WIND-TAMER NELSON ONLY MAN TO BETTER PAR AT FRASERBURGH ALLIANCE FIXTURE

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Colin Nelson, the PGA professional who runs the golf shop adjacent to Hazlehead Golf Club, earned £150 for his first win on the North-east Golfers' Alliance 2013-2014 circuit at windy Fraserburgh Golf Club today.
The 69 by Nelson, pictured, was the only score in a field of 101 to better the par of 70.
Nelson birdied the first, the second, the sixth and the ninth, dropping only one shot, at the eight, in a three-under-par outward half of 32.
He chalked up his fifth and six birdies at the 10th and 11th, which was just as well as he dropped four shots to par over the closing holes - a double bogey 5 at the short 17th and bogeys at the 15th and 16th for a two-over-par inward half of 37.
Last week's amateur winner at the Montrose fixture, Newmachar's John Duff, shared second place on 70 with a former Fraserburgh amateur Kris Nicol who is now a professional in the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre stable.
Duff and Nicol also found the inward half very testing in the wind. Duff was level par for the last seven holes and Nicol one over par for the same stretch despite a 2 at the short 17th.
Oldmelrum's A Petrie declared a two-shot penalty on himself after forgetting to play a shot off a mandatory mat. That pushed his gross score up from 78 to 80 and his honesty cost him a handicap prize.
One player who did figure on the prize list - at the first attempt! - was Jack Booth of Cruden Bay. Making his first appearance on the NE Alliance circuit, Jack had a 74 and, with a handicap deduction of four shots, he won a prize with a net 70.
I wonder if this Jack Booth is related to the late Jack Booth who was the top amateur in North-east golf in the pre-television days when the Aberdeen Links championship final would draw hundreds - maybe as many as a thousand or two - spectators.
Next Wednesday's fixture at Peterhead is the last before the December break. The second half of the season starts at Inverallochy on January 8.
In case you've forgotten the venues for the second half, they are:
January: 8 Inverallochy. 15 Murcar Links. 22 Fraserburgh. 29 Craibstone.
February: 5 Peterhead. 12 Duff House Royal. 19 Insch. 26 Montrose.
March: 5 Spey Bay. 12 Buckpool (championship first round). 19 Portlethen (championship second round). 27-28 Murcar Links (foursomes match-play.-+

MICKELSON READY FOR TITLE DEFENCE AT ROYAL ABERDEEN

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR
Phil Mickelson will return to the tournament which he firmly believes provided the launch pad for his 2013 Open Championship glory when the five-time Major winner defends his Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open title at Royal Aberdeen from July 10–13, 2014.

The World Number Four sealed a mesmerising ‘Scottish double’ on his last visit to the birthplace of the game, beginning with a dramatic victory at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart and culminating in his career-defining Open success seven days later at Muirfield.

Mickelson, who beat South African Branden Grace in a play-off at Castle Stuart,  attributes that victory as one of the crucial factors in his claiming a fifth Major victory and his first Open Championship title, the latter claimed when he finished three shots clear of Sweden’s Henrik Stenson after a stunning final day display at Muirfield.

His Claret Jug victory was the third in succession by a golfer who had played in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open the week previously, following in the footsteps of Darren Clarke (2011) and Ernie Els (2012).

The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open once again takes place in the week before The Open Championship, providing the perfect links platform for anyone competing in The 143rd Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake.

Confirming his decision to defend the title at an exciting new venue in Royal Aberdeen’s established links in the north-east of Scotland, the 43 year old said he could not wait to return to a tournament he has always held close to his heart since making his debut in the event at Gleneagles in 1992.

"Winning the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open was a huge factor in my success the next week at The Open Championship,” said Mickelson.

“I was able to acclimate myself to the time change, the weather, the wind, the links conditions and all in the heat of serious competition, which itself was a big added plus.

“That helped sharpen my focus on hitting the proper shots and coming to grips with the results, good or bad. On top of that, winning gave me tremendous confidence going into The Open and confirmed my beliefs about what I was trying to do.”

Martin Gilbert, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Asset Management commented: “We are delighted that Phil has confirmed that he will defend his Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open title at Royal Aberdeen in 2014.
"He is a fantastic advocate of the event and his exceptional double-win in Inverness and Muirfield last year can only emphasise the value of playing a true links tournament in the week leading up to The Open Championship”.

A season ticket for the 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open can be purchased for £60 in advance of the tournament, a saving of £20 on admission at the gate. Adult day tickets are currently priced at £25, rising to £35 on the gate.

Concessions (60 and over) start at £40 for a season ticket and £15 for any one-day tickets if purchased in advance. Under-16s accompanied by an adult are admitted free of charge and all car parking is also free. Entrance to the Pro-Am on Wednesday is £8 in advance and £15 on the day.

BUBBA WATSON GOES ROUND PELICAN HILL IN 81 ... USING ONLY ONE CLUB

FROM THE GOLFTALK CENTRAL WEBSITE

Never one to turn down an opportunity to get creative on the golf course, Bubba Watson recently showed up to Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Beach, California, with a 20-degree hybrid in hand. The other 13 clubs, it seems, proved to be too much a burden.
Playing with just a single club and starting the round with only three balls in his pocket, the 2012 Masters champion made his way around the par-72, Tom Fazio lay-out in 81 shots, according to PGA teaching professional Tim Mitchell.
According to Mitchell, Watson told a course staffer that he enjoys the shot-making challenge provided by playing 18 holes with just a single club, perhaps evoking memories of the physics-defying wedge approach he used to claim his Masters Green Jacket last spring.
Watson's 2012 campaign led to a 69.64 scoring average, good for ninth on the US PGA Tour, although he slipped to 32nd for the 2013 season.
The southpaw's 2013-14 effort got off to a slow start, though, as he carded a 78 while presumably using all 14 clubs in the first round of the CIMB Classic in Malaysia.
Since then, though, the 35-year-old has broken 70 in six of his seven competitive rounds on Tour, tying for eighth at the WGC-HSBC Champions in his most recent start.

