GOOD DAY FOR SCOTS ON PGA EUROPRO TOUR AT LONGHIRST

NEWS RELEASE FROM PGA EUROPRO TOUR

Zack Saltman shot a course-record 63 on the par-70 Lakes Course at Longhirst Hall Golf Club to take a one-stroke lead at the end of the opening round of the Sweetspot Classic, the tenth event of the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour season.

Saltman (Archerfield Links Golf Club) had brother Lloyd as his caddy on his impressive round as he surged ahead of the field with six birdies and an eagle, slipping up only on the 17th where he took bogey five.

The other story of the day was Paul Doherty (Vale Hotel), who shot six birdies and had a hole in one on the back nine. His incredible finish took him to second, one off the lead after he opened with two bogeys and signed for a 64.

The Scotsman has been in form recently and with three top ten finishes already this season he’ll take a strong position on the Order of Merit should he register his first 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour win of the year this week.

Speaking after his round, leader Saltman said: “I holed a lot of putts today, but I had given myself chances today which was nice. I made an eagle on ten, a drivable par four, and my only bogey of the day was 17 but it was good to finish with a birdie at the last and get my score back up.

“I had Lloyd on my bag today and it must have helped. It was good and I was relaxed out there and then Lloyd knows what he is doing, he is a great player so it was good to have him out there.”

Two players are tied for third after opening-round 64s at Longhirst Hall. Mathew Webb (www.webbysgolf.co.uk) had four birdies, and eagle and two bogeys on his opening 18, while Todd Adcock (The Nevill Golf Club) was unblemished and broke par at three, ten, 11 and 15.

Spectator entry to the event is free throughout the week, and Sky Sports HD will film Friday’s final round for a highlights programme to be shown on Tuesday, August 27, repeated three times on Wednesday, August 28.

HERMESTON LEADS MATCH PLAY QUALIFIERS AT BRITISH BOYS

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R AND A
England’s Jack Hermeston led the qualifiers at the end of the stroke play stage of the 2013 Boys Amateur Championship at Royal Liverpool and Wallasey.
The R&A
The 17-year-old former English Under-16’s champion from the City of Newcastle Golf Club carded a five-under-par 67 at Wallasey to add to his opening two-over-par 74 at Royal Liverpool to claim a one shot lead over compatriots Robert Burlison and Samuel Wilkinson on three-under-par 141.
Burlison (Oxley Park) shot a fine three-under-par 69 at Royal Liverpool to share second place alongside Wilkinson (Fulford) after both men finished on two-under-par 142 while Lindrick’s Jonathan Thomson also kept the English flag flying by adding a 73 to his opening 70 at Wallasey to claim sole possession of fourth place on one-under-par 143.
Further down the leaderboard one of the biggest moves of the day came from 15- year-old German Boys’ champion, Dominic Foos, from St Leon-Rot, who also carded a five-under-par 67 at Wallasey to jump up into a share of fifth place on level par 144 alongside a group of three English internationals comprising 2013 Carris Trophy champion Ben Amor (Marlborough), Ashton Turner (Kenwick Park) and first round leader Hadyn McCullen from Delamere Forest.
Amor also broke 70 with a three-under-par 69 at Wallasey, Turner fired a one-under-par 71 at Wallasey but McCullen could not replicate his fireworks from the previous day and had to settle for a five-over-par 77.
Hermeston won the 2011 English Under-16s Championship (McGregor Trophy) in his home county of Northumberland and he will now have his eyes on an even bigger prize after carding six birdies on the rugged Wallasey links.
He opened his account with birdies on the 394-yard par-4 3rd and the 535-yard par-5 4th but then dropped his only shot of the day at the 5th before firing further birdies at the 6th, 7th, 14th and 17th to match Foos for the best round of the day.
18-year-old Burlison had opened with a one-over-par 73 at Wallasey but then carded a three-under-par 69 at Royal Liverpool to catapult himself into a share of second place on two-under-par 142.
The English international went out in the third group on the course at 7.22am before the wind was much of a factor. He dropped a shot at the 5th hole but got it back with a birdie on the 8th and then raced home in 33 with birdies at the 13th, the 14th and the 16th.
“I played very solidly,” said Burlison who tied for 6th place behind compatriot, Amor, at the recent Carris Trophy. “I started off pretty slowly but soon got into my stride.
“It was an early start. I had to get up at 5.15am this morning but it probably helped because we didn’t have much wind out there. I’d say the courses are probably playing two-three shots easier than they were yesterday but you’ve still to hit the ball solid and that’s what I did today.
“It’s mission accomplished,” he added. “The goal over the last two days was simply to get into the match play stages and that’s what I’ve done.”
Wilkinson carded a best-of-the-day 70 round Royal Liverpool on the opening day and 24 hours later added a level par 72 at Wallasey in which he registered three birdies and three bogeys.
“It’s just good to get through,” said the 16-year-old from Fulford. “I’m looking forward to the match play.”
France’s Jeremy Gandon, England’s Gareth Lappin, Rhys Thompson and Cameron Long Germany’s Hurly Long, and Spaniard’s Ivan Cantero and Manuel Elvira shared ninth place on one over par 145 but England’s Jordon Wrisdale, Jack Merry and Adam Chapman, Italy’s Lorenzo Scalise, France’s Matthieu Caron, Ireland’s Jake Whelan, Scotland’s Ben Kinsley and Alexander Wilson and Otto Mand from Wales all faced an anxious wait before they squeezed into the match play stages on seven over par 152.
The cut fell on that mark and among the players to miss out on a place in the match play stages were France’s Kenny Subregis, who led the qualifiers two years ago at Burnham & Berrow and Enmore Park, and Welshman, Tim Harry, who won this year’s Duncan Putter, aged just 15, and has since represented his country at men’s level.
Home hopes were also dashed when both Royal Liverpool’s Matthew Jordan (75-79) and Wallasey’s Cameron Massey (81-75) failed to make it through the stroke play qualifier.

