EUROPEAN TOUR SCHOOL QUALIFYING IN ITALY, PORTUGAL

EUROPEAN TOUR QUALIFYING SCHOOL
SECTION REPORT
Alessio Bruschi carded a course record round of 64 to finish a stroke clear after round one of the European Tour School's First Qualifying Section C at Circolo Golf Bogogno, Italy..

The Italian had a fine day on the greens, carding nine birdies and one bogey, a score which leaves him handily placed to progress with those in 24th place and ties earning a spot in Stage Two.

In second place is Swiss amateur Joel Girrbach who went blemish free on Tuesday, with five birdies and one of only six eagles on the day, to finish narrowly behind Bruschi.

A trio of players are three shots behind the top two in a tie for third, with Switzerland’s Nicolas D’Incau, Italy’s Andrea Bolognesi both alongside America’s Michael Jensen at four under par.

While two time Challenge Tour winner Antti Ahokas, who triumphed at the ECCO Tour Championship and 103 Abierto VISA de la Republica presentado por Peugeot in 2008, is in a five way tie for sixth place at three under par. The Finn is alongside Mark Hoffman, Horacio Leon, Hugo Leon, and Andrea Romano.

Meanwhile over at Ribagolfe, at the other Stage C venue, Justin Pieters fired a seven under par round of 65 on Tuesday to carve out a two stoke lead in Portugal.

The Belgian has been under the guidance of compatriot Nicolas Colsaerts, and he put that experience to good use in making nine birdies on Tuesday. Two dropped shots took a little shine off of an otherwise sublime display, and he is a couple of strokes clear of two men in second place.

One of these is American Daniel Berger who carded six birdies and two bogeys in his first eight holes en route to a five under par opening score, and he is alongside Chile’s Martin Ureta.

Three Spaniards – Vicente Blasquez, Eduardo Larrañaga and Diego Suazo – are all at four under par and in a tie for fourth, and they are alongside Canada’s Jordan Krantz.

SENIOR SCOTS HOLD ENGLAND TO DRAW IN SINGLES-ONLY FIRST DAY

FROM THE IRISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE

Winning start for Ireland at Seniors' Home Internationals

A storming performance in the singles gave European champions Ireland the perfect start at the Seniors Home Internationals at Royal Co Down.
Ireland swept all six matches against Wales, while England and Scotland battled to a draw in a match that swung one way and another throughout the afternoon.
The morning's play in the foursomes was halted after just over an hour.
With a long delay setting in, the team captains met with the Championship Committee and expressed a preference for declaring the foursomes halved with a good outlook for the singles matches.
One belt of sea mist in the afternoon called a temporary halt to the proceedings yet again just before the halfway point of the singles, but after the resumption, Ireland continued their early good play, with Garth McGimpsey leading from the front and beating Keith Stimpson on the 15th.
From then on in, Ireland look assured and ran out easy winners by 7.5-1.5, the margin of victory assured by final green wins for Arthur Pierse against Glyn Rees and for Adrian Morrow against Jeff Thomas.
Meanwhile, Scotland had taken the initiative early and looked strong in the first three matches.
But although Alan O'Neill beat John Ambridge (2/1) and Ian Brotherston beat Charles Banks (4/3), David Gardner lost the last hole and had to settle for a half against Richard Leatham.
England began their fightback there, and continued that run with a victory for Tyrone Carter on the 15th against Lindsay Gordon.
Andrew Stracey then turned his match around, winning at the final green against Scotland captain John Fraser, leaving the match to be decided between England's Chris Reynolds and Scotland's Lindsay Blair, who were all square playing the last, which they halved following a brilliant up and down from Reynolds.

THE SCOTTISH ANGLE
Scotland drew 3-3 with defending champions England and European title-holders Ireland whitewashed Wales 6-0 on the first day of the Senior men's home internationals at Royal Co Down, Newcastle, Northern Ireland.
Fog ruled out play in the morning foursomes and the matches were decided on afternoon singles along.
Scotland were leading England 2 1/2 to 1/2 with three matches to finish but, in the end, were thankful that tail-gunner Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth) could halve his match with Chris Reynolds after Andrew Stracey beat John Fraser (Royal Burgess) by one hole and Tyrone Carter beat Lindsay Gordon (Turnhouse) by 4 and 3 to wipe out the Scots' lead.
David Gardner (Broomieknowe) halved the top singles match with Richard Leatham.
Alan O'Neill (West Lothian) was a 2 and 1 winner over John Ambridge and Ian Brotherson (Dumfries and Co) put Scotland into a 2pt lead by beating Charles Banks 4 and 3.

LOGJAM FOR LEAD IN TAIN-BROA 36-HOLE CHALLENGE

Five players share the lead on two-under-par 68 and another eight are breathing down their necks from the 69 mark at the halfway stage of PGA Scotland's Tain-Brora 36-hole Challenge.
The first round was over the par 70 Tain and setting the pace as the field moves up to Brora, the most northerly venue for the Tartan Tour, are Jonathan Cliff (Murrayfield), Ross MacLeod (Clydeway Golf), Chris Kelly (Cawder), Gareth Wright (West Linton) and Craig Ronald (Carluke).
Kelly would have been the clear leader, possibly, but for a double bogey 6 at the sixth. His bag of six birdies was the biggest of the day and the Cawder man  finish well with birdie 2s at the 16th and 17th.
MacLeod could also have been No 1 on his o wn but for a bogey-bogey finish
First prize is £1,103 and easier to name the Grand National winner than predict who will step up to collect the four-figure cheque at the conclusion of this popular two-rounder in the far North.

FOG KOs OPENING FOURSOMES IN SENIOR HOME INTERNATIONALS

The mountains of Mourne do sweep down to the sea at Royal Co Down Golf Club. Picture by Cal Carson Golf Agency.
Heavy fog put paid to play in the morning foursomes on the first day's play at the Seniors Home Internationals at Royal County Down.
Following a joint meeting of the Championship Committee and the four team captains, at which a number of altnerative scenarios regarding the schedule for the week's matches were discussed, it was agreed to declare the foursomes matches halved in the first series of games.

This decision was made with the fog beginning to lift, and so the way was clear for the first day's singles to take place.

England, the defending champions, are playing Scotland in tehir opening match while recently crowned European champions Ireland take on Wales.
