KELLETT LEADS THE SCOTS AT STAGE 1 Q SCHOOL AT FRILFORD HEATH

Ross Kellett had a 71, Paul Shields a 72, Jack Doherty a 78 and Jordan Findlay a 78 in today's first round of the European Tour Qualifying School Stage 1 event at Frilford Heath GC, Oxfordshire.

Canter gallops to Q-School lead
Englishman Laurie Canter galloped into the lead after the first
round of The European Tour’s Qualifying School First Stage
Section D at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire, while South African
Louis de Jager and Wes Homan of the USA share the lead in the
concurrent qualifier at Golf d’Hardelot.
Canter, a former amateur star, carded a seven under par first round
65 at the English venue to take a one stroke lead over Sean
Einhaus of Germany, while Canter’s friend and former Walker Cup
player
Jack Senior was two shots further back in tied fourth place on four
under par.
Liam Bond, who led at the midway stage of the ISPS Handa Wales
Open at The Celtic Manor Resort in August, was in tied 17th place
after an opening round 71 while promising South African Brandon
Stone, who claimed a top ten finish in his professional debut at the
BMW International Open in June, carded a level par 72.
De Jager and Homan, meanwhile, both signed for six under par
rounds of 65 to lead at the northern French venue of Golf
d’Hardelot.
One shot off the lead were Frenchman François Delamontagne,
who has 207 European Tour appearances under his belt, and
Scot Paul Doherty, brother of Challenge Tour regular Jack,
who struggled to a 76 at Frilford Heath.
With 102 players taking part at each venue of the Section D
qualifiers this week, competition is fierce to finish in the top 24
and ties at both qualifiers, and thereby qualify for Second Stage.

STEPHEN GRAY LEADS TOMATIN THREE-ROUNDER BY THREE SHOTS

Hayston's Stephen Gray leads the field by three strokes with one round to play in the Tartan Tour's Tomatin Single Malt 54-hole pro-am tournament over three courses, Royal Dornoch, Nairn and Castle Stuart.
Gray, who has shot a three-under 67 at Dornoch, followed by a seven-birdie, four-under 68 at Castle Stuart, is on seven-under 135 with his final round over the Nairn links.
The task facing his closest rival, James McKinnon (Irvine), is to make up the leeeway on a different course, in his case, the par-70 Royal Dornoch.
McKinnon has so far shot a par 72 at Castle Stuart and an excellent six-under 66 at Nairn.
In third place is Welsh PGA Cup player Gareth Wright (West Linton) who has had a 67 and 72 for 139.
Round of the second day was a seven-under-par 65 by Greg McBain (Gamola Golf) at Castle Stuart. Strictly on numerical order, McBain is joint sixth on 141. He plays Nairn for his last round.
The fact that the top 10 or 12 players will be spread over three different courses means that there could well be a major upheaval in the overnight standings - but Gray looks a hot favourite for the big first prize.
