SNOW HALTS FIRST-DAY PLAY IN WORLD MATCH-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Heavy snow in the Arizona desert meant less than four hours' play was possible on the opening day of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
Not one of the 64 players is through to the second round yet and ten games, including those of top seeds Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and 2011 winner Luke Donald, have yet to start.
Despite freezing temperatures Sergio Garcia was able to get the tournament off on time at 7.25am, but he was on the 16th green two up against Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee when the action was called off.
Garcia was possibly one putt from victory, but like everybody else was just happy to retreat to the warmth of the clubhouse.
It had been not only cold, but windy and then wet before the rain turned to sleet and eventually to snow.
Also going well were Ian Poulter, champion three years ago, and Lee Westwood. Justin Rose held a two hole lead over K J Choi at the turn - but the fifth seed had been four up.
Ryder Cup hero Poulter led Scotland's Stephen Gallacher - winner of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on his last start three weeks ago - by three after 12, while Westwood stood two up on Garcia's fellow Spaniard Rafael Cabrera Bello after five.
Dane Thorbjørn Olesen was getting the better of his battle of the debutants with Welshman Jamie Donaldson, who had to take a penalty drop after his opening drive and bogeyed five of the first seven holes to be three down to the player he pushed into second place in Abu Dhabi last month.
England's Chris Wood, who won his first European Tour title a week later in Qatar, was level with Masters Tournament champion Bubba Watson after six, while Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington - one of two all-Irish clashes with McIlroy waiting to play Shane Lowry - had only just teed off when they were called in.
The snow should have cleared by Thursday morning local time, but there is the possibility of frost that could further delay things.
The tournament does have the ability to make up a lot of lost time, however, with the likeliest scenario now being that the third round and quarter-finals will both be staged on Saturday.
Gallacher three-putted the short sixth and then conceded the eighth and tenth before Poulter salvaged an unlikely half on the par five 11th after his carved second shot was perilously close to going out of bounds.
Rose kicked off with a birdie putt of nearly 55 feet and Choi bogeyed three of the next four, but birdie putts at the sixth and ninth halved the deficit.
Westwood produced arguably the shot of the day, drilling an iron through the wind to five feet at the short third, and Cabrera Bello three-putted the next to lose further ground.
Wood needed only a bogey six at the second to draw first blood, but Watson's pars on the third and fifth were good enough to take him ahead, only for the American left-hander to drop another stroke at the next.
The biggest lead was held by Australian Jason Day, who was six up on American Ryder Cup player Zach Johnson after ten, while holder Hunter Mahan turned four up on young Italian Matteo Manassero.
McIlroy said on Twitter: "This weather is officially ridiculous", while Poulter joked: "What's the problem? Let's play.
"The caddies have officially just had a snowball fight. Never seen anything like it."
He then posted a picture of "at least two inches of snow" on his courtesy car.
McDowell stated: "Holy coldness - I've only ever played in an event with conditions like this once."
The event in question was the West of Ireland Championship in "about 1998".

BUCHAN MEN McLEAN, FINDLAY FAIL TO SHINE IN MOROCCO

Buchan's Philip McLean and Jordan Findlay were well down the field at the end of the first round of the Mogador Open at Essaouira, Morocco today (Wednesday). McLean, from Peterhead, had a three-over-par 75 to be joint 55th while Findlay, from Fraserburgh was joint 103rd in the field of 112 after an 82.Germany's Christopher Mivis, with an eight-under 64,  leads by four from Darren Wright (England). KEVIN DUNCAN DECLARED NE ALLIANCE WINNER AFTER JOHN DUFF DISQUALIFIED

Spearheaded by local member John Duff, amateurs filled the top three places in today's North-east Golfers Alliance fixture over Newmachar Golf Club's Swailend course.
Duff, who has a +1 rating, headed the field of 75 to win a £100 voucher with a gross, one-under-par 71, very good scoring over a sodden course. He varied from par on only three occasions - birdies at the second and 14th and a solitary bogey at the very last hole in halves of 35 and 36.
LATE NEWS: John later disqualified himself for having signed for a lesser figure at one hole than he actually took. The mistake meant he had scored 72 not 71.
McDonald Ellon's +2 player, Kevin Duncan, who had appeared to finish one shot behind Duff on 72 was then declared the winner and awarded the £100 first prize voucher.
Duncan had adventurous round which saw him run up a quadruple bogey 7 at the short fifth but compensate with birdiess at the third, ninth, 11th, 14th and 18th in halves of 39 and three-under 33.
Chris Lamb (Newmachar), after clubmate Duff's disqualification, moved up to second place behind Duncan with a 73. He will be looking back ruefully on a bogey-bogey finish.
Joel Hopwood (Royal Aberdeen), just back from a week in Tunisia, was the leading professional in joint third place on 74 with four-handicap Newburgh amateur Jim Duncan.

