STREELMAN WINS TAMPA BAY CHAMPIONSHIP BY TWO FROM BOO WEEKLEY

PALM HARBOR, Florida -- Kevin Streelman finally won on the US PGA Tour with a game that looked as if he had done this many times before.

Streelman didn't make a bogey over the final 37 holes on the tough Copperhead course at Innisbrook. He didn't miss a shot over the last 11 holes Sunday on his way to a 4-under 67 for 14-under-par 274. That gave him a two-shot win over Boo Weekley, who posted the clubhouse target of 276 with a brilliant last round of 63 in the Tampa Bay Championship presented by EverBank.

Streelman won in his 153rd start on the US Tour. The win gives him 500 FedExCup points and puts him into the Masters for the second time in his career.

Weekley closed with a tournament-best 63 some three hours before Streelman finished.
Defending champion Luke Donald finished a creditable joint fourth with a 69 for 278. But for a cluster of late bogeys in an earlier round he would have gone very close to figuring in a play-off.  

Jordan Spieth, the 19-year-old from Texas, tied for seventh and earned special temporary membership on the US PGA Tour.

Boo Weekley had planned to get an early jump on the drive to Orlando after Sunday’s final round at the Tampa Bay Championship, hoping to throw a line into some of the ponds at Bay Hill.
Instead, he faced a three-hour wait around Innisbrook – courtesy of the 8-under-par 63 that put him in line for a potential playoff.
“It’s all right,” Weekley said with a shrug. “I’ll wait.”
The homespun Floridian relaxed with some pizza after posting his lowest round since the 2010 Greenbrier Classic. That was before injuries ganged up to spoil not only his golf swing, but his bow hunting.
But this weekend has shown glimpses of the Weekley that won back-to-back at Hilton Head and helped the 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup team to victory. He played his final 30 holes without a bogey, pouring in eight birdies on Sunday.
Each of his final two birdies, at Nos. 15 and 16, came after crisp irons that stopped less than 2 feet from the flagstick.
“It was impressive. Even I’m still kind of shocked at how well I really hit it,” Weekley said. “It was one of the best ball-striking days I’ve had in a long time. I had three or four tap-ins today.”
Sunday’s performance also came at a course that has bedeviled Weekley for years. Even though Innisbrook has the same type of tree-lined fairways as courses he grew up on in the Florida Panhandle, he’d missed the cut in four of his past five appearances.
His best finish on the Copperhead was his first, a tie for 22nd back in 2002.
“I think I was more happy when I made the cut here (Friday), to tell you the truth,” Weekley said. “It’s been such a long time. This course has given me fits. Now that I’d made the cut and could actually get myself up in contention, it felt good.”
After extra work with coach Scott Hamilton this week to get a better read on the Copperhead’s hard undulations, Weekley started seeing a pay-off.
“We started adding a little more break (on the putts) to what I’m normally seeing,” he said. “Then when I started seeing a little more break, I started seeing the putts fall.
“When you haven’t been out there in so long, you get nervous. It feels great now – it’s over with.” The wait, though, was only beginning.

PALM HARBOR, Florida -- The uphill climb to the 18th green at Innisbrook was nothing compared with the journey that brought Kevin Streelman his first US PGA Tour

His biggest claim on TOUR was winning a $1 million bonus from the Kodak Challenge in 2009. His last win was five years ago in the club championship at Whisper Rock.
Streelman won the Tampa Bay Championship presented by EverBank on Sunday in his 153rd start on the PGA TOUR and moved to No. 6 in the latest FedExCup standings.
The way he played this weekend on the tough Copperhead course -- particularly the back nine -- made it look as if he had done this many times before.
"Always had a dream of getting here," Streelman said. "And so to get this is the culmination of a lot of hard work and a lot of time spent late into the evening, and getting up early in the morning. And it's really a dream come true."
Streelman took the lead for good with a 5-iron into 6 feet on the par-3 13th, the toughest at Innisbrook on the final day, for a birdie.
"Probably the best shot of my life in that situation," Streelman said. "It's just how I envisioned it and I pulled it off."
He played with so much peace and precision that his target on the daunting tee shot at the 16th hole was a group of four trees. He aimed between the second and third tree. And he met his final challenge with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th hole, leading to a 4-under 67.
Streelman didn't make a bogey over the last 37 holes. He didn't miss a shot the last 11 holes.
"Hopefully, we can do it again," Streelman said. "This is a lot of fun."
Boo Weekley, who teed off three hours before the leaders, had a tournament-best 63 and waited to see if that would be enough. He kept up hopes until Streelman made birdie on the 17th, and then ripped another tee shot down the middle on the 18th.
The victory sends Streelman, who finished at 10-under 274, to the Masters next month for the second time in his career.
Cameron Tringale had a 66 and finished alone in third when Leonard, who earlier made bogey from the bunker on the 16th, three-putted the final hole for a 71. Leonard wound up in a tie for fourth with defending champion Luke Donald (69) and Greg Chalmers (70).
The other big winner was Jordan Spieth, the 19-year-old from Texas who holed a 50-foot chip for birdie on the 17th hole and made a 7-foot par putt on the final hole for a 70 to tie for seventh.

