SIX SHARE LEAD IN FEDEX ST JUDE CLASSIC IN TENNESSEE

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
MEMPHIS, Tennessee -- Davis Love III is busy still trying to play his way back into shape after back surgery in February. Playing with Brandt Snedeker and Dustin Johnson, he did a bit better than just keep up.
The 49-year-old Love shot a 4-under 66 for his best round of the year Thursday for a share of the lead with five other players after the first round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic, the final event before the U.S. Open next week at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
"I still hit some bad shots," Love said.
"At THE PLAYERS and Memorial, I felt like I was playing better than I was scoring. I think it's rust. I'm excited to be back, and I'm anxious and I want to play better than I'm playing. I'm a little bit tired from the two 36-hole qualifiers as well. You got to be a little bit more patient and polished. That's going to take some rounds of golf to get back."
Stuart Appleby, Harris English, Nathan Green, Martin Flores and Glen Day also pushed their way into the lead on a day where at least three others had a piece of the top spot lead at some point.
Johnson, the defending champ, was 5 under through six holes, taking advantage of near-perfect conditions at the TPC Southwind with a temperature in the low 80s and only a slight breeze early. But Johnson finished with a 67 and was tied with 10 others including David Toms, a two-time winner here, and Shawn Stefani, who was tied for the lead before he hit into a fairway bunker and bogeyed No. 18.
Snedeker opened with a 70. Boo Weekley, who won at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, shot a 68 and was tied with seven others. Phil Mickelson had a 71.
Love took off in February for surgery to relieve numbness and weakness caused by spinal stenosis and bone spurs. He didn't play at all in March or April, and this is his fourth tournament back on TOUR. He tied for 29th at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance last week, and tied for third here a year ago in what wound up being his best finish of 2012.
He credited his good start to being grouped with Johnson and Snedeker, who also like to play fast. "I tried to keep up with Dustin and Brandt," Love said.
Love made the turn at 2 under and birdied Nos. 10 and 11 to move into a five-way tie at 4 under with six others a stroke back at that point. He bogeyed No. 12 and bogeyed the par-3 14th. But Love birdied two of his final three holes to finish with a piece of the lead.
Appleby had five birdies and a bogey for his best round this year. The Australian with nine victories hasn't won since The Greenbrier Classic in 2010, and his best this year was a tie for 35th at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina. He said he was surprised the scores weren't lower on a day where there wasn't any wind.
"I thought there were some more birdies out there," Appleby said. "I think just with the pace of the greens if you're above the hole it's tricky. I'm happy with the way I played today. Anybody who got under par today, the scoreboard, certainly fought to get there."
English, a 23-year-old from Georgia, got to 5 under on his back nine only to bogey his next hole at No. 5. Flores also got to 5 under when he birdied No. 13 to take the lead to himself only to double bogey the 14th after hitting into a bunker. He birdied No. 16 to get back into the lead group.
Green, who lost his status last year, was the clubhouse leader at midday. The Australian, who won the 2009 RBC Canadian Open, has been busy rebuilding his chipping and putting. This is his best round this year, but it had been awhile since Green had seen his name at the top of a leaderboard.
"I was starting to get nervous seeing my name on the board and made two good up and downs to finish off the round, which is nice," Green said after hitting into bunkers on Nos. 17 and 18 on his way in.
Mickelson struggled on Nos. 15-17 with two bogeys and a double bogey on the par-5 16th where he hit into a greenside bunker into the rough and into another bunker before finally holing out. He said he wasn't sharp with his short game on small, fast greens that don't hold shots well in his first competitive round in a month.
"This is great because it's a great test," Mickelson said. "The guy that strikes it well is going to have a big advantage, but when you do miss greens, you've got to be pretty sharp with your short game because the lies around the greens are some of the most difficult that we get."
But for someone who hadn't played in so long, Mickelson said he was happy with how he hit the ball.
"It's about as good as I've been striking it, and I feel like there's a good round in me," Mickelson said.
Notes: Paul Goydos, who shot a 73, may have re-injured his left wrist hitting out of some deep rough on 15. This was his first event in more than a year after extensive surgery on his wrist. He wrote on Twitter that he got some therapy after his round and planned to ice every hour but will not know how bad it is until he warms up Friday morning. ... Guan Tianlang, the 14-year-old from China who made the cut at the Masters, opened with a 73. ... Matt Bettencourt withdrew because of illness after shooting a 39 on the front nine.

