ROBIN WILSON'S NORTH GOLF NEWS

North District Senior Championship

First Time Winner from Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club.

Willie Donnelly, pictured with Bryce Milne on right, is the new holder of the Macallan Trophy which he won at last Friday's North District Senior Championship played over the Nairn Dunbar Golf Club.

As well as winning the trophy for the first time he became the first Fortrose and Rosemarkie member to lift this trophy.  Donnelly, now 62,  previously played his golf out of Forres but after joining the Black Isle club, he was a member of the  first Fortrose team to win the Northern Counties Cup for the first time in 2002 at Tain. This Counties competition should return to Tain Golf Club next year.

Over a bogey free first nine holes Donnelly had two single putt greens to record birdies on the 2nd and seventh holes and a count of 33. A three birdie inward card, 12th, 15th and 16th fell back to 36 with his  bogies at the 10th and three putt 17th green for his  three under par 69 which  won by one shot from former winner Bryce Milne (Elgin).

Milne's gross 70 (35/35) was three under his age and his card ended, birdie, birdie, birdie on the final  three holes.

Third placed local member Douglas Brodie with a par matching 72 led a cluster of home members to the prize table  in the three age categories. Inverness's Laurie Chancellor had the lowest gross, a 74 in the 55 to 64 group and the three nett winners in this group were all from the host club, Paul Jackson, Ron Cameron and Derek Lamb.

In  the age group 65 to 70 with a gross 73  David Corstorphine continued the home run while the handicap winners were Gordon Scott (Inverness) followed by Les Dickson and Alan Boxx ,both from Boat of Garten.

In the final section for the over 71's Charles Stewart (Moray) led the way with an 83 and the two home members picking up handicap prizes were  David Fraser and William Main, first and third respectively with Ian Brodie from The Nairn separating them.

Commonwealth Spoons Finals at Fortrose and Rosemarkie.

The winners of the women's Northern Counties qualifying competition,  Liz Coghill and Denise McBride from Royal Dornoch who took their place in the Scottish finals of the Commonwealth Spoons competition which was recently played over the Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Course where they finished in third place overall.

The Dornoch pair's nett card of 75.5 off 12.5 finished just a stroke behind the Scottish winners from the Lothians, Ingrid Elgsaas and Georgine Parson who grossed 102 for nett 74.5 after their handicap of 27.5 was taken off.

Although Northern Counties were entitled to send five couples to the finals, due to the date clash with the European Women's senior championships in Slovenia, Royal Dornoch's Alison Bartlett and Tain's Mary Smith who with their club partners  had qualified for the finals were unable to play leaving the North with only one other couple at Fortrose, Gillian Dowling and Alex Fraser (Inverness) and they scored a nett 80.

At Bled in Slovenia, Smith and Bartlett and the Scottish team missed qualifying for the first flight but the Scots women made it through to the final of the B Flight where they were beaten by Belgium.

Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) and Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) won the foursome game 7 and 5 but in the singles Mary Smith (Tain) lost by two holes, Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) lost by 4 and 2, and Fiona De Vries (St Rule) went down by 6 and 4.

Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) was conceded victory in her match by the Belgians once they knew the overall contest had been won. The Scots were officially placed 10th in the rankings, having failed to qualify for the top eight championship flight.

Professional Golfers at Brora and Tain Next Week

The leading three money winning professionals on the Scottish Region fixture list will tee up at Tain Golf Club on Tuesday of next week to take part in the third Tain and Brora 36-Hole Challenge.

Already guaranteed to finish top of the list with already £33,159 of winnings this season is Banchory's Greig Hutcheon the professional who tied for second place in last season's competition.  Hutcheon tees off at Tain at 11.00 AM. In second place with £25,630 is Graham Fox from Clydeway Golf  and third with £18,700 is Aberdeen based Scott Henderson (Kings Links).

They are joined in a field of 69 by several local familiar names and given the honour of starting the first round at 8.30 Am is local Tain professional Stuart Morrison and from nearby Royal Dornoch Gary Ding wall. Tain's own members will be drawn out to support Morrison and a former local left handed club amateur Ross McLeod (Clydeway Golf)  the same professional attachment as the number two, Graham Fox.

The name missing from next week is last year's winner, David Patrick (Eli Golf Centre)  who set a new professional course record of 63 for Brora on the second day of play. This record will be lost to Patrick next week as the Brora course now has a new par five hole at the eleventh from the start of this season. Tain also had a new professional record set last year when in round one Scott Henderson carded a four under par 66.

Meanwhile at Royal Dornoch this weekend their begins on Saturday, the Clubgolf Pro-Am with local junior golfers and adult teams joining up with young professionals in a Pro-Am event supported by Clubgolf Scotland.

The Young trainees stay on in Dornoch to play in their own Sandy Pipey Assistant's 36 hole championship on Sunday and Monday.

IRISH HIT THE FRONT AT WYCHWOOD PARK Q SCHOOL

 FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
The Irish are setting the pace at the halfway stage of the European Tour Qualifying School – First Stage Section B at Wychwood Park with former Challenge Tour champion Colm Moriarty one clear of Ruaidhri McGee.
After 43 players progressed through to the Second Stage during last week’s start to the qualifying campaign, another 194 players are competing at two venues, Wychwood Park in Cheshire and Germany’s Golf and Country Club Fleesensee, a European Tour Destination, looking to follow suit.

