McDOWELL, LAIRD, HARRINGTON MISS CUT IN CALIFORNIA

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
LOS ANGELES -- A move down the California coast hasn't changed a thing for Fredrik Jacobson.
One week after his best finish in more than a year, Jacobson birdied the two toughest holes at Riviera Country Club on his way to a 6-under 65 on Friday and a share of the lead with Sang-Moon Bae going into the weekend at the Northern Trust Open.
The Swede did just about everything well, from his tee shots to his iron play, just what it takes to get around the classic design of Riviera.
And it helps to get a little luck, such as a 55-foot birdie putt from just off the green at No. 9 that bumped along until disappearing for an unlikely birdie.
"That was probably the biggest bonus of the day," Jacobson said.

Bae played in the morning and began with four straight birdies, all of them from tap-in range until holing a 25-foot putt on the 13th. He wound up making birdies on half of his holes in his round of 65.

They were at 9-under 133, one shot clear of John Merrick (66) and John Rollins (65).

Still very much in the picture was Luke Donald, who chipped in twice for birdie and worked his short-game magic around the course for a 66.
Playing for the first time in two months, Donald didn't look as if he had much rust. He was two shots behind.

Lee Westwood birdied the last hole for a 68 to join the group at 6-under 136 that includes a pair of major champions, Charl Schwartzel (67) and Webb Simpson (66).

Phil Mickelson was lurking, despite a sloppy double bogey on the 10th hole. Mickelson still managed a 67 and was five shots back.

"I had a little hiccup on the 10th," Mickelson said. "I was just trying to make 4 and I couldn't even do that. But 4 under is not a bad round, with the exception of No. 10. That took a great round and turned it into a pretty good round."

It sets up for a wide-open weekend along Sunset Boulevard.

Twenty players were separated by five shots. That included defending champion Bill Haas (67) and Matt Kuchar, who had a pair of double bogeys in a 73. They were four shots behind.

Sergio Garcia bogeyed three of his last five holes for a 73 and was in the group at 4-under 138 that included Mickelson, Ernie Els and Adam Scott. Jacobson has chronic back issues, and he has them under control at the moment.
Since his lone win at the Travelers Championship in the summer of 2011, he has only two top 10s in official PGA TOUR events -- a tie for eighth in Hartford as the defending champion, and his tie for seventh last week at Pebble Beach.
"I obviously take a lot out of that, just being in contention again," he said. "I've had some good practice sessions before, but to bring it on the course and play under pressure, that's what it's about. And the sooner I can get back and put myself in this position where I can get some pressure, that's the best practice you can get."
The shocker was that everyone finished the second round, a rarity at Riviera with a 144-man field. Robert Streb had to make par on his last hole for 70 players to make the cut. Instead, he missed a 5-foot putt and took double bogey. That not only allowed 10 players into the weekend at 2-over 144, but Streb wasn't one of them. His double bogey dropped him to 3 over.
Ryo Ishikawa, who made bogey on the 18th from the middle of the fairway, wound up making his first cut of the year.
Donald, the No. 3 player in the world, was one of three players from the top 20 who had yet to play a tournament this year, and they all played in the same group. Scott is still in the mix, while Graeme McDowell had a 72 and missed the cut by one shot.
Donald doesn't have the well-rounded game that took him to No. 1 in the world as recently as six months ago. His short game has carried him, a product of how much work he spent during his break from tournament golf over the last two months.
He holed a tough chip for eagle on the 10th hole Thursday, knocked in a chip just short of the 15th green Friday, and chipped in from about 70 feet short of the green on the par-3 fourth hole for his last birdie of the day.
"Tee to green, I'm getting closer," he said. "I'm very excited being sharp with my short game. It's nice to be in the mix this early. It's never easy to come off a long break and get straight back into the thick of things. A lot of my score comes from a good short game."
Donald began his rise to No. 1 in the world two years ago by working with Dave Alred, a performance guru from Britain who is famous for working with rugby players such as Johnny Wilkinson. The latest influence is none other than Michael Jordan, though Donald says it's nothing more than spending time with the NBA great.
Donald spends half the year in South Florida, where Jordan is building a home.
Jordan loves to play golf. Donald loves to take his money.
"I usually give him six (shots) a side," Donald said. "And that's usually not enough for him."
Donald won an NCAA title at Northwestern and he first met Jordan in Chicago. He says they are simply friends -- "In no way am I working with Michael at all" -- although it doesn't hurt to be around someone with such a winning pedigree.
"It's great just to be around someone that was arguably the greatest of all time in his sport, just to see how he reacts, his demeanour, see his attitude toward things," Donald said. "It's been nice just to spend a little bit of time with him.
"I try to pick up things from just watching him," he said. "I ask him some questions and he gives me answers sometimes. Certainly, it's not like a working relationship. It's just nice to have access to someone that was that great at his sport."
Donald still doesn't understand how he has played the 10th hole so well this week. That hasn't been the case for others.
Dustin Johnson started Friday morning on the 10th hole and went over the green, and then his next shot plugged slightly in the back bunker. His third shot popped onto the green, just barely, and rolled back into his big footprint in the sand. It took him two more shots to get out, and he was happy to leave with a double bogey. Another short-game error late in his round led to a double bogey, and Johnson had a 69, to miss the cut by one shot.

