GREAT SCOTT! 1996 NORTHERN OPEN WINNER HENDERSON LEADS THE WAY WITH A 62 ON OPENING DAY AT MELDRUM HOUSE

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

(Who reported on the Northern Open when John Panton and Eric Brown were still playing in it)
Seventeen years after he won the title at Cruden Bay, Scott Henderson is back in the Northern Open picture.
The 43-year-old Kings Links, Aberdeen tour pro led a charge of sub-par scorers - 21 in all - on the opening day of the three-day, 72-hole Tartan Tour major at Meldrum House Golf Club, Oldmeldrum.

His figures were:
OUT - 4 4 3 4 4 3 4 3 4: 33
 IN - 2 4 4 4 3 3 5 2 2: 29
Late on a day which turned from warm and sunny, calm conditions to a very wet afternoon, Henderson posted an eight-under-par 62 to dislodge David Law, the 2011 winner as an amateur, from the lead he had held with a 63.
Out in the worst of the deteriorating, Henderson knows what it takes to win the Northern Open in bad weather. In 1996, at Cruden Bay, he won the title in gale-force winds.

He birdied the long fifth with two putts and holed a 4ft birdie putt - his first single putt of the round - at the eighth.
Henderson reached the turn in 33 of which 17 had been putts.
"I holed a raker of a putt from about 40 feet for a birdie at the 10th and got a two-putt birdie 4 at the 11th," said Henderson.
"Holed another raker from more than 30ft for a birdie 3 at the 14th.
"Did well to get a one-putt par 5 at the 16th and then finished with a pair of 2s! Hit a three-wood to 12ft at the 17th  to set up an eagle 2. Then a seven-iron to 6ft at the short 18th."
Henderson had come storming home in 29, six under par, with 14 putts on the inward half.
"My putting's been letting me down this season and I've lost confidence on the greens, leaving putts well short by being too timid.
"But today I seemed to see the lines better and some of the long putts went in.
"Been playing OK on the Tartan Tour this season, just the putting has not been as good as the rest of the game.Maybe this is the turning point.
Until Scott's after 5pm round, the clubhouse leader was David Law (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) who won the event as an amateur over the same course in 2011. David shot a seven-under-par 63 today.
Law's scorecard read:

OUT - 4 3 3 4 4 3 4 5 4 - 34
 IN - 3 4 3 3 4 3 4 3 2 - 29
Next best in the birdie-fest was Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) with a 64, followed closely by Robert Arnott (Bishopbriggs) on 65, leading amateur Jamie Savage (Cawder) and David Patrick (Kingsfield) on 66.

David Law (pictured right) birdied the last three holes and almost aced the 178yd 18th wth a seven-iron tee shot which left him with a 6in tap-in putt for a 2.
That completed an excellent collection of eight birdies and one bogey in halves of 34 (one under par) and 29 (five under).
"I know the Meldrum House course well from my amateur days when I used to come out here to see my coach Neil Marr," said David, 22.
"I like the course, I feel comfortable on it and it shows in my scores. I had a 62 the year I won the title but that was from preferred lies. I've got a good record in this tournament because the course just suits my eye."
He had birdies at the second and long fifth before dropping a shot at the eighth where he had three putts from 30ft.

David missed a 6ft putt for an eagle 3 at the long 11th but it was the first of his six birdies on a brilliant inward half. He holed from 15ft at the 12th - the longest putt he holed all day - and birdied the 13th before his hat-trick of birdies over the last three holes.

