GOOD START BY WESTWOOD BUT McILROY IS OVER PAR

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE

HUMBLE, Texas -- The putter D.A. Points once took from his mother paid off nicely for him on Thursday afternoon at the Shell Houston Open.
Points opened with five straight birdies and wound up with an 8-under 64 on a pleasant morning with only moderate wind at Redstone Golf Club. He had a one-shot lead over Cameron Tringale and John Rollins.
A mild wind gained strength in the afternoon, and Rollins still managed a 65.

"I knew the conditions were going to be tough out there, knew the greens were fast, so that makes it tough as well," Rollins said. "I just kept the ball in front of me and gave myself a lot of opportunities and got a solid round out of it."

Angel Cabrera of Argentina, a two-time major champion who lives in Houston, was in the group at 66.

Phil Mickelson was at 4 under and right in the mix until he hit his tee shot into the water on the sixth hole and made double bogey, nearly hooked a 3-wood into the hazard on the next hole and three-putted for bogey, and then made bogey on the par-3 ninth from a bunker to wind up at 72.

"It was a disappointing finish," Mickelson said. "I feel really good with the putter, and I believe that as the tournament goes on, I'll get better." Mickelson played with defending champion Hunter Mahan, who didn't hit the ball his best and it finally caught up with him at the end for a 74.

Also in the group was Geoff Ogilvy, who needs to finish in the top 50 in the world to get into the Masters. Ogilvy is currently at No. 50, though he will lose spots through the formula this week. He had three penalty shots in his round of 73.
Lee Westwood hit two shots in the water and still salvaged a bogey and was in the large group at 68 that included Northern Trust Open winner John Merrick and Jimmy Walker.

Charles Howell III had a 69 in his bid to get into his hometown major at Augusta National. Howell would need to finish at least in fourth place alone to have any chance of moving into the top 50.

For Points, Tringale and so many others, they need a win to get into the Masters.

Points was just trying to see some reasonable results, having made only two cuts all year. He did manage to join a group of stars in the Tavistock Cup earlier this week and, upon leaving home Tuesday, he grabbed a handful of putters. One of them once belonged to his mother.

Ping rep Matt Rollins had some weights added to the putter, and equally important was an impromptu lesson from Lamar golf coach Brian White. "It's one of those things," Points said. "I holed some nice par putts yesterday in my pro-am. I didn't hit it great, but I made a few good putts and the ball was going in the hole with nice pace and rolling real tight. And I thought, `All right, this might be the key that kind of gets me going.'"
That it did.

For McIlroy, it was another slow start. He has yet to break par in his five opening rounds this year -- that includes the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship -- and found himself behind early. He was in a fairway bunker on the eighth hole, opened the face of 9-iron to advance the ball as far as he could, and caught the lip. With some 250 yards for his third shot, a 5-wood leaked into the water and he walked off with a double bogey.

But he never got down on himself.

"I think I learned from that over the last few weeks. I've got to keep my spirits up," McIlroy said. "I felt like I was doing that a bit too much at the Match Play and The Honda, and obviously we saw what happened there."

Frustrations boiled over at The Honda Classic halfway through the second round when McIlroy walked off the course. He vowed not to do that again.

Still ahead of him, though, is making it a long week in Houston. He starts Friday's second round outside the cut line.

Mickelson, meanwhile, was going along nicely despite some errant tee shots, such as his one on the 12th hole. He sliced the tee shot so far left that it bounced off the cart path, across the 13th tee box and down a slope toward the bushes. He was about pin-high, only 100 yards left of the green. He hit wedge into about 15 feet and turned to the gallery and said, "It's all about angles."

The angles caught up with him. Mickelson tee shot on the sixth never cleared the water, leading to his sloppy finish.

Mickelson enjoys playing the Shell Houston Open before the Masters, but this is a different year. Because of the way the calendar falls, the Masters is a week later, and Houston is now two weeks before the first major of the year.

This is only the second time in the last 15 years that Mickelson won't be playing the week immediately before Augusta.
Lefty also plans to skip the week before the U.S. Open.

"It's a very unusual situation for me here," he said. "I usually like to play the (week) before. I'm going to have to learn how to do that, now that we're not really having tournaments conducive to getting ready for those events. This is a good opportunity for me to work on getting prepared properly in another spot outside of a tournament."

SCOTS BOYS LOSE TITLE DECIDER TO IRELAND

Ireland overpowered Scotland 8-4 in the last-day title decider in the Under-16 boys' quadrangular international at Southerndown Golf Club, South Wales.
The Irish took the morning foursomes 3-1 and built on that platform when they halved the top singles and won the next two.
Cameron Black (Cardross) and Ross Robertson (Old Ranfurly) turned the tide for a spell by winning their singles 5 and 4 respectively and Jack Thoms (Irvine) got a halved match.
Then the Irish tail wagged to win the last two singles for a 5-3 capture of the afternoon honours.

Most successful performers for the Scots over the three days were:
Cameron Black (Cardross) 5pt (five wins, one defeat); Ross Robertson (Old Ranfurly) 4pt (three wins, two halved, two defeats); Murray Naysmith (Marriott Dalmahoy) 3 1/2pt (three wins, one halved, two defeats); Matthew McCulloch (Portpatrick) 3 1/2pt (three wins, one halved, two defeats).

