RUMFORD ROARDS INTO CONTENTION AT PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

REPORT BY EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
A brilliant course record-equalling 65 around Lake Karrinyup Country Club saw home hero Brett Rumford roar into contention at the Perth International.
Rumford, already a two-time winner on The European Tour this season, carded his seven under par effort in the most difficult conditions of the week to charge up the leaderboard into a share of second place, one stroke behind his fellow Western Australian Brody Ninyette heading into the final round.
Ninyette was another player to shine in the wind and rain as he posted a fine 67 to move to eight under and one clear of Rumford, Denmark’s JB Hansen (66) and South Korean former World Amateur Number One Jin Jeong (69).
But it was Rumford who stole the show on day three in Perth, producing eight birdies and just a single dropped shot to delight the home crowd.
“It was a tough day,” said Rumford. “It was very blustery. We had some really heavy downpours, which made, at times, made the golf course very, very tough.
“I guess today was just a credit to myself. I feel as though maybe the last two or three years, my maturity in the game and out on the golf course has really stepped up and that showed today.
“If I were to win here, it would be the crème de la crème - winning in front of your home crowd, there would be nothing better than that, that's for sure.”
Ninyette, meanwhile, is hoping to spoil Rumford’s party to secure what would be a life-changing victory and a two-year exemption on The European Tour.
“Being able to play in Europe next year would be massive,” said the 26 year old. “It would be amazing.  It would be a whole new experience, getting out there and playing over there would be unreal to see how the world's best do it.”
While the battle for the Perth International will take centre stage on Sunday, the fight to see which players can keep their playing rights for 2014 will enter the final round with many of the players in need of a huge finish on the upper echelons of the leaderboard.
Richard Finch and Fredrik Andersson Hed are among those players tied for fifth place on six under (along with Ross Fisher) and need to finish fourth and third respectively to survive, while Joel Sjoholm, who needs second place or better, is just a one stroke further back alongside Tour winners Michael Hoey and Danny Willet.
Despite a disappointing third round 75 which saw him fall back to four under, second round leader Peter Hedblom is not quite dead yet. The Swede, who needs to win to keep his tour card, will need to produce the performance of a lifetime to claim the ultimate prize, while Oliver Fisher, currently tied 17th on three under needs to finish in the top seven to succeed.

SCOTS LOSE GROUND IN CHALLENGE TOUR'S EVENT IN CHINA

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Nacho Elvira is in prime position to claim his debut Challenge Tour title after shooting “one of the best rounds of my life” on the third day of the inaugural Foshan Open.
Elvira’s best-of-the-day round of 66 moved the Spaniard to 14 under par and saw him open up a three-shot lead over the chasing pack, which is headed by joint overnight leaders Tyrrell Hatton and Sam Walker.
Elvira is rooming with his fellow Texas A&M University graduate Andrea Pavan this week, and he has the current Rankings leader to thank for his improved performances of late after the putting lesson – and new putter – he recently received from the Italian turned his fortunes around on the greens.
Elvira wielded his flat stick to devastating effect on the front nine at Foshan Golf Club, in Foshan City, China, notching a quartet of birdies to turn in 32 and establish a commanding position.
The wheels threatened to come off after the turn, however, as he made back-to-back bogeys on the tenth and 11th, where he three-putted, to slip back into the pack.
But four birdies in his last seven holes re-established Elvira’s supremacy and put him in charge of his own destiny, as he seeks the winner’s cheque of €41,234 and, with it, probable elevation to The European Tour for the first time.
Elvira, currently 50th in the Challenge Tour Rankings, said: “That has to be one of the best rounds of golf of my life. I started out with a good birdie on the first, then it went smoothly from there until the tenth hole, where I hit a couple of bad shots and actually made a good up and down for bogey. Then I got a bit nervous on the 11th and at that point the round could have gone the other way, but I’m really pleased at the way I fought back with four birdies.
“I’ve never been in this position before, so I’ve no idea how I’ll handle the pressure tomorrow. But I was very relaxed today, and I really enjoyed myself. We don’t normally get galleries like this on the Challenge Tour, so we had a lot of fun with the crowds and hopefully I can do the same again on the final day.”
Elvira will be joined in the final group by Walker, whose otherwise flawless round of 70 was spoiled by a shanked shot on the 13th hole, leading to his only bogey of the day.
The Englishman is currently 24th in the Rankings, but a fourth Challenge Tour title would guarantee him a place in the all-important top 15 and so seal a swift return to The European Tour.
He said: “I didn’t hit the ball as well as I would’ve liked today, but I putted extremely well and in the end I managed to hang in there. Hopefully I’m getting the hang of the greens now, because I didn’t putt very well in practice but since the start of the tournament, I’ve read the lines much better.
“It’s a big day tomorrow, but I’m going to try to treat it like any other. I know it’s easier said than done, but I’ve got a fair bit of experience of being in positions like this in my career, so hopefully that might give me a bit of an advantage. I can’t afford to think too much about it – I’ve just got to go out there and stick to my routine. I’m looking forward to it – it’s why you play the game.”
Walker’s compatriot Hatton matched his playing partner’s round of 70 for an 11 under par aggregate total.
Were it not for an ugly three-putt on the last hole Hatton would have held second on his own, but the Englishman – currently 15th in the Rankings – can take solace from the fact that he has edged a step closer to a place on The European Tour.
Indian Shiv Kapur is currently in fourth place on ten under par after signing for a round of 68.
Scotand's leading contenders Raymond Russell and Duncan Stewart both lost ground over the third round by failing to break par.

