HARRY BANNERMAN RETIRES FROM WORK AT PAUL LAWRIE GOLF CENTRE

 

Banchory-based Harry Bannerman, one of the leading Scottish golf professionals of the second half of the last century, retired from his work at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, on Saturday.

Now in his 70s, Harry received a farewell gift from Robbie Stewart, PGA Director of Golf at the Centre on the South Deeside Road at the Haugh of Ardoe.

Said Robbie: 

"It goes without saying that Harry, a real North-east golfing legend,  will be missed.

‘’Harry made a tremendous contribution in recent times to the success of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, much of which went unseen as he started work while most of us were still in bed, and we obviously wish Harry a long and very happy retirement. "Professional golfers don’t ever completely retire though, as long as they can play golf and talk about golf they continue to work, and we hope that this is the case for Harry for many years ahead.’’

Arguably the highlight of Bannerman's successful career was holding Arnold Palmer, then in his prime, to a square match in the 1971 Ryder Cup match at St Louis, Missouri.

Harry beat Gardner Dickinson in his other singles tie and partnered Bernard Gallacher to victory over Billy Casper and Miller Barber.

Bannerman, a short-game wizard at his peak, won the Scottish professional title at Montrose in 1967 and by a 10-shot runaway margin at Strathaven in 1972.

He won the Northern Open three times - 1967, 1969 and 1972.

A back problem which resurfaced in 1973 virtually spelled the end of Bannerman's career as a front-rank European Tour professional.

He did not join the paid ranks until late in 1965 when he was 23.

But in only eight seasons before the back injury lowered his golfing horizons prematurely, Harry made a bigger mark on golfing history than many who competed for twice as long.

Bannerman, even though he was ignored by the Scottish Golf Union international selectors of the day, had a very good amateur career, while playing out of Murcar and working full time at Aberdeen's Rowett Institute.

He was encouraged to turn professional, sponsored to the tune of £1,000 by three Aberdeen businessmen, Hugh McMcDermott, Jack Hall and Bobby Morrison.

The year of 1971 was Bannerman's annus mirabilis.

He achieved six top-10 finishes on the European Tour and finished 11th behind Lee Trevino in the Open at Royal Birkdale.

BRYAN FOTHERINGHAM WINS ALLIANCE AT GARMOUTH AND KINGSTON

Bryan Fotheringham (Inverness) won Saturday's North Scottish Golfers' Alliance fixture at Garmouth and Kingston with a five-under-par  62 to win by a stroke from Gavin Hay (Nairn Dunbar) and Kevin Thomson (Moray). Five birdies were achieved on the 1st, 3rd, 11th, 12th and 15th.

Handicap Section One was won by L Stewart (Grantown) who produced a "Duncan-like" (Son) finish of 2,3,3,3. (3 under) to prevail by one. Section two winner Iain Laing (Grantown) had sixes at the 1st and 16th (par 4's) in return ing a 72 less 9 and Jim Macdonald (Inverness) included a 10 at the 3rd (Par 4) in his 79 less 14.

NORTH GOLF ALLIANCE REPORT FROM TARBAT, EASTER ROSS

Golspie's Darren Hexley was beaten into second place by a blistering nine hole count of 29 from his travelling companion John Forbes (Muir of Ord) in last Sunday's North Golf Alliance fixture over Portmahomack's Tarbat golf course in Easter Ross.

The second fixture of the season featured most of the the members who will figure in the race  towards the end of season scratch aggregate Quaich Trophy and  four of them bettered the par of 68 (34/34) with last season's Quaich runner-up runner, John Forbes (Muir of Ord) leading the way with a three under par 65.

Forbes had an indifferent first round over the nine hole circuit, a bogey at the first hole and a double bogey on the sixth hole for a two over par count of 36.  But his problem hole, the 389 yard 6^th and 15^th  on his second round was bettered by three shots in his second round mazy run of, 3,2,3,3,3,3 from the 13^th to 18^th that brought him home in 29 for a card of 65 and first place in front of Hexley.

One handicapper Hexley who was also three under par with halves of 32 and 33 was last season's MacKintosh Salver handicap winner was elevated to first handicap place in Class 1 with nett 64 and so has an early interest in both trophies. Brora's Ken Lorimer had the better inward half for second place ahead of Ronnie Matheson (Thurso) after they shared nett 65's.