SHORT PUTTS
• Fredrik Jacobson is making his sixth start in the Northern Trust Open. His best finish here is T13 in 2012.

DA SILVA HAS CLEAR LEAD AT HALFWAY IN AFRICA OPEN

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Brazil’s Adilson Da Silva takes a healthy three-stroke advantage into the weekend of the Africa Open after a brilliant second-day display at East London Golf Club, South Africa.
He is in the pole position of  14-under-par 130 after rounds of 62 and 68 spread over two days.
South African Jaco Van Zyl, the first-day leader, is in second place on 133 after scores of 66-67.
England's John Parry is holding down third palce on 134 (68-66)/
The 41-year-old D Silva, a regular on the co-sanctioning Sunshine Tour, had birdied five of his first six holes on Thursday, but after a lengthy delay caused by strong winds was only able to par the next two before play was halted for the day.

One behind clubhouse leader Jaco Van Zyl overnight, Da Silva birdied the ninth on his return, then chipped in for eagle at the long 15th and finished with back-to-back birdies - the latter also coming from off the green - for a sensational ten under par 62 and four-shot lead.

The round was the best of his professional career, but Da Silva proved it was no fluke as he followed it with a second round 68 after a quick turnaround.

He birdied the short tenth - his second - then bogeyed the 11th, but picked up further shots at the 13th and 15th - the latter after chipping to three feet.

A 15 foot birdie putt at the long first and another gain at the seventh for a 68 gave him a 14 under par halfway total and commanding six shot clubhouse lead which came down to three shots when Van Zyl completed a second-round 67 for 133.

Afterwards Da Silva admitted that he may have been on the right side of the draw as Thursday’s morning starters had to face the strongest gusts, which eventually started to move balls on the greens.
“I got a good break yesterday,” he said. “It was extremely hard out there for the morning field, and then I got the break and I just started making some putts.

“I somehow just felt the pace, and my caddie and I are reading the greens very well.

“My putting has been letting me down lately, and it just came alive. I must have had 23, 24 putts, which must make it my best round in putting. I was averaging 32 putts a round in Asia last year.”

Van Zyl was among the last players out in the second round, and having been usurped as leader lost further ground with a bogey at the first.

SCOTSWATCH
Only two of thr Scottish entries - David Drysdale and Chris Doak - survived the halfway cut at 144 and better.
Drysdale and Doak are both on 141, both scoring 74-67 to share 23rd place.
Drysdale birdied six of his first 10 holes in his second round and parred the last eighth straight.
Doak had an eagle 3 at the long 15th and five birdies.
Craig Lee missed the cut by two with rounds of 76-70.
Callum Macaulay missed out on 147 (75-72) and Scott Hendry was even further away from making the cut. He shot 79-72 for 151.

MURRAY, RUSSELL, LAW STILL IN CONTENTION AT KENYA OPEN

CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT FROM NEIL AHERN
European Tour Press Officer

George Murray is chasing his second

European Challenge Tour title at the

Barclays Kenya Open after the

Anstruther man, pictured,  carded a

bogey-free, four-under-par second

round of 67 to finish the day one shot

off the lead set by Tim Sluiter of The

Netherlands.
After missing some good birdie

chances early on at Karen Country

Club, outside Nairobi, Murray

picked up his first shot at the eighth hole before he holed a six foot putt for another birdie at the 12th.