BLINDED BALL-SPOTTER SUES GAVIN DEAR FOR £50,000

Murrayshall House Hotel, near Perth's tour professional Gavin Dear, a former Walker Cup player, is being sued by a golf tournament ball-spotter for £50,000 damages after he was struck and blinded in one eye by a shot from the Scone-based golfer.
The incident happened in the 2009 Scottish Champion of Champions' Tournament, organised by the Leven Golfers' Society over the Leven links in Fife.
David McMahon, 70, of Leven has raised the action at the Court of Session in Edinburgh. Dear turned professional later in 2009.
Mr McMahon said he approach a couple of spectators who had strayed off a path and asked them to move as they were in danger of being struck by a golf ball.
As Mr McMahon turned to return to his buggy he was hit in the eye by a ball struck by Mr Dear at the sixth hole.
"The ball hit me and I went down," he said in court. "I covered my eye with my glove. I took my glove away and it was full of blood."
He told his counsel, Rnald Clancy QC, that he did not hear anyone shout a warning. The retired bus driver said it was the ninth time he had been struck on a golf course.
Mr McMahon denied that he was behind the buggy and emerged into the path of the ball when questioned by Graham Primrose, QC for the golfer.
It is alleged that Mr Dear knew or ought to have known that Mr McMahon was in line with the path of his shot and that had the golfer exercised reasonable care, ball-spotter Mr McMahon would not have been injured.
Mr Dear, 28, maintains that nobody was visible to him or  his playing partner when he played his second shot from light rough at the par-5 hole.
He claims that he did see a buggy but there was no sign of any person.
Mr Dear's defence is that he acted at all times with reasonable care.
The hearing, before Lord Jones, continues.

MUDA, RENOLDS SHARE LEAD IN MALAYSIA

Kedah, Malaysia: Malaysia’s Shaifubari Muda and Lindsay Renolds of Canada set the early pace by posting matching seven-under-par 65s to take the first round lead at the PGM Sime Darby Harvard Masters today.

James Bowen of the United States carded a 66 to take third place while compatriot Spencer Shishido was a further shot back in fourth place after signing for a 67 at the RM200,000 (approximately US$65,000) Asian Development Tour (ADT) event.

Chinese Tapei’s Hsieh Chi-hsien set himself well for his second ADT win when he returned with a 68 to stay three shots back of the leaders in tied-fifth place alongside Australia’s Anthony Choat, England’s Grant Jackson, Thailand’s Pavit Tangkamolprasert, Philippines’ Carl Santos-Ocampo and local hopes Akhmal Tarmizee and Khor Kheng Hwai at the Harvard Golf and Country Club.

Shaifubari was clearly delighted with his flawless round which was highlighted by seven birdies on holes three, six, nine, 10, 12, 13 and 18.

While he has set his sights on winning his first ADT title this week, Shaifubari is also hoping that he can eventually ply his trade on the main Tour.

“65 is good score. Although I’ve shot a 64 on this course before, I’ll take a 65 anytime. Everyone thinks of winning whenever we’re in contention and I’m no different. But the most important is still to remain focus as it’s still early days,” said Shaifubari.

“The Asian Tour is where I want to play eventually and hopefully my performances throughout the season can get me there,” added the Malaysian.

The top three players at the end of the ADT season will earn their Asian Tour cards for 2014.

Renolds credited his driver for playing a pivotal role in securing pole position after day one.

The Canadian reached the turn in 31 after marking his card with five birdies on holes three, four, six, eight and nine.

He then added further birdies on holes 13 and 18 to sign for a sparkling round of 65.

“I birdied all the par-fives today, which I’m obviously very delighted with. The course conditions were excellent. My driver was perfect and I played every shot as it was. Hopefully, this will continue through to Saturday,” said the 26-year-old Canadian.

Shishido, meanwhile is in buoyant mood as he welcomes the opportunity of earning world ranking points and taking his career to the next level at this week’s PGM Sime Darby Harvard Masters.

“World ranking points for ADT events are really an added incentive as that’s something that all professionals like myself work hard for. We always want to move up the rankings and ADT events offer us the opportunity to do so,” said Shishido.

Australia’s Mark Varela had the honours of carding the event’s first hole-in-one after he sank his ace on the 159-metres par-three second with a seven-iron.

The PGM Sime Darby Harvard Masters is the second event on the ADT to receive world ranking points in the new 2013 season.

Starting in 2013, all events on the burgeoning ADT, which is the secondary circuit of the Asian Tour will receive Official World Golf Ranking points.

These points will be used to determine the field when golf makes a return to the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro in 2016.

All winners on the ADT will receive a minimum of six world ranking points while the top-six players and ties will earn points based on a sliding scale.