That gave him enough money to earn special temporary membership on the PGA TOUR for the rest of the year, meaning he can take unlimited sponsor exemptions.
Until making that chip, Spieth was projected to be $195 short of the temporary membership, which is based on earning the equivalent of 150th on the money list last year.
"That would have been brutal," he said with a grin. "But it's nice to get the crowd excited on 17. That was one of the coolest shots I've ever hit. That was as loud as it gets. Hair on the back of your neck stands up. But yeah, if I was $200, short, I would have just asked if I could pay them $200."
He now has earned $521,893 in three starts, the bulk of that coming from a runner-up finish in the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com last week.
The 34-year-old Streelman had the 14th consecutive win by an American in official PGA TOUR events, dating to Tommy Gainey at Sea Island last fall. Americans have won the first 12 events of the season, their best streak since winning 13 in a row in 1989.
All that mattered to Streelman was finally getting a win.
"Just keep chasing your dreams," Streelman said. "You never know what will happen."
Sixteen players were within three shots of the lead when the final round began, and anything could have happened. No one imagined a 63 at Innisbrook, and Weekley's round was so strong that it was 8.6 shots better than the field average.
"That will go down as one of the best rounds of the year," Pat Perez said in the parking lot, pleased with his own 67 and stunned someone could have a 63.

Weekley began his round by missing a 4-foot birdie putt, and he closed with such brilliance that he ran off three straight birdies on the back nine from inside 2 feet.
"It was impressive," Weekley said. "Even I'm still kind of shocked at how good I really hit it. The greens that I missed, I thought were going to be perfect. Overall, one of the best days I've had in ball striking in a long time."
Considering what was on the line, Streelman's performance might have been better, even if his score was only a 67. He had to play in the final group, knowing that he hasn't had a chance this good to finally win.
"That was really cool," Streelman said. "I just stayed really patient, and I had a peace about me today."
Leonard tied him for the lead on the 12th, where Streelman missed a short birdie. Every shot after that was right where Streelman was aiming, including the key shot on the 16th hole, when he hit driver with a baby cut that worked its way around the lake.
The birdie on the 17th kept some stress out of the final hole, and Streelman played that the way he had the other holes on the back nine.
"It definitely has not sunk in yet," Streelman said. "It's a total dream come true. Ten years ago, I was in a car driving to mini tours and the Hooters Tour and Gateway Tour and U.S. Pro Tour. And I've been very blessed, but I've worked very hard to get here, too. The game is getting harder and younger, and these kids are fearless out here. I've worked diligently, and I think smarter as of late, and fortunately it paid off." 

WHY DON'T TOUR PROS LET PLAYERS THROUGH, OR SHOUT FORE?

Bifurcation is the big word on everyone’s lips these days. I’m not sure why. A bifurcation of one part of the rulebook already seems to exist. 
An example of that was obvious in the closing stages of the Avantha Masters in Delhi. Once again we saw that professional golf doesn’t always conform to the simple laws of etiquette most ordinary club golfers obey. 
South Africa’s Thomas Aiken triumphed in India to win his second European Tour title. However, he waited longer to record that victory than he should have done. 
Playing in the last group along with China’s Wenchong Liang and Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand, Aiken faced an interminable wait on the 18th tee while Scott Hend in the group ahead consulted a rules official after hitting his tee shot into a pond. 
The Aiken trio spent nearly 15 minutes waiting back on the tee while Hend discussed where to take a drop along with playing companion David Drysdale and the official. 
Of course, any club handicapper knows the correct procedure in this situation. It’s obvious from the rulebook – simply let the group behind play through. 
Page 19 of my rulebook makes it pretty clear that faster players always have priority. 
“It is a group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group.” 
Most club golfers adhere to this simple tenet in the etiquette section of the rulebook. Tour professionals seem to ignore it on a regular basis. It’s amazing how often a rules situation crops up that delays play and the group behind isn’t called through. 
Given the influence tournament professionals have on amateurs, it’s no wonder some ordinary golfers refuse to let groups behind play through. Why should they let groups play through when it doesn’t happen on the professional tours? 
Of course, the above dynamic does nothing to speed the game up. Just the opposite. When this basic law of etiquette isn’t adhered to, it’s no wonder pace of play becomes snail-like. 
It’s not just the refusal to let fast players play through that differentiates the professional game from amateur golf. There’s also the basic courtesy of shouting “fore!” It doesn’t seem to happen too often in the professional game. 
How many times have you seen a tournament professional hit a wayward shot and then hold out an arm rather than shout "Fore!"? Spectators can’t hear a raised arm. 
If you or I were to hit a wayward tee shot towards another group and didn’t call fore, we’d soon hear about it. 
Golf has been played in India for a long time. However, previously it was a game only for the elite. It’s only in recent years that professional tournaments have been held in the world’s second-most populated country. 
The European Tour first visited India in 2008, while the Professional Golf Tour of India began two years earlier. As a result of these endeavours, the game is being opened up to a huge market. Professionals have to set the best example possible for ordinary golfers. 
The least they can do is stand aside to speed up play, and shout "Fore!" when they hit a poor shot. It isn’t too much to ask for. Is it?

