ROYAL ABERDEEN v PORTLETHEN, BON ACCORD v BANCHORY IN MAITLAND SHILED SEMI-FINALS

Defending champions Murcar Links have lost their grip on the City of Aberdeen men's double foursomes tournament for the Maitland Shield, sponsored by the Cults Hotel.
On a night of Baltic conditions at the Kings Links, Portlethen beat Murcar Links by an overall six-hole margin. Brechin and Kiloh, the Portlethen lead-off pair, finished two up on McKinnon and Styles.
Then Innes and Horne increased Murcar Links' winning margin by finishing four holes up on Stewart and Bews.
In Thursday evening's semi-finals, Portlethen will play Royal Aberdeen, beaten in last year's final.
The Balgownie men won their quarter-final comfortably against Stonehaven by a nine-hole margin.
Bon Accord beat Caledonian in the local derby match by four holes.
Edmond and Mitchell finished two up in the lead-off tie against Reid and Doig. Then Greig and Dunn did likewise against Pirie and Oliver.
Bon Accord had to wait to know the identity of their opponents in the second semi-final.
The Banchory v Deeside quarter-final went into "extra time" after Jarvie and Rennie for Deeside had finished one up on Adam Lindsay and Davie Brand, but Craig Lindsay and Jack Harling levelled it by finished one up on Craig Lawrie and Rose who three-putted the final green after young Harling, a New Zealander, had slotted a a 25ft putt for a par 3 after they had been in the bunker off the tee.
Down the 19th they went and Adam Lindsay and Brand won the first hole with a par to a bogey before the second pairs halved, which meant that Banchory had won through.

CORRIGAN SAYS TOURS SHOULD HAVE BANNED GARCIA FROM THIS WEEK'S CHAMPIONSHIP

Sergio Garcia, escaped unpunished for racist remark about Tiger Woods.

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
By JAMES CORRIGAN
Sergio García should not be playing in the first round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Thursday.
García should be sitting in a room far away – perhaps even laid out on a couch – reflecting on a remark which he first intended to be “funny”, then wished to be viewed as “silly”, but which Tiger Woods rightly described as “hurtful, wrong and wholly inappropriate”.
The Spaniard should have been told to withdraw from the European Tour’s flagship event. Instead, he informed a packed press conference on Wednesday that he had not even been fined by this Tour or the US PGA Tour.
Incredible, isn’t it? Golfers are routinely hit with £5,000 sanctions for throwing clubs around. But throw a racist jibe across a room containing 300 guests, causing offence on a much wider level, and all the professional has to do is apologise and appear contrite.
And golf wonders about its reputation.
It is insulting to cast some of the officials involved as middle-class white men turning the other way. But it is their fault that perception is inevitable.
Let us consider what has happened to Woods since he supposedly broke down all those barriers at the 1997 Masters. He had not even finished making that history when Fuzzy Zoeller made the original “fried chicken” wisecrack.
Zoeller paid for his comments – which were only “made in jest” – by losing contracts and his form. The poor lamb.
Zoeller was not suspended by the US Tour, but for some reason was still, in some quarters, projected as the victim. The whisper was that Woods could have and should have helped the lovable veteran with a kindly statement. Golf seemed to have a problem appreciating the vile undertones in his casual racism.
Fast forward to 2011 and Steve Williams on stage at a caddie awards night at a World Golf Championship event, announcing he was glad that his boss Adam Scott won an event because “I wanted to stick it right up that black asshole”.
There was not any pity for Williams, a gruff Kiwi who hardly inspired affection, but again there was no fine or suspension from the Tours; just another worthless statement saying how “disappointed” they were, but recognising that Williams had apologised.
There is a trend developing here and if was happening in a sport such as, say, football there would be a very loud and justifiable outcry. Yet golf carries on regardless, trampling over sensitivities in the stampede to the ATM.
García explained he did not withdraw from this week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth because “this tournament deserves me”. He actually believes he is that important.
The game must now show genuine leadership. But after two of the most powerful men in golf – the European Tour chief executive and the US PGA Tour commissioner – briefly met with García on Wednesday lunchtime they displayed a stunning disregard about the seriousness of the situation.
“We consider the matter closed,” they said, ignoring the problem in the hope it might go away. But it will not, regardless of how rigorously they try to brush it under the corporate rug. Woods has the right to make his living in a workplace which does not tolerate racism.
But no, the official statement dismisses García’s outburst as “a stupid remark”. That just about sums it up. As Woods said, it was too hurtful and too wrong to be classified in the “stupid” or “silly” bracket.
Woods deserves better, golf deserves better. And this BMW PGA Championship does not deserve Sergio García.

