was forced to take a drop. He managed to make only a bogey, though, after canning a 10-footer for a 4. He called it one of the best up-and-downs he has ever had.
  He made two other bogeys, missing a 10-footer to save par on No. 6 and another from 5 feet on the 14th, but he offset them with four birdies.
  Henley, meanwhile, didn’t need his putter on 14. He holed out for eagle from 150 yards.

  Sandwiched around it were birdies on No. 12 and another on 17, where he rolled in a 50-footer from just off the green.
  Henley has just two top 10s in 32 starts on TOUR since winning the Sony Open in Hawaii last year but is looking forward to Sunday’s opportunity.
  “I'm trying not to pay attention to what Rory is doing," Henley said. "He's playing great and he's been in this situation a little bit more than me. But I still have a lot of confidence."
  THE STOCKTON EFFECT
  McIlroy isn’t the only one who has benefited from some recent sessions with putting guru Dave Stockton.
  Jhonattan Vegas began working with Stockton last October and December, then again in Phoenix and L.A. this year. He had Vegas change the type of grip on his putter and got him to roll the ball rather than hit at it.
  “Small stuff,” Stockton said.
  Big result.
  Vegas took just 24 putts Saturday -- including 12 one-putts -- on his way to seven birdies and a 66 to get to 8 under and within four shots of the lead.
  Last week in Arizona, Stockton helped McIlroy’s right hand from getting too underneath on his grip, which was making the putter go up as soon as he hit it.
  “(The change) lets the putter go down the line easier and (it) can stay lower to the ground,” McIlroy said.
  Through three rounds, McIlroy has taken just 78 putts -- tied for second-fewest in the field.
  TIGER HAS BEST DAY OF YEAR
  Tiger Woods is seven shots off the lead going into the final round but his 65 Saturday was if nothing else a step in the right direction.
  It was his lowest score on the US PGA Tour in seven months, and his ball-striking and putting were much improved from his first two days at PGA National.
  "I didn't hit the ball very well (Friday); just kind of grinded it out," Woods said. "Today I struck the ball well and made some putts."
  Despite finding fewer than half his fairways, he hit 11 greens in regulation and took only 23 putts, his fewest of the week by two.
  "I just felt like I had good feel today," Woods said.
  His seven birdies were also the most he has had in a round all year.
  Two years ago here, Woods entered the final round nine shots off the lead before charging into contention with a 62. He would eventually finish two back of McIlroy.

  SECONDARY CUT
  With more than 78 players making the cut at PGA National, a secondary cut was made to the low 70 and ties on Saturday.
  Perhaps the most surprising name on the wrong side of that number was William McGirt.
  He started the day in a tie for sixth just five shots back. After a 78 that included five bogeys and a quadruple bogey, he was headed home.
  McGirt needed to birdie the par-5 18th to stick around for Sunday but hit his second shot into a bunker and missed the green left on his third before getting up and down for par.
  He wasn’t the only player whose week was surprisingly cut short.
  Brice Garnett and Jamie Lovemark were both tied for 23rd after playing their first two days in 3 under. They both shot 76 on Saturday.

Very few home players have won the Spanish men's international amateur championship - England have dominated it - in recent years so the pressure will be on Daniel Berna Maz (Spain) when he tees it up in Sunday's 36-hole final against Austria's Robin Goger at La Reserva Golf Club, Sotogrande.
Maz was the 24th of the 32 match-play qualifiers; Goger the 24th.
In this afternoon's semi-finals, Goger beat the No 2 seed Enrico di Nitto (Taly) by 3 and 2.
Maz beat the No 4 seed, fellow Spaniard Ivan Cantero Gutierrez by a comfortable 7 and 6 margin.