+What a great idea for a new pro (or even amateur) tournament ... THE ONE-CLUB CHALLENGE. Pick your own weapon and may the best man win!

AUGUSTA NATIONAL SPENDS $8.3million ON A PARKING LOT ... TO BE USED ONE WEEK OF THE YEAR

Augusta National outdoes itself once again, spends $8.3 million on a parking lot

Augusta National; the most iconic golf course, the most prestigious golf tournament, the most expensive. . . parking lot?
Yup.
News came through Tuesday that the Augusta National Golf Club has purchased an $8.3 million, 9.8-acre apartment complex in Augusta that it plans to raze and replace with a parking lot. To put that in perspective, $8.3 million is more than any US PGA Tour player made in 2013 except Tiger Woods, who won a little more than $8.5 million.

blog-augusta-parking lot-480.jpg
The move is just the latest expansion made by club chairman Billy Payne since assuming the role in 2006. Paine previously oversaw the $13 million construction of a series of cabins and corporate entertainment facilities inside the grounds.
Although that $8.3 million figure may seem startling, the rational is relatively simple. Augusta National has money to spend, and it needs more room.
"When you're landlocked and the tournament continues to improve every year and you have deep pockets, why not?" said one local real estate agent to Bloomberg News.
It's true this land may one day become the most awe-inspiring parking lot in the history of golf, but there's no escaping that for the other 51 weeks of the year, the space will sit empty. No other tournament is played at Augusta National except the first Major of the season, the Masters.
That makes us think back to an idea put forward by Geoff Shackelford last April: turn the land into a course specifically for the children of Augusta.
Just think about it. A multimillion dollar parking lot that also inspires the next generation of golfers. Only at Augusta.

WESTWOOD AND CADDIE FOSTER TEAM UP AGAIN AFTER A YEAR APART

Lee Westwood to reunite with caddie Billy Foster after nearly a year apart

Lee Westwood is to reunite with caddie Billy Foster
THE GOOD OLD DAYS - Lee Westwood with caddie Billy Foster

FROM THE SKY SPORTS.COM WEBSITE

Lee Westwood is to reunite with long-time caddie Billy Foster after nearly a year apart.
The Englishman took the difficult decision to split with Foster last November after his bagman's recovery from a freak knee ligament injury took much longer than expected.
Westwood opted to instead join forces with Zimbabwean Mike Kerr as he looked for stability heading into a season which he hoped might finally yield his first major.
In the event, despite top-10 finishes at the Masters and the Open, the 40-year-old has endured a largely frustrating season and has been unable to chalk up a victory.

Great partnership

Having slipped down to 23 in the world rankings, he has now decided to reprise his partnership with Foster in a bid to improve his fortunes in 2014.
"Everyone knows that Lee and Billy were a great partnership and it made sense now Billy is fully fit again that the partnership reforms," Westwood's agent Chubby Chandler told the Daily Telegraph.
"They laugh at the same jokes, are both very quick-witted, and Billy knows when something needs saying to Lee. And, of course, he's a great caddie."
It is understood the duo will resume their working relationship at Tiger Wood's World Challenge event in California next week.

ADAM SCOTT FAVOURITE TO WIN THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN THIS WEEK

FROM THE PGA OF AUSTRALIA WEBSITE
Just as he’s done for the last three Wednesdays, Adam Scott (pictured) spent time chatting with Australian media ahead of this week’s PGA Tour of Australasia season-ending tournament, the Emirates Australian Open.
Since arriving in Australia in late October the US Masters Champion has added the Australian PGA, Masters and World Cup titles to his resume and this week will attempt to claim what only one person has managed to achieve before him – the Australian golf Triple Crown.
That person was Robert Allenby who, in 2005, overcame American Bubba Watson to achieve the rare feat, and Scott says he’s got nothing but respect for the Victorian.
“I'll leave the sledging to the cricketers,” Scott laughed today.
“I caught up with Rob last night at the function and asked for some advice on how to go about it, but he didn't offer any up. I'm left to my own devices this week.”
“What Robert was able to do was remarkable. Greg Chalmers had a shot at it a couple of years ago. I'll be giving it my best and hopefully you can ask me Sunday night and I can tell you where I reckon it ranks.”
Despite feeling slightly fatigued Scott said his four-week back-to-back schedule has been a valuable experience delivering much more beyond the on-course results.
“Winning the PGA and the Australian Masters was the first time ever in my career I'd won back to back weeks, so I sat back after that and learned a lot.”
“I'm constantly learning and trying to figure out how to handle different and new situations that you face playing this game all the time. But it's something I'll learn.
Scott’s World Ranking also remains a hot topic on site at Royal Sydney.
Another win this week would take Scott as close to the World’s top ranking as he’s ever been however he admits that despite his outstanding month there’s still a long way to go to reach the pinnacle, and a formidable adversary in Tiger Woods.
“I'm not going to stop dreaming of it just because Tiger Woods holds the number one spot,” said Scott.
“But we all know how difficult it is to surpass him. Only a few people have done it in the last 15 years and I've got my work cut out for me the whole of next year in trying to do that.”
But for now Scott’s focus is firmly on claiming his second Emirates Australian Open title.
And no one at Royal Sydney is willing to bet against him doing just that.