Graham Fox (pictured left) came in with a 64 before the heavy rain, which came on before lunchtime, reappeared in the late afternoon.
Fox had bogey-free halves of 31 and 33 with birdies at the first, fourth, eighth, ninth, 12th and 16th.
"I think 64 is the best I've ever managed here at Meldrum House. I played pretty steadily for it," said the West Kilbride-based 36-year-old.
Former PGA Cup player Robert Arnott had held the clubhouse lead for a short spell with a five-under 65 in which he also birdied the last three holes, holing putts of sixth, eight and six feet again.
"I had been hitting everything left so I went for a session with coach Ian Rae. Seems to have sorted it out. If anything I was hitting it a little bit too right today" said Robert with a laugh.
Now 50 and 27 years on the Tartan Tour, Arnott, from Kirkintilloch, fancies extending his playing career on the Seniors Tour but knows it is difficult to get one of only eight players' cards available each year at the Over-50s Tour Q School.
"I will have a go but eight cards means it does not leave you any margin for error."
Arnott has never failed to make the cut in the Northern Open and he is set to extend that record despite bogeys at the seventh, eighth and 14th (three putts).
Fortunately, he birdied the first, second, long fifth, long 11th, 13th and then the last three holes in halves of 34 and 31.
Defending champion James Byrne came in late (after 6.15pm) with a fighting 67
"We had the worst of the weather, no doubt about that. It started raining for us round about third or fourth hole. We didn't get the summer sunshine that the morning starters enjoyed
"It was tough near the end. So easy to drop shots when the weather is unpleasant, so after bogeying the 12th and 13th I was really pleased to birdie the 16th and 17th. Keeps me in the picture."

QUOTES OF THE DAY:

"I've golf shoes that are older than some of the guys I am playing against. When I came on the Tour 27 years ago, a par round guaranteed you a cheque.
Nowadays, a par round gets you a "Thanks for coming along."
--- ROBERT ARNOTT (now aged 50) pictured above

"It's so easy to drop shots when the weather's unpleasant."
 --- Defending champion JAMES BYRNE

"I had a bad day .. Yes, I am tired ... Everybody's tired, it's that time of the season. I reckon I've covered 1,000 miles of Scotland this year so far."
 ----GREIG HUTCHEON after a 69

"You tend to score better over courses you like, and I like Meldrum House. I feel comfortable here."
--- DAVID LAW after coming home in 29

"It was like a summer's day when we started. Look at it now - like North-east Alliance weather- lots of rain and a bit of wind."
--- SCOTT HENDERSON, Tournament leader

STAFFORDSHIRE BOYS FAIL TO BEAT YORKSHIRE ON DAY ONE

Mason banger image copyright Leaderboard PhotographyYorkshire took a major step towards defending the Boys County Championship when they beat the much fancied Staffordshire 5½ - 3½ on the opening day at Kedleston Park in Derbyshire, while Hampshire, IoW & CI came from behind to pip Devon 5-4.
“I’m proud of the boys,” said Yorkshire captain Gary Brown. “They battled hard, gave 100% and hopefully we can keep it going tomorrow. No disrespect to the other teams but I was told Staffordshire were the toughest side. Yet I would have taken any win so I’m pleased.”
Staffordshire skipper Mike Tunnicliffe knew where the battle was lost. “There were a lot of close games but the short game was the key,” he said. “We had a lot of chances but the Yorkshire lads got up-and-down more times than we did.”
After edging the morning foursomes 2-1, Yorkshire lost the top single when Robert Burlison came from 1-down with three to play to win on the final green. Boy international Burlison birdied the 16th to level then took long 17th with a par before a half on the last sealed his victory.
But Yorkshire replied with Kealan Lowe and Sam Wilkinson securing 2&1 wins over Cameron Long and Daniel Sutton respectively while Gianmarco Petrozzi kept the Midlanders in the hunt with a final green win over Jack Kelley.
Kelley raced 3-up after six holes but Petrozzi  battled back either side of the turn. He won five holes in six from the eighth to be 2-up after 13. The Staffordshire lad’s approach play was something to desire and although he lost the 16th to a par, halves on the closing two holes gave him the point.
Michael Dewsbury won the opening two holes for Staffordshire against Ben Hutchinson but the Yorkshire lad hit back to lead 2-up through 11 and again after 16 when Dewsbury three-putted. But Dewsbury won 17 with a birdie-four before Hutchinson fired his approach through the green and into sand at the last.  With Dewsbury having taken three to reach the putting surface, Hutchinson saw his escape from the bunker almost run off the front of the green and he took three more as Dewsbury’s bogey secured a half.
However, Yorkshire boy captain Ben Brewster was always ahead against Peter Booker and although this game also went the distance, it gave the Northerners another point with a 1-hole win. There was some consolation for Staffordshire as they lost 7-2 in the equivalent match last year.
Devon, in their third successive Boys County Finals, gained a 2-1 lead in the foursomes but it was a different story in the singles with the West Countrymen snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
It began badly for the south west champions when the experienced Jacob Tinsley went down to Ryan Harmer. Tinsley was 3-up through eight holes but he lost the ninth, tenth and 12th and despite going ahead again at 13, Harmer won the last three holes, two with pars before a birdie at the last secured a 2-up victory.
It was a similar story with the second game as Harry Konig built a 2-up lead on three occasions only to see Jordan Sundborg battle hard for a half.
With Billy Watson also adding to Hampshire’s tally by beating Danny Guy on the final green having been behind early on and Mason Banger (image © Leaderboard Photography) romping to a 4 and 3 win over James Thompson, the south east champions were on a roll.
They needed one more win but they had to wait as Ollie Cowl gave Devon something to smile about with a 2 and 1 victory over Josh Oddy.
In the bottom game, Tom Farrow-Smith was always ahead against Robbie Thompson, being 2-up with four to play. But credit Thompson, who covered those four holes in level par to Farrow-Smith’s three over to secure a half.
In tomorrow's matches, Yorkshire face Devon and Hampshire  take on Staffordshire.