Three time Quaich winner, Tain's Munro Ferries  had matching halves of 33 for 66 and his score was equalled by current Quaich holder Caithness's Dougie Thorburn (32/34) now a member at Tain.  

Thirteen members from Durness Golf Club made the journey to Portmahomack to swell the numbers to 53 so it was no surprise they had the lion's share of the prizes in the Class two handicap section. With a nett 62 from his handicap of 20 this section was won by Connor Munro followed on a card count back for second place by local Donald Urquhart over another Durness member Billy McBain, both nett 63's.

The venues swing back to Caithness this weekend when  Thurso Golf Club host a fixture.

Sponsored by the Golspie firm of accountants, Mackay and Co., Alness Golf Club member David  Kernaghan playing with a handicap of ten returned a four over par card of 74 to win the  Autumn Quaich  with a four shot winning nett score of 64 from the scratch local winner Robert MacDonald whose gross card reduced to 68.

MacDonald collected one of the two scratch vouchers ahead of  his noted club mate Jim Miller after his halves of 38 and 35 beat off Miller's 37 and 36 on count back.

RENFREWSHIRE BEAT LANARKSHIRE IN WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUE

Renfrewshire had a comfortable 7-1 win over league leaders Lanarkshire today at Bonnyton in the WOS League. Renfrewshire can now win the League next year for the 12^th consecutive year if they avoid defeat away to Dumbartonshire.  Lanarkshire have played all five games and have eight points. Renfrewshire have seven points from four games. Scottish International Matthew Clark of Kilmacolm set Renfrewshire on the way to victory with a 3/1 win in the top match against Craig Ross of Kirkhill. Co-incidentally they were tied joint 4^th in this years  SGU Order of Merit.  Matt was about five under par for the match finishing with a birdie at 17.

ASSOCIATION OF GOLF COURSE OWNERS APPLY FOR JUDICIAL REVIEW

The Association of Golf Course Owners has now put HMRC on notice of our intention to apply for a judicial review of their decisions relating to VAT in golf and the distortion involved.

We have also served notice on the UK Treasury Solicitor that it is our intention to apply direct to the European Commission for them to take proceedings against the UK Government for their failure to address the VAT distortion in golf. They have 28 days to respond before we take that action.

Please note that this is the culmination of 20 years of work by the Association of Golf Course Owners. We are specifically not the UKGCOA and we would like the European Golf Course Owners to communicate direct with us at AGCO so that we can explain our position. UKGCOA was a recently formed association, primarily linked to England Golf. Ours is a tax lobbying group and we would like recognition throughout Europe of all the work we are doing, under a degree of hostility from the governing bodies of golf.

Would the EGCOA please publicise our work and I personally would like to speak at a European Conference to explain our case.

Our documents will be published on line on the AGCO website in due course.

BROWN CLAIMS SECOND SENIOR TITLE AFTER AMSTERDAM WASH-OUT

Simon P Brown claimed the second European Senior Tour title of his rookie season at the Dutch Senior Open, where heavy rain and flooding caused the final round to be cancelled meaning the tournament was reduced to 36 holes.

The 50 year old had led the field by two overnight after he added a two under par second round 71 to his opening 72 in the weather-affected event at The International, beside Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.

The players had to battle the elements on day one in the Dutch capital as heavy downpours and cold temperatures played havoc with the conditions but after an overnight delay due to darkness, much better climes greeted the field on day two and Brown took advantage to edge clear.

Extremely heavy rain fell overnight before the final round, however, flooding the course, and with much more precipitation forecast there could only be one outcome as tournament officials called a halt to play for the week.

While Brown was disappointed not to have had the chance to win the title over the regulation three days, the Germany-based former club professional was delighted to have added to his trophy haul after playing some stunning golf in the opening two days to finish the week on three under.

“Obviously I'm delighted to have won the tournament,” said the West Sussex native. “The weather is just horrendous out there and it would have been a complete lottery for everyone if we even tried to begin play so these decisions have to be made.

“Honestly, looking outside, I am relieved. It doesn’t take anything away from my victory but obviously we would have all liked to have gone out and played a third round of this event. Sometimes you have no control over the circumstances.

“I'm just happy to have done what I did in the first two days. It’s amazing that I have two victories now. I never thought anything like this would happen in my first year on the Senior Tour.”

