KARLSSON AND STADLER SHARE LEAD IN RAIN-HIT MEXICO TOURNAMENT

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico -- Robert Karlsson and Kevin Stadler topped the OHL Classic at Mayakoba second-round leaderboard at 12 under Friday when second-round play was suspended because of darkness.
Karlsson played 36 holes Friday, shooting an 8-under 63 in the rain-delayed first round and adding a 67 in the afternoon on Mayakoba Resort's El Camaleon course.
"I hit some good iron shots and knocked in some putts," Karlsson said. "I mean, I gave myself a whole bunch of chances and I took them, so it was great."
Stadler had rounds of 67 and 63 in a 34-hole day. He birdied five of the last seven holes in the second round, finishing about 25 minutes before play was called for the day.
"I didn't really feel like waking up at 4 again tomorrow morning," Stadler said. "Nice to be completely done with both rounds today and get a little bit of rest tonight."
Karlsson finished with a birdie on the par-4 18th after making bogeys on 16 and 17. The Swede tied for 10th on Sunday in The McGladrey Classic, playing on a sponsor exemption, to earn a spot in the field this week.
"I feel pretty happy the way I'm going," Karlsson said.
Only 29 of the 127 players were able to complete the second round. After lengthy delays Thursday, there was a 26-minute delay Friday afternoon.
More than 4 inches of rain has hit the course since Wednesday afternoon.
"Obviously, it's very wet," Karlsson said. "It's unbelievable that we're playing at all. The amount of rain that's been here the last few days, the course is in really great condition."
Because of the wet conditions, players were allowed to use preferred lies in the first two rounds.
"It played about as easy as it can play for us today," Stadler said. "With it being as soft as it is, the fairways played much wider than they typically play. No breeze today, so we kind of got let off the hook."
Rory Sabbatini and Chris Stroud were tied for second at 9 under. Sabbatini had one hole left when play was suspended, and Stroud had three to go.
Ryan Moore, Jhonattan Vegas, Pat Perez and Jay McLuen were 8 under. Moore (67) and Vegas (68) finished the round, and Perez and McLuen each had four holes to play.

Inverness-born Russell Knox had a first-round 67 but has dropped some shots on his second circuit.

SIX ROUNDS OF GOLFING TORTURE IS OVER AT PGA CATALUNYA

ALASTAIR FORSYTH AND JACK DOHERTY GAIN EURO CARDS AFTER NERVY FINISH

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Ten Scots set out on the golfing marathon that is the European Tour Final Qualifying School - and only two Jack Doherty and Alastair Forsyth finished among the top 27 who gained playing rights on the 2014 Tour.
Doherty and Forysth, seemingly in the comfort zone after five rounds in the end had to fight off last-day nerves and only just made the grade on the limit mark of nine-under-par for 108 holes.
For the two other Scots in the last-day mix over the long and testing Stadium Course (par 72) at PGA Catalunya, near Girona in north-east Spain - Andrew McArthur and Doug McGuigan - there was only disappointment that they failed by two and three shots respectively after six rounds in a pressure-cooker situation.
If the Open is so much more important than the Final Q School, why do they play it over four rounds and the Q School over six?
Doherty and Forsyth both finished on the limit qualifying mark of nine-under-par 419 to figure among the 27 who will be promoted to the top grade.
Doherty signed off with a one-under-par 71 over the Stadium Course. A double bogey 6 - his third in three days - at the ninth put him under pressure. His fourth and last birdie, at the long 12th, meant he had to cover the last six holes in no higher than one-over-par ... which he did with a bogey at the 14th and four nervy pars over the last four holes.
Forsyth's early good work in the six-round marathon stood him in good stead when the wheels came off - comparatively - with a two-over-par 74 in the final round. He had three double bogey 6s: at the fourth, ninth and 14th.
But he also had five birdies and that enabled him to stand on the 18th tee, knowing he could afford to bogey it - which he did - and still make the grade.
McArthur totalled 421 - two shots too many - and finished joint 31st from a starting field of 156. A good effort but not quite good enough. He finished with a one-under-par 71.
Clydeside-born, South Africa-based McGuigan matched the par of 72 - his highest score of the week -  on the last circuit to finish joint 37th on 422.

