LAW STORMS HOME WITH FOUR BIRDIES TO FINISH JT FOURTH IN MOROCCO
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
David Law came with a storming four-under-par run over his last eight holes to finish joint fourth in the German PGA's Developmental Tour event, the Open Madaef, at El Jadida GC, Morocco, today (Thu).
The Aberdonian, who plays out of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, earned 1,353 Euros and is now second in the Tour's Order of Merit with winnings of 10,148 Euros this year, second only to Germany's Bernd Ritthammer with 15,096 Euros.
Law finished with rounds of 73, 75 and 71 for a three-over-par total of 219 - 10 behind the two-shot winner of the 5,000 Euros first prize, Dutchman Richard Kind (71-69-69).
Law had a triple bogey 6 at a short hole in his first round and a double bogey 7 at a par-5 hole in his second round. And, with bogeys at the second, third and ninth to turn in three-over 39 in his final round, his prospects of a top 10 finish looked remote.
But Law was not twice Scottish amateur champion and once Scottish boys match-play title winner for nothing.
He parred the 10th and then the birdie fireworks started. He got a 4 at the long 11th, a 2 at the short 13th, and 3s at the par-4 14th and 18th to come romping home in four-under-par 32 for a one-under 71.
Law has a liking for Morocco courses, having been a winner in the African country.

AMERICAN KEMMER LEADS SOLAIRE OPEN IN MANILA
NEWS RELEASE
Manila,
April 11: Asian Tour Qualifying School graduate Dodge Kemmer of the
United States kept his emotions in check when he grabbed the first round
lead with a six-under-par 66 at the Solaire Open on Thursday.
Kemmer
returned with a clean scorecard highlighted by six birdies to hold a
two-shot advantage over Thailand’s Pawin Ingkhapradit at the inaugural
US$300,000 Asian Tour event, which is title sponsored by the Solaire
Resort and Casino.
Lin
Wen-tang of Chinese Taipei, a multiple Asian Tour winner and local hope
Mars Pucay, who is searching for a first Asian Tour win, posted
identical 69s to be among 12 players to shoot under-par at the
challenging Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.
Baek
Seuk-hyun of Korea, who is ranked fifth on the Order of Merit,
registered a 70 to share fifth place with Australia’s Matt Jager,
Daisuke Kataoka of Japan and Thai duo Rattanon Wannasrichan and Piya
Swangarunporn.
Kemmer, who regained his Asian Tour card by finishing 21st
at Qualifying School after losing his playing rights last season,
returned to form after reading psychology books to improve his mental
strength.
“I
get down on myself pretty easily. I’m trying to stay more level
emotionally and that’s easy to do when you are playing well. It will be
interesting to see if I can handle my emotions when I hit some adversity
this week,” said the 25-year-old.
He
struggled to ignite a title charge in his rookie season last year but
hopes to turn the tide in his favour on the familiar Wack Wack East
course.
“I
really like this course when I played here last year. It is always
easier to go out and play a good round when you are happy and excited to
play the course. I knew I had it in me and luckily it worked out for
me,” smiled Kemmer.
“I’m
loving the Asian Tour more than I did last year, which was already a
lot! I’m happy to be playing here. In the first year, you get used to
everything. It is totally different from anything in America which I’m
used to but I feel a lot more comfortable out here now,” he added.
Pawin,
who secured a tied fifth result at the SAIL-SBI Open in India in March,
felt comfortable on the Wack Wack greens, which were almost similar to
the greens on his home course at the Army Golf Club in Thailand.
“I
share the same home club as Thaworn (Wiratchant) and the greens are the
same as Wack Wack,” he smiled. “All my birdie putts were from inside 10
feet. There was very little wind in the morning so that was good. I
played here last year but I shot an 84 and 78 in the opening two rounds.
Today I shot a 68 which shows how much I’ve improved as a golfer.”
Pucay,
the best placed Filipino after day one, is determined to put a
disappointing 2012 season behind him as he lost his Asian Tour card for
the first time since 2008.
“It
was very frustrating last year but I have a chance to make amends this
week,” said the 43-year-old. “It is always a good score, anytime you
shoot under-par at Wack Wack. I’ve played here since my amateur days so
let’s hope that I can keep this momentum going.”
Chinese
Taipei star Lin used a new putter to great effect as he sank five
birdies against two bogeys to trail Kemmer by three shots.
“I
putted very badly last year. I averaged about 30 putts a round and you
can’t win tournaments if you putt like that. I hit about 75% of fairways
and greens last season but only my putting let me down,” lamented Lin, a
five-time Asian Tour champion.
UPHILL STRUGGLE AHEAD OF BYRNE
Banchory's James Byrne faces an uphill struggle to beat the halfway cut in the Asian Tour's Solaire Open at the Wack Wack Golf Club, Manila in the Philippines.
He shot an opening, error-strewn five-over-par 77 to be sharing 91st place, some 11 shots behind the leader, American Dodge Kemmer who had a bogey-free six-under 66.
Byrne ran up a triple bogey 7 at the first hole and lurched backwards and forwards between some very good golf and some not so good play.
He birdied the third, fourth and 10th but bogeyed the seventh, short eighth, long 13th, 17th and 18th in halves of 39 (three over) and 38 (two over).
Scores after round 1 of the Solaire Open 2013 being played at the par 72, 7222 Yards Wack Wack GcC course (a- denotes amateur):
66 - Dodge KEMMER (USA).
68 - Pawin INGKHAPRADIT (THA).