SIEM LEADS BY THREE AT AGADIR, MOROCCO

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Marcel Siem did his chances of earning a Masters Tournament debut next month the world of good with an excellent first round at the Trophée Hassan II in Morocco today.

The 32 year old German, currently 72nd in the Official World Golf Ranking and needing to climb into the top 50 on Sunday night to earn an invite to Augusta National, carded an eight under par 64 at Golf du Palais Royal, Agadir on Morocco's western Atlantic coastline.
He led by three shots from Spain's Alvaro Vewlasco.
Taking advantage of easier afternoon conditions - only four players had broken par on a blustery morning - the Open de France winner bogeyed the second but then holed his approach to the next for eagle and reeled off four further birdies to be five under after 15 holes.
That saw him tied for the lead with Spain’s Alvaro Velasco, the former Challenge Tour winner carding five birdies in his first 11 holes.
The morning’s clubhouse pace had been set by English trio David Horsey, Graeme Storm and Simon Wakefield; all of whom defied strong winds to sign for four under par 68s.
“It was one of those days when you go out there on a realty tough golf course and the wind is blowing 20-30 miles per hour and you really don't expect to finish on four under,” said Wakefield, who is still chasing a maiden European Tour victory after almost 300 events.
“I am shocked to be tied in the lead but I played well.”
Storm, like Siem a former Open de France winner, has not had a top-three finish since 2009.
“Hopefully I can start climbing the order of merit now and have a good year because I feel like all the changes I have made have given me a new lease of life,” he said.
Horsey won here in 2011 and shot six birdies and two bogeys in Agadir.
The two-time European Tour winner was only one under through 11 holes but finished strongly; striking his approach to four feet at the third, holing a 60 foot birdie putt at the fifth and chipping in from the bunker at the front of the seventh green.
“It was very good,” he said. “I am very happy with the start. I had my fair share of good luck today but you need that in this game and you just have to take advantage of it when it comes your way.
“I managed to play well today and had the ball under control for the majority of the round.
“Obviously I had the win here two years ago and I do feed off a lot of those good feelings from that when I come back here. It is a great golf course that is different to what we usually play with a lot of run-offs and raised greens but you can make a score if you play well as I showed today.”

SVOBODA CZECHS OUT AFTER 46 SHOTS OVER SIX HOLES

FROM THE GOLF CHANNEL
Now here is a walk-off that grabs your attention.
Jakub Svoboda, a 20-year-old pro from the Czech Republic, was 21 over par for the first six holes of the Hassan II Trophy before he withdrew, citing a wrist injury, which is a strange byproduct of public humiliation.
That’s a 46 for six holes. By comparison, the first-round leader in Morocco, Marcel Siem, shot 8-under 64 (for all 18 holes).
If you’re wondering, the highest score ever recorded on the European Tour was 111, by Mark James at the 1978 Italian Open.
But give Svoboda this: At least he was consistent. He began his round 7-7-9-7-7-9 at the 6,844-yard, par-72 Golf du Palais Royal in Agadir, which has not and never will be mistaken for an Open Championship venue.
Sadly, it appears this isn’t the first time that Svoboda has carded a mammoth number in competition, either.
Last year he shot 88-79 at the Norwegian Challenge, 83-85 at the English Challenge and 91-84 at the Credit Suisse Challenge. In 2011, he made his European Tour debut at the Czech Open and carded 80-75, perhaps hinting at some untapped potential.
Instead, Svoboda is the 1,522nd-ranked player in the world, which may in fact be too generous.

DEESIDE'S DEBBIE IS BEST OF BRITISH

PRESS RELEASE FROM DEESIDE GOLF CLUB
Thursday, March 28, 2013

Deeside Golf Club manager Debbie Pern has been named the Golf Club Managers' Association's Manager of the Year 2012/13.

Debbie Pern is only the second woman  to have won the competition and was presented with her award at a ceremony held in Walton Heath Golf Club, Surrey on Wednesday (March 27th).

Arguably Debbie's greatest achievement was being heavily involved in the £1.8m building of a new clubhouse, immediately after being appointed manager.

Furthermore, she led the conversion of an unused flat in the clubhouse into a thriving 30-seat conference centre that attracts several external functions per month, and has expanded the club's catering operation around during her tenure.

Debbie stated that she was thrilled to win the award but stressed that it is a team effort and a fantastic accolade for Deeside and all the team.

She said: "I'm delighted to have won, but the achievements recognised were not done on my own. There's a team at Deeside and they've all played their part in contributing to this success."

Club captain Neil Harper added: "The club is absolutely delighted to hear of Debbie's achievement. She is a key part of our senior management team and central to much that is great about Deeside Golf Club and its smooth running.

"Members appreciate her capabilities, dedication and cheerful disposition and, with some of them having nominated her, coming out first from a long list of excellent candidates shows Debbie impressed the judges with her style and input to Deeside."

ENDS

Deeside Golf Club is in the village of Bieldside (where Paul Lawrie lives) on the western suburbs of Aberdeen. The River Dee flows along the bottom reaches of the courses (18-hole and a nine-hole).
Paul Lawrie is an honorary member and his two sons, Craig and Michael, are members.

Debbie Pern hails from Fochabers, Morayshire
