SENIOR ROOKIE BROWN WINS RUSSIAN OPEN FOR OVER-50s

REPORT BY EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
England’s Simon P Brown survived a rollercoaster finish to become the fourth rookie to win in 2013 at a rain-soaked Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior).
Despite a closing five holes which featured a double bogey, a bogey and three birdies, the 50 year old completed the first wire-to-wire victory of the season at Moscow Country Club after a closing 70 sealed a 12 under par 206 total and a two-shot cushion over joint runners-up Mike Harwood and Carl Mason (both 68).
Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie (71) was amongst the group one shot further back in a three-way tie for fourth alongside Spaniard Miguel Angel Martin and Denmark’s Steen Tinning (both 72).

With almost constant rain peppering the outskirts of the Russian capital on Sunday, Brown, who led by one overnight, birdied the second before making his first bogey in 39 holes at the difficult third.

Two gains in succession from the sixth extended his advantage before a manic close saw his lead wiped out.

Playing in the third from last group, Australia’s Harwood and Mason of England were on the surge as a gain for the former at the long 17th and a birdie from the bunker for the latter at the last handed the pair a clubhouse total of ten under par.

Almost simultaneously, Brown, who had looked entirely composed all week in his pursuit of a first title since gaining his card at Qualifying School in January, lost his ball with an errant drive at the par four 14th en route to a double bogey. He bounced back immediately with a birdie at the long 15th but when he missed a short par putt at the following hole to slip to ten under for the tournament a play-off with Harwood and Mason looked imminent.

Brown kept his nerve, however, rattling in a 25-foot birdie at the 17th before almost holing a quite magnificent seven iron approach to the par four last for the easiest of tap-ins and a superb maiden victory.

“Funnily enough I was quite calm, despite how the score card must look,” said Brown, whose win propels him from 51st to fifth in the Order of Merit thanks to a winner’s cheque of €97,305.

“I was disappointed to lose a ball at 14 but I told myself just to keep going and hung in there for a strong finish.

“But that shot into 18 was very nice. That took all the pressure off and I was able to enjoy the walk up to the green.”

It has been quite the journey for Brown, who finished tied fourth at the Russian Open here 17 years ago on the Challenge Tour, having spent much of his life as a club professional at Golf Club Rhein-Sieg in Germany, and he heralded Sunday as a “life changing day”.

“It’s been a bit of a story I suppose,” he continued. “I think I expected a bit too much of myself when I first got on Tour but the last few weeks a change back to my old putter has helped me to play well again.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time as a professional in Germany but this is different – the biggest win of my career by far and a life changing day.”
Brown is the fourth rookie to win on the 2013 Senior Tour in the last five events, following Steen Tinning (Berenberg Masters), Santiago Luna (SSE Scottish Senior Open) and Colin Montgomerie (Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters).

DOUBLE DUTCH AS LUITEN FOLLOWS HUIZING VICTORY WITH PLAY-OFF WIN OVER JIMENEZ

cid:image003.jpg@01CEAFED.E1700D10
REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR
COMMUNICATIONS
Joost Luiten set the seal on an historic day for Dutch golf by winning the KLM Open after a sudden death play-off with Miguel Angel Jiménez.
Shortly after his compatriot Daan Huizing had won the Kharkov Superior Cup on the Challenge Tour, Luiten delighted the huge crowds at Kennemer Golf and Country Club by beating Jiménez with a par at the first extra hole.
That sparked scenes of wild celebration not seen since Maarten Lafeber won his national Open in 2003.
After both players had parred the last hole in regulation play to finish tied on 12 under par – Jiménez courtesy of a round of 67 and Luiten a 68 – they returned to the 18th tee for the play-off.
Having leaked his tee shot right on the 400 yard par four, Jimenez needed a fairway wood for his approach into a strong wind, but managed to find the front edge of the green.
However, the 19-time European Tour champion charged his birdie putt six feet past the hole and then missed the return, leaving Luiten to hole from three feet for a par four and a victory which earned him €300,000.
That moved Luiten to 11th in The Race to Dubai and also saw him climb into the top 60 of the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time.
He said: “I’ll never forget this day, that’s for sure. I came second here in 2007, which was a pretty special week. But this has topped that by quite a way. To win your national Open is an unbelievable feeling, I’m so proud.
“There were a lot of nerves jangling inside. I tried to stay calm and focus on my game, but it was very tough in the wind. As soon as you lose your focus in those conditions you know you’re going to make some mistakes, so I stayed patient and waited for my chances to come along, and luckily they did on the back nine.
“I have to say the crowd were unbelievable all week. Even when it rained all day yesterday, they still came out to support me, and I’ll never forget that. It makes it so much more enjoyable when you’re playing in front of large crowds, because you know it means something and you want to do well for them. I’m just so pleased I was able to give them this win.”
For his part, Jiménez was left to rue his costly bogey in the play-off, but the Spaniard was typically magnanimous and philosophical in defeat.
He said: “I was very solid all day but made a couple of mistakes in the play-off, and got punished. But Joost played very well, so credit to him. He’s a deserving winner.
“The gusts made it very tough, with club selection especially. But for the most part I coped quite well, so I was pleased. In the end it wasn’t meant to be, but you can’t win them all. I still had a very good week – I have no complaints. I gave it my best shot – and I’m still alive!”
Third place was shared between the English duo of Simon Dyson (68) and Ross Fisher (66), France’s Grégory Havret (66) and Ireland’s Damien McGrane (69).
+Richie Ramsay equalled the lowest round of the tournament - a six-under-par 64 in the fourth round.

