Lee Westwood, two shots off the lead going into the final round of the Honda Classic, killed his victory prospects stone dead after birdieing the long third.
He dropped shots at the short fifth, the sixth, the 11th and short 15th.
Top British finisher is going to be US Tour rookie, Englishman David Lynn.  He totalled three-under-par 277 with scores of 72, 68, 68 and 69.
Sharing the lead in the clubhouse with Lynn is Lucas Glover who signed off with a 70 for 277.
Michael Thompson is set to win but he has to negotiate the last three holes without a major collapse to do so.
With three to play, Thompson is nine-under-par and leading Geoff Ogilvy (Australia) by three shots.

Dawie Van der Walt held off stiff competition from compatriot Darren Fichardt at Copperleaf Golf and Country Estate to claim a maiden European Tour title at the Tshwane Open in South Africa

Now based in America, the 30 year old South African looked comfortable throughout Sunday’s final round as he carded a five under par 67 to finish 21 under par and edge out recent Africa Open champion Fichardt by two strokes in Centurion.

It had been the winner of a fortnight ago that got off to the fastest start with three birdies in his first five holes, but when Van der Walt followed up eagle on the fourth with birdies at six and seven he edged past Fichardt by a single stroke.

He would drop his only shot of the week at the tenth to fall back into a brief tie, but further birdies at 12 and 16 proved enough to establish a two shot cushion that he would not relinquish.

“You can only imagine what it’s like to win such a big one,” said Van Der Walt. “I’m just really happy that I played well and won, because you can play well and not win.

“You start doubting yourself and at 30 years old you start to wonder if you’re good enough, and this shows me that I am. I would have liked to win before 30, but I’ll definitely take this. Golf is a game where you don’t get a lot of chances to win, and to do so is fantastic.”

As for the other two men who had shared the 54 hole lead, Charl Coetzee carded a level par 72 to tie for fifth, while Chile’s Mark Tullo struggled to a five over par 77 and a share of 27^th place.

Meanwhile South Africa’s Louis De Jager finished third at 18 under after a closing 69, a score matched by American Peter Uihlein who finished one shot worse off in fourth.

DAVID LAW'S GOOD START IN MOROCCO

David Law already has a victory in Morocco on his CV. He could be on the trail of another after a good start to the German PGA Developmental Tour's Al Maaden Open at Marrakesh today. The Aberdonian, pictured, playing out of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, shot a first-round, six-under-par 66 to be in joint third place, two shots behind the leader, Daniel Wunsche (Germany).  Law, twice winner of the Scottish men's amateur championship and also a past Scottish boys' champion, had a bogey-free round studded with birdies at the second, long fourth, long seventh, 10th, 11th and long 16th in halves of 33. Stablemates Jordan Findlay from Fraserburgh and Peterhead's Philip McLean did not fare so well. Findlay shot a five-over 77 with double bogey 6s at the second and 18th in halves of 38-39. He is lying in joint 101st position.  McLean ran up not one but two triple bogeys in a seven-over 79 which leaves him languishing in joint 111th position in a field of 120. US PGA TOUR LEFT OUT ON ITS OWN AFTER EUROPEAN TOUR MONDAY ANNOUNCEMENT