Despite feeling unwell after that birdie, the 29 year old Fifer almost chipped in for eagle at the 15th before tapping in for another birdie and he finished with another birdie at the par five 18th to move to
seven under for the tournament, as he chases a first title since his
home win at the Scottish Hydro Challenge in 2010.
"I played nicely today,” he said. “I scored well on the first day despite not playing too well but today I didn’t struggle to make par once. I hit the ball pretty solid and made a lot of fairways and only missed one green so it was nice.

“The course suits my eye, especially when it gets bouncy because I

grew up on bouncy courses so I won’t complain if it gets any harder,

that’s for sure. You just have to manage your ball well around here.

I’ll just stick to my game plan for the weekend and hopefully it will

go well for me.”

Raymond Russell is a shot further back in fourth place on six

under after he signed for a two under par second round of 69,

while David Law also carded a 69 and the Aberdonian sits just

three shots off  the pace on five under par for the tournament.

Sluiter, meanwhile, roared into the lead as a course-record six under

par second round of 65 moved him a shot clear of the pack.

The 23 year old from the Netherlands was in imperious form at the

sun-kissed venue outside Nairobi as he carded six birdies and an

eagle  to take to the top on eight under par, one stroke ahead of Spain’s Jordi

Garcia Pinto and George Murray in tied second place.
Having begun the day three shots off the lead, Sluiter got off to the
perfect start as he converted a three foot birdie putt at the tenth, his
first, before holing another putt of similar length at the 12th to move
 to two under.
Another birdie at the 17th was followed by an eagle at the par five
18th, chipping in from just behind the green to reach the turn in five
under.
While his back nine was less spectacular, carding bogeys at the third
and sixth holes, birdies at the front nine’s two par threes - the fifth
and seventh - cancelled those blemishes out before another gained
shot at the ninth took him to the summit heading into the weekend’s
play.
“Obviously I’m delighted because it’s a tough course so to
shoot six under is really good,” said Sluiter, who was twice
successful in gaining a European Tour card via Qualifying
School - in 2010 and 2011.
“I enjoy the course a lot and that helps me. Every shot off the tee is
with a different club and you have to think your way around so I like
that.
“I finished fifth in India so it’s been a really good start to the year. I
didn’t get much practice done last week because of snow at home so
I’m happy I didn’t lose my game at all.
“I really like the weather here and I’m staying with four other Dutch
guys so it’s been really relaxed this week.”
Having come agonisingly close to his maiden Challenge Tour victory
at the Open de Lyon last year, Sluiter is hoping that a first title is on
its way in Kenya.
“I’m very determined,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be this week but
if I keep playing the way I have so far it might happen.”
Pinto almost equalled Sluiter’s remarkable round but he was
nevertheless happy with his five under par 66 and the Spaniard
revealed he had been given a little inside information on the Karen
course ahead of this week.
“My coach Joan Anglada played here about 25 years ago
when he was a European Tour player and he said the course
was perfect for me,” said Pinto, who turned 23 on the opening
day of the tournament.
“It’s tricky but I like it. I played really well today from the very start.
After the early birdies at the second and third I was very relaxed and
just enjoyed the day.
“I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, whereas yesterday I missed
a lot of greens, so it was important to get those early birdies.”

Scottish youths champion Ewan Scott from St Andrews finished joint fifth in the South African men's amateur golf stroke-play golf championship at Oubaai Golf Club today. The 17-year-old Fifer endured a frustrating final day when the birdie putts just would not drop for him. He had started the round only three shots behind the leader but could only par his first 16 holes. Then he birdied the short 17th before finishing with yet another par for a 71 and a final total of eight-under-par 280.Last month, Ewan Scott won a golf medal with Team GB in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival.
South African Hadyn Porteous retained the South African stroke-play title with scores of 69, 67, 70 and 69 for a 13-under-par total of 275. He won by two shots from compatriot Wayne Ferreira (66-69-73-69).Ellon's Adam Dunton birdied the last three holes for a closing 71 and a share of 29th place on 290.
Fraser McKenna (Balmore), the only other Scot to survive the halfway cut, finished joint 55th on 298 with scdores of 78, 67, 79 and 74.
