SCOTLAND, ENGLAND, IRELAND FAIL TO SHINE IN THE SPIRIT AMATEUR INTERNATIONAL

Scotland, England and Ireland finished well down the field in The Spirit International mixed amateur better-ball tournament at Whispering Pines Golf Club, Texas.

The competition was reduced to 54 holes after heavy rain wiped out any completed scores on the opening day.
Scotland (Ewan Scott, Grant Forrest, Rachael Watton and Gemma Dryburgh) finished joint 14th in a field of 20 countries for the combined team event, 25 strokes behind the winners, the United States.
Ireland (Richard Donovan, Jack Hume, Leona and Lisa Maguire) finished joint 16th while England (Nick Marsh, Paul Howard, Alexandra Peters and Meghan MacLaren) finished second last in 19th place.
In the men's team event, Scotland and England tied for 15th place, 17 shots behind the winners, the United States.
Grant Forrest and Ewan Scott had better-ball rounds of  70,  69 and 72 for Scotland.
Ireland finished 18th of 20 men's teams but did better in the women's team event in which twins Leona and Lisa Maguire finished joint ninth, six strokes behind the winners, France.
Rachael Watton and Gemma Dryburgh, with better-ball rounds of 69, 73 and 71, gained a 14th place finish for Scotland but England's Alexandra Peters and Meghan MacLaren had a disappointing three days. Their better-ball score each day was one-over-par 73 and they tied for last place.

RUSSELL TOP SCOT IN SPAIN AT END OF DAY 1 OF Q SCHOOL STAGE 2

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Raymond Russell performed best of the 13 Scots in action on Day 1 of the European Tour Qualifying School Stage 2 four-round events at four venues in Spain today (Sat).
Russell, pictured left, courtesy of Getty Images (c), is lying joint seventh at Lumine Golf and Beach Club, Tarragona after a four-under-par 67 which saw him reach the turn in four-under 31 with birdies at the second, third, fifth and eighth.
He rested on his laurels after the turn, reeling off nine straight pars.
Approximately the leading 20 players from each of the four venues will go forward to the Final Q School at PGA Catalunya from November 10 to 15.
Also at the Lumine venue, Jack Doherty is in joint 19th position after a 69. He birdied the first, third and eighth in covering the outward half in three-under 32.
Northern Open champion David Law had a 70 for a share of 27th place. A double bogey 7 at the last hole took the shine off the Aberdonian's five-birdie scorecard with halves of 32-38.
Paul Doherty is joint 52nd after a 72, two better than Elliot Saltman who is sharing 70th place at the Lumine venue
Tartan Tour regular Neil Fenwick from Dunbar shot a two-under-par 70 at El Saler Golf Club, Valencia to be sharing 11th place at that venue.
Fenwick bounced back from a double bogey 6 at the eighth to come storming home in four-under-par 32. He had five birdies in all.
Also at El Saler, Aberdour amateur Scott Crichton was in the top 20 with a 71 - two birdies, one bogey - for a share of 16th place.
Lloyd Saltman and George Murray are bracketed in 37th place on 73 while, also at El Saler, Wallace Booth and Paul Ferrier gave themselves a lot of work to do by returning 76s.
Murray birdied the fifth, seventh and 11th but bogeyed the 14th and 16th.
Saltman dropped five shots in a five-hole span early on the inward half after reaching the turn in two-under 34.
Booth bogeyed the last three holes while Ferrier had double bogey 6s at the first and eighth in 39 to the turn.
Paul McKechnie had a two-under-par 69 at Valle Romano Golf Club, Estepona. The Braid Hills man is joint 25th and is in better shape than Calum Macaulay who had a 72 for a share of 51st place.
There were no Scots in action at the fourth Spanish venue, Las Colinas G and CC, Alicante but West Linton's Welsh-born tour pro, Gareth Wright, is playing there and  he started with a two-under-par 69

Entry fee for the European Tour Q School process is £1,350, even for the players who failed to progress past Stage 1.

AGGRESSIVE McARTHUR IN WITH CHANCE AT CHALLENGE TOUR FINAL

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Andrew McArthur launched himself

into contention for European Tour

graduation and the title at the Dubai

Festival City Challenge
Tour Grand Final hosted by Al Badia

Golf Club thanks to a four under par

third round of 68, leaving him five off

the lead in tied third.

The Glaswegian knows he needs a win

or a very high finish if he is to make an

eleventh hour climb into the Challenge

Tour Rankings' top 15 and earn a place
in The 2014 Race to Dubai.

With so much at stake, McArthur decided to take a more aggressive
approach midway through the day after a slow start and it paid
dividends as he soared to a five under par back nine including a run of three birdies in a row from the 12th and followed by a
back-to-back birdie finish.

“I knew I needed something low,” said the 34 year old. “I think
I need to finish third on my own to have a chance so obviously I
need to keep trying to make birdies.

“I got off to a dodgy start and then played decent after that.
Halfway through the back nine yesterday and at the start today I
didn’t feel like I was swinging it well but then I hit a good shot at
eight and played nicely after that.

