LUNA, WOLSTENHOLME SET PACE IN BAD RAGAZ SENIORS OPEN

EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR REPORT
FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Senior Tour Rookie Santiago Luna and three time winner on the tour,
Gary Wolstenholme, were tied at the top after the opening round of
the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open thanks to six under par rounds of
64.
Spaniard Luna is playing just his third tournament on the Senior Tour
after turning 50 last November and his round got off to a flying start
at Golf Club Bad Ragaz in Switzerland, opening with back to back
birdies.
Three pars followed before a rollercoaster four holes during which
birdies at the seventh and eighth were sandwiched in between bogeys
at the sixth and ninth as he reached the turn in two under.
The former European Tour winner had a much more impressive back
nine though as he gained a shot at the tenth before three birdies in
four  holes, at the 13th, 15th and 16th meant he stormed into the early
clubhouse lead with the best round of his short Senior Tour career.
“I played really well today and I only missed one green,” said Luna. “I
was very consistent, I put my ball on the fairways and on the greens
and you need to do that here because if you miss a fairway you will
have problems.
“I think step by step I am getting more comfortable on the Senior Tour
and it is a nice experience to be playing with the players of my
generation, although it is not easy out here because everybody plays
so well. I feel like my game is getting better though and hopefully I
can take that into the weekend.”
Wolstenholme followed Luna into the clubhouse soon after with
another stunning 64 which came thanks to seven birdies and a single
bogey, the Englishman also carding a four under par back nine en
route to a share of the lead, two shots clear.
“It wasn’t sparking stuff today from me but I read the greens really
well and putted nicely,” said the six-time Walker Cup player. “I didn’t
strike the ball very well so I'm going to go to the range and work that
out because when I win I am usually hitting the ball well.
“My best putt was probably at 17 – it was only 12 feet but it was a
really breaky putt. I got some really good six or seven foot clutch
putts which were really nice too.
“I love this place. People always talk about the usual places like
Mauritius but it is just stunning here, Switzerland is a great country
and the views are just staggering.”
Two shots back on four under par were Philip Golding and George
Ryall of England alongside Canadian Phil Jonas, while former Ryder
Cup Captains Mark James and Ian Woosnam and record Senior Tour
title winner Carl Mason were among the group a shot further back on
three under par.

DUNCAN STEWART STILL TOP SCOT IN CHALLENGE TOUR EVENT IN GERMANY

CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT FROM
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Victor Riu maintained a two-stroke advantage at the Bad Griesbach Challenge Tour by Hartl Resort, Germany after a second round 69 saw him finish on 12 under par.

The Frenchman leads from Norway’s Eirik Tage Johansen who shot one of the rounds of the day, a six under par 66, which had seen him lead at the end of the morning’s play, while Dutchman Daan Huizing is on the same mark at ten under par after a 68.

Riu started on the tenth with three birdies in his first four holes, and despite that fast start, which saw him regain his overnight lead, he was not able to push on like yesterday.

Pars followed as he made the turn, before his only bogey of the day at the par five third saw him drop back towards the chasing pack. The 28 year old bounced back in fine style though three holes later, making his final birdie of the round at the sixth to ensure he finished the day as he started – two shots clear.

“My game was solid like yesterday, although I didn’t hole the putts like I did in the first round,” admitted Riu. “I’m feeling good with my game though, hitting the ball solid, and I will just try to keep this going on the weekend.

“This is the first time I am leading a tournament on the Challenge Tour, and I’m excited to be in this position, and it will be great to play well this weekend. I will certainly try my best.”

Norway’s Johansen carded a second round 66 to post ten under par in Bad Griesbach, having got his round off to the perfect start on Friday morning with three birdies in a row from the tenth, before picking up a further shot at the 16th hole en route to a front nine of 32 strokes.

Johansen didn’t stop there as he turned for home, rattling off another trio of red figures from the first to leapfrog Riu momentarily at the top of affairs, before a bogey at the par three fourth saw him finish at ten under par.

