RIU GOES TWO CLEAR AS THE UKRAINE HOSTS FIRST BIG TOURNEY

CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT
Victor Riu took inspiration from his playing partner and Ukrainian football legend Andriy Shevchenko as the Frenchman’s course-record eight under par 64 earned him a two shot lead after the opening day of the inaugural Kharkov Superior Cup.
The 28 year old, a winner on the European Challenge Tour already this year, was drawn alongside the former European Footballer of the Year and American Brinson Paolini as Ukraine hosted its first major professional golf tournament.
While a plethora of journalists and TV crews gathered to watch Shevchenko make his Challenge Tour debut, it was another man in the group who stole the limelight with a near flawless round at the stunning Superior Golf and Spa Resort.
His round caught fire at the fourth hole as the Parisian eagled the reachable par five before following that with successive birdies at the fifth and sixth. His only mistake of the round came at the seventh as an aggressive approach to the long par five cost him a shot, but a birdie at the ninth took him to the turn in four under before four more birdies on the way home launched him to the summit.
Riu admitted that he is not a football fan but was buoyed on by the jovial mood and constant encouragement from the former AC Milan and Chelsea striker, who is regarded as one of Ukraine’s best ever footballers.
“I'm very happy today,” said Riu, who won the Swiss Challenge in July and currently sits fifth in the Challenge Tour Rankings. “I played really well and my putter was on fire, I holed a lot of putts. That was surprising because it’s not very easy to read the greens.
“I am not a big fan of football so I didn’t really know much about Andriy but it was great to play with him. There were a lot of people watching.
“He was great. Every time I holed a putt he shook my hand or gave me a high five, he was really pushing me on to play better and cheering me when I made birdies so that was a really big help for me. I did put it up on Facebook that I was playing with him and it got a lot of responses so I knew it was a big deal!
“I'm feeling confident now with my game and I'm really relaxed so I hope this continues for the next three rounds.”
Shevchenko carded a 12 over par 84 and admitted that his putting had let him down but overall was delighted with the day, especially being in such esteemed company as the tournament leader.
“I'm so happy to have played with two really nice guys today,” said the 36 year old. “To play with Victor and see him shoot a course record and play fantastic golf was great. I learned so much about the game from the two guys.
“It’s a completely different game when you are under pressure but I really enjoyed it still and I'm so happy to be at this tournament, even if my scoring didn’t go so well. It’s a great experience for me.”
Sihwan Kim was two shots behind Riu as the Korean signed for a six under par round of 66, which included just a single bogey. Phillip Archer of England and Dane Lucas Bjerregaard were a shot further back on five under par while there were six players on four under par.

FRIDAY IS CRUNCH DAY FOR Q SCHOOL STAGE 1 HOPEFULS

The final round of The European Tour’s Qualifying School First Stage – Section A beckons for the 102 players who survived the third round cut at both the Roxburghe Hotel and Golf Course and Golfclub Schloss Ebreichsdorf.

With the top 17 players (and ties) in Scotland and the top 22 players (and ties) in Austria surviving until at least the next Stage of the Qualifying School Marathon, all that matters to the 102 third round survivors is the score required to keep the dream of playing on The European Tour alive.
Those who fail to gain pass marks have kissed goodbye to £1,500 - the extortionate entry fee charged by the European Tour.

With such stakes on the line, the final round of any Stage of the Qualifying School is among the most pressure-filled moments in any player’s career.

The men feeling the most pressure tomorrow at the Roxburghe will be the 15 players who are either on or one shot either side of the current qualifying mark of one over par; while there are 17 men in the same position at Golfclub Schloss Ebreichsdorf, where the current mark in six under par.

'OLD MAN' JIMENEZ SETTING PACE IN KLM OPEN

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Evergreen Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez again proved there is no substitute for experience by topping the leaderboard with a round of 64 on the opening day of the KLM Open.
The 49 year old arrived at Kennemer Golf and Country Club on the back of a top five finish at last week’s Omega European Masters, and promptly picked up where he left off in Switzerland with a six under par round which included eight birdies.
The former Ryder Cup star has made a remarkable recovery from the broken leg he suffered whilst skiing at the end of last year, and is currently 21st in The Race to Dubai having finished in the top five in three of the 12 events in which he has competed this season.

Jiménez birdied three of his first four holes in Zandvoort, The Netherlands, and after dropping his first shot of the day at the sixth hole, he rallied with a majestic approach to five feet at the seventh to get the shot straight back.

He got his back nine off to a disappointing start with a bogey at the tenth hole, but followed up a tap-in birdie at the par five 12th with an approach to five feet at the next.

But the highlight of his round arrived at the 16th hole, where Jiménez holed out with a wedge from 50 yards. After saving par from ten feet at the 17th hole, he rolled in an eight footer at the last to grab the outright lead.

“When the sun came out I started to play my best golf,” said Jiménez. “Holing my wedge shot on the 16th was very nice, then the birdie on the last was a great way to finish. So I’m very happy.

“It’s a nice course and it’s in great condition, so I enjoyed my day very much. It’s maybe not playing as firm as it normally would, because of all the wet weather we’ve had. But hopefully we can get a bit more sun and it will dry out over the next few days.

“Seve’s first win on The European Tour was here in 1976, and José María [Olazábal] also won here in 1989, so hopefully I can win here too. That would be fantastic.”

Jiménez currently leads by one stroke from Robert Allenby, David Howell, Pablo Larrazábal, Damien McGrane, Gary Orr and Fabrizio Zanotti.