Ross Fisher will take a five-stroke lead into the final round of the Tshwane Open in South Africa as he looks to secure a first European Tour title for four years.
A member of Europe’s triumphant Ryder Cup team in 2010, the 33 year old from Ascot, Berkshire carded a five-under-par 67 at Copperleaf Golf and Country Estate to reach 18 under for the week.
Fisher was just one shot ahead at the halfway stage, but leads Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey by five strokes after a round containing seven birdies and two bogeys.
Simon Dyson and Spain's Carlos del Moral are a shot further back on 12 under, with Fisher’s team-mate from The Celtic Manor Resort Edoardo Molinari in a seven-strong group another stroke adrift.
"I feel like I'm playing as good as I ever have, probably similar to when I was contending in Majors and getting myself into the Ryder Cup team,” said Fisher.
“If I were to win here it would be a massive confidence boost and a step in the right direction. My primary goal is to get back in the top 50 [of the Official World Golf Ranking] - I've been there before and I feel like I belong there.
"I got to 17 in the world because of my Major performances, but like a few other guys I had a big comedown after the Ryder Cup having achieved the second pinnacle of golf outside of winning a Major and so early in my career. Maybe I suffered a bit from Ryder Cupitis, as I called it.
"You see guys like Henrik Stenson who got to the top of the game, disappeared, came back, disappeared, and now he's back where he belongs.
“You see guys like that come through adversity, drift off and come back. Lee Westwood is another one - I wouldn't say my slump was anywhere near as drastic as theirs, but I've missed being in the top 50 and playing in the Majors and that's where I want to be. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction for me.”
Fisher had an-up-and-down outward nine, starting with a bogey at the first before birdies at the second and third - both thanks to putts of around 25 feet.
He scrambled a par on the fourth after finding a bunker off the tee, but paid the price for finding more sand on the par three fifth, missing from four feet for par.
That seemed to galvanise the World Number 82, who almost holed his approach to the sixth as the ball stopped inches from the cup before giving himself another formality of a birdie putt from two feet at the next.
Another birdie from 12 feet on the ninth took him to the turn in 33, and two more excellent iron shots on the 13th and 16th gave Fisher further birdies and put him in pole position for a fifth European Tour title, his last coming in the Irish Open in 2010.
"I want to win this by a couple of shots,” he added. “It would be nice to win in a good fashion because I feel like the game is good enough to win by a good number of strokes.
“I want to go out there and shoot a low number and somebody's going to have to come out and shoot a ridiculous score to catch me."
Hoey had carded seven birdies in a row during his second round of 65, one off The European Tour record, but was unable to repeat such heroics on Saturday.
The five-time European Tour winner carded six birdies and three bogeys in his 69 and will partner Fisher in the final group on Sunday.
Dyson had looked set to join Hoey on 13 under but bogeyed the last after a poor approach and had to settle for a 71 that was hed by playing partner Del Moral, winner of the Qualifying School last November.

New Delhi: India’s Rashid Khan claimed a play-off victory over Bangladeshi Siddikur Rahman at the SAIL-SBI Open with a birdie on the first extra hole on Saturday.

The 23-year-old prospect completed a memorable wire-to-wire victory at his home course, the Delhi Golf Club, which also atoned for his play-off defeat at the same event a year ago by countryman Anirban Lahiri.

Khan’s maiden Asian Tour victory was worth US$54,000 and he was mobbed by the crowds after tapping in his birdie on the par five 18^th hole as Siddikur could only make par in the season-opening US$300,000 event.

Bernard Gallacher Honoured with Lifetime 

Achievement Accolade at Scottish Golf Awards

Former Ryder Cup Bernard Gallacher OBE was last night honoured with a Lifetime Achievement honour at the 2014 Scottish Golf Awards, teeing off the nation’s historic Ryder Cup year in fitting style.

During a glittering evening at the Hilton Glasgow before a sell-out audience of 650 guests, Gallacher enjoyed a standing ovation before collecting the final award of the night from his former Ryder Cup team-mate and two-time Major winner Sandy Lyle.

Having endured health problems last August after he suffered a cardiac arrest while attending a dinner in Aberdeen, the 65-year-old enjoyed a night to savour in the company of family and friends and Scottish sporting stars – including the Men’s Team GB curlers after their Sochi success.

Gallacher was involved in every Ryder Cup, in some capacity, from 1969 to 1995. He played on eight teams, was an assistant three times and was captain on three occasions, latterly leading the European team to victory at Oak Hill in 1995.