CULTS ACADEMY RETAIN PAUL LAWRIE SCHOOLS TEAM CHALLENGE TROPHY AT PETERCULTER

Cults Academy team (left to right): Ben Henderson, Adam Fisher, Ryan McKinnon.

WORDS AND PICTURES BY DEREK JOHNSTONE

Cults Academy, represented by Adam Fisher, Ryan McKinnon and Ben Henderson, became only the second school to record back-to-back victories in the Paul Lawrie Foundation Schools’ Team Challenge Scratch Trophy at a sun-drenched Peterculter Golf Club on Monday.
Only Ellon Academy (in 2005 and 2006) could boast that achievement previously.

Team captain Adam Fisher led the way with a three-under-par 68.  Fisher, celebrating his inclusion in the Scottish schoolboys team to face England next month, had four birdies – at the first, third, fourteenth and seventeenth – and a solitary bogey at the 9th.  Team-mates Ben Henderson and Ryan McKinnon weighed in with 75 and 79 respectively for a team total of 222 and a winning margin of five strokes.
Runners-up for a second successive year were Alford Academy’s Ray Gordon (72), Kiran Nolan (75) and Gavin Elrick (80).
Robert Gordon’s College, winners in 2011 and represented this year by Michael Lawrie (77), Findlay McPherson (79) and Dylan Smith (80),finished third on 236.

Hazlehead Academy claimed the Handicap Trophy with a net score of 214. Their team players and individual scores were: Craig Leith (9) 68, Connor Brown (14) 68 and Jasmine Mackintosh (9) 78.  Speyside High School made their long journey worthwhile when they claimed the runners-up place on a card countback from Westhill Academy, after both teams had tied on 216.

ENGLAND LOOK TO LATHAM, PARTRIDGE TO BOOST EURO SENIOR TITLE HOPES IN HUNGARY

Richard Latham (Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire), newly crowned English and Scottish Seniors champion, is one of two new caps in the England six-man squad for the European Men’s Seniors Team Championships at Pannonia Golf and Country Club in Hungary on 3rd - 7th September.

The other newcomer is Richard Partridge (Wildernesse, Kent) while the rest of the team is: Charles Banks (Stanton-on-the-Wolds, Nottinghamshire), Tyrone Carter (Stevenage, Hertfordshire), Martin Galway (Brighton and Hove, Sussex), and Andrew Stracey (Denham, BB&O). The six are among the leading seven on the Titleist/FootJoy England Golf Seniors Order of Merit.

Latham (image copyright Leaderboard Photography) won the English title at Bristol & Clifton just three weeks after becoming a senior. He then added the Scottish Open Seniors at Elie before completing the hat-trick with the Lincolnshire Seniors title. He also finished tenth in the British Seniors at Royal Aberdeen and is the current leader of the England Golf Seniors Order of Merit.

The English was his first national title after a lengthy career during which he represented Hertfordshire 180 times then Lincolnshire since 2001 with distinction. He is currently the Director of Operations at Woodhall Spa Golf Club.

Partridge is in his second year as a senior and is in third place on the seniors merit list having finished equal fifth in the English Seniors, second to Latham in the Scottish and joint 11th in the British. He also represented Tonbridge in the Halford Hewitt competition.

