ADAM DUNTON LEADS BY THREE AT HALFWAY IN SE DISTRICT OPEN

Last year's winner, Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) leads the South East District Open field by three strokes with Sunday's two rounds to come.
Dunton had Saturday scores of 67 and 69 over the par-69 West Linton Golf Club layout for a two-under-par tally of 136.
His nearest rivals at Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) (71-68) and Craig Ross (Kirkhill) (70-69).
McDonald needs to finish ahead of James White (Lundin) to win the SGU Order of Merit title. This is the last counting event. James, beaten finalist in the recent Scottish amateur championship, is on 143 (70-73)

There was an Aberdeenshire 1-2-3 at the end of the first round of the 72-hole SGU Order of Merit event.
Kevin Duncan (Cruden Bay) led on three-under 66, a shot ahead of Adam Dunton (pictured right) with John Duff (Newmachar) lying third on 68.
On 69 were Craig Howie (Peebles), Kyle McClung (Wigtownshire Co) and Graham Robertson (Silverknowes).
Scott Borrowman (Dollar) was one of five players on 70.
The first round cut fell at 152 and the second-round CSS was 73 (reduction only).

MONTY MARCHES THREE CLEAR IN BID FOR FIRST SENIOR TOUR WIN

REPORT BY EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
A stunning run of six consecutive birdies helped Colin Montgomerie surge into a commanding lead as the Scot searches for his maiden European Senior Tour win at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters.
After trailing by one overnight, Montgomerie looked in imperious form in signing for a second superb 68 in a row to move three clear of two-time Senior Masters champion Carl Mason on eight under par, while another Scot, Ross Drummond is a shot further back with 18 holes to play at Woburn Golf Club.
There were deceptive conditions for the second day’s play, with blanket blue skies and glorious sunshine belying a swirling Woburn wind and a fast and firm Duke’s Course that saw scoring conditions difficult and only ten men finish under par by close of play on Saturday.
But Montgomerie, this week making just his third appearance on the Senior Tour and chasing his first professional victory since the 2007 European Open, seemingly revelled in the challenge, bouncing back from an opening bogey at the par five first with six straight pars.
It was at the par four eighth, though, that his round caught fire, holing a 30-foot birdie putt to kick-start a run of six birdies in succession in what was a true masterclass in iron-play.
Montgomerie two-putted for a birdie at the long 11th but besides that the eight-time European Number One’s gains at the ninth, tenth, 12th and 13th holes all came after hitting his approaches to three feet or closer.
“I didn’t really have to make one putt in that run after holing that long one at the eighth,” said Montgomerie, who made a second bogey of the day at the 14th before parring his way in.
“So my irons are good, it’s just a question of getting into the right positions and then trying to take advantage. The fairways have firmed up a lot in the last few days and when that happens this course becomes difficult so it’s a question of managing your way around.
“It would mean an awful lot to win tomorrow,” he continued. “I haven’t won for a long time, six years, so it would be very special if I can go on and complete the job.”
The leader also took time out to send his best wishes to the hospitalised Bernard Gallacher, who captained Montgomerie in his first three appearances in The Ryder Cup.
He said: “All we can do, as everybody will, is wish him well. Our thoughts go out to him and his family and let’s hope he makes a speedy recovery.”
Mason, who won this event in 2006 and 2007, birdied three of the four par fives en route to a three under par 69 to finish three shots behind Montgomerie heading into the final round.
If the 60 year old were to triumph on Sunday then the Senior Masters would become the fourth Senior Tour event that Mason has won three times after the English Senior Open, the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship and the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.
“I drove the ball beautifully today so I’m very pleased,” said 25-time Senior Tour winner Mason. “I managed to stay out of trouble and that is very important around here, it’s a real test of golf.
“It’s a deceptive course, it’s not one of those that is going to get eaten up – it never happens.
“If I can play like that again tomorrow then I will give myself a real chance.”
Overnight leader Luis Carbonetti struggled somewhat in the breezy conditions, posting a two over par 74 to finish the day in a tie for fourth place alongside Spain’s Miguel Angel Martin on three under par.