SGU BOYS CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS EVENT WASHED OUT - RESCHEDULED FOR NEXT SPRING

NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF UNION

The weather has hit the final event of the Scottish amateur domestic season in St Andrews today, with the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions called off due to heavy rain.
Play was abandoned at approximately 1.30pm due to flooded green on The Duke’s Course. Only a handful of players had completed their rounds.
With the forecast for the rest of the day to remain wet, play for the day was suspended.
The event is now to be rescheduled for the spring of 2014, depending on availability at The Duke’s. The selection criteria for the event will remain the same as that for the 2013 staging.
In light of today’s events, the SGU apologies for any inconvenience caused.
A star-studded field of 46 male junior winners had gathered for an end-of-year 18-hole stroke play contest to determine who would be crowned ‘Champion of Champions’.
National winners, Area champions and internationalists from across Scotland assembled at the world-renowned Fife venue in pursuit of the prestigious crown, being contested for a seventh time.
Last year, Greg Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert) took the title, 12 months after Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil, the current Scottish Boys champion, was the victor.
The girls’ Junior Champion of Champion was staged at the Duke’s last weekend, with Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) ending her year on a high by claiming the title.
In tough conditions, Whyte edged out international team-mate Nicola Robertson (Dunblane New) by a shot to win the title with an impressive 73 – following in the spike marks of a notable past winner, Ladies European Tour star Carly Booth.

TIGER WOODS LABELLED A CHEAT BY GOLF CHANNEL ANALYST BRANDEL CHAMBLEE

Former PGA Tour professional Brandel Chamblee, an analyst for the Golf Channel, has decided to take a step few other commentators or journalists would take by suggesting that Woods is “cavalier with the rules”.
In a sport which treats such accusations with the utmost seriousness, it is a bold allegation by Chamblee and one which could well have Woods consulting his lawyers.
Woods has been at the centre of several controverses this year. At the Abu Dhabi Championship in January he was penalised two shots for taking an illegal drop.
Then at the Masters he took another illegal drop and signed for an incorrect scorecard. He was not disqualified but was given a two-stroke penalty – officals saying that there had been “exceptional circumstances.”
The following month he gave himself a favourable drop at the Players Championship and in the BMW Championship in Chicago he contested a two-shot penalty for causing his ball to move while clearing away a twig.
Chamblee, using the analogy of how he himself had once cheated in a school exam and was downgraded to an F, said he would give Woods an F if he was writing a report card.
Chamblee then wrote in the US magazine Golf: “I remember when we only talked about Tiger’s golf. I miss those days. He won five times and contended in five majors and won the Vardon Trophy and – how shall we say this – was a little cavalier with the rules."
Woods was unavailable for comment last night.

LEE ROOKE IS WELSH PGA CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER OCTOBER 2013