On the same mark is Huizing, who carded a second round 68 in the last group of the day to grab a share of second alongside the Norwegian.

The Dutchman only turned professional last October, and came to Germany fresh off a tie for second at the Karnten Golf Open presented by Mazda last week in Austria.

Also up there are Italy’s Andrea Pavan, who continued a rich run of form this season with a second round 67 to finish the day in a tie for fourth, and he’s alongside France’s Jermome Lando Casanova and Sweden’s David Palm, three strokes back at nine under par.

Duncan Stewart (68 for 137) and Raymond Russell (69 for 142) were the only Scots to beat the cut.

McDOWELL FINDS HIS FORM AGAIN IN THE FRENCH OPEN

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
Graeme McDowell arrived at the French Open on a mission - “To get in four good rounds ahead of The Open.” After his second successive 69 the Ulsterman may have to raise his ambitions somewhat.

McDowell had missed five out of six cuts prior to this 108-year-old event and admitted he was concerned with Muirfield just two weeks away.
But he has shrugged of his indifferent form to match the control of his first round with three birdies and a bogey to move to four under at Le National today.
It left the world No 9 handily posied behind the Paraguayan leader Fabrizio Zanotti. If McDowell were to prevail then his last seven starts would have yielded three victories and four missed cuts, which must be unprecedented for a professional.
“That would probably be above most people’s heads,” he said. “But I get it. It’s not the worst way to spread your season. This is a great course and not unlike the links we’ll face in a few weeks - firm and fast.”
McDowell was simply relieved to be teeing it up on a Saturday for the first time since the start of May.
“It’s been a rough couple of months for me,” he said. “I’ve not been playing the kind of golf I’d like to and the key to this week was to come and get myself in the mix for the weekend and get some of the juices flowing again.
“I’m excited for the weekend and to make a cut really. It feels like a step in the right direction. I certainly know what to do when I put myself in these positions. I just have not had the opportunity to do it lately.
"I’m probably on one of my worst missed cut runs in a while. It’s nice to break that, first and foremost, and be on the leaderboard.”
On the same mark in Versailles are two Englishmen in Graeme Storm and Simon Dyson, as well as Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher. One ahead in a group on five under is the Dane Thomas Bjorn.
Further down the field, Luke Donald and Ian Poulter are on two over, after a 73 and 71 respectively, but will be glad to have made the cut.

French fun in the sun for Fabulous Fabrizio

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

On a glorious summer’s day in Versailles, Fabrizio Zanotti coasted to the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the Alstom Open de France, establishing a one stroke lead over the Danish duo of Thomas Björn and Soren Kjeldsen and South Africa’s Richard Sterne.

The Paraguayan dropped just one shot at the formidable Golf National to post a second consecutive round of three under par 68 to move to six under for the week, with Björn, Kjeldsen and Sterne tied on five under.

Graeme McDowell is lurking on four under, alongside Stephen Gallacher, Simon Dyson and the 2007 Alstom Open de France winner Graeme Storm.

Only nine strokes separate Zanotti and the rest of the weekend field at Le Golf National. With every player to survive the halfway cut, including Luke Donald (+2), Ian Poulter (+2) and Matt Kuchar (+3), in with a chance of catching Zanotti.
Eliminated at halfway were those with 36-hole aggregates of 146 and higher.

“I am very happy with the round,” said Zanotti. “It was pretty tough out there, and the course is playing very hard, so very happy.

“I will try to keep playing like this and just have fun. I am always positive and love to play in big tournaments with big crowds and great atmospheres, and that is what we have here.

“On a course like this, I think that you have to accept everything.  It's playing very tough and the greens are getting hard, so it's going to be very difficult, but hopefully I can keep patient and have fun.  There is no other way I think.”