The Bathgate stalwart enjoyed an illustrious career on the European Tour, with 22 professional wins, finishing in the top 10 on the European Tour Order of Merit five times between 1972 and 1982.

Gallacher, who was also a Scotland international in his amateur days and won the 1967 Scottish Stroke Play Championship, said: “It was a hugely enjoyable night at the 2014 Scottish Golf Awards at the Hilton Glasgow.

“It was an honour to receive the award in front of Scotland’s golf fans and several members of my family. I’m also privileged to follow in the footsteps of past winners of the award, Sandy Lyle, Sam Torrance, Paul Lawrie and Colin Montgomerie.

“I’m lucky to have enjoyed a wonderful career, with the Ryder Cup obviously among my highlights. I played in the first Ryder Cup in Scotland in 1973 at Muirfield and, like all golf fans, I'm looking forward to it coming back for what will be a fantastic contest at Gleneagles this year.

“Well done to all the award winners and thank you to the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association for organising a wonderful evening.”

The annual showpiece event, jointly-organised by the SGU and SLGA, raised thousands of pounds for the new Scottish Golf Charitable Trust, which supports junior golf, education and environmental best practice, while all proceeds from the Jewson Long Putt Challenge went to Gallacher’s defibrillator campaign. 

Together with the PGA and Arrhythmia Alliance, he is campaigning for the defibrillator machine that saved his life last year to be made widely available at golf courses throughout Britain.

On a night to celebrate Scottish golf at all levels, looking back to the successes of 2013 and looking ahead to the Ryder Cup in September, Gallacher was joined by his fellow Ryder Cup Scots Lyle, Andrew Coltart, Harry Bannerman and Norman Wood for an on-stage Q&A with awards co-hosts Dougie Donnelly and Caroline Henderson. 

The quintet were reacquainted with the Ryder Cup, while the Claret Jug, Solheim Cup, Dubai Desert Classic trophy – retained recently by Bernard’s nephew Stephen – and British Boys silverware, won by Bearsden’s Ewen Ferguson, were also on show for the assembled guests.

Other famous personalities from golf who gathered included Craig Lee, who enjoyed his best season on the European Tour last season, former Solheim Cup player Janice Moodie and GB Golf Team Leader Jamie Spence.

Fresh from their superb silver medal, the Team GB Men’s Curling team were also in attendance, led by their skipper David Murdoch. Former Scotland and Rangers manager Walter Smith was among those representing the football world, while two of Scotland’s 1984 Grand Slam rugby heroes, Euan Kennedy and John Beattie, also took their seats. 

A number of Scotland’s young amateurs were also present, with Glencruitten’s Robert MacIntyre the third recipient of the Adam Hunter Award, created following the death in 2011 of the ex-European Tour player and coach.

Solheim Cup star and Scottish Open champion Catriona Matthew was declared the Player of the Year, with her husband and part-time caddy, Graeme, and Moodie picking up her accolade. 

Phil Mickelson’s superb title-winning chip in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open play-off at Castle Stuart last summer earned the Shot of the Year, with the popular American recording a special thank you message for his Scottish fans. The University of Stirling, who defended their European title last year, were named the Team of the Year.

The awards also recognised the efforts of those involved at the grass roots level of the game, with the RBS Volunteer of the Year award going to Liz Taylor from Prestonfield, while Highland club Fortrose & Rosemarkie triumphed in the RBS Junior Club of the Year.

