DUNECHT HOUSE REPORT
FROM IAIN POWELL
The 2013 season kicked off today at Dunecht House. The full field, beautiful weather and warm welcome made for a fantastic start to the Paul Lawrie Foundation Under-15s Tour.

The Dunecht members always make us welcome and they came out in strength to help the competitors over the first nine holes.

We had a few new faces, which is always great to see, and it was a first time player, Andrew Yule from McDonald Ellon, who ran out winner with a fantastic 41 points.

Local boy Greg Anderson and Murray Spence from Peterculter finished a point further back.

Deeside member Chloe Henderson, also playing in her first Stableford, was the highest placed girl with 38 points.

Dunecht kindly donated nearest-the-pin and longest-drive prizes. Nearest the pin was won by champion Andrew Yule.
Calvin Duffton from Torphins won the longest drive with a bit of help from the road!

Fife won the GolfKings Scottish men's area team golf championship by beating Lothians 3 1/2-1 1/2 in the weather-delayed final at Crail Golf Society's Craighead links tonight (Sunday).
It was host Fife's second win in the championship in two years. Their 2011 victory was scored at Prestwick where they beat North-east in the final.
Foursomes pair Ally Hain and Jordan McColl put the first point in the final on the board by beating Ally Dick and Graham Robertson 4 and 3.
But Neil Henderson levelled it at 1-1 by beating Fife's Ewan Scott (St Andrews) by 4 and 3, having b been two up after 12.
Lundin's James White then put Fife into a 2-1 lead with a 2 and 1 win over Anthony Blaney (Liberton) who came back from three down after 12 to be only one down on the 17th tee.
Scott Stewart-Cation gained the clinching third point for Fife by beating Benn McLeod 3 and 2, having been four up at the turn and five up after 12. McLeod rallied to win the 13th and 15th but lost the 16th
Aberdour's Scott Crichton, with the help of a hole in one at the 13th, had a square match against Callum Hill (Tantallon).
Fife and Lothians, area champions a record 13 times since the tournament was inaugurated in 1977, earned the top seeding in Saturday's stroke-play qualifying which was also hit by bad weather. Torrential rain forced the SGU organisers to restrict the stroke-play programme to just one round.
Then morning fog delayed the start of Sunday's final until 12.30.
Fife beat Glasgow 4-2 while Lothians overpowered Stirlingshire 4-3 in the semi-finals.

OOSTHUIZEN PULLS OUT OF BYRON NELSON FINAL ROUND

IRVING, Texas (AP) - Louis Oosthuizen withdrew from the Byron Nelson Championship before the final round Sunday because of a neck issue.
The 2010 Open champion was at three-under 207 and tied for 32nd place after shooting even-par 70 in the third round.
Oosthuizen entered the "Nelson" with the No. 7 world ranking, the highest-ranked player in the field. He had missed the cut in his only other "Nelson" appearance.
Michael Bradley also withdrew Sunday morning with a back problem. Bradley was 2 under.
Oosthuizen is also set to play in next week's Colonial. Bradley is not on the field list for that invitational tournament.
Since 72 players made the secondary cut after three rounds, Oosthuizen and Bradley will get paid equal to a 71st-first finish.

McDOWELL BEATS JAIDEE IN VOLVO WORLD MATCH-PLAY FINAL

FROM THE BBC SPORT.COM WEBSITE
Graeme McDowell made amends for last year's defeat in the final by beating Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee to win the World Match Play Championship this afternoon.
The Northern Irishman came from two down after four holes to win 2 and 1 at the Thracian Cliffs course in the Bulgarian coastal resort of Kavarna.
McDowell, 33, had earlier beaten South Africa's Branden Grace 3amd 2 in their semi-final.
Jaidee saw off another South African, Thomas Aiken, by the same score.
It looked as though the Thai player was on his way to victory in the final after he birdied the second and fourth holes, with McDowell producing several vital par saves on the front nine.
However, the 2010 US Open champion worked his way back into contention and a third birdie at the par-five 14th put him in front.
When Jaidee missed a birdie opportunity at the 15th, McDowell made him pay to go two-up, and he wrapped up the title by holing out to halve the par-three 17th.

