BRADLEY SETS BYRON NELSON CHAMPIONSHIP PACE WITH A 60

FROM THE GOLF DIGEST WEBSITE
By BRENDAN MOLDER
The ongoing (friendly) battle between Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner heated up this week, first with some Twitter banter and then with a head-to-head showdown during today's first round of the HP Byron Nelson Championship where, as the third man in the group, Matt Kuchar was forced to mediate.
As far as we can tell, the rivalry dates back to the 2011 US PGA Championship where Bradley defeated Dufner in a three-hole aggregate play-off at Atlanta Athletic Club.
It gained traction thanks to Dufner's consistent and creative teasing of Bradley's love of Boston sports, and Bradley's success in making the act of "Dufnering" a national phenomenon.
Keegan poked fun at Dufner during Monday night's Bruins game with a tweet, followed by Dufner's dry reply.
Bradley's record on the US PGA Tour certainly trumps that of Dufner, a fact that was reinforced by Bradley's first-round 10-under 60 to Dufner's even-par 70.
With that 10-shot whooping, Bradley got Dufner back for this Thursday morning prank that Bradley shared via his Instagram account.
Emptying Keegan's bag? Really, Duf Daddy? You can do better than that.
What makes Bradley's 60 in Dufner's company all the more sweet (at least for Bradley fans) is that he outdrove Duf by an average of 14.9 yards
As most golfers know, the best way to settle a friendly dispute is with a long drive contest.
Dufner hit it past Bradley only once (on the first hole, their 10th), and proceeded to hole out from 129 yards for eagle, so there's a little consolation for the expressionless one.
But Bradley hit it past Dufner by 27 yards on the seventh hole (320 to 293) and 34 yards on the 12th (307 to 273). That hurts. So does the 10-shot beat down.
Sorry Dufner fans, chalk another one up for Keegan.

EARLY LEADERBOARD

TRUMP TO SUE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT OVER WIND FARM PROJECT

Concerned by its recent decision to approve an 11-turbine wind farm near one of his courses, real estate mogul Donald Trump is taking the Scottish government to court.
Plans for the wind farm, which will take nearly $350 million to build near Aberdeen on the North-east part of the country, were recently approved by Scottish officials.
According to Trump, the construction as proposed will interfere with seaside views for golfers at his sprawling Trump International Golf Links resort in nearby Balmedie.
"The legal process started yesterday and I plan on proceeding for as long as required, irrespective of cost," Trump, pictured left, said Thursday as part of a released statement.
"We will not allow the Scottish Government or any other party to undermine what we have created at Trump International Golf Links and look forward to progressing the development further once this battle is behind us."
According to a government spokesman, the proposed wind farm could generate up to £7 billion ($10.7 billion) for the Scottish economy while supporting up to 28,000 jobs directly, and an additional 20,000 indirectly, by 2020.
"It's kind of sad to think that Trump has nothing better to do than use his billions to try and undermine Scotland's ambition of becoming a cleaner, greener, job-creating nation," explained WWF Scotland director Lang Banks.
"He may be happy wasting his own money. But, defending his legal action is likely to cost the Scottish taxpayer too."
According to an Associated Press Agency report, Trump plans to argue that his company was not given a fair hearing and that the government appeared to have a financial stake in the wind farm project, creating a bias against him.

CHANCE TO STAY AT LA MANGA AND PLAY IN SEVE CHARITY STABLEFORD

NEWS RELEASE FROM LA MANGA CLUB
Severiano Ballesteros had a long-standing association with the five-star La Manga Club and the Spanish resort is set to stage a new annual charity tournament next month in honour of the golfing legend.

Taking place on Sunday, June 16, the Severiano Ballesteros Foundation Challenge is an 18-hole individual Stableford competition that will be played over La Manga Club’s famed South Course in aid of the charity named after the star, who lost his fight against cancer two years ago at the age of 54.

Raising money for research into brain cancer, the event costs €50 to enter, while golfers can enjoy a relaxing two-night stay at the award-winning venue including entry fee from €140 per person – based on two people sharing a room.

Ballesteros made his European Tour debut as a 17-year-old at La Manga Club in the 1974 Spanish Open – one of five successive years the resort held the prestigious tournament.

Gary Silcock, La Manga Club’s director of golf, said: “Seve Ballesteros played a major role in helping La Manga Club establish its name across Europe and it’s important the resort remembers somebody who was a legend not just in Spain but across the world.