SCOTS SHARE IN LOW-SCORING BONANZA ON CHALLENGE TOUR

FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
After an opening day of prodigiously low scoring, it was 39 year old Francis McGuirk and a man 19 years his junior in Adrian Otaegui who came out on top after shooting magnificent rounds of eight-under-par 64 to shared the lead at the D+D Real Czech Challenge Open.

In what was a day for the ages, Englishman McGuirk and Spaniard Otaegui sparkled as the assembled field put Golf and Spa Kunetická Hora - a course of some 7,300yd - to the sword in benign conditions, with 94 players shooting level par or better.

Of the Scots in the field, only Gavin Dear from Noahs Ark, Perth failed to score par or less. He had a 75 and is back in a share of 119th place.
Andrew McArthur, Raymond Russell and Jack Doherty led the Scots with five-under-par 67s for a share of 11th place.
Duncan Stewart had a 68 for a share of 24th place.
Ross Kellett scored a 69 for joint 34th spot.
Steven O'Hara and Jamie McLeary were both on the 70 mark for joint 45th postion.
Wallace Booth matched the par of 72 and is joint 79th.
Within one of the lead following the initial exchanges are South Korea’s Sihwan Kim and Spaniard Carlos Aguilar, both of whom shot excellent rounds of 65, while a pack of six players lie a further shot back.

After starting on the back nine, Otaegui found birdies at the long 11th and par four 14th while a hat-trick before the turn – including a 35 foot birdie putt at the short 17th – saw the 20 year old San Sebastian native reach five under par.

Another gain followed at the long second before his only dropped shot of the day came at the third, where the former amateur star failed to get up and down from the dense rough to the right of the green.

Unfazed, he bounced back with another trio of birdies – at the fifth, where he holed a birdie putt from all of 50 feet, long seventh and short eighth holes – to complete a stunning round and capture a share of the first round lead.

“I played well from tee to green and made quite a few long putts which is always pleasing,” said Otaegui, who was mentored growing up by triumphant 2012 Ryder Cup Captain José María Olazábal.

“But my game was good in general and I’m obviously very happy with making such a great start.”

He continued: “The only thing I want is to learn every week and keep improving every week and I just need to be patient.  It is still very early so I’m looking at the bigger picture, the next few years.

“I’ve played a lot in the winter in recent years with (Olazábal) and I learn so much from him; both in terms of his golf but also the way he carries himself and the ambiance around him. He’s special and has helped me a lot.”

McGuirk, meanwhile, was flawless in his eight under par 64 in what was an exemplary all-round performance in the afternoon session.
After starting with four pars from the tenth, the Sutton man holed a 25-foot birdie putt at the par four 14th to kick-start his round and rarely looked back as he reined in the young Spaniard.

“You could say it might’ve been better but when you hole a couple of 25-footers they are always a bonus,” said McGuirk, who also lipped out for birdie on a number of holes on Thursday.
“But I’m always going to take eight under. It’s definitely up there with my best rounds; I actually think it might be my lowest tournament round so I’m thrilled of course.”

Elsewhere, American Brooks Koepka, who. thanks to two Challenge Tour victories in the last six weeks, would secure instant promotion to The European Tour were he to triumph in the Czech Republic, started with a two under par 70 – only good enough for a share of 45th after what was truly a day of extraordinary scoring.

LONGMUIR, TORRANCE IN THE SENIORS MIX AT MOTTRAM HALL

FROM NATHANIEL SYLVESTER
PGA Press Officer

After threatening to establish a commanding lead on the opening day of the ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship, Des Smyth ultimately had to settle for a share of top spot with Gordon J Brand on six under par.

The pair both signed for rounds of six-under-par 67 at De Vere Mottram Hall, in Cheshire, although it could have been much better for Smyth who closed his round with three straight bogeys, having posted seven birdies and an eagle through his first 15 holes.

However, the five-time European Senior Tour winner was still pleased with a fine opening round.

“I played great, I really did,” explained the Irishman. “I got off to a great start, then nothing much happened until the eighth hole, where I chipped in from the back of the green, and that really got my round going. Standing on the 16th tee I thought I could shoot ten under or better, but that’s golf for you – it gives and it takes away.

“I feel good about my game. If ever you can be disappointed with a 67, then I guess today was that day. But if you’d offered me six under at the start of the day, I definitely would’ve taken it.”

Smyth is tied alongside Brand, the champion of this event in 2008 who fired a flawless round in the morning to lead for much of the day.

The Englishman kept the bogeys off his card and having not played on the European Senior Tour since the Fubon Open last November, was understandably delighted with his first foray of the 2013 campaign.