 NEWS RELEASE
Newly crowned Welsh National PGA Championship winner Lee Rooke will savour the moment but isn’t going to rest on his laurels as he looks to take his game to new levels.
Rooke defeated Jon Bevan in a play-off to win thne £10,000 tournament at his home course at Royal St David’s and also earn a place among Europe’s elite at next year’s Wales Open.
Bevan had surged through the field with a superb two-under-par 67 including two birdies in the last three holes in the testing conditions of the day at the north Wales links.
It set a three under total for the 36-hole event which Rooke matched courtesy of a birdie at 16.
The pair played two extra holes on the par three 18th with Rooke securing the title with a par after his opponent had found the bunker for the second time in the sudden death shootout and could only manage a bogey.
Rooke’s victory in the Asbri Golf sponsored event earned him £1,500 and is also a rich reward for working hard on his game under the expert eye of his new boss, Royal St David’s head professional Gareth Lewis.
“It’s a great feeling to win having worked hard with Gareth for a year now and now we will sit down and see where we need to improve,” said Rooke who nearly pulled out through a sickness bug before the first round.
“I’m a lot calmer on the course now, and making better decisions. The next thing will see me heading to the gym to work on my fitness.”
He added: “Qualifying for the Wales Open is a big thing for me, it was the golden nugget, as I have only ever played once on the Challenge Tour and it was in the back of my mind in the play-off.”
Rooke was also delighted to win the prestigious Welsh National title because his first boss, Andy Griffiths, head pro at Llanymynech, twice won the event which dates back to 1904.
“He was my first boss so it’s great to get my name up there alongside his. It also feels really good to have won on Royal St David’s because of my attachment. But, it was brutal out there, the first five holes out there I probably could have done with a caddie. Luckily it stopped raining otherwise I would still be out there.
“I haven’t played many play offs so wasn’t that nervous and it went really quick. I didn’t really get time to think which was good.”
Bevan, who birdied 18 to make the play-off, earned the consolation of a place alongside Rooke in the PGAs of Europe International Team Championships in December.
“I played really well today and was happy to be in the play-off,” said Bevan.
“I think the best guy in the play off won, I just made a couple of bad swings and hit the bunker twice – I think they are going to rename it Bevan’s Bunker.
“Every time I tee up I try and win but it wasn’t until the 16th when I made birdie that I thought I’ve actually got a chance to win.
“I made a great birdie on 18 to get into the play-off so I’m delighted. From 12 inwards, there was a lot of head covers coming off. I wasn’t hitting a lot of irons put it that way so it was tough. But it’s tough, it’s Royal St David’s, a great challenge and great course and to have nearly pulled it off here would have meant a great deal, and it still means a great deal to have played well here.”
Former champion Garry Houston was third at one under with Cardiff’s Adam Constable shooting a fine 67 for fourth place.
Paul Mayo took the Wales Senior PGA National title with rounds of 70 and 73.
Paul Williams, sales and marketing director of Asbri commented: “We’ve had an excellent week here at Royal St David’s, one of Wales’ finest links courses, and would like to thank all the staff for their superb hospitality as well as all the tournament staff at the PGA. We are extremely proud to be title sponsors of the PGA Welsh National and sincerely look forward to returning back here next year.”
Eryl Williams, Asbri Golf’s managing director, added: “Our new partnership with the PGA is one that we are extremely excited about and a very significant step in the growth of our brand.
“We would like to thank everyone for their support this week and in particular our PGA customers who have supported our business. It’s great to give something back to the professionals who have supported us and congratulations to Lee (Rooke) the 2013 Welsh National PGA Champion.”

OBITUARY     SID MOULAND

Record six-time Welsh PGA National Champion Sid Mouland has passed away at the age of 80.
The Kenilworth-based golfer was one of the best Welsh players of his era and also enjoyed a successful club pro career.
Sid, whose son Mark became a tour pro, won the first of his Welsh titles at Southerndown in 1961 and defended his title at Royal Porthcawl 12 months later.
He had to wait until 1965 for his third title at Penarth before adding two more in succession at Conwy and Pyle & Kenfig and his sixth in 1969 at Llandudno.

WEBB SIMPSON GOES FOUR STROKES CLEAR AT TPC SUMMERLIN

Round 2 Recap: 2013 Shriners Hospitals For Children Open

In the second round of the the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Webb Simpson leads at 15-under par.
October 18, 2013
By PGATOUR.COM wire reports
LAS VEGAS -- Webb Simpson opened a four-stroke lead Friday in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, taking advantage of perfect scoring conditions at TPC Summerlin.
Making his first start since helping the U.S. win the Presidents Cup, the three-time PGA TOUR winner shot an 8-under 63 to reach 15 under. He had nine birdies and a bogey -- on the par-5 16th in his opening nine.
"The ball is really going far," Simpson said. "I was wondering why the scores were so low yesterday morning because I thought the ball might go a little shorter. But the ball was getting out there and the golf course played a little shorter than I thought it would, and I just putted well and kept going.
The 63 matched the lowest round of his PGA TOUR career.
"There's no wind, no clouds in the sky and it's really quiet, so it's easy to kind of daydream," Simpson said. "You've really got to focus on what you're doing and talk to your caddie, at least for me. I talk to him about what we're trying to do here, where we're trying to hit the ball."
The four-stroke lead broke the tournament second-round record of three set by Lon Hinkle in 1984 and matched by Rich Fehr in 1996 -- both when the event was 90 holes.
J.J. Henry followed his course-record 60 with a 71 to join John Senden, Jeff Overton, Chesson Hadley and Jason Bohn at 11 under. Bohn had a 64, Senden and Hadley shot 66, and Overton had a 68.
"I need to keep on making birdies out there," Senden said. "It's not as much building a score, it's just about doing a great job on making birdies, and if that's good enough to do it, well, hopefully it'll be me."
Hadley, the Web.com Tour Championship winner last month, is making his fourth career PGA TOUR start. He tied for 72nd last week in California in the season-opening Frys.com Open.
"It was a great day," Hadley said. "It's been a fantastic start to the week, and to be at 11 under and to have a chance going into the weekend is awesome. I've been in this position before as far as Web.com Tour, and certainly a little bit different stage out here on the PGA TOUR. Just looking to manage the nerves tomorrow and just realize it's just golf, and let's just go have some fun."
Henry had three bogeys and a birdie on his first four holes.
Defending champion Ryan Moore and Russell Knox were 10 under. Moore shot 63, and Knox had a 65.
Argentina's Andres Romero, second after a first-round 61, had an 81 to miss the cut.
Zach Johnson, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 11 in the world, made a cut on the number at 3 under after a 70. Jimmy Walker, Frys.com Open last week in California, also was 3 under after a 68.