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Graeme McDowell overcame Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee 2 and 1 in the final of the Volvo World Match Play Championship to become the first Irishman/Ulsterman to put his name on the trophy alongside some the golf’s most legendary names.
McDowell, who defeated Branden Grace in his morning semi-final 3 and 2 to book his place in the final at the stunning Thracian Cliffs Beach and Golf Resort in Bulgaria, was delighted to win for the second time in the space of just four weeks following his victory on the US PGA Tour last month.
Those two successes have propelled McDowell to seventh on the Official World Golf Ranking, while his €800,000 first prize took him to the very top of The European Tour’s Race to Dubai.
Reading the names of the past champions of the 50 year old tournament that was first staged in 1964, McDowell said: “Els, Montgomerie, Westwood, Ballesteros, Norman, Lyle, Faldo, Player, Palmer – it's just crazy stuff really. These guys are legends of The European Tour and legends of golf so to have your name on a trophy this cool is pretty special.
“I'll drink a couple cold ones tonight and enjoy this.  This is a special moment in my career, no doubt about it.  Wins are super special.  You know, two in four weeks, that's great.  I'm feeling pretty good right now.”
After some seriously explosive golf in both semi-finals – both McDowell and Jaidee played superbly in their respective 3 and 2 wins over Grace and South African Thomas Aiken – the final was an understandably tight match, with Jaidee taking an early lead to go two up through four holes.
A birdie on the seventh saw McDowell half the Thai’s lead before the Northern Irishman made a pair of brilliant back-to-back par saves on the ninth and tenth to stay one down.
With the pressure mounting on the back nine, The 33 year old brought all of his US Open and Ryder Cup winning experience to the fore, birdieing the 12th to level the match before Jaidee dropped a shot on the 14th to hand McDowell the lead for the first time in the match.
“The key putts really this afternoon were with the par saves on 9 and 10; they were massive,” said McDowell, who added a second Volvo title to his CV, having made his breakthrough professional victory at the 2002 Volvo Scandinavian Masters.
“I sensed from Thongchai after that that he was starting to fatigue a little bit.  I really sensed a bit of an opening.  I just had to hit the shots and I did that well coming down the stretch.  The mistake he made on 14 and then the birdie I made on 15 was really the telling stuff and I managed t close it out from there.”

Volvo World Match Play Championship
Day 4 results:
Semi-finals
Thongchai Jaidee bt Thomas Aiken 3 and 2
Graeme McDowell bt Branden Grace 3 and 2
Final
McDowell bt Thongchai Jaidee 2 and 1.

AMERICAN PETER UIHLEIN WINS MADEIRA ISLANDS OPEN

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Peter Uihlein claimed his maiden professional title in superb style at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI as the American’s nerveless four-under-par round of 68 earned him a two-shot victory at Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra. Picture by courtesy of Getty Images(c).
It was another thrilling day at the stunning mountain-top venue and the crowds were treated to a dramatic hole-in-one from Mark Tullo in the final group, but it was Uihlein who showed the most steel when it mattered most as he flourished on the back nine to march to the title and first prize of 100,000 Euros.
Having started the day one shot off overnight leader Tullo, Uihlein got off to a bad start as he bogeyed the first but he atoned for that blemish with back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth.
The 2010 US Amateur Champion and at one time ranked No 1 in the WAGR, whose father Walter is CEO of major golf apparel and equipment manufacturer Acushnet, Uihlein could only watch on though, as Tullo found the cup with an eight iron tee shot from 201 yards at the par three fourth.
After picking up another shot at the seventh, Uihlein was knocked back again with two consecutive bogeys just before the turn, but the Floridian came out fighting on the way back with four birdies, including three in a row from the 11th, which left him two shots clear on 15 under par.
The tournament may well have been decided by a play-off as Morten Ørum Madsen was 15 under on the 18th tee, after a stunning run which yielded eight birdies, but the 25 year old suffered a double bogey at the 18th to give Uihlein his first win, in his 16th European Tour appearance.
“I’m just thrilled,” said the 23 year old. “To do it playing well on the back nine, coming down the stretch, is sweet. I know Morten played a heck of a round and Mark played really well so it was nice to come out on top.
“I just knuckled down I guess. It was all putting that did it today, I was just trying to free up and they started to roll in so it was nice.
“I hit some good putts coming down the stretch. When I was at the 17th I saw Morten was on 15 under and I thought it might have been a little more difficult but when I got to the 18th green I obviously saw he had dropped back. I’m just delighted to have won.”
Uihlein admitted that his decision to begin his professional career on the Challenge Tour and European Tour, on the advice of his father, was one of the best he ever made, believing he has developed both as a player and a as a man in Europe.
“A year ago I wasn’t even thinking about playing, I was just really struggling,” he said. “It’s a funny game. But I've learned a lot over the last year.
“When you’re struggling, it’s one of those things, you hate it when it happens but it’s almost the best thing that could happen to you. It definitely was for me and I'm pretty happy with how things turned out.
“You grow up quick out here and that was the main reason I came over. It’s been a good process so far and hopefully I can keep going.”
Tullo, meanwhile, was disappointed, not have emerged victorious on the day he carded a 13th career ace, but the 35 year old frin Chile is happy with his game after a second top five finish on The European Tour this season.
“It was a very positive week,” said the Santiago native. “I could have won this tournament. I had three bogeys from 100 yards today which hurt a lot, but hats off to Peter. He played really on the back nine and that’s what you need to do to win tournaments.
“I didn’t do that but it was very close and that’s a positive. Maybe there’s something further along the road for me in a big tournament.”
Despite the disappointment of a six on the final hole, Madsen carded an impressive five under par 67 to finish tied second alongside Tullo on 13 under par.
Welshman Rhys Davies, meanwhile, earned his best finish of the season far, and a hugely important result for the former European Tour winner with regard to the Challenge Tour Rankings, as a five under par final round 67 left in him tied fifth place.
Craig Lee finished fourth on 276 - only three shots behind the winner. He subsided to a closing 71 but broke par in each of the four rounds and 30,000 Euros of a pay packet is a nice weekend's work for the man from Stirling.