SCOTLAND START HOME INTERNATIONALS WITH WIN OVER WALES

Good Evans, England shade it over Irish
Image Jimmy Mullen copyright Leaderboard PhotographyEngland, looking to regain the title they lost to Scotland a year ago, were taken all the way by Ireland on the opening day of the Home Internationals supported by Fairstone Financial Management at Ganton but managed to edge home 8-7 while Scotland beat Wales more easily.
England managed to stay just in front throughout after they built a two point lead in the morning foursomes. But Ireland took the singles, underlining how close a match it was.
“Playing the Irish is never easy,” said England captain Terry Casey. “I knew there wasn’t a weakness in their side and it was a close call. Too close for comfort in fact. Well played the Irish but we gained some important wins and the standard of golf was very good.”
The foursomes finished 3½ – 1½ in England’s favour and they were given a great start in the afternoon by new cap Ryan Evans, who beat Paul Dunne 6 and 5. The Irishman was not firing on all cylinders but Evans was quick to punish any slips and he was 4-up after seven holes which he covered in two under.
Evans also won the eighth, ninth and tenth to go 7-up and although he lost the 12th to a par, the Wellingborough man sealed victory on the 13th.
Jimmy Mullen (image copyright Leaderboard Photography), another new cap, will remember his debut, beating Gary Hurley 4 and 2, the Devon man birdying the tenth and 11th and being three under when the contest ended on the 16th.
English champion Callum Shinkwin went 1-up early on against Kevin Phelan and the lead swung one way then the other in a close tussle that ended all square.

But Reeve Whitson gained another point for the Irish after trailing 3-down to Craig Hinton.
The Oxford man was 2-up with four to play but lost the last three holes as Whitson got home by one hole.

