CALUM KEEPS THE HOME FIRES BURNING

Cawder's Calum Fyfe kept the home flag flying at Portlethen Golf Club today (Wed) in the first round of the 72hole Scottish Under-16 boys' open stroke play golf championship.
But Fyfe had to shoot a five-under-par 67 to hold at bay formidable opposition from outwith Scotland.
Nathan Longley and Matthieu Caron (France) start the second day on 68 and breathing down Fyfe's neck.
A second French challenger in the top five is Antonio Kuoch, who is Under 14 years of age. Kuoch is joint third on 69 alongside Robbie Kemsley (Balmore).

HUTCHEON THREE PUTTS TO LOSE PLAY-OFF TO CURRIE

Caldwell's Christopher Currie beat Greig Hutcheon (Banchory) in a sudden-death play-off to win the PGA of Scotland's Duddingston 36-hole Challenge at the Edinburgh venue today (Wed)/
They had tied on 11-under-par 133, Currie with scores of 68 and 65, Hutcheon 67.
Currie won the first extra hole and the top prize of £1,350 with one-putt par after being in a greenside bunker with his approach.
Hutcheon looked odds on to win after getting safely home in two and facing a birdie putt for victory. But the Banchory man's effort went around 2 and a half feet past the hole and he missed the one back the way to run up a costly three-putt bogey. His consolation cheque amount to £1,100.
The play-off participants finished four shots clear of the field.
Third on 137 was Mark Kerr (Marriott Dalmahoy) who earned £900 with scores of 69 and 68.
Neil Fenwick (Dunbar) finished fourth on 138 (70-68) to earn £7070 f0.
Craig Gordon (Edinburgh Golf Centre), joint overnight leader with Hutcheon, subsided to a second-round 70 for 143 and finished joint 10th.