McLEAN AHEAD OF LAW IN HAUGSCHLAG OPEN IN GERMANY

Paul Lawrie Golf Centre stablemates Philip McLean from Peterhead and Aberdeen's David Law shot 73 and 75 respectively in the first round of the EPD Tour's Haugschlag Open in Germany today (Wed).
McLean did not have so many bogeys as usual but a double bogey 7 at the long ninth cancelled out birdies at the first and short eighth.
Law played the back nine first and was going well - despite a double bogey 7 at the long 15th - after birdies at the 12th, 13th, 14th and short 16th to be one under par with nine to play.
But he did not have another birdie on his card and took 40 shots to complete his round.
Germans Stephan Wolters and Dennis Kupper lead on four-under 68.

LUKE DONALD BIDDING TO REPEAT MONTY TITLE-HAT-TRICK AT WENTOWRTH

WENTWORTH PREVIEW
FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Englishman Luke Donald admits it would be a big honour to follow in the footsteps of Colin Montgomerie as he bids for a hat-trick of titles in this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club.

Montgomerie is the only player to have won The European Tour’s flagship event three years in a row, sealing his treble in 2000.

Donald now has the opportunity to match that feat after defeating Lee Westwood in a play-off in 2011 and successfully defending his title 12 months ago, finishing four shots clear of Ryder Cup team-mates Justin Rose and Paul Lawrie.

“I have to treat this as an opportunity to win another tournament,” he said. “I’m trying not to think about three in a row so much, but it would be great to emulate what Monty did.

“Since the changes here, the course seems to have really suited my game and I feel very comfortable around this place.

“This tournament has always been very special for me. Having grown up very close to here, I've always had a lot of support of family and friends to enjoy my victories with me, and it would be great to have an opportunity to win three in a row.”

Montgomerie, who captained a European team featuring Donald to Ryder Cup glory in 2010, wished him well in his pursuit of a record-equalling hat-trick.

“I know how difficult it was, but obviously these things are there to be equalled or broken,” said Montgomerie.

“It's a great thing to try to achieve, in our flagship event, and to try to win anything three times in a row is something that he should be very proud of."

Donald’s compatriot Rose, the World Number Four, is again expected to be among the challengers over Wentworth Club’s famous West Course, and he is relishing the opportunity to play on home soil.

“This event really is on a short list of tournaments that I would love to win,” said Rose, who played alongside Arsenal footballers Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey and Fulham’s John Arne Riise in the Pro-Am on Wednesday.

“Just outside of the Majors, there are very few tournaments ahead of this one. You have the nostalgia of being here as a kid, watching all the great players play, and obviously it's always a nice, hometown feel for me coming back here with friends and family.”

World Number Two Rory McIlroy will also be among the favourites this week, with 11 of Europe’s heroes from the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ in the field.

“I think it's an event that all of the Europeans and people on The European Tour look forward to coming back to every year,” said McIlroy. “It's always a great atmosphere.  You play in front of crowds who really get behind the tournament and are very supportive.

He added: “It's been a slow start to the season for me, but I feel the last few weeks have been really, really good.  I'm really excited and positive about where my game is at.”