WALLACE BOOTH FINISHES JT 8th ON NGA TOUR

Wallace Booth earned $5,716 for a joint eighth place finish today (Sunday) in the NGA Tour's Kandy Waters Memorial Classic at Mount Vintage Plantation Golf Club, North Augusta in South Carolina. The Comrie man had rounds 73, 71, 75 and 70 for a one-over-par total of 289, five shots more than the winner of the $35,000 first prize, Canadian Riley Wheeldon who scored 74, 70, 70 and 70 for four-under 284.Paul Cormack from Banchory missed the cut by one shot with rounds of 73-75 for 148.The total starting field numbered 134 players.

Greater Noida, India: Thomas Aiken continued South Africa’s dominance of The 2013 European Tour season when he collected his second title at the Avantha Masters.

Aiken became the sixth South African winner in 12 events so far this season as he held off a charge from home hero Gaganjeet Bhullar to collect the €300,000 winner’s cheque.

The 2011 Open de España champion went into the final day at Jaypee Greens Golf and Spa Resort, in Greater Noida, with a three-shot lead thanks to a ball-striking masterclass on Saturday, when he signed for a round of 62.

Scotland's David Drysdale is still seeking his first European Tour win. Having played himself into contention with three sub-70 scores, the man from the Borders could not produce another one when he needed it most. He finished with a 71 for joint sixth place on 273.
Drysdale had only three variations from par on his final scorecard - a bogey at the first, a 2 at the short seventh and a 4 at the long 15th. 

Jaypee Greens ambassador Bhullar, who birdied three of his last five holes, and China’s Liang Wen-chong, who notched a hole in one at the seventh, both launched worthy challenges. But Aiken held them off and signed off in style, holing a birdie putt from 20 feet on the final green for a five under par round of 67 and a 23 under par aggregate total.

Aiken, who dedicated his win to his wife Kate, said: “Some of the other guys played fantastic golf today. Liang really had it going on the front nine, then Gaganjeet played some unbelievable golf on the back nine. They didn’t give me any breathing space, so hats off to both of them. I had to keep concentrating right up until the second last shot, then when I found the green I could finally relax and enjoy the moment. It was the perfect end to a great week.

“Since Kate and I have arrived, the people have been great. They’re just so happy, always smiling and quick to tell a joke. We’ve met some really great people and haven’t got a bad word to say about the place. I’d love to come back and see the Taj Mahal and the other sights and sounds of this wonderful country some time.”

Bhullar took second place on 20 under par, and the Challenge Tour champion could console himself with a cheque for €200,000 which will go a long way towards securing him a full season on The European Tour for the first time next year.

He said: “I played aggressively, because I needed to make a good charge to stand a chance. I made only one mistake, on the eighth, where I missed the fairways. But that happens.

“I gave it a good shot, but Thomas was simply superb all day. And then he holed a fine birdie to finish in style, so credit to him.”

Wen-chong finished in third place on 18 under par after closing with a round of 69.

CAMERON WINS NORTH ALLIANCE BY FOUR AT MUIR OF ORD

Allan Cameron (Fortrose & Rosemarkie won Saturday's penultimate North Scottish Golfers' Alliance fixture at Muir of Ord with a two under par round of 66 narrowly failing to secure an aggregate prize. Variations against par were rare - his only bogey at the 4th, countered by birdies at the 3rd, 6th and 15th. He won by four strokes from early starter Neil Mcwilliam (Elgin) who encountered more frosty conditions still managing 70.

