FOOS v ELLIS IN THIRD ROUND OF BRITISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM THE R AND A WEBSITE
Dominic Foos claimed a place in the third round of the Boys Amateur Championship at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) but the 16-year-old German needed to battle all the way before he ended the challenge of brave Frenchman Edgar Catherine on the 19th hole. The German No. 1 will now play 2012 English Amateur Champion, Harry Ellis, from Marriott Meon Valley, in the third round after the Hampshire player beat Jamie Dick from Forest Hills by 2 and 1
That is just one of several attractive matches in tomorrow’s draw with French international Paul Elissalde playing against leading qualifier Jack Hermeston from the City of Newcastle and the hugely talented Italian, Renato Paratore, taking on Alister Balcombe, from Clevedon.
There is also a junior version of the finale in the Home Internationals at Ganton with English international Jack Singh Brar, from Brokenhurst Manor, taking on his Scottish counterpart Ewen Ferguson from Bearsden
The plus-6 handicap Foos started this year’s Championship as one of the favourites and he quickly lived up to that billing when he played the first 13 holes of his second round match against Catherine in three-under-par.
Foos had barely put a foot wrong at that stage but he drove into a bunker to lose the 460-yard par-4 15th, lost the long 16th to a birdie four and then also dropped a shot at the 18th before squeezing into the third round when Catherine three-putted from 40-feet on the 19th hole.
It was a tough match,” said the relieved reigning German Junior champion from St Leon-Rot. “Edgar played some great golf over the closing few holes but I wasn’t worried because I knew I’d get another chance.
“It was all a bit close but I got through in the end.”
Foos will now play Ellis in tomorrow’s third round in a repeat of this year’s final at the French International Boys Championship at St Cloud where the German emerged as the 4 & 2 victor.
Ellis lost the first two holes of his second round match against Dick but got back to level with a birdie on the 378-yard par-4 four 6th before playing the next nine holes in three-under-par.
The 17-year-old Englishman lost the 16th after driving into trouble and then hitting his approach into a greenside bunker but he went on to recover from another errant tee shot to close out the match with a par on the 17th hole.
“I hit my opening tee shot out-of-bounds and then lost the second as well but after that I played some very good golf,” said the 2012 English champion. “It’s great to get through and even better to be playing Dominic. I’m looking forward to our re-match.”
The biggest victory of the day came from Italy’s Renato Paratore, who won last year’s European Young Masters in Hungary and, in June, battled his way through to the quarter finals of The Amateur Championship at Royal Cinque Ports before losing by two holes to former American Junior champion, Jim Liu.
Paratore is renowned as one of the fastest players on the amateur circuit and he certainly made quick work of his second round opponent Alan De Bondt from Belgium by beating him 7 and 6.
De Bondt won the long third with a birdie but from then on the 16-year-old from Rome took complete control. He birdied the 7th, 8th and 11th and with De Bondt dropping shots on the 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th the end came when Paratore secured a regulation par-4 on the 450-yrd 12th.
Late in the day Irish Boys’ champion Robin Dawson, from Faithlegg, birdied the last three holes to tie his match against compatriot, Gareth Lappin, from Belvoir Park, and then won the match on the 19th hole when his unfortunate opponent hit his second shot out-of-bounds. It was the first time Dawson had been ahead in the whole match. He will now play Scotland’s Adam Fisher for a place in the last-16.
The shot of the day came from Germany’s Michael Hirmer who had a hole-in-one on the 161-yard par-3 13th hole on his way to beating Drayton Park’s Cameron Long by two holes. Hirmer’s ace came after the German had taken control of the match with three consecutive birdies from the 8th but he went on to lose the 12th, 13th and 15th before sealing victory with a birdie three down the last. His next opponent is Hampus Nilsson from Sweden.
Players from a total of eight different countries have battled their way through to the last 32 of this year’s Boys Amateur Championship. England top the list with 15 contenders followed by Spain, Scotland and Germany with three, two from France and Ireland and one apiece from Belgium, Sweden and Italy.

McKECHNIE AND ZACK SALTMAN HAVE £10,000 CHANCE

cid:image004.jpg@01CE45DE.EB21F310

Colm Moriarty will take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Sweetspot Classic after shooting a second-round 65, five under par, in the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour event at Longhirst Hall in Northumberland.
The Irishman is eight under for the 36 holes so far with Paul McKechnie, winner at Moray last month, second on seven under after signing for a four-under 66 on Thursday.
Zack Saltman began the day with a one-stroke lead but is now two behind after a one-over-par second round on the par-70 Lakes Course at Longhirst.
Moriarty (Glasson Hotel and Golf Club) was three under after the first round and got his second 18 underway with three consecutive birdies from the first. A bogey on the seventh was the first of two blemishes, with a shot also dropped on the seventeenth.
However, an eagle on the par-four 11th and birdies at 14 and 18 took Moriarty to 66 and a one-stroke lead ahead of Friday’s third and final round.
McKechnie (Braid Hills Golf Centre) also began day two three under par, and shot five birdies and one bogey to move to second on the leaderboard on seven under par.
Saltman (Archerfield Links) had shot a course-record 63 for his opening round but lost his lead with a double bogey on the fourth. A birdie on the par-three tenth was quickly cancelled out with a bogey at 11, but a second birdie of the round came on the 16th and the Scotsman is two behind leader Moriarty.
George Woolgar (Capitalservices) goes into the final round three off the lead on five under par with rounds of 67 and 68. Daniel Wardrop (Didsbury Golf Club) completes the top five on four under.
A cut to the leading 50 players plus ties has now been made, with all golfers with a 36-hole score of four over par or better proceeding to play Friday’s final round, after which the winner will collect £10,000 and a brand new Motocaddy trolley.
Spectator entry to the event is free throughout the week, and Sky Sports HD will film Friday’s final round for a highlights programme to be shown on Tuesday, August 27, repeated three times on Wednesday, August 28.