McGee led by three overnight at Wychwood Park but was reeled in after following his opening 66 with a two over par 74 with Moriarty, winner of the 2007 FIRSTPLUS Wales Challenge, taking full advantage with a 67 to edge one clear at five under par 139.

The goal for is to finish in the top 22 and ties at Wychwood Park to progress through to the Second Qualifying Stage in November

At Golf and Country Club Fleesensee American John Hahn, who turned professional in 2011 and competed in this year’s US Open at Merion, hit the front after a second round seven under par 65 took him to 12 under par 132 and one clear of German amateur Sebastian Schwind.

An eagle three on the par five 12th was the highlight of a flawless round that also included five birdies for the 24 year old from Hudson, Ohio – one of nine Americans in the field and 21 across the two Section B venues.

The top 24 players and ties at the end of the four rounds from the starting field of 101 at G&CC Fleesensee will progress through to the Second Qualifying Stage in Spain in November.

It is anticipated that approximately 50 players will proceed from the two venues at this week’s First Stage (Section B) to Second Stage, approximately 26% of the total field.

LAW LEADS BY FOUR WITH A ROUND TO GO AT
PAUL LAWRIE INVITATIONAL

David Law increased his lead to a commanding four strokes with an impressive, six-under-par 64 in the second round of the Paul Lawrie Invitational at Deeside Golf Club today (Wednesday).
At 10-under-par 130, the former Scottish amateur champion and past Northern Open winner has outclassed most of the Tartan Tour's finest over the first 36 holes and it would be a brave man who would predict that he will not make every post a winning one over the Bieldside course.
Law's 64 was a brilliant, bogey-free effort, studded with birdies at the second, long third, fourth, ninth, short 12th and 18th.
His nearest rival is Kirkhill tour pro Paul Shields who had a 66 for 134. After bogeys at the sixth and seventh, Shields covered the last 10 holes in three under par. But it is going to take more than than to reel in Law.
Stephen Gray (Hayston) birdied five of his last 12 holes for a 67 and he shares third place on 136 with Paul O'Hara (Clydeway Golf) who birdied 16th and 17th for a repeat 68.
Scottish boys champion Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie) is on his own as leading amateur on 140 with a pair of 70s.

ERNIE ELS HEADS CLASSIC FIELD OF MAJOR WINNERS AT 2013 ALFRED DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP

     NEWS RELEASE
  • Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Martin Kaymer, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel among 12 Major Champions
  • Played over the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns
  • Amateurs join top professionals in celebration of links golf at its finest
  • Championship dates: Thursday, September 26 - Sunday, September 29

ST ANDREWS, September 18, 2013 – Four-time Major Championship winner Ernie Els leads a world-class field in next week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews.

The popular South African, who has won the Open Championship and the US Open twice, has confirmed he will be bidding for his first victory in the event, which takes place from September 26-29.

He leads a classic line-up of no fewer than 12 Major Championship winners: Rich Beem (US PGA 2002), Michael Campbell (US Open 2005), Darren Clarke (The Open 2011), Retief Goosen (US Open 2001 & 2004), Padraig Harrington (The Open 2007 & 2008, US PGA 2008), Martin Kaymer (US PGA 2010), Paul Lawrie (The Open 1999), Shaun Micheel (US PGA 2003), Louis Oosthuizen (The Open 2010), Charl Schw artzel (Masters 2011) and Vijay Singh (Masters 2000, US PGA 1998 & 2004).

Defending champion Branden Grace will also be returning to St Andrews, hoping to become the first golfer to win back-to-back Alfred Dunhill Links titles.

South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen will be back next week at the scene of his greatest triumph. It was in 2010 that the South African produced one of golf’s great performances, storming to victory at the Open Championship at a wind-lashed St Andrews by a staggering seven strokes.

He says: “St Andrews was always a special place for me even before my win there, but after that it meant everything – so much history; so many wonderful memories and knowing I would be a part of it for ever. I like to have fun on the golf course and the format at the Dunhill certainly lends itself to that.”
Ireland’s Padraig Harrington will be going for a remarkable third Alfred Dunhill links Championship, after winning both the individual professional event and the Team Championship with Irish businessman and racehorse owner J.P.McManus in 2002 and 2006.
Padraig says: “St Andrews is a very special place and I am delighted to have won there twice. When I won in 2006, I knew on the 18th that I was in a comfortable position. Walking up the fairway knowing that I was going to win the tournament is a memory that will live with me forever. It was really something to savour.”
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which celebrates links golf at its finest, is played over three of the world’s best known and respected links courses – the Old Course at St Andrews, the Championship Course at Carnoustie and the highly regarded Kingsbarns Golf Links

With a prize fund of US$5 million, the championship incorporates two separate competitions - an individual professiona l tournament for the world's leading golfers and a team event in which the professionals are paired with some of the most celebrated amateur golfers which creates a unique atmosphere.

Among the amateurs who have competed in the Championship in recent years are film and TV stars Andy Garcia, Hugh Grant and Kyle MacLachlan and sporting heroes Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Bobby Charlton, Johan Cruyff, Tim Henman, Sir Ian Botham and Shane Warne.

Entrance to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will be FREE at all three courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A ticket price of £20 (concessionary £15) will be charged for the final day’s play over the Old Course on Sunday, September 29.  Entry for under 16s and students is free. Tickets are available through the ticket hotline on 0870 010 9021 or at the entrance gates.