NEWS RELEASE FROM ASIAN
DEVELOPMENTAL TOUR
Johor Bahru, Malaysia, April 11: Venezuela’s Wolmer Murillo edged into a one-shot lead over local hope Nicholas Fung at the halfway stage of the PGM-Maybank Johor Masters on Thursday.
The
32-year-old Murillo, playing in his rookie year in Asia, carded a
four-under-par 68 for a two-day total of 10-under-par 134 in the
RM200,000 (approximately US$65,000) Asian Development Tour (ADT) event
at the Johor Country Club.
Fung,
the co-overnight leader with Murillo, battled to a 69 which included
five birdies against two bogeys to stay in the hunt for his first ADT
title after several close shaves.
England’s
Grant Jackson carded a 68 to lie a further shot back in third place
while a group of seven players, including Asian Tour winner Airil
Rizman of Malaysia and Thailand’s Jakraphan Premsirigorn, share fourth
on 139, five shots behind in what is the fourth leg of this season’s
ADT.
Murillo enjoyed a fast start with three opening birdies after starting the day from the 10th
tee but the challenging Johor Country Club bared its fangs as he
dropped three shots while shooting four more birdies on his inward nine.
“You
have to be careful on this golf course. It will be important for me to
keep to the same course management for the next two rounds,” said
Murillo.
“I
have a chance to win as long as I can keep the rhythm going with my
putting and stay patient. It’s my first season in Asia and I love it
here. The ADT is a big opportunity to try to play your way onto the
Asian Tour.”
The
22-year-old Fung, the reigning Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour
number one, remained on course for his first ADT victory, which will
offer the winner six points on the Official World Golf Ranking.
“Overall
it was good although I didn’t hit my irons as close as yesterday,” said
the slightly built Malaysian, who finished runner-up in the previous
ADT stop in Malaysia.
He
was disappointed to three-putt the seventh green for one of two bogeys
in his round but he produced a good comeback birdie at the eighth hole
where he hit it close to the pin from a near impossible position near
the jungle which lines the course.
“It was a good comeback from bogey, got it close from the jungle,” said Fung.
“I’ll
just go out and play in the next two rounds. I’ve had so many
runners-up finishes in the past and I think I’ve learned to just let it
happen,” added the Malaysian, who registered three victories last
season.
Jackson
used an eagle on the second hole to keep in touch with the leaders
while title holder Luke Bleumink of Australia carded a 71 for a 140
total, six shots back.
Brunei’s
Faiz Damit made the cut for the first time as a professional as he
safely made it into the last two rounds after adding a level par 72 to
his opening 71 for a 143 total.
The
top three players on the ADT Order of Merit at the end of the season
will earn Asian Tour cards for 2014 while all events receive Official
World Golf Ranking points from this season onwards.

SWANTSON NEW GC WIN SDGP CHALLENGE TROPHY
NEWS RELEASE
The fifth annual challenge match, played between members of the Swanston Golf Club in Edinburgh and the Scottish Disability Golf Partnership members and coaches, took place on Thursday 4 April.
Playing a stableford competition, the sixteen golfers from each club took part in a team event, with several reserve players playing in the SDGP's Order of Merit Championship. After a few tight matches in recent years, and several annual games going to the 18th hole, Swanston held on to the trophy this year by a slim margin of 4.5 to 3.5.
However, with their traditional and regular warm welcome, everyone always enjoys the 19th hole, with good food and company, banishing those low golfing temperatures.
"We always get a warm clubhouse welcome from the members, several who we have known since the Challenge Cup began. Our thanks must also go to the caterers for an excellent meal after the golf and on such a cold day something which has grown in importance", said Peter Osborne the SDGP's Vice
Chair.
Brian Johnstone, the Club Captain at Swanston reported that the clubs winners on the day were Brian Wherret and Fred Rankin and all the club players returned some exceptionally high scores to win the trophy. He also praised the SDGP's players for their dedication and abilities, proving to others that having a disability should not be a barrier to playing the game.
Some golfers had travelled from London, Lancashire and the Isle of Arran, as well as across the mainland.
The SDGP players, were also competing for the Scottish Order of Merit Championship, which will ultimately select Team Scotland to play against England for the Auld Enemies Cup and their winners on the day were: Jim Gales of Fife, Stevie Cunningham of Clackmananshire, Paul Cunningham of London, Malcolm Gerdes-Hansen of Fife and Trevor Crombie, also of Fife.
Two donation cheques were presented to the SDGP totalling over £250. The first was from the Swanston New Ladies Secretary, on behalf of the Ladies Section, with the proceeds from a raffle held at an "ABBA Evening", where all the participants had dressed up as the singers and had an excellent evenings entertainment at the club. The second was from the Seniors Section at the club, who had donated the proceeds from their regular Seniors Sweep to the SDGP funds. Many thanks were expressed for their kindness and support.
The SDGP moves on to arrange its other April and May games, which include, Morecambe, The Dukes in St Andrews and Liberton, and gets ready to host its 4-day Scotland v England match at Kinross in June and the 5-day World Team Cup in July.