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida -- On Monday, the European Tour is expected to announce that it will support the R&A and the USGA in their proposed ban on anchored putting. The South African tour has already taken that position.
Last week, a small group of LPGA players and officials talked to USGA executives and posed questions about the proposed ban. From what LPGA commissioner Mike Whan has said, there's no reason to believe the LPGA will do anything except support whatever position the USGA and the R&A take. All of which puts the PGA Tour in an odd-man-out position.
Which, it says here, is exactly where Tim Finchem wants it.
On Sunday of the Accenture Match Play Championship, the wily US PGA Tour commissioner, both in a press conference and on the NBC broadcast, made an effective case for why his tour was asking the USGA to withdraw its support of the proposed ban. 
He didn't cite the numbers, but he talked about the polling he did with the 15-member Players Advisory Council and the nine-member Tour Policy Board. By a combined margin of 22-2, the two groups asked Finchem to ask the USGA to back off. 
Finchem, a skilled politician and a corporate survivor if ever there was one, did exactly what he was asked to do.
But he's in a tricky spot. Because he also has to respond to other mainstage constituents who are strongly opposed to anchored putting. They include, most notably, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods, and other power brokers in the game who are in his universe.
For instance, Augusta National chairman Billy Payne, who does not anchor-putt and who represents a club that has long, historical ties to the USGA and would never question the organization's authority over the game.
There's a lot of guesswork in this sentence, but I think the USGA and the R&A are going to be able to institute the proposed rule change, beginning in 2016, just as they have been planning to do. 
Finchem, and this whole thing of course is not about Finchem, will have successfully covered himself with both groups and will be able to say to his players who are opposed to the ban:
"We tried, but we can't institute our own rule and go against the rest of the world." 
The anchoring crowd might talk about hiring high-priced legal talent to take on the USGA. Shades of the old 1980s grooves suit against Ping.
But it's hard to imagine how any court is going to say that the USGA, along with the R&A, does not have the right to make the rules by which golf is played. After all, we're talking about a game! 
There are no right-to-work issues here. Casey Martin had right-to-work issues. He needed a cart to play professional golf. Guys who anchor-putt can find another way to get the ball in the hole. 
Casey Martin needed a way up a hill. By the way, did Tim Finchem have Martin's back as he had the backs of the limited number of Tour players who anchor-putt? Absolutely not.
Then there's Tim Clark, the likable South African who putts with a long wand. His testimony at a January players' meeting at Torrey Pines, at which he described a muscle abnormality that prevents him from putting the conventional way, did a great deal to engender sympathy among the lodge brothers to fight the ban. 
If the new rule becomes formally approved sometime in the next few months, he will learn to adapt. It won't be that hard. He will make the exact same stroke he makes now with the exact same putter except now his upper hand will be an inch or two away from his chest.
All this will happen because the US PGA Tour will not be comfortable being the only professional tour to enact a rule of competition by which anchored putting is allowed. 
The US PGA Tour cannot be a party to bedlam. Bedlam is not in its DNA. Neither is thumbing its nose at the ultimate authority figure of U.S. golf.
Had the European Tour questioned the wisdom of the proposed change, this whole conversation could be different. But it didn't, or it won't once it makes its announcement on Monday. The US PGA Tour knows it cannot stand by itself.
And what does it mean for you at home, if the USGA and the R&A get their way? Casual golfers will continue to use the method, and why shouldn't they? 
The PGA of America will grudgingly accept the ban. The bosses there might encourage individual clubs to create local rules, if they are so inclined, to allow anchored putting, but I don't think there will be much of that. 
People will see that the rule is well-reasoned. Nobody is taking away long putters - just the method by which they are used.
What the US PGA will really watch closely is whether a successful USGA feels empowered to try to reduce the distance a ball flies. Nobody would stand for that, right? We'll see.
In the meantime, the LPGA players asked a series of insightful questions about the proposed ban. They saw Matt Kuchar win that Sunday at the Accenture, the same day on which Finchem made his comments on national TV. They were interested to know why Kuchar's method, in which he runs the shaft up his left forearm, is not considered anchored putting. Mike Davis, the USGA executive director, gave the answer: because his hands are swinging freely. They are unencumbered.
What the USGA is trying to protect here is the idea that a golf club should be moved by a free-swinging action. That is an essential element of the game. It has been for centuries. Yes, anchored putting has been around for decades. Yes, this move should have come a long time ago. 
But the Far Hillers' attitude is better now than never, and I think their argument, that a club should not be pressed against your body, is going to carry the day.