DUTCHMAN DAAN'S THE MAN IN NORTHERN IRELAND CHALLENGE

  REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Daan Huizing will take a six shot lead into the final round of the Northern Ireland Open Challenge presented by Clannah and XJET after a flawless third round of five under par 66 saw him soar clear of the field at the Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

The flying Dutchman has not made a bogey at Galgorm since the first hole of his second round on Friday morning and such consistency, coupled with five third round birdies, has put the 22 year in a brilliant position to claim a maiden Challenge Tour title.

Huizing will begin the final day six clear of Sweden’s Jens Dantorp, Englishman James Heath and Germany’s Bernd Ritthammer, who posted respective scores of 69, 65 and 68 to move into a share of second spot on ten under.

Former Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson posted his own 68 to move to nine under, but Daan is most certainly the man to catch at the €170,000 event.

“It took me a few holes to relax into the round today but once I did that I managed to play really well and take a few chances,” said Huizing, who has produced four top five Challenge Tour finishes in just six appearances this season.

“I knew that I had a nice lead and once I got into my game today I just wanted to keep going and to try and make as many birdies as I could because the bigger the lead I have then the better it is going into the final round.

“To be six ahead is really good because I can probably be a little bit more conservative tomorrow. If I had only been a couple under today then there would have been a few guys who would be looking at the scores know if they shot six under in the final round then they could catch me, so it is good to have such a lead going into the final round.”

Huizing revelled in the fantastic atmosphere at Galgorm Castle, with 6,072 people coming through the gates to watch some of Europe’s finest young talents in action.

“The crowds here are so knowledgeable and it makes a really big difference when you are playing in front of a British crowd,” said Huizing.

“Their appreciation if good shots just makes you want to perform for them so I hope they come out tomorrow and keep supporting the tournament because it has been amazing to play in front of so many people this week.”

Unfortunately the home galleries could not inspire the home players to make a third round move at Galgorm, with Jonathan Caldwell the leading Irishman on five under par.

But those who do make it through the gates for Sunday’s final round could just be witnessing the birth a star, as Huizing looks to close out his first Challenge Tour win and take a huge step towards promotion to The European Tour.

AMERICAN UIHLEIN GOES THREE CLEAR IN WALES OPEN

REPORT BY EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Peter Uihlein is on course to capture the second European Tour title of a stunning rookie season after opening up a three-shot lead on the third day of the ISPS Handa Wales Open.

The talented American, who is coached by his renowned compatriot Butch Harmon, tamed the Twenty Ten Course in blustery conditions at The Celtic Manor Resort to move into pole position to double his tally of titles, having won the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI in May.

Uihlein started the season on the Challenge Tour, but will almost certainly finish it by teeing up in the money-spinning DP World Tour Championship, Dubai after a series of impressive performances on The European Tour this term.

His four under par round of 67 in tricky conditions was an exercise in control and patience, and moved the 24 year old to seven under par, three strokes clear of the French duo of Grégory Bourdy and Thomas Levet.

Uihlein, who eagled the par five ninth hole, said: “Today I felt like I was able to slow everything down, and just be in my own element. I was really trying to make sure I didn’t get ahead of myself, and keep it at one shot at a time.

“I learnt a lot playing with Jim Furyk in the first two rounds of the [US] PGA Championship, which was an unbelievable experience. Just watching him go about his business, and the way he handles himself, was an education, and that’s something I’m trying to do in my game.

“I’m excited. I feel like I’ve put myself in a good position and given myself opportunities, and that’s what it’s all about. I feel like the more I do it, the more comfortable I am doing it. Today was a great day and a good step in the right direction, and hopefully I’ll be able to repeat it tomorrow.”

Levet matched Uihlein’s round of 67 to climb 18 places up the leaderboard, from 20th to tied second.

The veteran Frenchman flew out the blocks with four birdies in his first six holes en route to reaching the turn in 32, and whilst his back nine was more of a mixed bag, Levet was understandably delighted with his day’s work.
He said: “I’m very happy, because that course is a monster. It’s probably not designed to be played in dry conditions and bouncy, and even if you hit a great shot off the tee, on some holes you can still find yourself in trouble. It’s so difficult, so I’m really happy with a 67.”
Bourdy might have challenged Uihlein for the lead were it not for a double bogey at the short 13th hole, where his tee shot found the water hazard. But he rallied impressively with a fourth birdie of the day at the 15th hole to join his fellow Frenchman on four under par.
Earlier in the day, Swede Peter Hedblom had posted the lowest round of the day, a 66 to climb to three under par. He was later joined on that mark by Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello (71) and Dutchman Joost Luiten (69).
Overnight leader Liam Bond endured a difficult day, labouring to a seven over par round 78 to slip back into a tie for 31st place on two over par.