NEWS RELEASE: NEW MID-AM TOURNAMENT AT WEST LANCASHIRE GC
NEW MID AMATEUR GOLF TOURNAMENT ANNOUNCED
“The North West of England
Mid Amateur” to be held at the West Lancashire Golf Club, Liverpool
Mid Amateur Golf
(www.midamgolf.co.uk)
are pleased to announce a new event on their ever expanding schedule for Mid
Amateur golfers in the UK. The North
West of England Mid Amateur will take place at West Lancashire GC, Liverpool on
Friday
24th May 2013.
The tournament
will be held over 36 holes with the winner being the player who returns the
lowest gross score for the 36 holes. There
will be numerous prizes with an expected prize fund of over £1,000. The event will be open to all male golfers over
the age of 35 and who are in possession of an active CONGU handicap of 12 or
less. Entry into this event will also be
on a first come first served basis with NO ballot to allow everyone a chance to
enter the event.
“Following on
from the success of our events in 2012, we decided that it was time to hold an
event in the North West as there is currently a lack of Mid Amateur events in
the area. The feedback was so positive
from the players last year that it cemented our belief that there is a huge gap
in the market for new tournaments aimed at golfers aged over 35 years of age.”
said Jason Morris, Golf Director of Mid Amateur Golf. “The standard of amateur golf is now such,
that unless you hold a handicap of scratch or better you stand little or no
chance of entering some of the more prestigious events around the country and players
are left in a golfing wilderness.”
“Our events allow
players the opportunity of competing against the best Mid-Amateurs in the
country whilst having the opportunity of playing for some great prizes. We are expecting entrants from all over the
United Kingdom and if successful we will hold the event annually.”
West Lancashire
GC is located near Liverpool, England and is regularly used as an Open
Qualifying course and is also featured in the Golf World Top 100 golf course
survey every year.
“These are exciting
time for us and the web site www.midamgolf.co.uk is attracting visitors from all over the
world. There are over 18 events this
year and also a season long Order of Merit with prizes.” Added Jason.
Anyone who would
like to register their interest to play in this event is asked to visit www.midamgolf.co.uk and email their details to the Tournament
Secretary.

Warren Bennett is one of seven golfers
who share the lead at the end of the first round of PGA EuroPro Tour
Qualifying School Final Stage at Frilford Heath Golf Club.
Bennett (Prince’s GC), who won the
Scottish PGA Championship in 1999, quit playing in 2009 after a string
of injuries. He played six events on the 2011 PGA EuroPro Tour and

ST ANDREWS INTERNATIONAL GOLF CLUB UPDATE
“A FIRST FOR ST ANDREWS”
This
week, SOL Golf commenced the construction of the course at Feddinch, part of a
£40m development being created for St Andrews International Golf Club, (SAIGC) which
will be the first, and only, private golf club, at St. Andrews, limiting play to members
and their guests.
Located at Feddinch, a
244 acre estate on the Southern boundary of St. Andrews, the facilities will comprise an 18 hole golf course with a
bye hole and practice range, all
designed by former ‘Open’ champion, Tom Weiskopf, and a luxurious Clubhouse.
Along with CNN, who are to film the club’s development, Tom
Weiskopf is due to visit soon to cast his eye over progress and to ensure the
course meets his exacting standards.
The traditionally designed
clubhouse will afford the highest standards in luxury and comfort and will
combine the best elements of a private golf club with the amenities of a
leading resort. It will incorporate a feature lounge and restaurant, private
wine cellar, separate attended locker rooms, a "spikes" bar, business
centre, video conference facility, spa, full service professional shop and 38
luxurious suites.
The suites, ranging in size from
40 sqm to 100 sqm will be individually designed to provide comfort, elegance
and style, and all will enjoy panoramic views.
With a focus on exclusivity and
member service, the facility will fulfil the prime objectives of providing a
private club of the highest quality for the benefit of its members and their
guests and of establishing SAIGC as an internationally renowned, member only,
residential golf club at St. Andrews, the ‘Home of Golf.’
Quality will be the hallmark of
all facilities, service and cuisine - from the limousine uplift at the point of
arrival in Scotland, to bell staff for arrival and departure assistance, to a
dedicated butler service and a concierge service to make all member
arrangements.Close attention to detail will be reflected throughout, providing
the highest level of care and attention, with security and privacy being of
paramount importance.
SAIGC
will be owned by its members and will be, first and foremost, an exceptional
and world class private golf club. SAIGC will operate as a not-for-profit
organisation, managed solely for the benefit of its Members.
Membership
may be acquired only by invitation and numbers will be limited to ensure ideal
conditions for members and their guests, both on the course and in the
clubhouse.
