PAUL LAWRIE MAKES THE OPEN CUT .... SITTING AT HOME IN BIELDSIDE!

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Paul Lawrie improved by 12 shots with a second-round, two-under-par 69 in the second round of the Open at Muirfield today.

That meant he made the halfway cut right on the limit mark of
eight-over-par 150.
Trouble is Paul was sitting comfortably at home in Bieldside, to the west of Aberdeen and about 160 miles north of Gullane.  by the time the cut figure was finalised.
As the 1999 Open champion at Carnoustie said in his website blog:

" Hit it really nicely this morning to shoot 69 -2 to finish +8 overall , the pins were a little easier but the course was still very tough , we had a quick bite to eat in the players lounge then headed up the road , we're now watching it on TV with the cut creeping closer to us."

Paul did not resume that blog once he knew he had qualified but we can presume he loaded his golf gear back into his car and drove back down again to wherever he had booked out from, thinking he had missed the cut - which, to be fair, was estimated at only four or five over when he left the course.
Because there's only half the original field to get round on Saturday and Sunday, play does not start nearly as early as the 6.30am tee time of the first two rounds.Lawrie will tee off at 9am and Richie Ramsay 9.10am in the third round.

So a great, gutsy effort by the Aberdonian while players like Luke Donald, Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy failed to show the same determination to retrieve the situation, even though they were all ahead of Lawrie at the end of the first round.
Veteran Spanish Ryder Cup player Miguel Jimenez - "The Mechanic" from Malaga - leads the field at three-under-par 139 with scores of 68-71.
He is one shot ahead of Sweden's Henrik Stenson (70-70), England's Lee Westwood (72-68), World No 1 Tiger Woods (69-71) and fellow American Dustin Johnson (68-72).
Martin Laird is in the group on 141 with scores of 70-71. First-round leader Zach Johnson is alongside the leading Scot after going back from an opening 66 to a 75 today.
Fellow Aberdonian Richie Ramsay made it through on the same mark as Paul Lawrie, shottong 76-74 for 150.
But world-class names such as Luke Donald (72 for 152), Justin Rose (77 for 152), Rory McIlroy (75 for 154) will be seen no more at Muirfield this weekend.
Grant Forrest (Craigielaw), winner of the Scottish amateur title at Royal Dornoch last year and a student at San Diego University, was also among the non-qualifiers. He plunged from a promising 73 to a disastrous 86.
After pulling out of the Scotland team for last week's European men's amateur team championship in Denmark so that he could spend more time practising for the Open, there will be no tears shed for his failure to last more than two rounds at Muirfield.

BORSHEIM NOTCHES LOWEST TWO-ROUND TOTAL ON CHALLENGE TOUR THIS YEAR

CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT
From EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Knut Borsheim followed up his stunning opening round 62 with a
six under par 65 to move three shots clear after the second day of
the Mugello Tuscany Open in Italy.
The Norwegian could not quite shoot the lights out like he did on
the opening day, when a Challenge Tour season low front nine of
28 - eight under par – helped him to a nine under par round but he
did carry that momentum into day two as he opened with birdies at
the first and second.
The 26 year old picked up another shot at the fifth to reach the
turn in three under before another pair of back to back birdies at
the 11th and 12th were followed by a bogey, but Borsheim finished
with a pair of birdies at the 17th and 18th to card another superb
round at UNA Poggio dei Medici Golf Club.
“I am really happy with the way I played today,” said Borsheim,
who moved to 15 under with a combined total of 127 – the lowest
first 36 hole score of the season on the Challenge Tour.
“I wasn’t feeling too good this morning because it was really warm
and I didn’t feel like I had much energy when I woke up but I
managed to rest up and conserve some energy before I teed off.
“I was really steady. I made some nice birdies and when I missed
the green I made some really nice up and downs for par so it was
very solid.
“It’s really nice to follow up such a good round with another one. I
just tried to go out there and do the same as what I did on the first
day and it is often hard to follow up a great round with another
good one.”
Borsheim’s rise to prominence in 2011 came largely thanks to a
second-placed finish at the lucrative Kazakhstan Open, a big
performance which seemed to come from nowhere considering he
had not even recorded a top 30 in seven appearances prior to that.
While the man from Bergen in Norway has recorded a third place
finish already this year, it has been a mixed season thus far, but he
believes he can once again pull a massive result out of the hat and
emulate his compatriot Espen Kofstad - who had such a stunning
season in 2012, finishing top of the Challenge Tour Rankings.
“That was funny in Kazakhstan in 2011 because if I didn’t do well
that week it would have been my last appearance before
Qualifying School three months later because I was playing on
invites,” he said.
“That result changed my career really and I feel like I’m
getting  back to that form now. Espen’s success last year was a
real relief  for me because I play with him a lot and it gives me
the feeling that I can win too on the Challenge Tour.”
Floris de Vries was the only player within touching distance of the
leader as he moved to within three shots of Borsheim on 12 under
par thanks to a seven under par second round 64, after opening
with a 66.
There were three players four shots further back on eight under
par, seven shots off the top, as Englishman Phillip Archer (68),
South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli (69) and Jamie McLeary of Scotland
(68) all shared third place going into the weekend.