LOCAL HERO PRAYAD WINS THAILAND OPEN

NEWS RELEASE   BANGKOK:  Prayad Marksaeng ended a near decade-long drought by home players and became only the third Thai to win their national championship with a two-stroke victory in OneAsia's U.S. $1 million Thailand Open at Thana City Golf and Sports Club today. Prayad had rounds of 68, 67, 65 and 64 for a 24 under-par total of 264, to claim the winner's purse of $180,000 and the coveted King's Trophy, donated by the country's revered monarch.  "This means so much to me," an emotional Prayad said moments after signing his scorecard. "Yes I cried a bit … I am happy the King's Trophy will stay in Thailand."  Urged on by his fellow professionals, Prayad took a celebratory jump into the lake adjoining the 18th green after the prize presentation. "I have waited so long for this. It is something that I have dreamed about, but I have tried so many times and failed. This time it was my turn. I am so happy," he said. Australian Scott Strange (67) pushed Prayad all the way, but a bogey on the last left him two strokes adrift. Countryman Nick Cullen (65) was a shot further behind while six players shared fourth place -- including defending champion Chris Wood (70).  Overnight leader Lucas Lee of Brazil struggled to get his round together and had to settle for a share of 12th after carding a 73, while three-time major winner Padraig Harrington (66) couldn't recover from a disastrous third-round 75 and finished at 14 under. Despite producing a generation of some of Asia's finest golfers, only two Thais have won the national open -- Suthep Meesawat (1991) and Boonchu Ruangkit (1992, 2004).   Two shots off the pace overnight and starting in the second last group of the day, Prayad, 47, had an early inkling the planets were correctly aligned with a birdie-birdie-birdie start -- although a bogey on the easy par-five fifth briefly halted his progression. Four birdies in-a-row straddling the turn put him back in the driver's seat, and an audacious chip-in birdie from the fringe on the 16th meant the chasing pack had it all to do.  Strange, winner of OneAsia's Order of Merit in 2009 on the back of victory at the Volvo China Open, went bogey-free until the last, while Cullen was pleased with his effort for a top-three finish. "I gave myself every chance, but it just wasn't to be. Look, I'm not too unhappy," said Strange. "I'll get over the disappointment but I feel my game has come together and  just a putt here or there and it could have been completely different." "I had a few problems with my back earlier in the week but today felt great," said Cullen, a hot favourite now for the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship in two weeks time at Emeralda Golf Club, where he won the Indonesia Open title a year ago.  The Thailand Open and Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship are both co-sanctioned by OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation, meaning this victory is Prayad's fourth Japan Tour success. He has also won six times on the Asian Tour and came into the tournament as one of the form players after winning the Singha Esan Open on the ASEAN PGA Tour in February. FROST STILL ONE AHEAD OF COUPLES IN CALIFORNIA

NEWPORT BEACH, California (AP) -- David Frost maintained a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples in the Champions Tour's Toshiba Classic, eagling the final hole Saturday for a 5-under 66.

After opening with a 63, Frost had a 13-under 129 total. The South African made an 18-foot putt for the eagle on the par-5 18th, while Couples two-putted from 35 feet for birdie and a 66 of his own.
"It was a day where Freddy and I battled it out," Frost said. "We were on top of the leaderboard all day and he made a nice birdie on 10 and I followed it with one and we did the same thing on 13. I think we played steady golf."
Jim Gallagher Jr. was third at 8 under after a 68, and Scott Hoch (64), Jay Haas (66), Bob Tway (67) and D.A. Weibring (68) were another stroke back at Newport Beach Country Club. Hoch is making his second start after returning from left hand and wrist injuries.
"You never know, someone could go out and shoot 63 early in the day that can always happen," Frost said. "I just will have to play my normal game and 68 will be a good score. I'd take that right now."
Couples spent more time on the range before the round to stay loose, but battled his driver most of the day. He hit only six of 14 fairways, but was more frustrated with his short irons.
"I let a couple of easy 8-iron shots go," Couples said. "I bogeyed the fourth hole and the sixth hole from 145 yards, which really kind of killed me, but I made it up with a few good putts. ... He's one ahead and I'm not going to be able to shoot a 68 or 69 and win. I have to shoot something very, very good."
Couples, the event winner in 2010, had 26 putts after needing 28 the first day.
"For some reason a lot of people struggle on these greens and I do struggle at times, but very rarely with the speed of the greens," Couples said. "That certainly helped me today with 30-40 footers getting them up there close."