Moral victory for Carlos in dramatic Q-School finale
REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Carlos Del Moral romped to a five-shot victory at The European Tour’s Qualifying School Final Stage on a dramatic day of twists and turns at PGA Catalunya Resort, where 27 players from 15 countries earned their place on The 2014 Race to Dubai.
It was another stunning round over the Stadium Course, a five under par 67, which sealed glory for the Spaniard, who has now qualified from the Final Stage four times in the past six years.
While he was storming to the title, though, there was plenty more drama unfolding further down the leaderboard.
The childhood dreams of many were realised after an enthralling finale to the gruelling six-round marathon in Girona, north-eastern Spain, while others were left disappointed when the cut-mark for European Tour promotion eventually dropped at nine under par.
Of those who made the grade, there were five European Tour winners - Scot Alastair Forsyth, who endured a roller-coaster two over par round of 74 which included three double-bogeys and five birdies before making it on the mark, Swedes Mikael Lundberg and Patrik Sjöland, as well as England’s James Morrison and Estanislao Goya of Argentina.
Some of the big names to narrowly miss out included former Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson, who was two shots short, and former European Tour winners Oliver Fisher of England and Welshman Bradley Dredge, who missed by three and four shots respectively.
Ten of those who qualified will be playing their rookie seasons in the top tier of European golf next season, including a number of former amateur prodigies such as 2013 Walker Cup player Kevin Phelan of Ireland and Belgium’s Thomas Pieters, who impressed on the American collegiate circuit.
Following the recent success stories on The European Tour of Americans Peter Uihlein and Brooks Koepka, a record four USA natives also qualified, three of whom are under the age of 25.
But it was Del Moral who took the plaudits after three successive sub-68 rounds over the Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo-designed Stadium Course and he was delighted to become the first Spanish winner of the Final Stage since Carlos Rodiles in 2006.
“It feels very special to be the winner of this event,” said the 28 year old, who finished the week 26 under par. “It’s such a long week and after the year I have gone through it is a pay-off for all the hard work.
“Sometimes you feel like it’s all a waste but it is showing now and hopefully I can keep up the good work for the next few weeks in South Africa and for the 2014 season.”
Fabrizio Zanotti finished runner-up after a four under par final round of 68 left him on 21 under for the tournament while Italian Marco Crespi finished six shots further back in third place on 15 under.
Further down the leaderboard, Phelan provided one of the biggest success stories of the final round after the 22 year old, who won two out of three points at the most recent Walker Cup in September and made the cut at this year’s US Open Championship, climbed from outside the cut mark on day six to earn a rookie season on The European Tour.
He sealed his place at the top table of European golf in some style, firing a stupendous approach at the par four 18th to five feet before sinking the putt for birdie to rubber-stamp the 17th card.
The Waterford native revealed afterwards that some advice from three-time Major winner Padraig Harrington played a big part in his rapid rise from the amateur game, having been the subject of so much hype and expectation.
“I have been told a couple of times not to read anything that has been written about me,” said Phelan, the only player to have jumped from outside the cut mark on day six to claim a card. “I haven’t done that in a couple of years now so I don’t really pay any attention to expectations that are put on me, just what I put on myself.
“Harrington said it to me a while ago and my coach Mark McCumber tells me all the time. It definitely helped a lot.
“Padraig is definitely a big inspiration for me. I played a practice round with him at the US Open the first time I played it and at the Irish Open in Killarney and again at Carton House this year. He’s been very nice and very helpful and I've always looked up to him so it’s nice to get some good feedback from him. I look forward to joining him on The European Tour.”

SUPER STENSON, EIGHT-UNDER 64, HEADING FOR EURO NUMERO UNO TITLE

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Henrik Stenson took a giant stride towards being crowned European Number One with a joint best of the day eight under par 64 in the second round to lead the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.

The Swede, who is in pole position in The Race to Dubai at the final event of the season, has a grandstand finish on his mind after eight birdies in a flawless round moved him one shot ahead of Spaniard Alejandro Cañizares (67) and four clear of Australian Marcus Fraser (69) and Frenchman Victor Dubuisson (66), who won the Turkish Airlines Open by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism last week.

The two men who would win The Race to Dubai with victory on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates, Justin Rose and Graeme McDowell, were left in Stenson’s slipstream, and at seven under and four under respectively – and with the leader in such superb form – their hopes of usurping him are diminishing.

“They are chasing me as hard as they can, and I know neither of the guys are going to back down, so I’d better keep my foot down and my head down and try to keep the momentum,” said Stenson, who is aiming to become the first player to win The Race to Dubai and the FedEx Cup in the same season.

“I've got my family here and a lot of friends from living here for ten years, so it’s great support and great crowds for me out there. I'm trying my best to please them and keep them happy.

“I was playing nicely yesterday and had a lot of chances but didn't take them. Today I was playing the same, more or less.  I hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens, and gave myself opportunities. It was nice to roll a couple of putts in.”

Defending champion Rory McIlroy signed for a five under par 67 to lie at six under overall.