He said: “I putted really well today, and played steady. The greens were rolling at a nice pace and once I’d started rolling a few in, my confidence and belief grew and a birdie at the last was a nice way to finish a very pleasing day.

“I had no idea how today would go but I’ve been practising well over the winter, so I was hopeful that I’d play well, and so it proved.”

Paul Wesselingh, who won this event 12 months ago, is also handily placed after a strong start at a venue where he won his first professional event, the PGA North Region Championship, back in 1994. The highlight of his day came at the par five 13th, which he eagled en route to a five under par round of 68.

Since winning the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship 12 months ago in only his third start on the Senior Tour, Wesselingh has gone from strength to strength, and is clearly enjoying the responsibility that comes with such a life-changing victory.

He said: “It’s nice to come out here as I suppose people want to be closer to you and want more of me, which is lovely as I’ve never been in that situation before. It definitely has changed my life and obviously I’m no longer a club pro now, I play for a living, which is great.

“It was a great start with four birdies in the first five holes, which settled me down as I was actually a little bit nervous when I got announced as the defending champion on the first tee.”

One stroke further back is Scotland’s Bill Longmuir and former Ryder Cup captains Mark James and Sam Torrance, who was pleased with his round after a long lay-off from competitive action.

He said: “I haven’t played for seven months, which is probably the longest lay-off I’ve had in my 43 years as a professional golfer. So it was difficult to gauge how I’d play, and although there was a little bit of rust in the system I was pretty pleased with how I played overall.

“It’s my first time here, and the course is very nice. But it’s playing very firm, so you’ve got to be very precise with your tee shots to hold the fairways and then find the greens with your second shots. If you stray into the rough, it’s pretty difficult to make par from there.”

Other notable performances also came from Ireland’s Phillip Walton, who posted a three under par round of 70, while his 1995 Ryder Cup teammate Ian Woosnam signed for a 72.

Woosnam said: “It played pretty easy out there in the conditions, but unfortunately I didn’t play well enough to take advantage. I only got back from the States on Tuesday night, so I’m still feeling a bit jetlagged and it was a bit of a struggle out there at times today.

“I really struggled to find any rhythm, which was a shame because I played really well in the States last week, especially in the final round. But hopefully I’ll get a decent night’s sleep  and can work my way into the tournament tomorrow.”

TOM LEWIS RECAPTURES FORM TO LEAD WITH NINE-UNDER 63

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Englishman Tom Lewis returned to form in sublime style with a nine under par 63 in the first round of the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity.

The 22 year old, pictured, who won the 2011 Portugal Masters on his third professional start, raced into a two-shot lead at Diamond Country Club in Austria, eclipsing fine earlier efforts from Dutchman Joost Luiten (65), English trio Simon Dyson, Richard McEvoy and Graeme Storm and Frenchman Alexander Levy (all 66).

Lewis has largely struggled since making his breakthrough in Portugal, which came three months after he burst onto the radar by recording the lowest score by an amateur in the first round of The Open Championship.

However, nine birdies on a long, wet course were the perfect remedy for any lack of confidence.

“It’s a great start,” he said. “I had some good fortune around the 17th and 18th, which was my front nine, and that made the back nine more relaxed. I holed a lot of putts, which was really the only difference between today and the rest of the season.

“This year’s been tough, but I’ve been very close and shown a lot of good stuff. Today it all came together and if I can have three more rounds like that I’ll be alright.

“I always seem to throw in a double bogey in a round or a tournament and it pushes me out of contention. I’ve got to try to limit the mistakes and not get too down on myself, and I’ve been working hard on that with a lot of people. I’ve got a lot of support from friends and family, and good coaches, so with a bit of talent I’ve got no excuses.”

Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez is another shot back at five under, alongside 18 year old amateur Matthias Schwab, who was runner-up in last year’s Amateur Championship.
Leading Scot is Calum Macaulay who put his recent indifferent form behind him to return a four-under-par 68. Craig Lee is on 70 alongside Alastair Forsyth.
Peter Whiteford, who had been playing well of late, had a bad day at the office with an 81.

FENWICK'S LATE SWOOP TO WIN £1,073 PRIZE AT WEST LOTHIAN

NEIL FENWICK .. Two shot swing in his favour at the 17th.