HENDRY WINS PLAY-OFF TO RETAIN NZ PGA TITLE

New Zealander Michael Hendry has gone back-to-back at the NZ PGA Championship, winning the title for the second year in a row after a play-off against Australian Scott Strange.
The crowd erupted at The Hills golf course as Hendry birdied the first playoff hole to seal the victory with a tournament total 19-under 269.
“I’ve actually won every play-off I’ve ever been in, which is obviously a god record - not that I thought about that prior to going out,” said Hendry
“I felt pretty comfortable on the tee - I just said you’ve done the hard work now just finish it off.”
“To get across the line and for it to be at home and with the retention of the trophy, it’s just magic.”
Opening his round with three consecutive birdies Hendry spent the day tussling with Strange and compatriot Gareth Paddison for the lead.
“I was aware of what was happening all day but there was a few times when I was a bit surprised.”
“Coming through nine I thought I was probably a couple up and then I was walking up on the 10th tee and saw that Gareth had come from nowhere.”
“Obviously I was watching it the whole way coming in through the last four of five as well knowing how tight it was.”
He becomes the first person since Frank Nobilo to successful defend the title. Nobilo achieved the feat in 1985 and 1987 after the tournament wasn’t played in 1986.
“You come into the week thinking this is my trophy, I’m not going to give it to anyone else. I had that attitude all week so to retain it is unbelievable.”
“If people are going to put my name with the likes of Frank Nobilo and Sir Bob Charles, it’s fantastic.”
“One of my goals is to be regarded as one of New Zealand’s best when I hang up my boots and hopefully I’m on the way to doing it.”
He will now head to the WGC Cadillac Championship in winning form and is ready to test his skill against the world’s best.
“Hopefully I can continue my good form and have a good week and finish right up there,” added Hendry.
“There's no reason why I can't go over there and compete. It's just a matter of maintaining the equilibrium and not trying to get carried away with who I'm playing with and the other people around.”
Strange fired a 6-under 66 to charge up the leaderboard and work his way into the playoff against Hendry.
“The week has been good - I came in on an invite so I wasn’t even in the tournament two weeks ago, I have been playing nice and something clicked this week. I started holing a few putts and all of a sudden I was in contention,” said Strange.
“It’s like anything, you don’t like losing. Hats off to Mike, he did the right thing on the last, he put it on the green and he gave himself a chance.”
Finishing in a tie for third at 15-under 273 were Kiwi pair Gareth Paddison and Josh Geary.
Rounding out the top-5 on 14-under 274 were Rohan Blizard (NSW), Li Haotong (CHN) and Michael Tran (VIE)
In the pro-am component of the NZPGA Championship Perth based New Zealand Professional Michael Long and his amateur partner Chris Hunter took out the title on 18-under the card. Long earns a bonus NZ$10,000 for his efforts.
Aberdeen-born Michael Sim finished T33 on 283 with a final round of 70.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida  -- Michael Thompson felt like he was playing in a U.S. Open whenever he saw his golf ball in the rough or the scores on the leaderboard at The Honda Classic.