MURPHY WINS SENIORS EVENT AT CARDROSS

Derek Murphy (Kinross) won the West of Scotland seniors' tournament by three shots with a two-over-par total of 144 at Cardross Golf Club today (Friday).
Murphy virtually won the 36-hole tournament with a brilliant first round of three-under-par 68 which saw him surge five shots clear of a field of 95.
A second-round 76 left the door if not open, then slightly ajar for the chasing pack led by Phil Dempsey (Tulliallan) and Colin Halcrow (Windyhill). But they gap was too big to make up and they tied for second place on 147, both with similar rounds of 73-74.

BANCHORY'S SAM LOCKE FINISHES TOP SCOT BEHIND FIRST FRENCH WINNER OF SCOTTISH UNDER-16 BOYS' TITLE

Matthieu Caron, one of 17 French players in the field, won the Scottish Under-16 boys' open amateur stroke-play championship by a single shot from one of his compatriots, Edgar Catherine and Italy's Guido Migliozzi at Portlethen Golf Club today (Friday).

Caron, pictured with the trophy by Cal Carson Golf Agency, the first French lad to win this tournament, was perhaps destined to be a leader - he comes from Charles de Gaulle's birthplace of Lille, a town on France's northern border with Belgium.
But the gap between the Bondues Golf Club member, who does not hold any French junior titles  and is 613th in the European Golf Rankings, and the field was steadily reduced over the final round.
Thirteen-year-old compatriot Antoine Kuoch, was the tournament leader at halfway by one stroke from Caron but he  dropped out of contention for the title with a third-round 78. In contract, Caron showed no signs of slackening off with a morning 70 for a six-under par tally of 210.
That saw him lead  by three strokes from Migliozzi (69-213) on a very hot afternoon when the temperature was up in the 20s.
Whether the heat got to Caron, who will have his 15th birthday on July 15, is debatable but his final round of three-over-par 75 for a total of three-under 285 was by far his worst of the three days.
After an eagle 3 at the second he bogeyed the sixth, eighth, ninth, 10th and 13th, pulling out of his nosedive just in time with a birdie at the 14th and four straight pars to hold the fast-finishing Catherine and Migliozzi at bay.
Catherine took too long to warm up with rounds of 74 and 75, which was only two shots inside the halfway cut. But he had the best last-day 36-hyole tally of 137 (68-69) which saw him make up six of the seven shots by which he trailed leader Matthieu at the start of the final day.
Catherine birdied the 13th, 15th and 18th in an inward 33.
On his long journey home from North-east Scotland, Catherine  will be reflecting on bogeys at the eighth and ninth, which, in the final analysis, meant the difference between victory and finishing joint runner-up
Banchory Golf Club junior Sam Locke, pictured on the first tee this afternoon by Cal Carson Golf Agency, finished the top Scot in joint fifth place with two last-day rounds of 71 for level par 288. His final round was steadiness personified with 15 pars, two birdies (long fourth and long 18th) and one bogey (short 12th).
Locke birdied the long fourth in every one of his rounds and birdied the long 18th in the second, third and fourth rounds.
Stonehaven-based Sam is the14-year-old stepson of Andrew Locke, who as a youngster played interntional golf and football for Scotland, but is better known now as one of the busiest coaches on the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre staff at Ardoe and a swing expert highly rated by Lawrie himself.
"Sam deserves all the credit for his high finish against very good opposition. I keep him right but he works hard on his game and his handicap has come down from 10 to two since the start of the year," said Andrew who stayed in the vicinity of the clubhouse rather than put added pressure on the youngster by following him round.
"We decided we would not change anything for the last round and I had not gone round with him previously. We are all very proud of him."
In all there were three Scots in the top 10, not a bad performance at all, given the strength of the international opposition. Calum Fyfe (Cardross), the first-round leader with a 67 (the lowest score of the tournament), finished tied seventh on 289 (the same mark has halfway front runner Kuoch who signed off with a 72) and Murray Naysmith (Marriott Dalmahoy) was 10th on 290, signing off with a 69, his best round of the four.
In joint 12th position on 292 were Cameron Black (Cardross) and Niall McMullen (Lundin).
The leading English boy was Nathan Longley from Worthing, Sussex, joint fifth with Locke on 288. There were no other boys from England in the leading 12.