Just when Christopher Russell, long-time leader in the clubhouse with a 66, must have been thinking of his winner's speech, in came "tail-end Charlies" Neil Fenwick and Gareth Wright to change the final leading placings in the West Lothian pro-am at West Lothian Golf club, Bo-ness today.
Englishman Russell, who plays out of RAW Golf Course Design, had no bogeys in his five-under-par round.
Fenwick won the £1,073 first prize with a six-under 66. It was the Dunbar tour pro's first win on the Tartan Tour this season but his seventh top-10 finish in 10 starts which have boosted his bank balance by £3,851.
Fenwick highlighted his card with an eagle 2 at the par-4 wth and had birdies at the second, short third, 10th, long 12th and 17th.
That birdie at the penultimate hole was decisive in the final analysis.
Glenmuir PGA champion last year, Welshman Wright looked set to tie with Fenwick at least after an eagle 2 at the par-4 seventh and then a purple patch of four birdies in a row from the 12th to the 15th.
But a three-putt bogey at the 17th saw him finish in a tie for second on 67 with the aforementioned Russell. They earned £751 each.
Four teams finished with net 14-under-par totals of 57 and the card countback gave victory to Chris Kelly (Cawder) and the "Captain's Team" of Maureen Shanks (handicap 11), Peter Ritchie (7) and Steven Fraser (11).

HARRY ELLIS - ONLY 17 - TARGETS PLACE IN WALKER CUP TEAM

FROM THE BBC SPORT.COM WEBSITE
Hampshire golfer Harry Ellis, still only 17, says he is targeting a place in the Great Britain and Ireland team for September's Walker Cup, following his breakthrough year in 2012.
Ellis knocked two years off six-time major winner Nick Faldo's record to become the youngest winner of the English Amateur Championship last year, when he was 16.
And Harry says he is looking to build on that victory and soon turn professional - but only when he feels is ready,
"I look back on 2012 and it was a massive year for me," Ellis told BBC South Today.
"In my progression as a golfing career, having that win in early August at the England amateur championships was a massive door opener for me.
"It's a lovely thing to have and hopefully it will stand for a long time.
"I've got a long way to go. I want to get better as quickly as possible but this game is about being patient."

ST ANDREWS LINKS AMATEUR STARS ASSEMBLE TO 72-hole HIGHLIGHT

NEWS RELEASE
Final preparations were underway at the Home of Golf today as the best amateur golfers from around the world prepare to bid for the prestigious St Andrews Links Trophy.

The strong international field were fine tuning their games ahead of tomorrow’s first round of the 72-hole tournament at the Jubilee course before three rounds over the Old Course.

This year’s competitors will be following in the footsteps of notable past participants, including Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Trevor Immelman, Geoff Ogilvy, Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy.

In order to clinch the prestigious prize they will have to overcome a stellar international field of 144 players from 23 different countries.

This year’s field has no shortage of quality with World Number 2 in the RandA World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), Brady Watt, from Royal Perth, Australia, one of six competitors from Down Under heading a strong international field alongside golfers from Italy, South Africa, France, Slovenia, Poland, Portugal, USA, UAE, Sweden and Iceland.

There is also a strong home contingent taking part at the Home of Golf with every Great Britain and Ireland player trying to impress the Walker Cup selectors and seal a place in the team for this year’s match against the USA at the National Golf Links of America, Southampton, New York.

England’s Garrick Porteous, fresh from his victory at last week’s Scottish Amateur Stroke-Play Championship will be looking to continue his good form and is joined in the field by Welsh strokeplay champion and 2011 Walker Cup winner Rhys Pugh.

There are also plenty of home favourites to support, with the Home of Golf well represented by St Andrews Links Junior Golf Association’s very own Ewan Scott and Ben Kinsley.

Ewan, who enjoyed a spectacular start to the season in South Africa and was runner-up in the Scottish Boys Matchplay Championship, has been joined by 17-year-old Ben who takes his place in the field as the tournament committee’s nomination.
St Andrews Links Trust Director of Golf John Grant said: “We are delighted to welcome such a great field for this year’s St Andrews Links Trophy.
“The tournament committee always strives to attract the best players to compete and this year is no exception with so many talented golfers making the journey from around the world.
“The courses are in fantastic condition and with some great weather forecast in the next few days we can look forward to a great weekend of golf at the Links.”
Since its inception in 1989 the RandA World Amateur Golf Rankings rates the St Andrews Links Trophy as one of the strongest amateur tournaments in the world, based on strength of field, and it is arguably one of the strongest outside the Amateur Championship in the British Isles.
The 2013 St Andrews Links Trophy takes place from tomorrow (Friday, June 7) to Sunday, June 9 on the Jubilee Course and the Old Course.