In cool, blustery conditions on a course with water hazards at nearly every turn, the strategy was to keep the head down and keep big numbers off the scorecard. Thompson and US PGA Tour rookie Luke Guthrie managed to do that well enough to share the lead going into the final round.
Guthrie was tested his first time in the last group on TOUR and made a collection of solid pars on his final eight holes for a 1-over 71. Thompson accepted his bogeys and finished with a two-putt birdie on the 18th for a 70.
They were at 8-under 202, and while the conditions were tough, equally daunting were some of the names behind him.
Lee Westwood, who moved his family down the road from PGA National over the Christmas break, rallied over the last five holes.
The Englishman chipped in for birdie, made an 18-foot birdie putt on the 17th and salvaged par after hitting into the water on the par-5 18th. That gave him a 70 and put him only two shots behind.
He was tied with Geoff Ogilvy, who appears to have snapped out of his putting doldrums that cost him dearly on the West Coast. Ogilvy recovered from three bogeys in four holes at the start of his round by making a 7-foot birdie putt at the end for a 70.
By one shot, Ogilvy missed staying in the top 50 at the end of last year for an automatic invitation to the Masters. He has slipped to No. 79, but a win Sunday would take care of that, and runner-up alone at least should get him into the top 50 and earn a spot at in the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship next week.
The Australian summed up the day perfectly.
"Even par for the day was never going to go backward," Ogilvy said. "It was only going to go forward, and I did that."
Eleven players were separated by four shots going into the final round, a group that included Charles Howell III, Keegan Bradley, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler, who surged into the picture with a birdie-eagle finish for a 69. He was the only player among the last 46 players to tee off who broke par.None of the top 20 players going into Saturday did better than 70.
"The rough is definitely, exactly like a U.S. Open," Thompson said. "You just have to take your medicine and make your bogey, just try to eliminate the doubles out here and just try to play smart golf and know that you're going to make a couple birdies."
Missing from the mix was Tiger Woods.
Woods had hoped to post a low score to at least get into contention and was headed that way with a 32 on the front nine. But he didn't make another birdie the rest of the way, and took a double bogey on the par-3 17th when his shot plugged into the bank short of the green and he never found the ball. He wound up with a 70, not a bad score under the conditions, but not good enough to achieve what he wanted. He was eight shots behind.
Woods was nine shots out of the lead a year ago after 54 holes, closed with a 62 and was runner-up by two shots to Rory McIlroy.
Instead of the No. 1 player at the top of the leaderboard, there is a pair of players who have never won on the PGA TOUR, two players who realized that a victory Sunday would get them into the Masters. Thompson hasn't been to Augusta National since 2008 as a U.S. Amateur finalist.
It might help that the expectations will hang on those behind them.
"You definitely see the names," Guthrie said. "I would like to see them all up there, and hopefully, right behind me. You want to compete, you want to play against the best and lay it all on the line tomorrow on the back nine. Hopefully, they're all there and we're battling."
If the wind is anything like it was Saturday, it could be a matter of hanging on -- and not just for them.
Proof of that was the scoring. Y.E. Yang had a 67, the low score of the third round, and moved up 36 spots into a tie for seventh.
Westwood made a pair of sloppy bogeys to end the front nine and was in danger of falling too far behind until a 33 on the back nine got him back in the game. Just as key was getting through the 10th and 11th holes with par.
The par-4 11th, with the second shot over a lake, played so difficult that it yielded only birdie among 75 players -- a 35-foot putt by Yang -- and played to an average score of 4.800, which was higher than both the par 5s at PGA National.
The 10th played just over 500 yards as a par 4 and into the wind, so tough that Ogilvy had to hit 3-wood for his second shot.
"I like my chances regardless of the conditions," Westwood said. 
 "I'm playing nicely. Just got a couple of mistakes I made today, but other than that, I'm playing solidly. I have to start making a few putts. I had a lot of chances to make putts that just grazed the hole. I like being out late on a Sunday and having a chance."
Five of the nine players within four shots of the lead could get to the Masters with a win, and that would be particularly meaningful to Howell, who grew up in Augusta. He was five shots out of the lead, until making a 20-foot birdie on the 15th and coming close to the water on the 18th, stopping short of a bunker for an up-and-down birdie that gave him a 71.
Fowler had a 69 and finished nearly two hours before the leaders. When the round was over, his name was prominently on the leaderboard. He will play in the final round with Howell in the third-to-last group.
"The biggest thing is being within a few shots going into the back nine tomorrow," Fowler said. "That's where the tournament really starts."
DIVOTS: Billy Horschel was three shots out of the lead with a birdie on the third hole. He made six bogeys and three double bogeys the rest of the way for an 81. ... David Lynn of England, a PGA TOUR member based on his runner-up finish at the PGA Championship last year, shot 68 while paired with Woods and was six shots behind.

FOTHERINGHAM AND DINGWALL TIE AT TORVEAN

Bryan Fotheringham  (Inverness) and Scott Dingwall (Grantown) tied for the top spot with one-over-par 67s in Saturday's North Scottish Golfers' Alliance fixture, played over the Torvean course, Inverness for the first time. 

 Dingwall had a roller-coaster round which included an eagle 3 at the third after a triple bogey 7 at the second. He also birdied the fourth, 10th, 14th and 15th and bogeyed the sixth, eighth, ninth and 12th in halves of 35 (three over par) and 32 (two under).

Fotheringham was the steadier of the two with four birdies (third, eighth, 10th and 13th) offset by five bogeys (first, seventh, ninth, 15th and 16th) in halves of 33 and 34.