“This new event offers golfers the chance to not only honour one of golf’s truly great players at a venue that he loved, but also raise money into valuable research against cancer and we are sure that everyone – whether they are members, locals or visitors – will get fully behind what promises to be a great day.”

With facilities including three 18-hole championship courses and a nine-hole academy course, and having hosted the Spanish Open five times, La Manga Club is regarded as one of Europe’s foremost sports destinations.

Under the guidance of Silcock, the resort, in Murcia, south-east Spain, has enjoyed an impressive start to 2013 which has included seeing its golf bookings from the UK rise by more than a third on the corresponding period last year.

In addition to staging the Spanish International Amateur Championship and Ladies Golf Cup, La Manga Club also hosted the ECCO Tour’s Nordic League Winter Series for a fourth time this spring, while next month will see some of football’s top names, both past and present, including Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish head to Spain to compete in the 17th edition of the popular Addison Lee Footballers’ Classic.

La Manga Club boasts unrivalled facilities as a sport and leisure venue including three championship golf courses, a 28-court tennis academy and a 2,000m² spa and fitness centre. It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses, more than 20 bars and restaurants and great fun for families.

LLOYD SALTMAN EQUALS HIS BEST EVER PRO ROUND WITH A 64 IN MADEIRA OPEN

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE

Lloyd Saltman equalled the best round of his professional career on the opening day of the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI as a scorching eight-under-par 64 moved him two shots clear at the top.
The Scot, who played alongside Rory McIlroy amongst others at the 2007 Walker Cup, was the first man off on the first tee and the early bird certainly caught the worm at the stunning Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra.
Despite swirling winds at the Madeira venue, which sits 700 metres above sea level, the 27-year-old from the Archerfield Links stable made the perfect start with a birdie at the first before three more in a row, from the third hole, and another at the ninth took him to the turn in five under.
The Edinburgh man, who was a picture of calmness throughout his opening round at the Madeira venue, gained another shot at the 11th before mistakenly hitting the wrong wedge into the green at the 12th and subsequently falling to his first bogey of the day.
He bounced straight back in superb fashion, however, as a birdie at the 13th cancelled out his only blemish of the day, before two more birdies on the way home earned him an early lead which he maintained for the remainder of the day.
“I'm very pleased with my round,” said Saltman, who carded a 64 in the second round of the 2012 Nordea Masters. “It wasn’t easy out there today, with the wind swirling and getting very strong at certain point.
“I just played really well tee to green and made the putts I needed to make and my short game was really good as well so I can’t really pick any faults from that round.
“I have put myself in a great position and I'm here to win. I've been working very hard trying to get my game as good as I can and it’s nice to see the work paying off.
“It was a momentum killer at the 11th. It’s a short hole and I was only going in with a wedge but for the first time in my life I actually took the wrong club out. I hit the shot and it was only when I gave the club back to my caddie I realised I hit a 58 degree instead of a 54.
“I have never done that but I was so into the number and the shot I didn’t even look at the club and it went into the bunker. That was my only mistake so it was pretty close to a flawless round.”
Richard Bland of England was just two strokes back after he fired seven birdies for a six under par round of 66, and the Englishman accounted his round to a number of crucial par saves.
“It wasn’t easy out there, it was pretty tricky," he said. "I putted great though, made some good birdie putts and made three or four nice par saves and you have to do that when it’s tricky so I'm very happy.
“I think the most important putt was the par save at 18 (his ninth). I thought I had hit a good shot into the green but the wind left it alone and it went over the green. I chipped to about 12 feet and holed it for par."
Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren, Scot Craig Lee and Mark Tullo of Chile were a shot further back in tied third, after five under par rounds of 67.