McDOWELL v JAIDEE IN WORLD MATCH-PLAY FINAL IN BULGARIA

FROM THE BBC SPORT.COM WEBSITE
Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell will face Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee in the World Match Play Championship final.
Last year's beaten finalist McDowell, 33, proved too good for South Africa's Branden Grace in their semi-final and completed a fine 3and 2 victory.
Jaidee, never behind in his last-four tie against another South African, Thomas Aiken, won by the same score.
The final at the Thracian Cliffs course in the Bulgarian coastal resort of Kavarna takes place later today.

LATER NEWS: Jaidee has taken an early lead over McDowell in the final.

McDowell started strongly in the semi-final with two birdies in his opening three holes but Grace fought back and was only one down after he birdied the 11th.
The 2010 US Open winner was in no mood to lie down, however, and birdied four of the next five to book his place in the final.
Jaidee, who had beaten Aiken and England's Ian Poulter in the group stages, was four up after seven.
Aiken carded three birdies in the next four holes but they were only good enough to claw back one hole.
A bogey on the 12th from Jaidee threatened to open the door to his opponent, but a birdie on the next restored an ultimately decisvie three-hole cushion.

ANOTHER BOGEY FINISH BUT BRADLEY STILL LEADS BY ONE STROKE

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
By PGATOUR.COM wire report
s
IRVING, Texas -- Keegan Bradley still hasn't got things right on the 18th hole at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, even when finally going left.
The bogeys on the closing hole at TPC Four Seasons haven't cost him the lead yet. He finished with a two-under-par 68 Saturday and holds a one-stroke advantage
Bradley overcame consecutive bogeys early and bogeyed No. 18 for the third round in a row