GB AND I BOYS WIN JACQUES LEGLISE TROPHY SIX POINTS

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R AND A
The R&A:Great Britain and Ireland regained the Jacques Leglise Trophy with a convincing 15 – 9 victory over the  Continent of Europe at Royal St David’s Golf Club, Harlech  in North Wales today.
GB and I led the match throughout after the first morning foursomes on Friday and saw out the victory with a 4½ and 3½ win in the final singles this afternoon to reclaim the trophy which the Continent of Europe won last year at Portmarnock.
GB and I had earlier strengthened their grip on the match by winning two and halving the other two matches in the morning foursomes.
That left them requiring only two points from the eight afternoon singles matches to reclaim the trophy and English players Bradley Moore and Marco Penge clinched the points with victories in matches four and five.
“The lads have gone out this year with such a great mentality and it’s just great what we’ve done,” said GB and I team captain Ashton Turner, who was a member of the beaten side last year.
“They have more than held their own against the best in Europe.
“Bradley Neil was in last year’s team as well so it’s been a great experience for both of us knowing that we have won this time. I’m very honoured to have been Captain.”
Europe’s non-playing Captain Miguel Franco de Sousa was magnanimous in defeat. “It was a great match,” he said. “GB and I played good golf. Our boys played good golf as well, it was just not good enough.
“It was a great week. The boys have had a wonderful time all week. Royal St David’s is a great venue The golf course was in absolutely top condition. It was presented beautifully and we have really enjoyed it.”
Penge clinched the vital point to get GB&I over the line with a 3 & 2 victory over Frenchman Romain Langasque after his England team mate Moore had won the first point of the afternoon.
Penge won the third and fourth and they then halved the next seven holes before he moved to three up with a winning par at the 12th. They halved the next two then Langasque won one back with a par at the 15th, only for Penge to close out the match with a winning birdie at the next.
Moore fought back from being two down after three to beat Spain’s Mario Galiano 5 and 4. He won the fourth and fifth holes with pars and the sixth, seventh and eighth with birdies to go from two down to three up. He went on to win the 10th and 12th with pars and sealed it with a par at the 14th.
Ireland’s Robin Dawson ended the match as GB and I’s best scorer with three and a half points out of four after beating France’s Nicolas Manifacier 4 and 3.
Dawson carded four birdies on the front nine to be three up. He lost the tenth, won the 11th with a birdie and the 12th with a par then, after Manifacier had dramatically holed-in-one to win the short 14th, he won the 15th with a par and the match.
Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre won his third point of the match with a 4 and 2 win over Paul Elissalde from France. There was never more than one hole in it until MacIntyre won three holes in a row from the 11th. He closed out the match with a winning par at the 16th.
GB and I Captain Turner was two up after eight in his match against Germany’s Michael Hirmer. He lost the ninth to a birdie and then three holes from the 12th to par to go two down. Turner showed character to win the 15th and 16th. The last two holes were halved to ensure half a point for each team.
The Boys Amateur Champion Ewen Ferguson was never in front against last year’s European Young Masters Champion Renato Paratore, losing 2 and 1. He was three down at the turn, won the tenth and 16th to cut the deficit to one and then lost the 17th to a birdie.
Ferguson’s foursomes partner and fellow Scot Bradley Neil also lost by two holes against Spain’s Ivan Cantero. The Spaniard was three up after seven. Neil birdied the eighth and tenth to get back to one down but Cantero won the 11th with a birdie.
Neil eagled the 12th and won the 13th to get back to all square but then lost the 14th and 16th to pars. He kept his hopes of a half point alive by winning the 17th but had to concede at the last.
Connor Syme lost to Germany’s Dominic Foos after winning the first two holes of the match with birdies.  He then lost five in a row to be three down, won the eighth and 11th to get back to one down but then lost the 13th and 15th and halved the 16th to lose 3 and 2.
In the morning foursomes Turner and Penge beat Paratore and Foos 5 and 4; Ferguson and Neil halved with Galiano and Cantero; Moore and Dawson halved with Elissalde and Langasque and MacIntyre and Syme beat Ventura and Manifacier 3 and 2.