WESSELINGH'S GOOD START IN TAIWAN SENIOR OPEN

  REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Paul Wesselingh’s opening score of three under par 69 at the Fubon Senior Open in Taiwan has given the Englishman a fantastic opportunity to be crowned the European Senior Tour’s Number One player of 2013.
Weselingh is currently second on the Order of Merit, some €9,932 behind Number One Steen Tinning of Denmark at this, the penultimate event of the season.
But the Englishman’s excellent opening score – which places him second on the leaderboard alongside countryman Bob Cameron and one behind André Bossert of Switzerland – saw him establish a five stroke advantage over Tinning, who posted a first round of two over par 74.
With €60,000 on offer to the winner of the Fubon Senior Open, Wesselingh is hoping to close the gap or preferably overtake Tinning at the top of the Order of Merit before the John Jacobs Trophy is decided at next month’s MCB Tour Championship.
“It’s certainly an exciting finish to the season and I am absolutely loving it,” said Wesselingh, who holed out from over 50 yards for a brilliant eagle three in gusting, swirling winds at the Miramar Golf and Country Club in Taipei.
“There is a long way to go this weekend, but it is a great start for me, especially as Steen could only manage two over today. It was very tough out there but I played well and putted great and managed to put a great score together.”
Bossert was the only man to better Wesselingh as the Swiss, who is making his Senior Tour debut this week, stole four birdies in the testing conditions to make a dream start to his new career.
Lu Wen The of Taiwan is in fourth spot on two under, while Simon P Brown is joined one under by England’s Paul Eales, Scot Alan Saddington and Taiwan’s Wang Ter Chang.
Brown is another man who could still be crowned Number One for the year. Currently fourth on the Order of Merit and some €45,386 behind Tinning, he, like Wesselingh, is looking for a big weekend to chase down the ultimate prize.

TEENAGER JAZZ SAHRES LEAD IN MANILA MASTERS

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE ASIAN TOUR
Manila, November 15: Overnight leader Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand remained in prime position of becoming the second youngest professional winner on the Asian Tour after he posted a three-under-par 69 to grab a share of the second round lead with Philippines’ Angelo Que and Canada’s Richard T. Lee at the US$750,000 Resorts World Manila Masters on Friday.
The 17-year-old could follow the footsteps of South Korea’s Noh Seung-yul by winning his first title on the region’s premier Tour at a tender age if he continues to show the composure and talent that the crowd has come to take notice of over the last two days at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club.
Thailand’s Prom Meesawat signed for a flawless 67 to be bunched with Spanish rookie Carlos Pigem, England’s Chris Rodgers and Malaysia’s highest-ranked player Nicholas Fung in equal fourth place.
After shaking off the effects of flu, Jazz is now looking forward to playing his best golf during the weekend rounds.
Like any other teenager, the overnight leader just wants to adopt a carefree attitude and enjoy himself over the next 36 holes.
“I try not to think too much about winning yet as I believe the key to doing well is to have fun. I’m beginning to feel very comfortable around this golf course and I’m enjoying myself,” said Jazz, who turned professional one day before his 15th birthday at the King’s Cup in Thailand in 2010.
“I was struggling to finish my round yesterday and it was a pleasant surprise when I took the lead. I missed a couple of putts today but it was alright, I’m well now and hopefully this good run will continue,” added the Hua Hin native, who compiled a two-day total of 11-under-par 133.
Que kept the local hopes alive when he fired a 66 to remain firmly in contention for his first Asian Tour win on home soil in five years.
The three-time Asian Tour winner’s last home victory on the region’s premier Tour was in 2008 when he won his country’s National Open. And a victory at the Resorts World Manila Masters will cap a brilliant year for the 34-year-old who has enjoyed four top-five finishes so far.
The weekend cut was set a two-under with 65 players making the cut.

More than 4,000 jobs and £1billion of investment would be lost to the North-east of Scotland's economy if Donald Trump pulls the plug on his golf resort plans on the Aberdeenshire coastline at Balmedie, 12 miles north of Aberdeen, a court was told yesterday.
The Court of Session in Edinburgh heard that the US tycoon has threatened to halt the scheme, which includes a large hotel, holiday homes and a residential village, if a controversial windfarm development, clearly visible from the golf course, goes ahead off the Aberdeenshire coast.
Lawyers acting for the US property billionaire are attempting to overtun the Scottish Government's backing for the green energy poject, claiming the decision was illegal.
Mr Trump claims the ll-turbine European Offshore Wind Development Centre (EOWDC) in the North Sea, 1.25 miles off Balmedie, will spoil the view from his golf resort at Menie Estate.
Mr Trump's counsel, Gordon Steele QC, said Mr Trump has several championship golf courses around the world and his desire for the Menie Estate was to build the best in the world there.
However, if the wind esting centre went ahead, Mr Trump planned to pull the plug on the whole development.

ADAM SCOTT SHARES AUSSIE MASTERS LEAD AT HALFWAY

FROM THE GOLF CHANNEL.COM WEBSITE
By REX HOGGARD

MELBOURNE, Australia – Following three consecutive birdies to start his second round at the Australian Masters, Adam Scott cooled and finished with a 5-under 66 for a share of the lead at Royal Melbourne.
Scott, back home for the first time since becoming the first Australian to win the Masters, was tied with Nathan Holman at 9 under following his victory last week at the Australian PGA Championship.
Scott is vying to become the first player to claim the Australian Triple Crown, which includes the Open in two weeks, since Robert Allenby in 2005.
Perhaps even more concerning for the rest of the field at Royal Melbourne is how easy Scott is making it look, largely playing from the fairway and hitting 77 percent of his greens in regulation.
“It didn’t exactly have a 5-under feel to it. I just plodded along,” he said. “But I got it pretty down the line at the moment.”