The Irish were fighting back and Dermot McElroy beat a wayward Ben Stow 3 and 2 while Brian Casey was always ahead against Paul Howard, eventually winning by one hole. It might have been more but the Irishman, 3-up after 14, lost a ball off the tee at 15 and also lost 17 to a Howard par before getting home.
At one stage during the afternoon England supporters were wondering where the other wins were going to come from. But Toby Tree came from 2-down to beat Cormac Sharvin by 1-hole and it needed a 5 and 3 triumph from Harry Casey over Chris Selfridge to see England over the line.
Gavin Moynihan completed Ireland’s tally with a 3 and 1 win over Nick Marsh, the Yorkshire lad prolonging the match by winning the 15th and 16th after being dormie four.
Scotland began the defence of the Raymond Trophy with a 9½ – 5½ win over Wales after dropping only half a point from the morning foursomes.
With such a big lead going into the singles, it seemed that the afternoon might be a stroll in the park for the Scots. But it didn’t work out that way and credit the Welsh for a fine fightback.
“I’m delighted with the win,” said Scotland captain Scott Knowles. “There is never an easy match in international golf and although we built a good lead in the foursomes the Welsh came out in the afternoon and gave us a good game.
“Perhaps their young side were a little nervous in the morning but my side will have learned a lot from the afternoon singles. We want to defend the title and my team is more than capable of performing.”
They were given a fine start by Jason Shufflebotham who lost the opening hole but came back to beat Graeme Robertson 3 and 2 in the top game only for the ever reliable Jack McDonald to overwhelm Welsh champion Jack Bush 6 and 5.
Grant Forrest and James Ross added to the Scottish tally with 3 and 2 wins over Matthew Moseley and Lee Jones respectively but the Welsh replied with three wins of their own.
Craig Melding went 2-up through four holes and 3-up after seven against Alexander Culverwell but the Scottish champion cut the deficit to 1-down through 11. However, Melding regained the advantage and ran out a 3 and 2 winner.
Zac Galliford was locked in a close encounter with Scott Crichton but after gaining the lead on the sixth, stayed ahead but Crichton fought back from 2-down to win the 16thwith a birdie and 17 with a par only for Galliford to secure the match on 18 with a winning bogey five.
David Boote added to the Welsh morale with a 6 and 4 win over Ewan Scott, the Welshman finishing with back-to-back birdies and five under par for 14 holes.
But the Scots were not to be denied and Scott Borrowman saw them over the line with a 2 and 1 win against Alistair Jones while the final two games were shared on the 18th, Matthew Clark adding to the Scottish tally with a 1-hole win over Ben Westgate while Richard James scored the final Welsh point by the same margin against Bradley Neil.
Tomorrow England play Wales while the Scots face Ireland.

PAUL LAWRIE v JOSE MARIA OLAZABAL EXHIBITION MATCH ON AUGUST 20

NEWS RELEASE

Paul Lawrie and Jose Maria Olazabal will go head-to-head in the first staging of this brand new event at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre on Tuesday 20th August.

Paul will be re-united with his Captain from The Ryder Cup Matches last September (The Miracle at Medinah) in the inaugural Challenge which will see the two take part in an exhibition game over the 9-hole layout on the south banks of the River Dee, which is also the home of Paul’s Charitable Foundation.

On the eve of Paul’s Johnnie Walker Championship title defence, Paul and Olazabal will do battle in this newly created fixture.  The event, to be held annually, will see Paul take-on some of the European Tour’s finest over his testing home venue.

The Challenge will tee-off at 11am and the event is open to the public free of charge

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR

JOSÉ MARIA OLAZÁBAL AND SAM TORRANCE NAMED AS CAPTAINS
FOR THE SEVE TROPHY PRESENTED BY GOLF+

Spain’s José María Olazábal and Sam Torrance of Scotland have been named as the captains for The Seve Trophy presented by Golf+.

Paul McGinley, the current European Ryder Cup Captain, selected the duo to lead the respective Continental Europe and Great Britain and Ireland teams in the newly-named contest – formerly the Vivendi Seve Trophy – which will be played at St-Nom-La Bretèche Golf Club in France from October 3-6.

The change of tournament title reflects the fact that, having sponsored the past two editions, Vivendi has agreed the transfer of the role of presenting sponsor of the tournament to Canal Plus’ dedicated golf channel GOLF+.

It also means a return to St-Nom-La Bretèche, the Parisian venue which has hosted the past two editions. GB&I triumphed on both of those occasions and will defend the trophy after McGinley himself led them to a 15½-12½ victory two years ago.

Olazábal and Torrance will bring a wealth of experience to the captaincy positions, not least for the fact they have both enjoyed the special thrill of being a winning Ryder Cup captain; Torrance leading Europe to a memorable 15 ½ - 12 ½ triumph at The Belfry in 2002, while Olazábal was the architect of the sensational ‘Miracle at Medinah’ last September where Europe recovered from a 10-6 deficit going into the final day singles to win 14 ½ - 13 ½.