"(Sunday) is the day. Right down the middle," Bradley said about that last hole. "`I'm due!"
Bradley's 13-under 197 total gave him a one-stroke lead over Sang-Moon Bae, who had his third consecutive 66. Tom Gillis was two strokes back after a 67.
After going way right off the tee at No. 18 the first two rounds, Bradley smashed his drive Saturday down the left side toward the water. The ball stayed dry, but settled behind a large rock and forced him to punch back into the fairway. His approach settled on the front edge of the green and he almost saved par -- the ball rolled just over the lip of the cup.
"I thought I made the putt, which would have been exciting," he said. "But 5 on that hole from where I hit it off the tee is a pretty good score."
On Sunday, Bradley will be trying to win at TPC Four Seasons for the second time in three years. He could also become the Nelson's first wire-to-wire winner since Tom Watson led alone at the end of all four rounds in 1980.
"Should be easier than having to come from behind," he said. "I have felt comfortable out there, haven't felt nervous. I feel like I put the time in, I feel like this is where I should be when I play well is near the lead or in the lead."
Bradley got his first PGA TOUR victory as a rookie at the Nelson two years ago. He followed that by winning the PGA Championship later that season and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in 2012. The nephew of LPGA great Pat Bradley came from behind on the final day for all of those wins.
After following his opening course-record 60 with a 69 on Friday, Bradley started the third round with a three-stroke lead. He stayed alone at top of the leaderboard throughout.
Scott Piercy's 66 matched Bae and three others for the best round on a breezy Texas day. Piercy was fourth at 10 under, two strokes ahead of Gary Woodland (68), Harris English (68), John Huh (69) and 2011 Masters champ Charl Schwartzel (69).
When 83 players made the cut of even par, there were threesomes instead of traditional twosomes for the third round. That put Bradley in the same group with Bae and Gillis, who started the round tied for second place.
A secondary cut trimmed the field to 72 players for the final round, when Bradley plays with Bae in the final group. Gillis is paired with Piercy.
"Keegan is playing pretty good, but you got to play 'em all, see how it shakes out," said Gillis, who missed the cut in his previous five tournaments.
Gillis was the last player in the field with a bogey Saturday, when he three-putted from 20 feet at the 203-yard 17th. He got that stroke right back when he blasted out of a greenside bunker for an unexpected birdie at No. 18.
"Makes dinner taste better, that's for sure," Gillis said.
Bradley first got to 12 under with a 13-foot birdie at the 505-yard third hole and saved par at the next hole after driving into a fairway bunker.
His consecutive bogeys came when he two-putted for bogey after missing the green at the par-3 fifth and then drove into the rough at No. 6. But after a long wait to tee off at the 542-yard seventh hole, Bradley got to the green in two and two-putted from 14 feet for a birdie.
When Bradley's drive at No. 11 settled just a few inches above the top edge of a bunker, it looked like he might have some trouble. But he hit his approach shot onto the green, 34 feet from the cup, and sank the birdie putt to get to 13 under. He blasted within 12 feet from a greenside bunker at the par-5 16th hole for birdie.
Bae, the 26-year-old South Korean who has 11 international victories but none on the PGA TOUR, was quickly within a stroke of the lead after birdies on the first two holes. He made a 9-footer on the first and curled in a 32-foot birdie putt at the 223-yard second hole.
A 12-footer for birdie at the eighth hole got Bae to 10 under, again only a stroke back. But Bradley made a 14-foot birdie putt to close out the front nine and made the turn with a two-stroke lead over Bae and Gillis, who also made a birdie from 14 feet at the ninth hole to get to 10 under.
"Only play just my game," Bae said when asked how difficult it will be trying to overtake Bradley. "Nobody knows."
Notes: English twice had three birdies in a row, including approaches of 5 and 6 feet on holes 11-13 to get to 10 under right after missing a 3-foot par putt at No. 10. ... Huh, the 2012 PGA TOUR rookie of the year, had an eagle 2 at the 14th hole where he holed a shot from 162 yards. ... Two-time major champion Angel Cabrera missed the green at the par-3 fifth hole, but chipped in from 27 feet for his second consecutive birdie to make up for the double-bogey 6 at No. 3. He finished with 11 consecutive pars in a 70 that left him seven strokes off the lead.

GRIFFIN WINS TELECOM OPEN WITHOUT PLAYING A SHOT ON FOGGY SUNDAY

JEJU ISLAND, South Korea, May 19 - Australian Matthew Griffin won his second OneAsia title in less than a year on Sunday when the final round of the U.S. $900,000) SK Telecom Open was called off without a shot being played because of thick fog at Pinx Golf Club on Korea's Jeju Island.
Griffin can credit a spectacular 40 foot putt from off the back of the 18th green on Saturday for the win, as it meant he held a one-shot lead over South Korean veteran Kang Wook-soon at the end of three rounds.
The tournament ended in similar circumstances in 2011 when Kurt Barnes was declared the winner after fog prevented any play in the final round.
Built on a plateaux, Pinx Golf Club is prone to rolling fog from the extinct Mount Halla volcano, but the weather had been perfect for two rounds -- albeit damp and windy for the third.
"It's unfortunate to finish like this, but I'll take it," said Griffin, 29, who banked around U.S. $180,000) for the win and leapt to the top of the OneAsia Order of Merit with earnings of over $233,000 for the season.
"I thought my final putt yesterday was big as it gave me the lead, but I didn't think it would be the winning putt. It just goes to show you really must try and make everything."
