STEVEN GILMOUR WINS FIRST AREA TITLE AT MACHRIHANISH DUNES

Steven Gilmour (centre) alongside Youths' runner up Alistair McLean and  5th placed Bobby Willan

Steven Gilmour of Lochgilphead Golf Club won his first area title by claiming the 2013 stroke play championship at a blustery Machrihanish Dunes.
Frequent heavy showers made conditions difficult with scoring in the morning round very high - 75 being the early leader. Afternoon scoring was slightly better with Steven posting another 75 for a 150 total. Shortly after Machrihanish's Alan O'Neil who was recently selected for the Scotland senior team posted an identical total, which meant that a playoff for the second year running
Both players birdied the first play off hole. Steven secured victory at the next hole with a par.

In 3rd place was Bute 's Graham Bolton with 151 , closely followed by Scottish boys and youths champion Bob MacIntyre on 152. Bob again captured the area youths title run in conjunction with the event.

LUNA OVER THE MOON WITH SCOTTISH SENIOR OPEN VICTORY

SANTIAGO LUNA ... once beat Tiger Woods at St Andrews

REPORT BY STEVE TODD
European Senior Tour Press Officer
Santiago Luna held off a determined challenge from former Ryder Cup Captain Sam Torrance to win the SSE Scottish Senior Open and seal a memorable return to St Andrews, 15 years after defeating Tiger Woods at the Home of Golf in the Dunhill Cup.
The Spaniard carded a closing one under par round of 71 to finish on five under par 211, one shot clear of Torrance, who designed the championship course at Fairmont St Andrews, and Irishman Denis O’Sullivan, who at 65 would have become the second oldest winner in the history of the European Senior Tour.
Home favourite Torrance, an 11-time winner on the Senior Tour, turns 60 next Saturday, but his bid for one more victory in his 50s came up just short, as Luna landed his maiden Senior Tour title in just his sixth event.
“It is difficult to explain how I feel,” said Luna, whose only European Tour victory was the 1995 Madeira Islands Open. “It has been a long time. On a golf course like this, it is very tough to win.
“Yesterday was very tough with the rain, but I putted so well. I’m so happy to win, especially somewhere like this because it is difficult for me to play here. In Madrid, we don’t have this sort of wind.
“I love Scotland and it is special to win in St Andrews. I feel unbelievable.”
Luna, whose previous best finish on the Senior Tour was tied eighth in the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open, enjoyed one of his career highs over the Old Course in St Andrews when he beat Woods 71-72 in the semi-final of the 1998 Dunhill Cup, helping Spain reach the final where they eventually lost to South Africa.
“This is a different story to beating Tiger Woods,” he said. “That one was good, not because I beat Tiger, only because I got my point to get through to the final. That was an unbelievable week with José María Olazábal and Miguel Angel Jiménez. I know that if I play Tiger 90 times he would win 89 times, but that one was mine.
“I’ve been playing on The European Tour for the last few years and I’ve felt I’ve had nothing to say to anyone because I’d lost my generation, but now I’m back with my generation and it is great to win.”
With wind gusting up to 20mph making playing conditions challenging, the lead changed hands several times across the final round. Early pacesetter O’Sullivan was hoping to become only the second player after Neil Coles to win on the Senior Tour past the age of 65, but bogeys on the 14th and 17th saw him eventually slip from the top of the leadboard, before the Irishman finished with a birdie on the last for a level par 72 and a share of second place.
Torrance, the last Scot to win the SSE Scottish Senior Open title seven years ago, said he struggled in the wind using a long putter, and after a birdie on the 12th moved him to within one shot of the lead, his challenge was dented with a three-putt from 15 feet on the 13th.
He hit back with a birdie on the next hole, holing a 40ft putt before another costly bogey on the 16th hole, which Luna then birdied to move two shots clear.
Torrance finished with a birdie on the last for a two under par 72, meaning Luna only had to make a par five on the 18th for victory. The 50 year old’s approach ran off the back off the green into the light rough and he left his chip 25ft short, but then putted to a foot before tapping in to claim the €43,485 first prize.
For Torrance, the consolation was a first top five finish since the MCB Tour Championship at the end of the 2011 season - a performance he attributed to some advice given to him by his father Bob, the influential swing coach.
“It was tough out there,” he said. “Yesterday was tough with the rain, but today was the hardest day without doubt.
“I’m delighted with how I played. Thanks Dad! It’s my last tournament in my 50s so I’m pleased.
“It was a nightmare out there with the long putter in the wind but I holed two crackers on 17 and 18 – a five footer for par on 17 and an eight footer for birdie on 18.”
Australian Peter Fowler, who took a one shot lead into the final round, fell back after a double bogey five on the par three sixth, signing for a two over par 74 to finish two shots back on three under par in a share of fourth place with English pair Peter Mitchell (73) and Philip Golding (70).
Barry Lane, who won back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011, was the only player to break 70, carding a closing 69 to finish on level par in a share of tenth position.