OLD MAN MIGUEL LEADS OPEN AT HALFWAY

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Already the oldest winner in European Tour history, Spain's Miguel Angel Jiménez boosted his chances of becoming the oldest Major Champion as well in The 142nd Open Championship.
American Julius Boros has held that distinction since winning the US PGA Championship in 1968 aged 48, but 49 year old Jiménez claimed the halfway clubhouse lead at a fiery Muirfield, thanks to a second round of 71.

Jimenez, who broke his leg in a skiing accident last December shortly after winning the Hong Kong Open aged 48 and 318 days, carded two birdies and two bogeys to finish the second round three under par overall, one ahead of England's Lee Westwood, World Number One Tiger Woods and Sweden's Henrik Stenson.

"Of course I feel pressure. Anything that is important to you makes you feel pressure, but as long as I can handle it there is no problem," said Jiménez who returned to action in the Open de España in April and finished fourth in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club five weeks later.

"I have been playing golf for 25 years and sometimes you think maybe it's too many, but it's okay."

Westwood had reached five under when he raced to the turn in 31 and then birdied the 12th, but even dropping three shots in his last six holes could not dampen the 40 year old's mood after a 68.

"It's a Major and I love playing The Open Championship," said Westwood, who recently enlisted the help of Woods' coach Sean Foley on his long game and 1991 Open Champion Ian Baker-Finch on his putting as he seeks a first Major title.

"It's the biggest event of the year for me. Why not enjoy it out there? It's tough for everybody so smile your way through it.

"I thought one over would be right in contention so to be two under is a real bonus. The greens were a little softer this morning. I repaired a pitch mark on the second and third but that was about it as far as that was concerned. They started to firm up pretty quickly.

"I was pleased to be six under through 12. I was playing some great stuff and it was just getting harder as the holes progressed. The golf course got really difficult and the finish is tough as 16, 17 and 18 are playing hard. I'll kick back this afternoon on the couch and watch some struggles and the cricket."

Woods, whose last Major title came in the 2008 US Open, carded two birdies in his first five holes but then had to wait until the 18th for another after dropping shots at the eighth and 11th.

"I'm in a good spot," the 37 year old said.

"I've just got to continue plodding along, continue just being patient, putting the ball in the right spots.

"We're not going to get a lot of opportunities out there but when I have I've been able to capitalise and hopefully I can continue doing that."

From the start of his professional career, Woods played in 46 consecutive Major Championships and won 14 of them. Since the last of those victories five years ago there have been 20 more. Woods has played in 16 and won none.

"I've been right there, I give myself chances. I've had chances on the back nine of many of those Sundays," he added.

"Just one of those things where I haven't gotten it done.

"I'm not going to win every Major I play in, but certainly I can try and put myself there. If I give myself enough opportunities, I'll get my share, and I think I have so far in my career."

Jiménez looked a strong favourite to lead at the end of the day, especially when overnight leader Zach Johnson followed birdies on the 12th and 13th with a bogey on the 14th.
At four under par overall,  the former Masters Tournament champion shared the lead with a fellow Augusta National winner Angel Cabrera, but the pair still had a tough finishing stretch to face, including the 15th that had seen Brandt Snedeker four-putt from 15 feet and Nicolas Colsaerts run up a quintuple-bogey nine.
Johnson duly dropped back with a double bogey on the 15th after running through the green with his approach and three-putting from short range, while Phil Mickelson four-putted the par three 16th.
Cabrera had bogeyed the 14th and 15th to join Johnson on two under, leaving Jiménez out in front as the day drew to a close.
Justin Rose missed the cut after adding a 77 to his opening 75 to finish ten over, the US Open Champion managing just two birdies in two days.
And World Number Two Rory McIlroy was also making an early exit on 12 over following a 75.

EDITOR'S NOTE: But 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie kept his hopes alive by improving by 12 shots in scoring a second-round 69.
On 150, Paul says in his website blog that he has hot-footed it back up to home in Bieldside to the west of Aberdeen and has his fingers crossed as the cut projection gets closer and closer to the 150 mark.
Good luck.

JIM WATT BEATS LINDSAY BLAIR IN SCOTTISH SENIORS FINAL

Left to right: Jim Watt, Derek Sim and Lindsay Blair before the final at Alyth.