“I am delighted to name José María and Sam as captains,” said McGinley, who will have an overseeing role during the week at St-Nom-La Bretèche. “They are two men I have the utmost respect for and who I’ve benefitted from over the years. I know they will do a fine job.

“I have shared many special moments with both of them but obviously, having Sam as captain for my Ryder Cup debut in 2002 was particularly memorable, as was being one of José María’s vice-captains for that extraordinary week at Medinah last year.

“I have said many times that this is a tournament close to my heart, both as a player and as a captain, and I am delighted that all the parties involved have worked so hard behind the scenes to ensure this year’s event will go ahead. From a playing perspective in particular, it gives the players vital insight into the pressures associated with being part of a team and therefore having other guys depending on you.

“It is totally different to the normal pressures of week in-week out tournament golf and, as a result, the younger players especially benefit from having experienced captains to steer them through. Therefore, I can say for certain, that the 20 guys who eventually make this year’s teams will learn a lot from José María and Sam, as I have done.”

Olazábal, who will undertake his second stint as captain in the contest, having been at the helm at The Wynyard Club in 2005 when his Continental European side went down to Colin Montgomerie’s GB&I team, said: “Everyone knows how much I love team golf such as this and therefore it was a big honour when I got the call.

“I have a great relationship with Paul as I have with everyone involved at Medinah. This will be a great way to say thanks to everyone there and pay them back,” added the Spaniard who, aside from his Ryder Cup captaincy triumph, was also part of three winning European Ryder Cup teams – 1987, 1997 and 2006 – in addition to his 23 European Tour titles.

“Everyone knew my relationship with Seve, through both The Ryder Cup and this contest, and therefore to be part again of team golf again will be great. It’s always good to see players in a match play format and it is a great experience for them. It benefitted my Ryder Cup team and we will have a group of players in France with the potential to play in the next Ryder Cup and beyond.

“I think I will have a very strong team. We have a lot of players who are playing well, such as Miguel Angel Jiménez and Thomas Björn, and some of the younger guys too. So I am very much looking forward to the challenge.”

Torrance, who will captain a team in The Seve Trophy presented by Golf+ for the first time, said: “It’s a great honour. It’s been 11 years since I took charge of The Ryder Cup team and so you can imagine I’m really looking forward to this – it’s tremendous.

“I’ve been keeping an eye on what has been going on, and so it will be a real privilege to be involved at the helm once again,” added the Scot who, aside from his Ryder Cup captaincy success at The Belfry in 2002, was also part of three winning European Ryder Cup teams – 1985, 1987 and 1995 – and is the man who holds the record for the most European Tour appearances in history with 706.

“It will also be special to go up against Ollie as I’ve known him all my golfing life. But I also know it will be a tough challenge as we all saw the help he got from Seve at Medinah! Seriously though, it’s wonderful to be part of Seve’s heritage and legacy through an event I know he was a huge fan of.

“As for the match itself, there is a wealth of talent out there so I’m really looking forward to working with some of the British and Irish boys we currently have on Tour. We’ve won six on the trot, so you know I will be going all out to try and make that seven.”

The Seve Trophy presented by Golf+, which was first played at Sunningdale Golf Club in England in 2000, was instigated by the late Seve Ballesteros as a team competition to be contested in non-Ryder Cup years.

Qualification for both teams began at the Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa in December 2012, and will conclude after the 70° Open d'Italia on September 22. Each team will then be chosen from the leading five eligible players from the Official World Gold Ranking on Monday September 23, and the leading five eligible players from The Race to Dubai.

The event format will be similar to previous editions, the only slight alteration coming on Saturday which will now see two sessions of four foursomes contested instead of four morning greensomes followed by four afternoon foursomes. The rest of the format remains the same with a series of five fourball matches on each of the first two days and ten singles on the final day. As with The Ryder Cup, a team requires 14 ½ points for victory.

Continental Europe won the first edition of the contest 13 years ago, while Great Britain and Ireland have won the last six matches in succession.