SOUTH AFRICAN TIM CLARK TAKING LEGAL ADVICE OVER BAN ON ANCHORING PUTTERS

FROM THE BBC SPORT.COM WEBSITE

South African Tim Clark says he is among "a fair number" of players taking legal advice over the ban on the anchoring of putters from 2016.
World golf's governing bodies, the R and A and the US Golf Association (USGA) said on Tuesday they had decided to impose the rule.
The ban will apply to any club rested against a part of the body, such as the broom-handle or the belly putter.
Clark said: "We do have legal counsel. We'll explore options. We're not going to just roll over and accept this."
The US PGA Tour has also said it is considering its options on the matter.

Rule 14-1b

In making a stroke, the player must not anchor the club, either "directly" or by use of an "anchor point."
Note 1: The club is anchored "directly" when the player intentionally holds the club or a gripping hand in contact with any part of his body, except that the player may hold the club or a gripping hand against a hand or forearm.
Note 2: An "anchor point" exists when the player intentionally holds a forearm in contact with any part of his body to establish a gripping hand as a stable point around which the other hand may swing the club.

The US Tour opposed the ban when it was first proposed last year and, following its confirmation on Tuesday, a statement said: "We will now begin our process to ascertain whether the various provisions of Rule 14-1b will be implemented in our competitions and, if so, examine the process for implementation.
"In this regard, over the next month we will engage in discussions with our Player Advisory Council and Policy Board members.
"We will announce our position regarding the application of Rule 14-1b to our competitions upon conclusion of our process."
A 90-day consultation process was allocated for comments and suggestions when the proposals were first unveiled in November last year.
The USGA dealt with about 2,200 individual responses, while the R and A received 450 replies from 17 countries.
Clark, 37, who earned a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour after winning the Players' Championship in 2010, dismissed the consultation period as "all smoke and mirrors".
At Tuesday's announcement of the ban, which takes effect from 1 January 2016, R and A chief executive Peter Dawson admitted to being concerned that players could file lawsuits.
"I very much hope not," he said. "I don't think lawsuits will be on particularly strong ground.
"We are not so sure of ourselves that you can always be sure you're going to be right, but we have certainly done our homework on this one, far more than anything else in my time at the R and A."

TIGER WOODS SAYS GARCIA'S FRIED CHICKEN JIB WAS "HURTFUL"

  FROM THE BBC SPORT.COM WEBSITE
Tiger Woods has called Sergio Garcia's "fried chicken" remark "wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate" but believes it is time to "move on".
Garcia has since apologised for making what could be interpreted as a racist comment about world number one Woods.
Garcia, 33, had joked he would invite Woods for dinner to settle their recent argument and serve fried chicken.
Fried chicken is stereotypically associated with black people in the American deep south.
Woods, 37, said on Twitter: "The comment that was made wasn't silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate.
"The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it's long past time to move on and talk about golf.
"I'm confident that there is real regret that the remark was made."
Woods and Garcia have been involved in a public spat since The Players Championship earlier this month, when Garcia accused Woods of gamesmanship.
Garcia said: "I apologise for any offence. In no way was the comment meant in a racist manner."

Tiger's decline and comeback

  • 2005: 6 tournaments won
  • 2006: 9
  • 2007: 8
  • 2008: 4
  • 2009: 6
  • 2010: 0
  • 2011: 2
  • 2012: 3
  • 2013: 4 (to date)
Woods angered Garcia during the third round of the tournament at Sawgrass by preparing for his own shot as the Spaniard was about to play an approach shot.
Garcia was then asked at the European Tour's annual awards ceremony on Tuesday night if he would have the world number one around for dinner during the upcoming US Open.
"We will have him round every night," Garcia said. "We will serve fried chicken."
Garcia's remark was similar to one made by Fuzzy Zoeller to Woods in 1997.
After Woods won the Masters which entitled him to choose the champions' dinner menu for the following year, Zoeller said: "You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year.
"Got it? Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."
Zoeller later apologised and said he had been misconstrued.
Garcia issued a statement through the European Tour, saying: "I apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players' Awards dinner.
"I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner."
Earlier on Tuesday, Garcia rejected the opportunity to end his dispute with Woods ahead of the BMW PGA Championship, which starts at Wentworth on Thursday.
He said: "I don't have Tiger's number and he wouldn't pick up the phone anyway. But that's okay, I don't need him as a friend.
"He doesn't need me in his life, I don't need him in mine so let's move on and keep on doing what we're doing. There's never been a true connection like I would have with Luke [Donald] or Lee [Westwood], Adam Scott or some of the other guys I get along with well.
"It doesn't mean I cannot play with him, it's just another player. It's just when I'm playing with someone I enjoy there's a bit more talking during the round. When you play with someone you don't fancy as much it's a little bit quieter."