England poised for victory after demolishing Wales

Image copyright Leaderboard PhotographyEngland are favourites to regain the Raymond Trophy at Ganton tomorrow after demolishing Wales 11-4 on day two of the Home Internationals, supported by Fairstone Financial Management Ltd, while Ireland overcame reigning champions Scotland 6½ – 8½.
Just a draw with the Scots tomorrow will see England as champions, while Scotland need to win. Ireland, could still feature if they can copy England’s win over Wales.
After losing the foursomes 2-3 with some indifferent play, the English players came out after lunch with all guns blazing. The morning setback was a wake-up call and they turned the contest on its head by winning all but one of the ten singles.
“This morning was not pleasant,” said England captain Terry Casey. “We didn’t play our best but all credit to Wales for their good play. We had a few words at lunch and there was a complete turnaround. The boys played to their true potential and I couldn’t fault them this afternoon.
“Now, it’s in our own hands. We know it won’t be easy. It never is against the Scots. They are strong in depth and they won’t give us anything as we found in the Europeans in Denmark.”
From the first tee-off in the afternoon England were generally in charge. Ryan Evans (image copyright Leaderboard Photography) was certainly that. He covered the front nine in 31 strokes with an eagle and four birdies to be 7-up against Craig Melding, the Wellingborough man eventually winning 7 and 6.
The rest of the team seem to feed off that. New English champion Callum Shinkwin romped 5-up through seven holes against Jason Shufflebotham and eventually ran out a 4 and 3 winner as did Ben Stow over Mike Hearne after being 3-up at the turn.
Jimmy Mullen, used only in the singles, maintained his 100% record with a 4 and 2 win over Welsh champion Jack Bush, Harry Casey completed his fourth successive victory, 4 and 3 over Richard James, while Toby Tree twice built a three hole lead to beat Matthew Moseley 3 and 2.
There were also wins for Nick Marsh and Pat Howard, while Craig Hinton came back from 2-down to Ben Westgate too win on the last green. There was consolation for Wales when Alastair James got the better of Michael Saunders by 2 and 1.
Ireland put a spanner in Scotland’s works when they came from behind to beat the reigning champions after trailing 2-3 from the morning foursomes.
They took command in the afternoon, winning six of the singles and halving another to see the lads in green to their winning 8½ points.
“We were very disappointed to lose to England yesterday but today we played a lot better,” said Ireland captain Padraig Hogan. “We are still struggling with our foursomes pairings but we won all the tight matches today and you need a bit of luck
“This course is fantastic. The greens are getting faster and faster and it is the player who is most patient who comes out on top. We are relying on Scotland to beat England tomorrow but the outcome is going to be very tight.”
Brian Casey led the way for the Irish in the singles with a 4 and 3 win over James Ross then Gavin Moynihan took the top game 2 and 1 against Graeme Robertson. Moynihan was 3-up after going out in two-under-par 34 and although Robertson pegged it back, the end came at the 17th.
Dermot McElroy found himself two behind early on to Jack McDonald, who was also out in 34, thanks to an eagle at the ninth and 1-up. McElroy levelled with a birdie-two on the tenth, went ahead with another on 12 and they swopped further birdies until a par on the last saw McElroy take the point by 1 hole.
However, the Scots were not to be denied. Grant Forrest edged past Kevin Phelan 2 and 1 and Alex Culverwell secured their biggest winning margin, 4 and 3 over Cormac Sharvin.
Scott Borrowman trailed most of the way against Ireland’s Reeve Whitson and was still 2-down with four to play. But the Scot took the 15th with a par and 17 with a birdie to secure a half.
With Bradley Neil earning the Scots another point with a 3 and 2 win over Gary Hurley the battle wasn’t over. However, Pat Dunne led Daniel Young all the way to win 3 and 2 and Rory McNamara did the same against Matthew Clark.
It was left to Jack Hume to see Ireland over the line by turning his game around when it must have seemed lost. Scott Crichton was 4-up at the turn but Hume found his form on the back nine, winning four holes-in-a-row from the tenth, two with birdies, to get back level and although Crichton led again with a birdie at 14, Hume covered the last three holes in par to win by 1 hole.