Edzell's Jim Watt has won the Scottish senior men's open amateur match-play championship for the first time.
Watt, the 12th qualifier, beat the No 2 seed, Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth) by one hole in the final at Alyth Golf Club.
In a keenly contested match Watt was never behind but three-putted the 16th to see his lead cut to one hole.
After the 17th was halved, Blair's attempt with a 15ft putt for a birdie rimmed out on the last green. The hole was halved in par, leaving Watt the champion.
In the morning semi-finals, the Angus man beat Bill Erskine 9kilsyth Lennos) by one hole while Blair beat Alan O'Neill (West Lothian) at the 20th.

TIGER, TIGER BURNING BRIGHT AT ONE UNDER PAR THRO 36 HOLES

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
By OLIVER BROWN
With all the patience required of an Open champion, Tiger Woods displayed formidable resilience at a fast-running, sun-drenched Muirfield today to finish with a second-round 71 that left him at one under and sustained his challenge for a fourth Claret Jug.
The miscues of the first day, when Woods twice sprayed drives far to the left off the first tee, were long forgotten as the world No 1 showed prodigious accuracy without having to use the driver.
Just one shot behind early pacesetters Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson as he returned to the clubhouse, with overnight leader Zach Johnson still to tee off, Tiger looked ominously poised.
This was a performance of great composure from Woods, who seldom strayed from the centre of the fairway as he prioritised accuracy on Muirfield's arid layout, burnt dry by the constant sunshine and flanked on all sides by deep fescue rough.
His arm-aloft gesture on the final green, as he sank a 12-foot putt for birdie, showed how significant the putt could yet prove in the narrative of this Open Championship.
Woods had begun his charge by draining a slippery 12-footer for birdie at the third, but made a misjudgment at the next when a short par putt at the par-three fourth slid by. He made up the shot immediately with a birdie at the long fifth, but began to wobble with bogeys at the eighth and 11th.
Only sheer force of will, allied to his dependable putting, took him through the next treacherous sequence of six holes, much the toughest at Muirfield, without dropping a stroke.
It was all the perfect set-up for that 3 at the last, a punishingly long par-four but one that Woods mastered impressively with a beautiful approach from 218 yards. The sweeping putter-to-the-sky gesture as the ball dived into the hole spoke volumes. Tiger is on the prowl.

SUMMERHAYS LEADS WITH 63 BEFORE BAD WEATHER HITS MISSISSIPPI

FROM THE SKY SPORTS WEBSITE
An early start proved to be key for Daniel Summerhays as he took a three-shot lead at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi.
Summerhays finished with a blemish-free nine-under-par 63 to head the leaderboard - although half of the field are yet to complete the opening round due to the weather.
Play was halted at around 2pm local time by thunderstorms - and although numerous attempts were made to restart, the course was deemed too soggy to resume.

By that time Summerhays was already safely back in the clubhouse having holed seven birdies and an eagle to move three shots clear of fellow Americans Will Claxton, Michael Bradley and Jonathan Randolph.

THREE SHARE LEAD ON WEB.COM TOUR

FROM THE WEB.COM TOUR WEBSITE
By Dave Senko, PGA TOUR staff
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – Ben Martin, Chris Smith and Tyrone Van Aswegen matched 6-under-par 65s on Thursday morning (local time)  and share the first-round lead at the Midwest Classic at Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate. Mathew Goggin, who was tied for the lead after 15 holes, is fourth, one stroke shy of the lead.

Martin is perhaps the hottest current player on the Web.com Tour. After missing the cut at the Air Capital Classic last month, he has finished among the top four in his previous three starts. The former Clemson standout has a win at the United Leasing Championship, a T4 at the Rex Hospital Open and a T3 last week at the Utah Championship.

“My game started out pretty solid at the beginning of the year and I’ve been building off that and getting a little bit better each week,” said Martin, currently in his second full season on the Web.com Tour. He finished 54th on the 2012 money list and is currently fourth overall in that category.

“I got off to a good start today which is key here. If you shoot even-par here you’re behind the eight-ball,” added Martin.

Martin’s round included five birdies and an eagle which came on No. 13 when he chipped in from 15 feet.

A Monday qualifier for the third straight week, Smith is working to get his game back in shape and regain some status on Tour. Smith played full-time on the PGA TOUR for nearly 10 years and won the 2002 Buick Classic. He also owns five career victories on the Web-com Tour.

“I’ve been doing these Monday qualifiers on this Tour and they are brutal. There are just so many good players out there and I’m hoping to play well enough to get into the reshuffle later this year and perhaps get into the final four or five events,” said Smith.
“It’s an exhausting pattern and it’s been a big change for me, but the last couple of months I’ve felt much better and more comfortable with my game. I’m taking some positive steps and I feel confident again.”

This is just the fourth start on the Web.com Tour for Smith this year and he had played in just two events last year. His PGA TOUR resume the last two years included just three starts in 2012.

“The hard thing is just getting into a routine again. When I played on Tour Monday was my day off but now with these qualifiers it’s sometimes playing courses I’ve not seen before,” Smith continued.

Smith was one of seven players to post a bogey-free round on Thursday.