“I was being defensive on the front nine and playing away from pins
because I didn’t feel like I was swinging it well. I was just being
overcautious, then I hit one good shot and continued that.

“I don’t know if I was thinking about it too much at the start today
but I wasn’t hitting good shots.

“It will be very exciting tomorrow. I know what I need to do so I
just have to see if I can do it. There will obviously be a bit of
pressure but I need to focus on the shots and not the situation, that’s
the key, but it’s easier said than done.

“I have always looked at leaderboards. I honestly think that people
who say they don’t look at leaderboards kid themselves. I’ll see
what I can do. Hopefully I can get off to a quick start and try get in
the mix.

“At the end of the day you want to win the tournament but
obviously there’s a secondary thing for me there. But if I try
and win the tournament I've got a better chance of making my
card so that will be the goal.”

Meanwhile, Shiv Kapur is on course for a second European
Challenge Tour title and a return to The European Tour after the
Indian roared into a four shot lead in a thrilling third day.

Incredibly, the 31 year old was four shots off the lead stepping on to
the eighth tee after two early bogeys left him two over for the day,
but an eagle at the easy par five paired with a double bogey for his
playing partner and leader Andrea Pavan turned the tournament on
its head.

Suddenly, the momentum was with Kapur and he took full
advantage, carding three birdies on the way back including one at
the last to sign for a five under par 67 and move four clear of the
field on 14 under par.

The New Delhi man, however, will have no room for error as
Dutchman Wil Besseling is in second place knowing only a win will
be enough to secure his path to The European Tour.

A shot further back alongside McArthur at nine under par is
compatriot Jamie McLeary, who also needs a strong finish in Dubai
to have any chance of making the top 15.

PETER SENIOR IN THE HUNT AT US SENIORS FINALE IN SAN FRANCISCO

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
European Senior Tour winner Peter Senior remains in the hunt at the US Champions Tour’s season finale, the Charles Schwab Cup, despite being overtaken by 2012 Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex champion Fred Couples after the second round in San Francisco.
Senior, who finished tied third at this year’s Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at Royal Birkdale, was leading overnight after the opening round thanks to an eight under par 63.
While he stayed steady on day two thanks to a two under second round which included four birdies and two bogeys, Couples charged to the front and into a two shot lead after the American signed for a flawless six under par six under par round to move to 12 under for the tournament.
Senior, however, is still confident that he can claim the season-ending title. “If you play well enough, you're going to do it,” he said. “Inside me I know I'm good enough to win tournaments and I'll go out there with that on the weekend.”
Bernhard Langer, meanwhile, is five shots off the pace on seven under par after the German signed for a three under par 68.

JOHNSON DOUBLE-BOGEY FINISH GIVES POULTER, McDOWELL A CHANCE

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
A double bogey on the final hole by runaway leader Dustin Johnson allowed Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell to narrow the gap at the top of the leaderboard going into the final round of the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

Johnson, pictured, started the day at Sheshan International Golf Club with a five shot advantage following a course record 63 on Friday and that margin was intact when he headed to the par five 18th hole after ten birdies in his opening 17 holes. However, the big-hitting American found the water on the last and carded his second double bogey of the day, after twice failing to chip onto the green on the par fourth tenth hole, where he signed for a six.
That meant a round of 66 and an 18 under par total of 198 for the US Ryder Cup player, who will now take a three-stroke lead over Poulter into the final round, with 2010 US Open Champion McDowell a further shot back.
“I'm still a little mad from my double bogey on 18,” said Johnson. “But to have a three shot lead going into the last day is good, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.  I still have to play really well.  Obviously the guys that are right behind me, they are playing very well, too.  So it's still going to be a tough day tomorrow.  I’ve got to come out and make a lot of birdies.”
On a day of low scoring in China, defending champion Poulter fired a superb nine under par 63, which included five birdies in row from the third hole and an eagle three on the 14th, as he surged to 15 under par and firmly into contention to become only the second player after Tiger Woods to retain a World Golf Championships title.
“Nine under par on any golf course is a good score, and that was a good nine under par,” said Poulter. “I guess the only blemish for me, which leaves a bit of a sour taste, was three‑putting 17, and actually missing a couple of opportunities.
“As silly as it sounds when you make eight birdies and an eagle, there were putts on one, two and eight that I could have made and a few others.”
McDowell will also be looking to put pressure on Johnson in the final round after posting six birdies in his opening 14 holes and then chipping in from the greenside bunker for an eagle on the 16th hole in his flawless eight under par round of 64.
“Bizarrely, I really haven't got it going on the greens yet this week,” he said. “I made a couple today, and it was bit of a bonus with the bunker shot on 16.  I haven't holed a lot of putts, though, so hopefully I'm saving it for tomorrow.”
Former World Number One Rory McIlroy, the first round leader, birdied the last two holes for a 67 and is six shots back on 12 under par in a share of fourth place with US Open Champion Justin Rose and Canadian Graham Delaet, both of whom carded rounds of 65.
Germany’s Martin Kaymer is a further two shots back on ten under par  after surging up the leaderboard with a magnificent course record 62.