cid:image001.png@01CE5160.3A42F520

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Links with History Golf Pass is celebrating the 2013 season getting underway in earnest with a special offer for golfers booking to play at the four historic golf clubs in the Kingdom of Fife.

Golfers who book at least two rounds of golf at different courses at Scotscraig, Lundin, Ladybank and Crail through the Links with History Golf Pass during May and June will receive a courtesy coffee and bacon roll before their rounds at each venue.

A new website for the Links with History Golf Pass has also been launched to make it easier for golfers to make bookings. The easy-to-navigate digital portal at www.linkswithhistory.com features stunning imagery from the historic links and inland courses and gives information about the courses, the clubhouse facilities and how to book.

The Links with History Golf Pass is one of the best value for money golf products available in Scotland this summer with tee times at the five championship courses available from just £50 per person, per round.

Barrie Liddle, the Secretary at Scotscraig Golf Club, said, “The Links with History Golf Pass brings together four of the country’s most historic golf clubs and offers fantastic golf at affordable prices. The pass is a one-stop-shop for golfers, which takes the hassle out of booking a golf weekend or short break. We go out of our way to welcome visitors to our clubs and offering them a coffee and a bacon roll before their tee off is our way of giving them something a little extra to set them up for their round.”

Alistair MacDonald, the Secretary at Lundin Golf Club, added, “We are very much looking forward to a busy summer season and the new website will make it even easier for golfers to book the golf pass. It is designed to be visually appealing and easy to navigate and we have worked hard to make sure it includes all the key information required for booking golf with Links with History.”

The Links with History golf clubs are all located close to the Home of Golf in St Andrews and enjoy illustrious histories with three of them having been qualifying venues for the Open Championship. Crail Golfing Society is the seventh oldest golf club in the world, dating back to 1786, and Scotscraig Golf Club is the 13th oldest club in the world.

The courses offer a mix of challenging links golf at the Balcomie and Craighead courses at Crail and Lundin, a testing combination of links and heathland golf at Scotscraig and a beautiful but demanding tree-lined heathland layout at Ladybank.

The Links with History Golf Pass enables golfers to book two, three or four rounds of golf. The booking can be made either by phone, email or an online booking form on the Links with History website. Payment is made by cheque or by credit card and no money is requested until the booking has been confirmed.

MAITLAND SHIELD REPORT FROM DEREK JOHNSTONE

The closest match of the evening was expected to be between Newmachar and Banchory but it wasn’t to be, thanks to the excellent form of Banchory's second pairing, Jack Harling and Craig Lindsay.

They went round the Kings Links in a score of two under par  to score a six-hole win over the experienced duo of John Duff and Euan Kennedy.
With their top pairing of Adam Lindsay and Lindsay Smart losing by one hole, the 17th, Banchory will now face Deeside in the second round of matches on Wednesday night.
Deeside had a very comfortable win over Peterculter with both Deeside pairings seven up at the turn as their opponents struggled with the strong windy conditions.

The battle of the Links clubs saw the Caledonian take the bragging rights.  There was nothing in the first match until the Caley pairing of Barry Reid and Alan Doig won the 14th when their Northern opponents, George Paterson and Brian Rae, three-putted.
Further wins at 16 and 17 secured a comfortable three-hole advantage.
A similar three-hole win to the Caley second pairing set up a mouth-watering second round tie with their others Links neighbours, Bon Accord.