Banks, three times a winner of the Logan Trophy, the English Mid Amateur Championship, and a former England men’s international, debuted for England at senior level in the 2011 Seniors Home Internationals. He was also in the England team for last year’s Home Internationals and this year has finished joint seventh in the English Seniors, tied 15th in the British and is currently sixth on the Seniors Order of Merit.

Carter made his seniors international debut in last year European Team Championship and is currently fifth on the Seniors Order of Merit. The Barbadian-born long-hitter was also capped by England in last year’s Seniors Home Internationals and this year finished seventh in the English Seniors and 14th in the British Seniors.

Galway, also in his second year as a senior, made his England seniors debut in last year’s European Team Championships and this year finished tied fifth in the English Seniors and joint eighth in the Welsh Seniors. His business commitments with golf company Srixon restrict his participation in other events.

Stracey made his international debut in the 2009 European Seniors Team Championships and has played in three of the last four Seniors Home Internationals. He helped Kent win the Seniors County Championship on three occasions but is now with BB&O. Currently second to Latham on the Seniors Order of Merit after winning the Welsh Open Seniors, finishing tied third in the English Seniors, joint fifth in the Irish Seniors and 11th in the British.

England will be looking to regain the European title they won in 2009 and 2010 while last year in Portugal they finished third behind Sweden, winners for the past two years.

Hi Colin
I thought your readers might be interested in watching our coverage of the first Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Challenge.
Paul played Jose Maria Olazabal over the nine-hole par-3 course at the centre on August 20.

DUNCAN STEWART RELISHES EUROPEAN TOUR EXPERIENCE

DUNCAN STEWART: "GREAT EXPERIENCE."   Picture by Stewart Grant

NEWS RELEASE FROM MB PARTNERS
Duncan Stewart finished three over par at the Johnnie Walker Championship in Gleneagles, missing the cut, which was set at three under.

It may not have been the result that the Scot had wanted, but featuring on the PGA European Tour for the first time and the experience he gained from playing on that tour was far greater.

The 29-year-old from Grantown-on-Spey, represented by MB Partners, got the invitation to play in the tournament on the Monday. In his first round on Thursday, he picked up three birdies and ended the day with an eagle on the 18th, to put him at level par 72 on the Centenary Course, which plays host to next year’s Ryder Cup.

Stewart started his second round on the back nine, scoring a birdie on the 11th to move him to one-under-par. He was able to pick up a couple more birdies over the course of the round, but unfortunately wasn’t able to find any magic in his putter causing him to slip back down the leaderboard.

“I am disappointed with how I played over the last couple of days, I just couldn’t seem to putt which was frustrating as my tee and fairway shots were pretty decent,” said Stewart.
“It was a great experience to play in the Johnnie Walker Championship and also participate in my first European Tour and hopefully this won’t be my last. I need to get back to the driving range and put in some more practice before I play in Ireland next week.”

The next tournament for Stewart will be back on the Challenge Tour in the Northern Ireland Championship at Galgorm Castle Golf Club and Estate in County Antrim from August 29th to September 1st.

CASTLE DOUGLAS WIN FOUR-BALL BETTER-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM KIRKCUDBRIGHTSHIRE GOLFERS ASSOCIATION

The final of this years 4 ball better ball championship was played over the Brighouse Bay course on Saturday.
In the final were John Boynton and Chris Healey from Southerness against Rab McWilliams and Dale Ashby from Castle Douglas.  Both pairs had won through four rounds to reach the final with seven out of the eight Stewartry clubs taking part a total of 56 players.
The Brighouse Bay course was in excellent condition and the weather was ideal for golf.  The final was a close affair with both sides not managing to gain a significant lead.  It was all square after the 17th and on the 18th green the Southerness pair had a putt to win the match.
The stage was set for a Southerness win with a downhill putt of about 6 foot to win, it was tense and although Chris Healey struck his putt well it finished overhanging the hole.  Dale Ashby sank his putt to halve the hole and take the match into sudden death.  The missed putt was to prove costly as at the 20th hole the Castle Douglas pair won the match to become the 2013 4BBB champions.
Thanks go to Brighouse Bay and in particular Jim Dougal the professional for their help and assistance in accommodating the final.