EWEN FERGUSON WINS BRITISH BOYS TITLE AT ROYAL LIVERPOOL

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R AND A
Ewen Ferguson has become the first Scot to win the British boys' amateur championship in almost a decade.
The 17-year-old from Bearsden came from three down after the first five holes to defeat the German Michael Hirmer, a pupil at Loretto School near Musselburgh, by 10 and 9 in the 36-hole final at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake).
It was a result which made Ferguson the first Scottish winner since Jordan Findlay defeated Tom Sherreard 2 and 1 at Conwy in Caernarvonshire back in 2004 and it reversed the result on the last occasion a Scot met a German in the Boys Amateur final, when Bernhard Neumann beat Findlay on the Scot’s defence of his title at Hunstanton in 2005.
This year’s final ended one hole earlier than last year when Matthew Fitzpatrick, who won the Silver medal as the leading amateur at the 2013 Open Championship, beat Welshman, Henry James, by 10 & 8 in the final at Notts Golf Club (Hollinwell).
It was also the most one-sided result since 1974 when Toby Shannon, who was a spectator this week, unexpectedly defeated Sandy Lyle by the same margin at Royal Liverpool.
“This is absolutely amazing,” said the new champion after recording a regulation par on the 27th hole to defeat his demoralised German opponent.
“I’ve worked hard over the last two years and this has made it all worthwhile.
“It is a great moment for me and it’s even more special because my family have come down to see it. Mum and dad have made a lot of sacrifices for me over the years and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for everything they have done.
“The funny thing is I never seem to play well when dad’s watching,” he added. “My golf was terrible first thing this morning but as soon as dad disappeared about the 5th hole I started to play well.”
The first round of the final began in a brisk 20 mile per hour wind and it was the German who was first to acclimatise to the conditions. He went one up with a solid par at the 372-yard par-4 2nd and then doubled that advantage when the Scot failed to extricate himself from a greenside bunker on the par-3 4th.
Hirmer went on to win the 5th with a regulation par but Ferguson started his fightback with a 35-foot birdie putt across the green on the 6th and then won both the 7th and the 8th to get back to all square for the first time since the 2nd.
The wind was still howling across the course as Ferguson won the 10th but he gave back a hole with a wayward drive on the 12th before starting his charge for the clubhouse by holing an 18-foot putt for a birdie to win the par-3 13th.
The Scot was suddenly exuding much more confidence than he had been when he started out in the morning and he went two up when he birdied the 15th before hitting a wonderful 3-wood into the heart of the green at the 17th.
Hirmer seemed to have the upper hand when Ferguson hit a 3-wood 310-yards into a fairway bunker on the 18th but both players hit their second shots into the same greenside bunker and it was the Scot who emerged with a four hole lead at lunch when he hit out to 16-feet and holed the putt for an unlikely par.
Ferguson was three-under-par for the last 14 holes of his morning round and he was two-under-par in the afternoon by the time he claimed the match on the 27th hole.
The Scot won the first hole of the second round when Hirmer hit his second shot into the deep rough that guards the left of the green. He went on to win the 20th hole with a birdie and then went seven up when Hirmer missed the green on the par-3 22nd
The German did get one hole back when he holed out from 9-feet for a birdie on the 23rd but the writing was on the wall when Ferguson won three holes in a row from the 24th and it all ended on the 27th when the players halved the hole in regulation par-4s.
“I started well this morning but then lost it a bit,” admitted the German. “It’s been a long week and I think it all just caught up with me in the end.
“I’m disappointed but after my 81 in the first round of qualifying if you told me I’d reach the final, I wouldn’t have believed you. That’s what I’m going to have to remember when I think about it tonight.”
Hirmer’s consolation was that he won the Peter Garner Bowl, awarded to the player aged under 17 who progresses furthest in the Championship.
The 2014 Boys Amateur Championship will be played at Prestwick and Dundonald Links in Scotland from 12-17 August.

TITLE WINNER INNES REVEALS HE WAS CLOSE TO WITHDRAWING LAST THURSDAY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Bryan Innes, playing over his home course, led almost all the way to win the North-east District Open golf championship by a single shot at Murcar Links today.
It was the 43-year-old Aberdeen wealth manager's third win in the tournament, following up his previous wins in 1999 (at Peterhead) and 2002 (also at Murcar Links).
Bryan, who gained his only cap 10 years ago, used his local knowledge to cope best of all with a wind which was at its fiercest on Saturday morning, when it was laced with rain, but was still blowing the CSS up to 76 for the third and fourth rounds over the par 71 lay-out.
Innes led by two after an opening one-over-par 72; was joined in the lead on 143 by Craig Ross (Kirkhill) at halfway; then went two clear again after a third-round 73 to Ross's 75.
Innes extended his lead to six shots when he birdied the fourth as all of the other contenders dropped shots right, left and centre.

But that was the high point of the final round for Innes. He bogeyed the fifth, sixth, 10th and the  13th before a double bogey at the 15th and a 4 at the short 16th saw his big lead almost disappear.
Sam Binning emerged as Inne's most dangerous rival. The Ranfurly Castle man moved ominously closer and closer to Innes with a birdies at the ninth, 14th and 15th in a three-under-par run.
Then Binning made the slip that was to scupper his chances - a double bogey 5 at the short 16th.
Binning went on to finish with a 74 for the clubhouse lead on 10-over-par 294.
The tiring Innes needed a par 4 to win by one shot ... and, after leaving his approach putt from the fringe four or five feet short of the hole, he stepped up and rammed home the next one for a 77 and victory by one shot with a total of 293.
"I'm absolutely drained," said Bryan after he had handed in his scorecard. Four rounds in two days of strong winds took its toll on me in the closing stages and I was fortunate that all the players at the top of the scoreboard were having bogeys and double bogeys just like me.

"To think that on Thursday morning I was on the point of withdrawing from the tournament because I was not playing well.
I decided I would go and see Frank Coutts, the Deeside pro, to see if he could sort me out quickly - and he did."