TONY McCLUYRE WINS ENGLAND SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONS' TITLE

Tony McLure, a familiar name within golf in his native North east of England, beat the rain and a clutch of internationals to win the England Senior County Champions in style at Woodhall Spa.

The 55 year old former greenkeeper, playing out of Longhirst Hall in Northumberland, fired a superb second round 70 for 145, three over par, and a one shot winning margin from English Senior champion Richard Latham.

Despite the miserable conditions, cold with frequent rain and squally winds, McLure (image copyright John Thomson Photography) had 15 pars and two birdies on his card and was the only player in the field to beat par.

“This is very pleasing,” he said modestly after collecting the trophy. “I knew when I arrived here that if I could play well I’d be in the hunt. These conditions don’t bother me. You just have to get on with it.”

Starting the day three strokes off the pace, he was out in 34 with a birdie at nine but he bogeyed ten when he under-clubbed and found a bunker.

But his second birdie came at the long 14th where he fired a three-wood 230 yards to the green and two-putted to pick up another shot. “That was the best three wood I’ve hit for a long time,” he added,

From there he parred his way in for a homeward 36, holing some key putts when needed while he also knew what the opposition were doing.

“I knew Richard had made a big number somewhere so I just tried to play the remaining holes in level par,” he said. “At the last I made a solid four after hitting a wedge from 56 yards to a foot. But I only missed one green and didn’t miss a putt.”

Latham, looking to add the County Champions title to his English, Scottish and Lincolnshire senior crowns, took double bogey at the third he found sand. But after going out in 37 his real Achilles Heel came at the 13th where he hooked his tee shot into sand and could only splash out.

He found a sloping lie and sliced his third shot into trees, his ball finishing against a trunk. After taking a drop, he took three more for a triple bogey seven before signing for 74.

“It is very disappointing but that was a stupid lack of concentration,” he said. “If you have a lapse on this course you get punished and I know that more than anyone.

“But this has been a great year for me, I still have the Seniors Home Internationals to come and you can’t win everything.”

McLure’s future could mirror Latham’s. He is also a first-year senior and despite a poor showing in the English Seniors has already made his mark with second place in the Welsh Seniors, equal third in the Scottish while he won the Northern Counties Seniors title.

“This win should move me up the seniors Order of Merit but my target is to represent my country,” he added. “Being a senior is the start of a new career for me and I’d love an England cap.”

KEEBLE WINS ENGLISH COUNTY CHAMPIONS' TITLE AT WOODHALL SPA

A birdie four on the final hole thanks to a three-foot putt saw Bobby Keeble win the County Champions at a wet and windy Woodhall Spa and get the monkey off his back.

The 18 year old England boys international from Essex carded a second successive 73 for 146, level par, and a one stroke winning margin over Yorkshire champion Chris Halley, who signed for 79.

Keeble (image copyright John Thomson Photography) came into the event with a string of second places to his name including losing a playoff for the English Boys under 18 Championship at Royal Cinque Ports last year. So the victory was something of a relief.

On an afternoon that saw shots shed in monotonous regularity by the first round front-runners, the lead changed frequently and it was anyone’s title to win. But Keeble proved the exception to the rule and kept his game under control.

“Finally to win a big one feels good,” said Keeble. “I didn’t think I was anywhere near the lead and was out of contention as I didn’t putt well for the first 14 holes. But I holed a 20-footer for birdie on 15, saw the scoreboard and realised I was still in with a chance.

“I had a solid two putt on 16 and my ball shaved the hole for a birdie on 17. I thought I needed to birdie at last to make a playoff but I’m glad it was for the win.”

No one wanted extra holes in the miserable conditions, cold with frequent rain and squally winds, so Keeble’s birdie was a godsend. But it was also agony for Halley, who was in majestic form during the morning when he led with a superb five-under-par 68.

That included eagles on three of the par fives along with three birdies. But he slipped to a second round 79 for 147 then had to wait to see if he would be caught.