Brown would need something special in the final two events of the season to overtake current Order of Merit leader Steen Tinning and claim the John Jacobs Trophy but he has moved to fourth in the standings and has his eye firmly on finishing in the top six, which earns an exemption to all of the Senior Majors in 2014.

“I have entered for the Fubon Senior Open in Taiwan and then I will be going to Mauritius for the MCB Tour Championship and it’s a big goal now to finish in that top six for the Majors next year,” said the 50 year old.

“I haven’t entered for the Qualifying School in the USA and I just want to keep both feet on the ground. I’d like to play those few events out there and see what it’s like to play the Majors but I want to stay in Europe.

“I'm definitely in for The 2014 Senior Open Championship but there are still two events to go and everything is very close up there now. I had a goal at the beginning of the year and that was just to be in the top 30 but to be in with a chance of getting all the big ones next year is great.”

Ross Drummond, meanwhile, was disappointed not to have had a chance to mount a title challenge, having finished the second round two shots off the lead on one under par, but the Scot felt there was only going to be one result given the weather.

“Obviously I'm delighted to have finished second and get a best finish of the season,” said the 57 year old. “There was a lot of speculation this morning about what might happen but the decision was the right one. It would have been a great opportunity for me to claim a first Senior Tour title but in view of the conditions, I am glad that we didn’t have to go out there.”

Spain’s José Manuel Carriles, Paul Eales of England and Frenchman Marc Farry all finished in a tie for third place on level par while Paul Wesselingh’s tied sixth finish moved him to within just under €10,000 of Senior Tour Order of Merit leader Steen Tinning, who finished tied 18^th in Amsterdam.

England's David Lynn shot a final-round 63 to win the Portugal Masters and give him a first European Tour title since his KLM Open win nine years ago.

The 39-year-old was eight under for his round to set a clubhouse target of 18 under that proved unbeatable.
South Africa's Justin Walters finished just a shot behind in second place.

Overnight leader Paul Waring of England shot a level-par round to tie for third with Scotland's Stephen Gallacher and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger.

Jamie Donaldson of Wales was among those who shared sixth place at the Oceanico Victoria course in Vilamoura, with England's Ross Fisher a shot further back.
Scotland's Scott Jamieson failed to back up his stunning third-round of 60, suffering three bogies on the back nine for a one-over par 72 to fade to a tie for 13th.
"It's emotional," said Lynn, from Stoke, who still has close ties with Trentham, the Staffordshire course where he grew up.
"To go nine years without a victory and come close so many times you start to question whether you can do it again.
"It feels fantastic. This one's special as it's been so long since a win and it's just a week before my 40th birthday.

Lynn banks a winner's cheque for €333,330 (£282,905), but that is still dwarfed by the $865,000 (£541,645) he earned for finishing runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the 2012 US PGA Championship - his most rewarding week's work to date.
He started the fourth round in 16th place, but made nine birdies as he came from six shots off the pace,
Having birdied the 17th, he then enjoyed a stroke of fortune on the 18th after his approach narrowly escaped the water, before safely two-putting - then enduring a long wait before knowing that his score had been good enough to win.
"I was half-heartedly watching on TV," he said. "You don't wish bad on other golfers out there but you do start to feel a bit selfish, hoping their putts don't go in.
"But I've had to bide my time, and now I've finally got my hands on a trophy again."

ENGLAND U16s UNBEATEN IN AUTUMN INTERNATIONALS

England under 16s unbeaten in autumn internationals England’s boy under 16 golfers have enjoyed a triumphant autumn on the fairways, winning all three of their Home Internationals as well as beating Spain in a mixed match. The highly skilled squad began with a 10-2 victory over Wales at Oswestry in September, winning all eight singles after sharing the foursomes 2-2. Then it was on to St Andrews for the match with Scotland earlier this month which resulted in an 11½ – 3½ victory for England. All five foursomes were secured while the England boys won six of the ten singles and another was halved. The third match was played at Portmarnock over the weekend against the Irish and again England came out on top, this time 13-3. Just half a point was dropped in the morning four foursomes before all four afternoon four-balls were won. Matty Lamb (Northumberland), who wasn’t involved in the Welsh match, won all five of his games against the Scots and the Irish. In the earlier mixed under 16 match with Spain at Heswall, England won 10-2, dropping just one point in the eight singles, while England’s under 16 girls won 2 up overall from their four singles against the Swiss.