McDOWELL CHALKS UP BIGGEST WIN IN VOLVO WORLD MATCH-PLAY OPENER

NEWS RELEASE
Graeme McDowell conjured a comprehensive 5&3 victory over Englishman Chris Wood on day one of the Volvo World Match Play Championship at the magnificent Thracian Cliffs and Beach Resort in Bulgaria.
The 2010 US Open Champion produced the biggest win of the first eight matches in the championship as he looks to continue the victorious form that propelled him to victory on the PGA Tour just two weeks ago.
On a day that also featured victories for Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, Carl Pettersson, Francesco Molinari, Branden Grace and Peter Hanson, the most surprising result saw Thailand’s defeat pre-tournament favourite Ian Poulter 3 and 2.
There was one halved match as American Bo Van Pelt and South African Richard Sterne finished all square in the first round of group stage matches.
The 24 players in the field are split into eight groups of three at the beginning of the tournament, with each player playing two matches and the top two from each group progressing to the knock-out stages.
“To get the win under the belt today is very important as it really kind takes the pressure off going into tomorrow,” said McDowell.
“I played solid today and I really enjoy this golf course. It's very fiery, very linksy and suits my style of play, so I was happy the way I hit the golf ball today and I am starting to get my head around these greens and looking forward to some more good golf tomorrow.”

Volvo World Match Play Championship – Day 1 results:
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño bt Jamie Donaldson 1 hole.
Carl Pettersson bt Thorbjørn Olesen 4 and 3
Francesco Molinari bt Henrik Stenson 2 and 1

AUSSIE GRIFFIN LEADS IN SOUTH KOREA

NEWS RELEASE
JEJU ISLAND, South Korea - Australian Matt Griffin made the most of perfect conditions to shoot an eight-under-par 64 today for a one-shot lead after the first round of OneAsia's US $900,000 SK Telecom Open on South Korea's Jeju Island.
Griffin, a winner in South Korea last year at the tour's Charity High1 Resort Open, had nine birdies and a bogey around the 7,361yd par-72 Pinx Golf Club course -- and it could have been even better if not for two three-putts.
South Korean veteran Kang Wook-soon surprised even himself to take sole possession of second place, while ten others were jostling for position at six under -- including China's Hu Mu, Australians Anthony Brown and Jason Norris, American David Oh and Michael Long of New Zealand.
Playing the course back-to-front, Griffin started with a birdie and then put on a masterclass from the 15th to the second with six in-a-row.
He three-putted the fourth for a routine par and repeated the sin on the seventh for a bogey, but birdies on six and nine put him in charge of the tournament.
"For a while I had visions of Thailand," said Griffin, who finished the last round of the season-opening Thailand Open in April with eight birdies in-a-row for a career-low 64.
"I had a good go at eagle on the last today which would have given me a 63, but it wasn't to be."
The shot of the day belonged to American Jason Kang, who aced the 193yd) par-3 17th with a five-iron to win a Jaguar XF 2.0P luxury four-door sedan worth around $65,000).

SEAN LAWRIE MOVES INTO CONTENTION AT NJCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Sean Lawrie from Portlethen, near Aberdeen -  a student at Midland College, Texas - shot a second-round, three-under-par 69 to move up to a share of fifth place in a field of 124 players at the NJCAA Men's National Championship over The Rawls Course, Lubbock in Texas.

Paul Lawrie's nephew, pictured right, had seven birdies in all - at the fifth, eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th, 13th and 14th - and would just about have leapfrogged into the lead but for a double-bogey 5 at the short 12th.
He also had two bogeys, at the first and sixth,  before he got up a full head of steam to improve on his first round by five strokes over a very long par-72 course, 7,349yd with four holes over 500yd, one of them in excess of 600yd.
Also in the field is Chris Low (McLennan College, Waco, Texas) from Edinburgh. A freshman student, Chris, pictured below, left, has had rounds of 74 and 73 for 147 and is in joint 24th place.

Alex Forristal (Johnson County College) (69-71) and Akzel Olsen (Wallace State College) (70-70) lead by two strokes.
Lawrie's performance is spearheading Midland College's bid for the national team time. They have three players in the top 10 at the moment and lead the team table with a total of 575, three shots ahead of second-placed McLennan in a field of 24 teams.

Meanwhile former North-east boys champion Daniel Thompsett (Rocky Mountain College) from Aboyne moved up from joint 43rd to joint 79th in a field of 154 players at the NAIA men's chamionship at Creekside Golf Club, Salem in Oregon.
Over a par-72 course of 6,887yd, Daniel, pictured left, improved on his first round by five shots with a 73 which included birdies at the eighth and 10th, with bogeys at the seventh, 14th and 18th.
Thompsett is currently 13 shots behind the leader Sondre Ronold (Oklahoma City) (69-69) who leads by one from Adam Loran (California State-San Marcos) (70-69).
Daniel is competing as an individual in the championship. The Rocky Mountain College team did not qualify to play in the event.