“I missed short putts on the opening three holes then bogeyed four and five,” he lamented. “I didn’t hit it anyone near as good as I had in the morning,” added the joiner from Whitby.

Halley led by a shot from Kent’s Alfie Plant at lunch but he also fell by the wayside, finding a double bogey six at 16 and running up a nine on the last for an 83 and joint third on 152.

But in the end the day belonged to Keeble who found himself in the champion’s position after a long wait.

“Some people told me I should get the monkey off my back but I wasn’t feeling that way,” added Keeble. “It’s a nice way to end my season on a winning note and now it means a lot of work over the winter.” It’s a good bet he’ll recall this victory many times over that time.

DUTCHMAN DAAN SCORES AGAIN ON CHALLENGE TOUR IN UKRAINE

CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT
FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Daan Huizing confirmed his status as one of the hottest up and
coming prospects in world golf after the young Dutchman claimed
his second victory in as many appearances, beating South Korea’s
Sihwan Kim by a two shot margin at the inaugural Kharkov
Superior Cup in the Ukraine.
The 22 year old’s clinical five under par final round of 67 helped
complete a marvellous double for The Netherlands after Joost
Luiten’s play-off victory over Miguel Angel Jiménez on home soil at
the KLM Open.
Back in Ukraine, Huizing belied his years with nerves of steel when
faced with one of the toughest home stretches of the season on the
European Challenge Tour, carding three birdies in five extremely
difficult closing holes.
His second win, coming two weeks after a play-off victory over former Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson in the Northern Ireland Open Challenge Presented By Clannah and XJET, came courtesy of an almighty change in fortunes on the back nine as Huizing was four shots back from his playing partner standing on 13th tee.
There was a seismic shift in momentum thereafter, with Kim carding a double-bogey at the tough par five before they both birdied the 14th to leave a margin of two shots.
A bogey for the South Korean at the par five 15th slimmed his lead to just one before the big turning point at the 16th, where a birdie for Huizing and a bogey for Kim resulted in a two shot swing and launched the former World Amateur Number Three to the summit.
From there on in it was a textbook show of composure and a birdie at the 17th earned him a two-shot lead going down the final hole. Huizing then displayed the audacity and skill of a true champion by attacking the treacherous pin at the final hole, which was tucked in the front left edge of the green, next to the lake.
His approach pitched ten feet past the hole, a matter of feet from the hazard - to the delight of the watching crowds - and he two-putted for a victory which moves him to third in the Challenge Tour Rankings and virtually guarantees his place on The European Tour in 2014.
“It’s just fantastic to win,” said Huizing, who last year won the St Andrews Links Trophy and Lytham Trophy by 11 shots and 14 shots respectively in the non-paid ranks. “It was a fantastic week, the atmosphere, the location, everything about it was amazing.
“The first few days I was almost too relaxed here and I didn’t feel like I was in contention to win. But the last two days I was really sharp and got closer and closer to the lead. On those last few holes I just got the focus going and managed to win.
“My birdie at the 16th was a huge moment. I got closer on 13 and 15 when Sihwan dropped shots but my birdie there and Sihwan’s bogey was just huge.”
Huizing’s record on the Challenge Tour is now almost identical to that of former World Number One Martin Kaymer, who has become one of the most successful graduates in the history of the tour.
To this point, Huizing has played the same amount of tournaments as Kaymer did – eight - both winning twice, with four more top fives each while Kaymer claimed two more top 15s to boot and Huizing has added two top 20s thus far.
Huizing’s scoring average so far this year is also something to behold. In 42 rounds, he has averaged 68.32 shots. That record is better than the 2013 Challenge Tour average of American Brooks Koepka, who won three events in just nine appearances this year.
Kim, who signed for a two under par final round of 70, was left with some consolation as his runner up finish elevated him to fifth in the Challenge Tour Rankings.
Englishman Daniel Brooks also made a significant gain in the Rankings as his four under par final round 68 earned a third place finish on 12 under par and moved him from 81st to 45th. That leaves him in a strong position to at least battle for a place in the season-ending Dubai Festival City Challenge Tour Grand Final hosted by Al Badia Golf Club.

ANGUS WIN INTER-DISTRICT BOYS' EVENT AT ELGIN AFTER LAST NINE HOLES ARE WASHED OUT

Angus pipped North-east by two shots for the team title after the Inter-district boys' invitational tournament at Elgin Golf Club today was reduced from 36 to 27 holes because the course was starting to flood in places after heavy rain for most of the day.
At the end of the morning foursomes over 18 holes, North-east (221) led by a shot from Angus (222) with North (231) lying third.
When the afternoon singles were cut to nine holes, Angus leapfrogged over North-east with a best seven from eight tally of 272 to their rivals' 275.