LEADS BY TWO AFTER THIRD ROUND COMPLETED

KHAN CAN WIN SAIL OPEN IN INDIA

New Delhi: Rashid Khan of India completed his third round in three-under-par 69 for a two-shot lead over Bangladeshi Siddikur Rahman at the SAIL-SBI Open on Saturday morning.
The 23-year-old Khan, chasing a first Asian Tour victory, played his remaining 10 holes in four under at the Delhi Golf Club and holds the lead on 17-under-par in the US$300,000 Asian Tour event, which is the first of the 2014 season.
Siddikur birdied his closing two holes and holed out for a lucky eagle on 14 to lie in second place while two-time champion Anirban Lahiri of India and Martin Rominger of Switzerland share third place, six shots off the pace.
The fourth and final round is currently in progress but officials have announced that if the round cannot be completed by today due to weather, then the 54-hole score will stand as the final results.
Khan was delighted he bounced back from yesterday’s lacklustre display where he was one-over through seven holes when play was suspended due to inclement weather.
“It was so much better. I told you yesterday that it was good we stopped playing as I wasn’t playing well. I finished my par on eight and next hole, hit a good drive and nine iron to a few inches. That was a good start for me. I really picked up and shot another three birdies on the back nine.
“I was working on the same thing on the range this morning. My alignment went right and I talked to Ashok Kumar (fellow pro and coach) and we checked on the alignment. Hit it really well today and hit a few good putts.
“Obviously I am going to play my game, like the last three days. Just have to focus, nothing else. I’m in a good position, two shots ahead but Siddikur is an experienced player and he knows how to catch up. I have to be focused right now and play my game. I don’t want to see anything or who’s behind me and just play my game and finish my 18 holes,” he said.

NEW ZEALAND OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP: ONE ROND TO GO

Young Aussie aims to spoil the Kiwi party

New South Welshman Dimi Papadatos will take a one shot lead into the final round of the New Zealand Open Championship.

It has been more than a decade since a Kiwi won their National Open and there are no less than seven contenders within striking distance of Papadatos in Queenstown.

Mark Brown (66) and Richard Lee (70) lead the charge only one back from Papadatos.
While Ashley Hall shot up the leaderboard with a birdie-eagle-birdie finish to be 10-under the card heading into the final round.
Rounding out the top-5 on 9-under the card are Adam Bland (SA), Craig Palmer (NZ), Gareth Paddison (NZ) and Kieran Muir (NZ).
They will be chasing a 22-year-old Papadatos who is looking for ultimate redemption in Queenstown.
The 22-year-old Papadatos, who was disqualified from the NZ PGA Championship in 2013 for hitting an incorrect ball, led for most of the third round.
He came back to the field when he failed to get up and down from the front bunker on 18 for his only bogey of the day.
Still he was rapt with his position and was looking forward to chasing his first title in just his second year on the PGA Tour of Australasia.
“I was surprisingly calm out there,” said Papadatos about his round that included six birdies and a bogey.
“I thought I would be more nervous with the big crowds. I started to get it going and I felt pretty comfortable. At first it was a bit overwhelming but you start to get used to it, you start to enjoy it more.”
Papadatos, who finished third at the ISPS Handa Perth International in October, said that experience of being in one of the final groups should help him tomorrow.
“It will be good, [to be leading] it’s what I have come here for so I am looking forward to it.”
But the thousands flocking to The Hills will be hoping for a Kiwi champion and the drought since Mahal Pearce’s victory at Royal Auckland to finally end.
Brown, who was the leading Kiwi at the last NZ Open at Clearwater in 2012, had a roller coaster back nine where he reeled off five birdies, an eagle and a double bogey on the par five 17th.
The 38-year-old is in a great position to make amends for his missed chance in 2012.
“I was sort of getting a little bit behind after the front nine I’d played really nicely but I turned it around really nicely,” said the former European Tour winner.
“I just made one bad swing on 17 and made double, but part from that, she was all pretty plain sailing.”
The Kiwi No.3 said it was hugely important to respond to that double bogey on his final hole where he made a clutch birdie putt.
“Mentally more than anything, to prove I can put a rubbish shot, rubbish hole behind me and knuckle down.”
Brown was “in the zone” on the back nine as he delivered a putting master-class.
“I putted beautifully the whole back nine, holed some good length putts too, not exactly gimmes. It’s the best I’ve felt all year. Hopefully it carries on tomorrow.”
In a different mood was Auckland professional Lee who was less than impressed with his two-under par 70.
“I am struggling with my ball striking and I would love to go out there and tear it apart,” he said.
